The Secret Life of Julia Bishop
Julie Bishop says Indonesian ministers have privately promised to help turn back people-smuggling boats.
According to Ms Bishop, a number of senior Indonesian ministers and officials have made a secret commitment that Indonesia will cooperate with a Coalition government to turn back people smuggler boats.
“I have had a number of conversations with high-ranking Indonesian ministers and officials, as has Scott Morrison, as has Tony Abbott, and I am convinced we can work in cooperation with Indonesia to achieve our policy aim,” she reckons.
“Professional diplomats are paid to present particular views but what goes on behind the scenes can be quite different – what people say privately can be different to what they say publicly,” she said.
“And we have had wide ranging discussions at the highest levels on this issue.”
However, her comments are at odds with the Indonesian ambassador to Australia, Nadjib Riphat Kesoema, who said last week that Indonesia would not accept asylum seekers from boats returned under the Coalition’s stated policy.
“No such collaboration will happen,” said the ambassador.
Yesterday Julie Bishop insisted her position on Indonesia’s position is the right position even though it is completely at odds with Indonesia’s position on its own position.
“I would expect the ambassador to say those things publicly,” she said
Meanwhile, Ms Bishop says she saw “no evidence” of human rights abuses during a recent visit to Sri Lanka with Immigration spokesman Scott Morrison and Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Keenan in January.
“Yes, there was a bloody end to a bloody conflict…but what I saw was what is happening on the ground now and I saw no evidence of human rights abuses now. We asked for evidence from the Tamils…we spent our first three days with them…they were not able to produce any evidence of human rights abuses.”
Asked about reports about human rights abuses Bishop said “I’ve read the human rights reports from human rights watch and it did not verify any of the claims, it said evidence was available but it didn’t say what it was…I saw a country coming to terms with the aftermath of a bloody civil war.”
Bishop is correct, people smuggling laws have been tightened in Indonesia and a secret agreement has probably already been struck to turn the boats back.
As for the Tamils, they only want a better life.
… probably … such an inconsequential word …
Bishop is part of government in waiting, a deal has almost certainly been struck.
‘Bishop said Indonesia would welcome a tougher Australian policy against people smugglers because “it is also struggling with a surge in the people smugglers trade and it is frustrated Australia is not doing enough to stop being seen as an attractive destination.”

Aljazeera TV News just reported, yank military personnel suicide 1_per_80_minutes and is now generating a higher body-count than yanks kia, and has been for some time now

history shows us history is often ignored
Indonesia doesn’t care about people smugglers … and it certainly doesn’t want more mouths to feed … no logic to Bishops prattle at all …
If the Libs make too many promises they can’t keep (and they will/are making them) who do we vote for in 2017 …

007 1_per_80 minutes! Where does that figure come from?
Speaking of Foreign Affairs it looks like the Brits are about to shock us all with a sex scandal once again.
It’s been awhile
“a deal has almost certainly been struck.”
“Almost certainly” huh? 🙄
What part of “No such collaboration will happen” don’t you understand…..??
Honestly….
Egg is fast-becoming the rabid right’s answer to Catching Up…… LOL…
‘no logic to Bishops prattle at all …’
Australia has been weak on border protection, which has created problems for the Indonesians. Even some elements in the military have become smugglers.
Abbott might offer them more patrol boats, which will save us all a lot of angst.
1-per-80, aljazeeras number TB, l didn`t catch where they got it from.

” Egg is fast-becoming the rabid right’s answer ”
ROFL.
The shape of the Lib Government to come…
From twitter ……
“Julie Bishop destroys the gentle art of diplomacy by calling Indonesian ministers liars.”
‘Egg is fast-becoming the rabid right’s answer to Catching Up…… LOL…’
Yeah, I know it looks bad, but I’m banned everywhere else.
But will she still allow the joo`s to muck about with our passports in the never-ending pursuit of crotch nuzzling the yanks.?
” I’m banned everywhere else.”
S’okay… We’ll keep you on for novelty’s sake…
Joolee is probably hinting that Jakarta will receive more
kick back`aid` from a Mr-Rabbit pwned Canberra. It’s possible that Julie Bishop is dumb.
‘S’okay… We’ll keep you on for novelty’s sake…’
Too kind.
‘` but I’m banned everywhere else.`’
l`m surprised you can`t join in on Watts and Codlings blogs egg.
Don`t they know quality.
I’m not banned on sceptic blogs, yet, although Watts threatened me once.
It’s possible that Julie Bishop is dumb.
LOL! What can one say … 😆
“ although Watts threatened me once. “
Guffaw. How the hell did manage that.?
Watts had a post up on a press conference from NASA, to be held the next day, on a new discovery related to life elsewhere beyond earth.
Naturally we started speculating and a spontaneous flash mob appeared suggesting this life form maybe more sophisticated than a bit of slime on Mars.
I joined in and Anthony didn’t like the trend, so he threatened all of us to cease and desist or its curtains for the lot of us.
Bishop is blaming the Guardian for misrepresenting what she said.
‘Ms Bishop later sought leave to claim she was misrepresented, adding the publication had since retracted its headline and amended the article.
“At no time did I say in an interview … that the coalition had either negotiated or reached an agreement with Indonesia,” she said.
“Indeed I said repeatedly in that interview that the coalition in opposition cannot reach agreements with foreign governments.”
AAP
“Bishop is blaming the Guardian for misrepresenting what she said.”
Of course she would. But she has form in over-stating her influence in the past.
She’s a fuckwit.
No evidence of human rights abuses in a civil war, eh? Nah, they’re just good clean bloodletting. Ask anyone who survived the FYR conflict in the early 1990s.
As for secret deals with the Indonesians to help turn back asylum seekers boats, Bishop has missed her calling as a great stand up comedian – laugh? I nearly wet myself!
Well, that’s nice. Bishop ‘blames the media’
I don’t think she’s particularly bright.
Walrus thinks she’s a “shag-muffin” though… 😯
I agree Bishop ain’t too bright and she’s definitely opportunistic.
“I agree Bishop ain’t too bright and she’s definitely opportunistic.”
Really…?
Earlier today you said this:
“Bishop is part of government in waiting, a deal has almost certainly been struck.”
Weathervane much egg/CU….??
Strangely she’s not really my type.
Bronwyn `s more your type yomm.
😯
(Half time at the footy. 😉 )
‘` we started speculating and a spontaneous flash mob appeared ‘`
LOL . of course you were part of a
troll attackspontaneous flash mob, as always 🙂‘Weathervane much egg/CU….??’
A secret agreement has been struck, but the Bishop is a dill for telegraphing it … so undiplomatic of her.
Newspoll has ALP at 30% pp
When will these polls move closer ?
LOL
‘Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan looks set to lose his Brisbane seat of Lilley, with internal polling suggesting Labor will struggle to retain any Queensland seats at the September 14 federal election.
‘In a result even worse than the 1996 ”baseball bats” election, when Labor was reduced to two of the then 26 seats in Queensland, Labor may retain only one MP – former prime minister Kevin Rudd.’
