GetUp takes on TV networks over refusal to show anti-Murdoch advert

September 4, 2013
tags: ,

Australian commercial television networks have refused to air an advertisement that criticises News Corporation and depicts a man using a copy of the Courier-Mail to pick up dog mess.

The ad, paid for from a “six-figure sum” crowdsourced from supporters of the activist group GetUp, accuses the Courier-Mail and Daily Telegraph of running a political campaign and their owner, Rupert Murdoch of running an agenda to get rid of Kevin Rudd.

“Fair enough, we all have an opinion,” says the actor, while using the newspaper to clean up after his dog. “But political bias presented as news is misleading crap. Don’t let the crap decide your vote. Stand up for what you want. Tell Rupert we’ll choose our own government.”

The commercial was aired on Brisbane’s Channel Nine but has since been dumped. Channels Seven and Ten refused to show it from the outset.

GetUp will lodge a complaint with the Australian competition and consumer commission (ACCC) on Wednesday, seeking “clarification” on whether the rejection was appropriate or an abuse of market power.

“We’re not necessarily arguing that they are all acting in concert, but they are all doing the same thing and having the same result,” GetUp’s national communications director Rohan Wenn told Guardian Australia.

“The feedback from GetUp members and non-members has been quite uniform and extraordinary. People seem really quite concerned. Our members are pretty angry that they donated a significant amount of money to run this ad in this crucial time before the election.”

The TV networks said they would not air it because it criticised another media organisation. When contacted, channel Ten refused to comment. Nine and Seven have been approached for comment.

A spokesman for the ACCC told Guardian Australia that the commission cannot comment on specific issues or complaints, but generally “suppliers or goods or services, such as media outlets, have the right to choose who they supply goods and services to”.

Wenn said that GetUp can’t get the ad on air after midnight on Wednesday, when a blanket ban on election advertising comes into force.

“We don’t expect the ACCC to come back before the election, but we think this is a longer term argument,” he said.

The ad has been widely shared online, with more than 265,000 views on YouTube and at least 3,800 shares from the group’s Facebook post alone. However, Wenn said GetUp wanted to reach the audience that does not have social media.

“We wanted to reach everybody. We don’t think it’s appropriate that the networks can arbitrarily say ‘we are denying you access to these people’ when they’re using public airwaves to run their business,” he said.

“You’ve got the remember, these aren’t like regular businesses. They only exist because they have a licence to use the public airwaves. With that licence should come some responsibility to our democracy.”

Good video. Although I can’t understand why he put it in the bin. Pontificating leftists usually feast on dog shit.

Why did the non-Murdoch media not run it? Now it is going viral – which goes to show the increasing irrelevance of the legacy media.

“Our members are pretty angry that they donated a significant amount of money to run this ad in this crucial time before the election.”

This is too funny for words. The Getupthemselves! crowd of aging public servants can afford to take the hit. It is not as though the video was going to change anything anyway. Sure they won’t have the pleasure of massaging their crotches as they sit in their comfy chairs congratulating themselves on their revolutionary cred as they watch the ad. But now they can get all hot and bothered, shrieking to anyone who will listen about how the media is so unfair. I hope they enjoy their pious ejaculations.

‘Vote for me because my daughters are hot” appears to be Tony Abbott’s main political pitch to the Big Brother housemates.

“It’s a cartel operating to deny the expression of a legitimate political point of view”

But that’s not upto the ACCC to determine.

Its simply a refusal to supply a service which it seems they are entitled to do. And in this case it does not directly increase profits.

Just because corporations or individuals talk to each other about their customers does not make it illegal. I’ve attended plenty of meetings with competiitors where we’d discuss customers that are difficult to deal with or just plain unpleasant.

Usually it would be about slowness to pay or constant disputation over was was said/ordered by the customer previously. Quite often we’d refuse to supply when need be.

It’s a cartel if there is no other available avenue for the organisation to express a genuine political opinion at a time when all others are expressing theirs freely.

Business can hold governments to ransom, threaten a capital strike and rip off customers, but how dare informed consumers organise for a collective customer boycott!

Show me where getup has blocked or forced a cancellation of anyone at anything, a protest is not a blockage like the channels are doing. If an organisation would rather cancel an event due to their own member complaints or won’t face a democratic protest from the citizens of the community that is their decision alone.

‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ” ‘ Channel 10 said outright on the phone that they wouldn’t run the ad because it criticises another media outlet. Lachlan Murdoch is on the company’s board. We’re sure the two are totally unrelated.
Channel 7 refused the ad because “the creative execution was considered distasteful and potentially offensive to our audience, so we have decided to make a stand.” So noble. We created a new version of the ad with the ‘offensive’ bits blurred out. They didn’t respond.
Channel 9 at least approved the ad, and ran it for four days. In fact, 615,800 people have already seen it on 9 across Brisbane. On Monday, they pulled the ad, and blamed it on a “coding error,” saying it never should have run. Whoopsadaisey.

