“Life is like Sanskrit read to a pony.” ~ Lou Reed
“I tried to give up drugs by drinking.”
Lou Reed
“Reed’s greatest impact may have been with an act that sold even fewer records than he did: The Plastic People of the Universe, a Cold War-era Czech act that briefly flourished before being prosecuted and harassed by the country’s Communist Party government.
“That prosecution, in turn, helped push Vaclav Havel to write the Charter 77, a demand for human rights that became an international cause celbre. The uprising that helped overthrow the regime, in turn, took its name from Reed’s old band: The Velvet Revolution. Havel spoke during the revolution about Reed’s influence on him, and appeared with him after he had become the Czech president.”
Brown stone building…
‘I think life is far too short to concentrate on your past. I rather look into the future.’
Lou Reed
I agree with these sentiments.
Good for you egg, good for you… 🙄
Lou Reed Did not join the mainstream, he defined it… Lou Reed led and others followed.
He is the high priest of a movement that redefined rock and roll taking elements of dylan’s innovative turn of phrase and combining it with wahol’s pop art media at the factory. He is the embodiment of great art, not a great singer, not a great guitar player but a brilliant songwriter and social commentator. His greatest contribution is an everlasting influence that changed popular music forever by telling it like it is and his work is still is a lightning rod for reality. Lou Reed smashed down walls and barriers with the sheer brute force of intellectual rigor, poetry and fearless observation, He treated the mainstream media with the contempt they deserved , playing them like a fiddle where the joke was on them, a trick he learned from Andy.
A poet, a writer, a minstrel and a great man who will be remembered long after the bitter glitter of pop fades.
RIP..Goodnight Ladies Goodnight.
Bowie and Ronson at their best reinventing an icon
Well said Ricky.
Oh brother Reed,

may you rest peacefully with your dog.
Amen.
He raped metallica into further credibility deficit (if that is even possible) prior to expiration.
A whole generation of rock and roll stars are edging off stage towards the exit.
Is Mick Jagger 70 yet?
How has it happened?
They defined rebellious Youth. They were going to die before they got old. But they ARE getting old.
Some like Lou and Mick and Keith get old without losing the danger-edge which defined their youth.
Others turn into any-old-geezer.
My sweet Lord, George Harrison wore a cardigan towards the end. And a little bucket hat.
He looked like any Northern grand-dad shuffling off to place a bet on the dogs.
Where did his magic go?
It went to YouTube where they all stay young, beautiful and dangerous.
‘Good for you egg, good for you…’
I can feel you taking the piss.
Insults were better at Trash, but sadly the place is mellowing and with star anchor Wally still in Serendib number crunching, it’ll be quiet around here for a couple of weeks.
sadly the place is mellowing
Only because you because your pantywaist politeness shows a total lack of imagination you dumb cnut!
I can feel you taking the piss.
I thought that was your specialty, Trough Man.
“it’ll be quiet around here for a couple of weeks.”
Well wake the fuck up, stop basting yourself in clacker lacquer and start throwing some shit around instead of trying to drink it through a straw.
And lay of the Climate Change BS. You need to get a life. The time for fellating that dead horse has long passed.
😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
CLASSIC!!
I’m just warming up. That cross-dressing, opiniated blow-hard TB is next on the list.
What splatterbottom said!
Cheers egg. Anyone else might have taken it the wrong way!
Not me, but nevertheless, like all good satire it touches the bone.
Many years ago I went to see a Barry Humphries stand up at the Seymour, pack to the rafters with leftoids. He took the piss the whole time and they laughed until the tears were rolling.
It was a deeply moving experience.
What is all the fkn fuss about?
Drugged up drunken fkn reprobate who thought he knew it all and didn’t know shit!
Lou Reed’s Stand for Israel and against Anti-Semitism
“Perhaps even more than other American-Jewish rock stars such as Billy Joel and Bob Dylan, Lou Reed was fiercely proud of being Jewish — and included lyrics on behalf of Israel and against anti-Semitism in some of his songs.
“I mention Reed’s Jewishness because not a single obituary I have read of him in the mainstream press mentions it, when for Reed it was an important factor.
“Reed, who died yesterday of liver failure at the age of 71, was born Lewis Allan Reed to a Jewish family in Brooklyn. He said that while “he had no god apart from rock ‘n’ roll” his Jewish roots and standing up for Israel meant a lot to him. He was a frequent visitor to the country, last performing in Tel Aviv in 2008, and his aunt and many cousins live in Haifa and other Israeli towns…”
I recall Lou Reed doing a solo acoustic set during the infantile death-rattles of the ‘Alternative Nation’ festival, Melbourne, c. ’95.
