Postcards from Penang
Greetings fello funsters!
Here is a new open discussion thread as “Rostrum” was getting a bit long at over 300 comments (And it’s playing havoc loading on my mobile device).
A quick update from me.
Today, me and my better half drove past Batu Ferringhi (the tourist trap) of Penang and ended up at Penang National Park.
From there it was a one and a half hour trek thru the jungle (fortunately with cleared path) until we reached this pristine beach that only locals really know about. Then we had a nice swim in the warm water and visited the turtle sanctuary.
From there we hitched a lift back on a long boat for the price of ten malaysian dollars ( three Aussie).
I’m currently making a “rebito” – white rum with ice, calamansi lime juice, freshly pummeled mint, a dash of sugar syrup, bitters and club soda.
It’s an arduous life to say the least…
🙂
Here is a new post just for youse..
No really it is….!! 🙂
”Then we had a nice swim in the warm water and visited the turtle sanctuary.”
Was there surf?
Did you eat the turtles?
If the answer to both is “no”, then why bother???
No to both Tom.
I’ve had turtle soup once before, and felt awful afterwards thinking about those poor little paddly feet.
Naturally I’ve never “surfed” . (whatever that is…)
Well, apparently there isn’t much surf in Malaysia, so you can cross that off the to do list!
Just eat lots of turtles.
Did you know that everyone thinks Gillard will be gone this week??!! Well, James does. Personally I’d give her until Wednesday week.
But apparently, it’s mainly the fault of the media, because they made Gillard-
• Have a relationship with a crook
• Get confused about whether she was supposed to act in the interests of her client or her boyfriend
• Misunderstand that she was supposed to get the approval of the union, to set up funds to hold some cash, rather than put the cash into her boyfriend’s personal account
• Think “young & naive” happens to people getting into middle age.
• Decide she should quit practicing as a lawyer
Going to Penang in October for a couple of weeks. Staying at the PARKROYAL Penang Resort. What ‘experiences’ should I not miss?
Also, have about 8 extra days uncommitted. Perhaps one of the islands? Langkawi?
Advice appreciated.
Back bench is quiet, doesn’t look good for joolya.

urrrgh, white rum
I got so badly drunk on bacardi when i was around 18 yo that i have never been able to stomach even the thought of it since.
gag, retch

Because of a 17 yo beat up? What’s it gonna be next week? The opposition just moves from one failed character assassination and stitch-up to another, what’s next in the grab bag of dirt?
Why don’t they forget about the muckraking and just do their jobs. This minority government thing totally unhinges some people doesn’t it?
It’s a wonder the “australians for honest politics trust fund” hasn’t been resurrected to get rid of the greens [oh, actually it has, on a grand scale, through liberal party donations] seeing they are so threatening to the entire world order – we’ll all be rooned heeheehawhawhaha!
I recommend a cheap but serene boatride to the 3rd island on the left.
The turtle casserole is outstanding! And, did you know that they actually bait the turtles into the turtle enclosure with chunks of well-bred horseflesh! Usually the horses of Australian Olympians who failed to bring home gold medals in equestrian events.

bacardia $2 flagon of port when i was around1814 yo that i have never been able to stomach even the thought of it since. Then I fell on the tent & couldn’t walk properly. 😯* true story
Then I fell on the tent & couldn’t walk properly.
* true story
hahahaha
My dad used to have a $2 flagon of tawny port kept hidden in the garage for when my uncle visited, they used to spend a lot of time working on ‘projects’ in the garage. The only person who didn’t know about the flagon was mum. After that, it just became dad’s habit to have a slurp whenever he could. Mum got quite used to having a nightly tipple or two of wine in their golden years though and insists on it now. Strange how things change, at least dad got a few good simpatico years!
OMG scary, some CEO on lateline just said the resources boom will come to an end sometime!
😯 😥 👿
Glad your enjoying Penang, Reb.
Do they do elephant trekking in Penang?

