    Amen!

They take their fairy tales far too seriously, methinks. Way too personally invested in their institutionalised fantasylands to be able to tolerate their zany belief systems being ridiculed.

    They’re worse than royals, just.

“They take their fairy tales far too seriously, methinks”

They all do I think. Although there does seem to be a correlation between poverty and a propensity to believe in religious skywizardry…

Maybe those who can afford an education are more likely to question the bullshit?

  5. September 15, 2012 12:00 pm

I’d say that it’s almost certain that a good education is a gateway away from religious indoctrination.
A reasonable understanding of the world casts light upon the disparities between fantasy & reality.
Ignorance is a great petrie dish for religion to propagate itself in.

‘Dear Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and Jews’

Too right! I’m just about fed up with all the violence from Presbyterians every time someone criticises John Calvin.

  7. September 15, 2012 2:25 pm

Doesn’t matter if it’s Calvin, Mohammed, Smith or Tiboor…they’re all grounded in the same fabrications.

But yeah, the violence is a good opportunity for ideologues like iowahawk to go in for a bit of moosie bashing & christ promoting.

This is misdirected, and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the intricacies of football.

The Eagles are a false club, a corporate creation, supported by the most bitter and isolated people on the planet. These are the people who consider Subiaco and Northbridge sophisticated. Bizarre and unbelievable to those of us on the civilized side of the country.

While Collingwood supporters are mainly abusive bigots, and the club is now owned by corporate silver tails, it is not a corporate creation.

Therefore Collingwood is marginally preferred over the Eagles.

    Sydney protesters call for beheadings

In Sydney, shoppers looked on in surprise as protesters, including children, shouted “Down, down USA” and waved banners such as “Behead all those who insult the prophet”.

“We are sick and tired of everyone mocking our beloved prophet,” protester Houda Dib said, as the crowd of about 500 gathered outside the US consulate.

“They have no right to mock our prophet. We don’t go around mocking anyone’s religion.”

“They call us the terrorists,” protester Sarah Jacob said. “But everyone is terrorising our people.”

As a free-speech extremist I do not object to mere signs, no matter how “offensive”. (I do reserve the right to ridicule parents adults mature people persons of a more advenced age that would put them in the hands of unsuspecting children.)

It is the actual violence perpetrated by these groups – claiming to be offended by others’ speech – to which I object.

  22. James of North Melbourne permalink
    September 15, 2012 8:52 pm

I reckon incitement to violence is illegal, regardless of free speech. Anyone else using their kids to commit a crime would get it. I’m not necessarily advocating permanent removal but a line should be drawn. This country has laws and that conduct is incompatible with those laws and that has consequences.

I worry sometimes that our tolerance will be our downfall.

You would need to prove someone committed an act of violence as a result of reading a particular sign to support a charge of incitement. On the other hand, a preacher instructing a devout member of his congregation to rebel violently against a blasphemer might be a proveable case.

    Defending Deveny:

    http://thatsmyphilosophy.wordpress.com/2012/09/13/defending-deveny/

Far from being drowned out by Devenyโ€™s aggressive interruptions, Archbishop Peter Jensen actually racked up a word count double that of Devenyโ€™s โ€“ more, even, than Deveny and the equally loquacious Concetta Fierravanti-Wells combined…

…Indeed! In terms of word count, Jensen even spoke more than the host, Tony Jones!..

…Devenyโ€™s sin is to be an outspoken woman, fearlessly breaking the taboo that says the religious beliefs of others are sacred and should not be publicly attacked. This is a taboo which has kept the religious perpetuation of domestic violence, child rape, child stealing, third-world poverty and the evasion of taxes under the radar for centuries. I think itโ€™s a taboo that has done way more harm than good.

    noun

a person, typically a woman, who engages in sexual activity for payment.

    verb
    [with object]
offer (someone, typically a woman) for sexual activity in exchange for payment: although she was paid ยฃ15 to join a man at his table, she never prostituted herself

put (oneself or oneโ€™s talents) to an unworthy or corrupt use for personal or financial gain: his willingness to prostitute himself to the worst instincts of the electorate

‘The former prime minister said last night that “our Western heritage appears to be so conspicuously absent from the history curriculum reflects a growing retreat from self-belief in Western civilisation”.

‘In a swingeing critique of the government’s national high school curriculum, which is being introduced at various levels in the states through to 2014, Mr Howard said a lack of proper perspective in history teaching would “deny future generations a real understanding of what has made us as a nation”.

