Why are people so unkind about Sophie Mirabella?

September 12, 2013

sc-thumb_mirabella_20130910074420654546-620x349

Sophie Mirabella is one of the Liberal Party’s most committed ideological warriors.

Born Sophie Panopoulos in Melbourne in 1968, she has spent much of her adult life in the political trenches.

Her foes are not just ALP members but also those Liberal colleagues who do not conform to her view of Liberal ideology.

During her career Sophie has had little time for ideological opponents. When Liberal moderates questioned the Howard government line on asylum seekers Sophie labelled them ‘political terrorists.’

Last year she attacked former PM Malcolm Fraser’s criticisms of the Bush administration, saying he was guilty of either ‘intellectual sloppiness or deliberate dishonesty’ and accused him of supporting Islamic fundamentalism.

In February 2008 she was one of five Liberals who were not present when the motion of apology for the stolen generations was passed and later said that there was “no evidence that any children were ever truly stolen.”

Sophie Mirabella has earned a reputation for being a bit coarse and unrefined, but is she simply misunderstood?

Is it just because she’s a one woman Wog wonder with enviable sex appeal..?

In order to get to the truth, we traversed the interwebs to uncover the “real” Sophie Mirabella…..

According to Fenella Souter in the Sydney Morning Herald, Mirabella is known for her “caustic, confrontational manner”.

Her behaviour has prompted her to be ejected from parliament on a number of occasions.

In 2007, David Hawker expelled Mirabella from parliament for shouting at him after being warned twice to resume her seat. She defied parliamentary orders and was expelled from the House of Representatives for “misconduct.”

In 2010, Peter Slipper expelled Mirabella from parliament once more on the eve of the vote on the carbon tax, when she “refused to accept a ruling barring her from tabling an anti-carbon tax petition”.

On a number of occasions her comments both inside and outside of parliament have attracted controversy.

In 2008, Mirabella stated in parliament to Julia Gillard, who is childless, “You won’t need his (ex-PMKevin Rudd) taxpayer-funded nanny, will you?”

Mirabella again created controversy on 2 March 2011, when she compared the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to Muammar Gaddafi, claiming that both were “delusional.”

Then Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, refused to condemn Mirabella, instead calling the comparison “colourful.”

Last year, Mirabella denounced fellow Liberal NSW Senator Bill Heffernan by telling him to “Oh, why don’t you go and pop your Alzheimer’s pills”. This was in response to Heffernan branding a fellow Liberal senator a “fuckwit”.

Prior to the 2013 Federal Election, retiring independent MP Tony Windsor nominated Mirabella for “the nasty prize” when asked who was the person he would miss least in politics.

“She is the nastiest — I reckon if you put it to a vote to all politicians, she’d come up No.1”.

Here at The Gutter Trash we therefore conclude that Ms Mirabella is simply misunderstood.

Personally I don’t see much wrong with this, 40 years isn’t much in this day and age, particularly when mature men are so virile and active.

What I did find pleasing about this blog during the election was that no matter how often a certain person linked to rumours about politicians’ private lives, they were ignored. People here are non-judgemental about other people’s personal lives, apparently.

Slate: Dazed and Confused: If your foreign policy has to be rescued by a dictator, you are doing it wrong.

“President Obama cannot take all the credit for sowing confusion. Secretary of State John Kerry also has the unique distinction of becoming the first chief American diplomat whose offhand quip at a press conference launched a last-minute, global diplomatic initiative to disarm a murderous dictator. Kerry never thought that he was making a bold bid to avert military strikes that his president’s party and public had no interest in supporting. He simply suggested that if Bashar al-Assad handed all of his chemical weapons over in a week, that might stave off an impending U.S. attack—and of course, Assad wasn’t going to do that. The State Department rushed forward to clarify that Kerry wasn’t floating an actual proposal—he was just speaking rhetorically. You know, riffing. To say that the Obama administration is freelancing when it comes to foreign policy is an insult to freelancers.”

“At least 30 days of Labor having no formally endorsed LOTO”

Doug Cameron noted that the new rules were a good thing. He was in the UK during the most recent leadership change. He observed that the rules for choosing a new leader worked quite well. Because of the need to involve the membership, there was much public discussion of the policies principles and values the protagonists stood for.

If the ALP politicians can exercise a bit of restraint in the interregnum the public will see an open, fair and democratic process in action and that will be a big plus for Labor.

Old faction men like Richo want to return to the old system. Their fears are misplaced and their motives questionable.

The ALP does need to amend the rules to allow for an interim leader in circumstances where the deputy chooses to stand. I expect that caucus will meet and modify the current system, but allow the membership to vote. The worst case is that they get spooked by the naysayers, abolish the new rules and pass up this opportunity to begin the necessary renewal of the party.

If someone pipes up and says “My name is Kevin and I’m here to help” they should run a mile! 🙂

It might work in the UK. But they have fixed terms dont they ?

So the ALP could in theory be pole axed by a LNP PM calling an election right in the midst of an ALP Leadership vote.

I think the LNP slogan might be “Who Are You Voting For” ?

    LOL

The fixed term thing is only new in the UK. The membership and unions have participated in leadership ballots since 1981 without major problems.

I don’t see the opportunistic calling of an election here as a big issue as it is going to be rare for a spill to occur except after a lost election. In any case caucus can alter the rules at any time and could adapt the process to suit the circumstances.

Also, if the Libs called a snap election early or mid-term they would probably be punished for it. That is why early elections are unusual.