$#!t! And all I get is ten fkn days in cold, wet, windy Taswegia! (According to all the weather reports and webcams I can lay my hands on …
You can see the difference between a WCP of a Blogmasta’s life and self funded retiree reporter! 🙄
Seriously, sreb, sounds really noice …
… we are discussing a trip to south east asia in 2014 (at this stage Mekong River Cruise) … say hello to V for me … 🙂
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Have you noticed that ToM now “contaminates” every thread with his political mud slinging and Liberal HQ driven vendettas … and then, egg, follows with boring opinions on CO2 …
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Taking, The Minister, to see, The Bourne Legacy, in Gold Class at lunch time … expect my review … unless I’m tired after the lunch and wine … tuff life here too … 😉
“Have you noticed that ToM now “contaminates” every thread with his political mud slinging and Liberal HQ driven vendettas … and then, egg, follows with boring opinions on CO2 …”
It doesn’t have to be this way. There are other places, dare I Whisper it, where fumigating the pests improves the quality of the discussion. Here, sadly, the vermin seem to do all the baiting.
‘…self funded retiree reporter!’
😉
That’s interesting MiniPglo.
I see the quality of discussion there is at an all time bland.
How the mighty have fallen, with the most testing alternative view being Scaper! Ho-hum
.
Some just like intellectually lazy comfort, censorship, and absolutely no, NO, NOOO humour. That’s nice for you.
You would say that, ToM. But some prefer are more rational and fact based discussion to the hysterics which abound when the roost is ruled by the cackling loons of Babel.
“Rational and fact based”!!??
Is that what you call Scaper and one or 2 other chosen opponents?
The rest are all a chorus of sycophants, cutting and pasting every article that endorses the government, then vehemently criticising the very same journalist as biased when they write an article critical of the government.
Hilarious. But they get away with it because they-
• Don’t like to point out each other’s stupidity
• They ban anyone who is able and willing to provide reasonable challenge
• They like nice, easy, bland agreement and challenge by Scaper and his ilk.
I can hear the rattling associated with all their nodding agreement.
‘Scaper and one or 2 other chosen opponents?’
And they don’t carry troll cards.
German instability…power grid problems.

Haha, TB’s being courted by the CWA.
I’m going to Tasmania for 10 days in October, TB. I hope the weather’s a bit better then.
Off to the matinee, TB? Hope the scones are nice……
I have a cousin who grew up on a street containing a cinema. A lady killer now, he grew up as a dark haired Little Lord Fauntleroy. Long black curls, cute smile, and the rest.
He’d stand on the front fence as the little old ladies walked up the street to go to the matinee saying “Hello” and smiling. They’d pause and say “Hello” back and comment on how delightful he was. Then as they took off he’d say “Ya Dickheads”.
It was terrible but oh so funny at the same time.
‘Haha, TB’s being courted by the CWA.’
Put my head over the fence the other day and noted they were making a big effort to woo Trash’s finest reporter. TB might be their best chance for them to get a first rate comic on staff, they badly need it.
To be fair, TomR is quite the wit at times, but can’t carry the show on his own.
‘and then, egg, follows with boring opinions on CO2 …’
Reb has cured me of this affliction (for which I utter many thanx to the blogmaster) and I no longer require supervision when mixing with the general public.
And as I mentioned before, isolating me in the back room (CO2 and You) was a brilliant way of eliminating the problem. It’s certainly better than my cell at Deltoid.
Off to the matinee, TB? Hope the scones are nice……
Actually, James, a bottle of bubbly, Pekin’ Duck in really nice, delicate pancakes, onion rings and fries … very noice …