Get ready for the new leftist police state:When agents with the Alaska Environmental Crimes Task Force surged out of the wilderness around the remote community of Chicken wearing body armor and jackets emblazoned with POLICE in big, bold letters, local placer miners didn’t quit know what to think.

Did it really take eight armed men and a squad-size display of paramilitary force to check for dirty water? Some of the miners, who run small businesses, say they felt intimidated. …
The officers were armed and wearing body armor. They were part of the Alaska Environmental Crimes Task Force and were there to check for violations of section 404 of the Clean Water Act, according to several miners who were contacted by the group. Section 404 governs water discharges into rivers, streams, lakes and oceans.
    ….
Miners suggest it might have been better all around if officials had just shown up at the door — as they used to do — and said they wanted to check the water.

    “Murdoch owns 70%”

That is lie perpetuated only by the terminally stupid.

“and has made obvious comment against the government and in favour of the Liberals”

    Diddums indeed!

The Murdoch press is entitled to go as hard as they like against this or any other government. The only issue at stake is their reputation. I would be shocked at any news organisation which did not go after the ALP after its effort to introduce media censorship.

In case you didn’t notice other news organisations have made “obvious comment against the government and in favour of the Liberals” and done so in a more measured (and likely more effective) manner.

Despite the best efforts of the left, there is always hope. For so long as we have free speech people will be able to resist the centralisation of power in the hands of the leftist cabal or any other group that wants to shut their opponents up.

In your opinion, some of us want to move forward not stagnate in the corrupt old way of doing things. The left is allowed to have their political representation just as the jackbooted fascist right does. The distortions are what is hidden from the public, the politicised public service, the funding of front groups and industry lobby groups like the extremist IPA being accepted and pushed as mainstream. The political spamming/robocalling that has been imported from the US.

It is time the two majors headlock on their brand of democracy was removed from them and the entire system cleaned up, time for some open transparency. The voters are treated like saps.

With a bit of luck the LNP will face a reasonably friendly Senate.

In Melbourne we’ve had the CFMEU placing advertisements that target specific construction companies – in Murdoch press.

But during an election campaign we’ve had media bans on the expression of a legitimate political opinion.

The TV stations are the other side of the coin to CW types. They prefer to ban testing opinions too.

IT’S ALL A COMPLETELY DISGRACEFUL DISGRACE!!!!

    snacky,
    .
    ‘ ‘ ‘ Murdoch owns 70% ‘ ‘ ‘
yeah sure, circulation is falling, this is an `old` number,
    new number is `about` 65%,
    (average national circulation)
    .
    ‘ ‘ ‘ and has made obvious comment against the government ‘ ‘ ‘
    100% correct
    .
    ‘ ‘ ‘ and in favour of the Liberals’ ‘ ‘
    also 100% correct

  72. September 5, 2013 1:31 pm

    btw snacky,
    .
    `average` circulation is popularly reported/quoted,
but take into account, some places are single paper towns,
some are ruperts therefore 100%, some no-rupert therefore 0%,
    teh-hun and teh-terrgraph both `around` 68% in their capitals,
    (don`t remember for others)

    Correct.
What is commonly quoted/reported is `ruperts`circulation`
    .
    ‘ ‘ ‘ Circulation means he’s done quite well at his gig.’ ‘ ‘
    eye of beholder, l guess,
all circulation numbers are in free-fall, (not afr)
    .
the point l think you missed, is the 70%, now 65%,
is an `average` so it will always be `incorrect` when applied to a `specific` event

‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ If Australian men can see nothing wrong with abbott pimping his daughters and his ramped up sexist commentary, it is a sad indictment on male attitudes and behaviour in this country.

    Tony Abbott’s daughters: are women just ornaments?’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘

Sorry armchair, not with you on this one,
    mr-rabbits bunny`s are `choosing` to be pimped,
you and the guardian author are not looking at the `long` game here, but only the short-term `feminsta` view. The bunny`s are out and about, gaining public (therefore_corporate) exposure for soon to be had career-paths, my bet, in something `ornamental`. (tip, Put this on your Watch-List)
    .
Remember the bunny`s have been raised in largely a privileged environment, even back-bench pollies earn over the top wages, that is a `multiple` of what many of us earn, with biz, media and political contacts much closer to the bunny`s than the rest of us, the bunny`s are being set for as seat on the gravy train.