When the crowd response to his presence and opening number was perhaps less than ideal, he berated everyone there, calmly informing us that we were too young to ‘get’ him, that we didn’t know music, that maybe we should have researched who he was before daring to turn up at one of his shows…
I can remember thinking, “What an arsehole…”. Now I look back, and, I think he was right. But, really, what did he expect…? And whose ridiculous idea was it to make that set acoustic?
Aside from that, R.I.P., Lou.
Beginning to think this is more of a Abba crowd dressed in Kmart leatherette. 🙄
I saw John Cale at a pub in Auckland in New Zealand in the late 1980’s…
He was terrific live..
Lou Reed always struck me as a miserable sod.
Try and find a photo of him smiling.
“Beginning to think this is more of a Abba crowd dressed in Kmart leatherette.”
I can understand why one or two of our contributors from Queensland might give you that impression
TWO! There’s more than one!
So, sb, gets away with “satire” (says egg) and I get slagged! Fkn charming! 🙄 🙄
This Lou Reed thing is a bit like the Steve Jobs, Messiah shit from the Apple Fanbois … their mothers called ’em fkn Brian! 🙄
Watch the Documentary Rock and Roll Heart.. he is actually a pretty funny guy..he has that Jewish sense of ironic humor. He took his media pretty seriously because he saw what happened to Andy so he used to fuck with peoples head all the time..
love this interview for an early Australian tour…
Classic

Lou could be profound sometimes.
“There’s only X amount of time. You can do whatever you want with that time. It’s your time.”
‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘bit like the Steve Jobs, Messiah shit from the Apple Fanbois’ ‘ ‘ ‘
Yeah, l tend to agree TB,
l only know the `one` song of Reeds, but then again, l don`t follow any form of the celeb stuff, including teh-firm, so l`m probably not the best judge,
.
l guess `Liver`failure, qualifies as a proper`rock-star` death,
make a nice change from choking on ones vomit.
A lot of Lou Reed’s “work” was utter shit. Not just the pretentious and unlistenable Metal Machine Music but feeble attempts at “pop” with forgettable albums like New Sensations (1984).
He created some great music with the Velvet Underground and a couple of solo albums in Transformer and Berlin, but apart from that, his solo work is pretty much forgettable.
Yeah he has all your albums that influenced two generations too. Never ceases to amaze me the vitriol aimed at Jobbs, anyone here use a touch screen? watch a CGI movie?
Whats all the fuss about? nothing that is relevant to the ignorantly art challenged.
“l guess `Liver`failure, qualifies as a proper`rock-star` death,
make a nice change from choking on ones vomit.
Hmmm, I’m not convinced.
Anyone can die of liver failure, but it takes a certain type of style and finesse to drown in a pool of your now vomit.
‘…nothing that is relevant to the ignorantly art challenged.’
Steady on comrade, its a generational thing. Besides, its not necessarily art … more arty.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-28/awkward-lou-reed-interview-moments/5049494
Nice find Ricky,
l`m glad Reed enjoyed hammering teh-media 😆
‘ ‘ ‘ ‘Anyone can die of liver failure’ ‘ ‘ ‘
Liver failure takes quite a bit of effort in the self-abuse department, 90% of the Liver will be destroyed before it`s owner shows any sign of illness. Tho, not the style and finesse of vomit-drowning or david-carridine-ing in a closet 🙂
#grasshopper
I watched those interview clips Ricky, and all it does is reinforce my view that he’s just a bitter old queen who’s strung out because he doesn’t do heroin anymore.
There’s nothing eminently likeable about the guy (not that that matters), but his arrogance knows no borders…
He’d just be another strung out poverty stricken junkie if it wasn’t for Warhol’s purse strings…
No wonder he showers Warhol with adulation, he’d be no one without his financial support….
“A lot of Lou Reed’s “work” was utter shit.”
Yeah, like the aforementioned recent raping of metallica. They were actually doing a pretty decent job of shitting in their own nest, for the last decade & a half, without him further soiling the brand.
I didn’t think it was possible to turn the death of a niche performer into a pro-Israel political wankfest, but I was quite wrong.
Dunny, never under-estimate the quantity and quality of derp re-molded into a pro-Israel political wankfest. by teh-usa and their crotch-sniffers.
It certainly smacks of various US rightwing meme clearing house sites.