I think you’ll find all cinema’s are the same …
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was terrible but oh so funny at the same time.
That little tale says so much about you, James … remember we were discussing the validity of NVCs ‘tother day? 😉
A child grows to to adulthood influenced by 50% genes and 50% environment, I reckon … 🙄
I think you’ll find all cinema’s are the same …
That’s pretty awful communication, apologies … I meant to say that the menus seem to be the same for all Gold Class cinemas …
NVC’s?
That post (NvCs?) also tells me how much you actually comprehend … just more NVC … you are studying to practise law in the courts aren’t you? Dealing with people as a solicitor or mediator or SQ?
WTF are you talking about, TB? You do understand I work, study, parent, and have a wife. Many of my online conversations are forgotten five minutes after I have them…….
“Going to Penang in October for a couple of weeks. Staying at the PARKROYAL Penang Resort. What ‘experiences’ should I not miss?”
Hello “A traveller.”
Firstly, If You’re staying at the Park Royal in Georgetown – I wouldn’t call it a “resort”. It’s quite old and run down. (At least it was the last time I stayed there).
There are some newer boutique hotels in Georgetown that would probably be cheaper and nicer.
In terms of experiences not to be missed,. here are a few…
1. Visit Kek Lok Si temple (you’ll need to catch a taxi as it’s quite far out, but worth a visit).
2. Visit Khoo Khongsi temple in Georgetown.
3. Take a stroll around little India and Chinatown in Georgetown.
4. Batu Ferringhi nite market is a must for shopping but bargain hard. Don’t buy fake DVDs here as they are always crap. If you want to buy DVDs buy them from the shops on the top floor of Prangin Mall (next to Komtar in Georgetown).
5. Don’t be afraid to eat the street food. Just look for the hawkers’ food centres where plenty of locals are eating.
Let me know if there’s anything in particular you are interested in doing.. There is a lot to do in Penang but it pays to know where to go.
Penang people are very friendly and honest, so don’t be afraid to ask anyone for help with directions or anything like that.
Bring plenty of sunscreen and light cotton clothing.
Hope this helps… 🙂

BOSS – You MUST go to the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart. I think you’d like it a lot…!
A TRAVELLER,
I forgot to mention, the taxis don’t have any meters, so it’s generally a fixed price.
When you arrive at the airport, you will need to buy a voucher to take a taxi. The booth where you can buy a voucher is located outside the front entrance to the airport on the ground floor.
Wicks continues with his fact free stream of consciousness commentary.
“We have already seen that Terry Nassios appears as if he had his strings pulled by Fair Work Australia vice president and Kathy Jackson fiancé, Michael Lawler — who seemingly influenced what was supposed to be an independent investigation.”
I’ve posted a question at “The Independent Australian” blog – awaiting
deletionmoderation.MONA is definitely on our agenda, sreb/Toilette … it was the subject of a current affair program a couple of weeks ago … apparently the owner is being chased for back taxes for gambling (made millions as a member of a “gambling group” – ATO sees it as a business …)
Shall I leave a littel paper trail for you, Toillette? 😉
Greetings from Kuching (Serawak)..
Today we went on a jungle trek and saw live Orangutans in the wild (ie not caged or in a park). Quite an experience…
Happy times with hairy apes?
Today we went on a jungle trek and saw live Orangutans in the wild (ie not caged or in a park). Quite an experience…
They didn’t bother to keep you then? 😆
They would have if you’d worn yer, Jummy bonnet!