Think of a family farm, the kids will do all sorts of work to support it, and Iโ€™m not sure there is any movement to stop them from helping the family earn money (as long as they turn up to school from time to time). Personally I went to PNG as a mercenary but as a training and development manager got involved in the world around me and the families of people I worked with … I now firmly believe the way out of poverty for people is education …

Children need the time and resources to learn … eg in Egypt we handed out pens and notebooks to kids … NOT, ‘baksheesh’ (money) … we had purchased them in London before we flew to Cairo … it was encouraged by the Egyptian government and tourist organisations …

All this earlier talk of JK Rowling

“I chose to remain a domiciled taxpayer for a couple of reasons. The main one was that I wanted my children to grow up where I grew up, to have proper roots in a culture as old and magnificent as Britain’s; to be citizens, with everything that implies, of a real country, not free-floating ex-pats, living in the limbo of some tax haven and associating only with the children of similarly greedy tax exiles.

“A second reason, however, was that I am indebted to the British welfare state; the very one that Mr Cameron would like to replace with charity handouts. When my life hit rock bottom, that safety net, threadbare though it had become under John Major’s Government, was there to break the fall. I cannot help feeling, therefore, that it would have been contemptible to scarper for the West Indies at the first sniff of a seven-figure royalty cheque. This, if you like, is my notion of patriotism. On the available evidence, I suspect that it is Lord Ashcroft’s idea of being a mug.”

(“Spain on the brink of civil war? )”

Did I ever mention that history often repeats itself if left to the whims (and emotions) of human beens?

The Spanish Civil War[nb 2] was a major conflict fought in Spain from 17 July 1936 to 1 April 1939. The war began after a pronunciamiento (declaration of opposition) by a group of generals under the leadership of Josรฉ Sanjurjo against the elected government of the Second Spanish Republic, at the time under the leadership of President Manuel Azaรฑa. The rebel coup was supported by a number of conservative groups including the Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right,[nb 3] monarchists such as the religious conservative Carlists, and the Fascist Falange.[nb 4][5]

Following the only partially successful coup,[nb 5] Spain was left militarily and politically divided. From that moment onwards, general Francisco Franco began a protracted war of attrition against the established government for the control of the country. The rebel forces received the support of Nazi Germany and the Kingdom of Italy, as well as neighbouring Portugal, while the Soviet Union and Mexico intervened in support of the Republican government or loyalist side.

    Now let’s see Wall St Crash 1929 — Great depression begins 1930 — Spanish Civil War begins 1936 … GFC === 2008 … early by a coupla years …

Where’s your humour gone jaws? even I lol at that witty retort, very clever!

No need to get all sanctimonious about it, we all do what we can. This hypocrite lived and worked in australia’s own forgotten third world, aboriginal communities, believing we don’t need to go overseas to assist the needy. I think that people in oz are guilty of…judging “the deserving and non-deserving poor.” I volunteer with refugees here as my bit toward acceptance and compassion for their plight. I try to raise funds/items for them [and there’s not many in the community who will donate].

Think of a family farm, the kids will do all sorts of work to support it, and Iโ€™m not sure there is any movement to stop them from helping the family earn money

I don’t think we can equate ‘chores around the house or farm’ by kids, before or after school when old enough and in their free time, to earn pocket money or ‘help out’ with forced child labour. Children working as adults, beyond their physical and developmental abilities, all day every day.

Oh and just on others home life . Except for comments over a safari suit when have I attacked reb or kitty or you TB over their domestic lives.

Quite often actually, I’m regularly derided by you as a communist or hippy or some kind of wacky person with no idea of ‘how the real world works’. A hypocrite or moron. You are personal and often abusive in your arguments rants.

I donโ€™t apologise for being angry. Iโ€™ve seen it firsthand and I donโ€™t like recalling or being remotely reminded on it.

None of us like it, that is why we disagree with the status quo, why we want change for the better in society.

And if it makes you sick and angry, surely you would be an advocate for impoverished people receiving financial support to send their kids to school, not enforced labour? Clearly the market that you laud has failed these impoverished people. Do you really believe that making a few CEO’s enormously wealthy through child labour is improving the lives of these people? There is NO choice between starving and child labour, neither the kids nor the parents would voluntarily choose that life for themselves.

Thatโ€™s what I sometimes have to do on a Friday yet you morons hate people like me.
No-one hates you, we might dislike what you stand for and defend, but that is your right. We morons show more tolerance toward you than you show us.
I don’t know why a difference in worldview should make you sooo angry, you come in wanting to blast people off the page as if we are somehow wilfully blind to your ‘superior’ knowledge of the world. When we morons choose to differ, you become incoherent with rage. You are so blinkered that you still refuse to even acknowledge where the ‘free market’ fails people.

People who believe they have achieved something with their lives tend to have a degree of self confidence, which can be perceived as a little arrogance.