I love how ‘not supporting’ Israel is so quickly labelled as ‘anti-semitism’.
It makes me ponder the dissonant cognition of conservatives. They make similar arguments against being labelled as ‘sexist’ or ‘racist’…but think nothing of wielding the ol’ anti-Semitic rhetorical bludgeon.
Don`t forget, not supporting teh-usa is `terrorism` 😆
Holly came from Miami FLA
… the vitriol aimed at Jobbs,(sic) anyone here use a touch screen? watch a CGI movie?
Its not vitriol its fact … over myth … “he’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy …” Job’s was a great marketer … period … and I admire that in him …
egg, made the “generation point” … some of us grew up with the progress and demise of many digital products – my first PC cost me $10, 000 with 100Mb of RAM! (my first computer was an Amiga with 512Kb and a 1Mb “brick” of additional memory …
My first video capture card cost me $1000 I was earning around $24,000 (gross) as a manager … the image was 240×180 max … I could capture “coloured” images using an RGB wheel capturing the same image three times … at the 1992 Brisbane Computer Show only the guys from Commodore new what a bloody video capture card was … 1992!
… the “ownership” of video editing for bigscreen went to Apple it was a superior graphics product no doubt … but in fact “bread and butter” videos in small studios were edited on “professional” Commodore consoles the Amiga was the consumer product but Commodores graphics, speed and especially cost usually won the day over Apple with the small business professionals…
Everyone who played with graphics wanted an Apple – until Microsoft caught up and it has … its not vitriol its fact … Apple “own” something like 8% of the computer market and a whopping 16/17% for iphones … tablets is 50% I believe … over priced and non expandable products … and as I understand it Apple is slowly losing market share on all fronts* … and wasn’t it Jobs who said that small tablets would never make it?
… until I retired I was always an early adopter ,,, operating my own business it was worthwhile to be able to say to client IT Managers (especially the Empire Builders) … “aren’t you using that yet?”
Who do you think paid for all that R&D (that Jobs ripped off purchased for Apple) 😉

“I love how ‘not supporting’ Israel is so quickly labelled as ‘anti-semitism’.”
Yeah, me too. But who said that? It wasn’t in the quoted article:
“Lou Reed was fiercely proud of being Jewish — and included lyrics on behalf of Israel and against anti-Semitism in some of his songs.”
No, you don’t.
When the BDS movement targets Jewish businesses and Synagogues it is clearly showing its anti-Semitism. The left has a history of anti-Semitism going back through Chomsky all the way to Marx.
TB I hear ya.. Apple has kind of forsaken all the pros who made the company like Avis.. more interested in pink ipads to little girls. Final gut x and illogic x. 🙄 Reb, lou had good reason to be bitter, but he does it so well. Its his Shtick..
“lou had good reason to be bitter, but he does it so well. Its his Shtick..”
Yes, I’m beginning to realise that… 😉
Those interviews you posted were hilarious…!
The left has a history of anti-Semitism going back through Chomsky all the way to Marx.
Conveniently forgetting the National Socialist (ie political right) pogroms across Europe and a particularly nasty “holocaust” in the 1940’s … by the dog-fearin’ Nazis …
Not sure the Jews were popular with too many left, right, up, down, in, out, republic or democracy, black, white, or brindle political wings over the centuries … much like the travellers … the Jews were/are simply tolerated by many people of many political persuasions across the world …
Bigotry is universal … 😉
Just my opinion … 🙄 🙄
Agreed, TB. My point was that the left is not exempt from this cancerous hatred.
I daresay that anti Semitism was rife with many Christians throughout the ages too. In fact, I know it was.
All on account of divergences within the book of fables…& related coveting of Teh holy land.
I prefer genuine, non-fantastical reasons to base my ‘lack of support’ upon.
My point was that criticism of the state of Israel is not anti semitic.
Yep, a bit like criticism of the, Nazi Third Reich, isn’t anti-German (although it is a reverse analogy, I guess) …
Pointing out teh book of fables nominate them as, `dogs-chosen-delusionals` isn`t anti-sem either.
Criticism of Israel per se is not anti-Semitic. Selectively targeting the one Jewish state in the world raises questions. Selectively boycotting Israeli Universities, while not even attempting similar sanctions against the universities of other states with much worse human rights records than Israel stinks to high heaven.
By the way this court case deserves to fail, not because the proponents are wrong in what they say but because, but because most anti-discrimination law is BS:
If Sydney Uni wants to behave like a racist institution so be it. The better remedy is for the government to withdraw funding until it gets its house in order.