BTW … that other fred ye puut u’ is ja’ sa synister … I dayre nae go theyre .. ’tis we’are tha’ poltergeits swarrm … ma’st horid, Jummy! 😯
Thanks, reb, will definitely have a look. I hope the stench of queensland doesn’t permeate the carpets before I get there! 😉
Funnily enough, I’ve been to Sarawak too. Spent several days & nights in Kuching (the malaysian word for cat…complete with cat statues) but lived with the family of a school friend for about a month in a city to the north (towards Brunei) called Sibu.
Very different to Australia, obviously! Got the worst food poisoning I’ve ever had in my life there.
Also tried dusgusting durians, which smell like decaying flesh…never again!
Didn’t get to see the orang utans, that woulda been cool.
My friends father was a higher up in a logging company, so it was ‘interesting’, given that he was likely orchestrative in decimating the orangs’ natural habitat.
I hope the stench of queensland doesn’t permeate the carpets before I get there!
I’ll simply piss on all the best displays … you Toillette, you … actually, ’tis a pity we couldn’t meet up on the, Blogmasta’s, playground and rubbish the shit out of it together!
i’m afraid to say though, I’m rather looking forward to my trip to the Norwegianlands and all that it has to offer .. (fk! Did I say that!)”
having said that … hehehehe ….
PS I just checked out my gloves (very hard to buy in QLD! 😆 ) I have some very noice tight fitting wool, that I wil wear under a pair of rigger’s leather gloves … Cradle Mountain here we come!
“actually, ’tis a pity we couldn’t meet up on the, Blogmasta’s, playground and rubbish the shit out of it together!”
Agreed! I’d have shared a WT with you, mate. 🙂
I have been to Tasmania, when I was about 9yo, and have great memories of it being beautiful. I went to Port Arthur long before the nutter ran loose & actually saw my first ever snow on top of Mt Wellington.
Didn’t go to Cradle Mountain though, so we’re staying there for a while this time too.
Taking the other alf, daughter & my mum. Really looking forward to it, haven’t been away for a few years due to upheavals at work. Can’t wait!
I take it you’re going soon, TB?
I take it you’re going soon, TB?
yep, remember our nemesis (I’ve never shared a nemesis before … ) “listens in” … and we had a burglary recently …
Noice that you’re takin’ your Mum too …
… my first snow memr’ries are about four years old, in Yorkshire’s West Riding … I hate the stuff!
The Minister, who was 18 months old when she turned up in, Oz, from Friesland (wha a descriptive name) , feels nothing below -10 degrees … at 10 degrees here in Brissy its fkn cold … do we put the air con on nup … when it gets to 35 degrees do we put the air/con on … nup … too expensive!
THe Minister for War, Water, Finance, Power and Fun (and soon to be a pproved … Blood Pressure Monitor) … Russ Hinze eat ya heart out!
Thanks for your timely response and apologies for my delayed reaction. (Issues you wouldn’t want to know about)
“I wouldn’t call it a “resort”
Neither would I, but it’s the descriptor the hotel uses. Trip Advisor suggests it’s badly in need of an upgrade.
The ‘deal’ we have at the Park Royal is probably much better than one can normally do on the net. (Somewhat less than $100 a night, including breakfast).)
As for Airport ‘transfers’, they are part of the ‘deal’.
Any advice re Langkawi? Thinking of taking a ferry to and from. Accommodation recommendations?
regards.
To me, he’s just a dumbarse, TB. About as much a nemesis as an irritating housefly.
But yeah, I definitely take your point with regard to proximity & proven unhinged conduct.
He took/takes exception to us (& N5 & YomM, among others) because we dared to disagree with him or laughed at his postcards from fantasyland.
I’m aware that he scans here, so, on that note…
* Tony Mack, you are a self important, name dropping dipshit. I’m sure you impress yourself immensely, but people who have the half a brain that you are missing only laugh at self employed gardeners with airs of widespread influence. You may notice that I just used the word ‘self’ repeatedly…that’s because you are your biggest disadvantage. Finally, go fuck your-self.
With all respects Toilet, Tony Mack is mentally ill and his condition is not helped by having an alcoholic wife (his asserion), an inability to employ a couple of carpenters to build ‘decks’, a failure to become a cattle baron, and now his latest venture to become a registered lobbyist. The list of his faiures is almost endless.
He in in bad need of professional help. BTW, he thinks he’s in receipt of ‘middle class’ welfare (a concept he clearly doesn’t understand).
The truth is he’s unemployed and probably unemployable.
I appreciate all of that, observa.
My hostility stems from past encounters & I’m nobody’s fool; least of all his. I also realise that me throwing nasty handfuls of excrement at an easy target isn’t a particularly dignifying thing for me to do.
I apologise to anyone here that that upsets or offends…but, he is responsible for the stupid crap he’s left forever emblazoned on the internet as much as I.
I wasn’t aware of some of those more recent exercises in self aggrandisement, but I’m not surprised.
I think TB has legitimate concerns.
Also, greetings, if you are who I think you are…& I’m pretty sure you are. 😉
“Also, have about 8 extra days uncommitted. Perhaps one of the islands? Langkawi?”
Been there done that.
5 days absolute max. Hire a car drive around the island. Go up chairlift to top of the islands mtn.sit around reading good book 3 days. But it is a duty free island so a good place to get smashed.
Jaws is right. I haven’t been to Langkawi, but have heard that people usually go there for Nature and Five star resorts. The duty free grog is a bonus.
Probably won’t go to Langkawi for an extended period, given what I’ve read lately.
But some questions re alcohol. I understand that alcohol is relatively expensive when compared to other SE Asian nations. So:
What’s the cost of a can of beer in the supermarkets? In bars (and yes I know the variation will be huge).
Can one fly to KL, with luggage still in transit to Penang and still buy alcohol in KL and then carry it aboard (still sealed) on a domestic flight?
Any recommendations re accommodation in Georgetown?
Other tips appreciated.