    Self confidence or self important?

Depends on how you measure achievement doesn’t it? i don’t know how you can define a person or human achievement on the accumulation of $. It is only important if you value wealth creation above all things, wrong thinking in my view.

To someone born without arms or legs, climbing a mountain would be a lifetime achievement, they might be poor in terms of $. Mother theresa [who I met in katherine nt] died poor and took a vow of poverty, is her humanity not an achievement? Is a public servant who toils all his life for the betterment of society a lesser person than a CEO?

If you have walked all over others, stabbed people in the back, got ahead on the hard work of others, never given a helping hand to people in need or generally behaved like an arsehole in gaining your wealth, then as a person, as a human being, you are poor IMO.

… your, “if they went to school they wouldn’t eat” … applies equally to both disgusting situations … the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen isn’t a comedy skit … it’s satire about the poor working conditions in the North of England and how wealthy mill owners tried to justify the exploitation of the working class … and still fkn do (though not in mills – all gone)

I’m not wealthy … but I’m very comfortable … wealth has no interest to me … money is just a tool for your chosen lifestyle … any more is greed … one thing I do know … wealth doesn’t make you smarter, more, knowledable or more life experienced than anyone else …

No, just luckier, and it helps to be white and male because all systems are designed to ensure white males are more advantaged than any other in society. If you can’t be white, being male is next best and they will ruthlessly ensure it stays that way [climate change, oppression of women, gays, laws to enshrine property rights, use of state to oppress dissent etc].

And on values and achievement, a wealthy person doing a few good things for others less fortunate and lucky in life, out of a sense of charity, to feel smug and good about themselves and their contribution, is wrong.

They should be doing it because they know it is inherently an unjust system, that the lottery of birth has allowed them to prosper above others and it is their personal duty as a human being to install change. To try to make a fairer system, so a child born anywhere in the world can have the same chances in life.

… some of my female friends are very succesful senior managers … my own daughter developed and ran two succesful businesses, while raising three boys – two now adults …

… disadvantage is a driver for some and a destroyer for others …

One thing that really annoys me is wealthy or successful people who inherit, saying how they made it on their own … and how difficult it is/was … I have a former friend who is a multi – millionaire that prattles on about that … (he lost me, when my then 10 yo daughter, asked him how he could afford such a big house … “because I work very hard” … did my daughter think then, that I didn’t?)

Alan Jones has just made a complete fool of himself and not for the first time, but his observations on the monk are still worth considering.

“His overweening weakness is his humility. You will never ever hear this bloke argue his ability, his virtue, or indeed his competence,” he said.

“He is a man of incomparable integrity and conviction.”

Jones has apparently issued a humble apology. Fair enough too, his comments were in remarkably poor taste.

Itโ€™s an odd popularity Jones has, heโ€™d never have an audience in Melbourne. But in Sydney all the loudmouths, conspiracy theorists and spin merchants seem to find a grateful audience for their drivel.

Melbourne people are a little more sophisticated – the western suburbs here arenโ€™t quite as vast.

    Long live the speculation stereotypes.
If I speak out about misogyny and sexism, I’m likely to be gay [not that there’s anything wrong with that anyway].

I had just written a para with details of my partner [male] and children [3] and then deleted it as they have no interest in this blog and they have a right to their privacy. tony tells nothing of his life, domestic or otherwise, do you speculate about his family and sexuality, is he even male? ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you are unhappy about your domestic stuff being satirised, then don’t write about it. Why you feel the need to gloat about BMW’s and boating whilst talking of running people over in that BMW and feeding people to sharks [presumably tied up in a chaff bag] says more about you then us. Jones, thinking he was clandestinely preaching to the choir, overstepped the mark…AGAIN.

My favourite Jones idiocy was his screeching about the government making the police prevent non-existent trucks from the Convoy of No Consequence [featuring bandwagon humper de jour- Tony Mack] from entering Canberra to join the ‘throng’ (guffaw).

I also like the Young Lib organiser’s outright denial…until he realised that there was recorded evidence of the stupid, taboo comments; whereupon he revised his apologetics to…”I didn’t hear it” & “you shouldn’t pick Alan’s comments apart”.

Former ALP ‘heavyweight’ Bernard Finnigan, from nearby Mt Gambier, is headed in the same direction, reb.
His name has only recently been publicised in SA, but it’s been well known around here for the last year or so since the police first raided his home & parliamentary office. At the time he was SA Police Minister.

I know several people very well who went to the Catholic School in Mt Gambier with him. He is on the record, pumping himself up as a ‘servant of Christ’ as he was elected to the Legislative Council in SA.
I hope he does hard time & lives every minute of it in fear.
