“Reed’s greatest impact may have been with an act that sold even fewer records than he did: The Plastic People of the Universe, a Cold War-era Czech act that briefly flourished before being prosecuted and harassed by the country’s Communist Party government.

“That prosecution, in turn, helped push Vaclav Havel to write the Charter 77, a demand for human rights that became an international cause celbre. The uprising that helped overthrow the regime, in turn, took its name from Reed’s old band: The Velvet Revolution. Havel spoke during the revolution about Reed’s influence on him, and appeared with him after he had become the Czech president.”

Lou Reed Did not join the mainstream, he defined it… Lou Reed led and others followed.
He is the high priest of a movement that redefined rock and roll taking elements of dylan’s innovative turn of phrase and combining it with wahol’s pop art media at the factory. He is the embodiment of great art, not a great singer, not a great guitar player but a brilliant songwriter and social commentator. His greatest contribution is an everlasting influence that changed popular music forever by telling it like it is and his work is still is a lightning rod for reality. Lou Reed smashed down walls and barriers with the sheer brute force of intellectual rigor, poetry and fearless observation, He treated the mainstream media with the contempt they deserved , playing them like a fiddle where the joke was on them, a trick he learned from Andy.
A poet, a writer, a minstrel and a great man who will be remembered long after the bitter glitter of pop fades.

    RIP..Goodnight Ladies Goodnight.

A whole generation of rock and roll stars are edging off stage towards the exit.

    Is Mick Jagger 70 yet?

    How has it happened?

They defined rebellious Youth. They were going to die before they got old. But they ARE getting old.

Some like Lou and Mick and Keith get old without losing the danger-edge which defined their youth.

    Others turn into any-old-geezer.

My sweet Lord, George Harrison wore a cardigan towards the end. And a little bucket hat.

He looked like any Northern grand-dad shuffling off to place a bet on the dogs.

    Where did his magic go?

It went to YouTube where they all stay young, beautiful and dangerous.

I recall Lou Reed doing a solo acoustic set during the infantile death-rattles of the ‘Alternative Nation’ festival, Melbourne, c. ’95.
When the crowd response to his presence and opening number was perhaps less than ideal, he berated everyone there, calmly informing us that we were too young to ‘get’ him, that we didn’t know music, that maybe we should have researched who he was before daring to turn up at one of his shows…
I can remember thinking, “What an arsehole…”. Now I look back, and, I think he was right. But, really, what did he expect…? And whose ridiculous idea was it to make that set acoustic?
    Aside from that, R.I.P., Lou.

A lot of Lou Reed’s “work” was utter shit. Not just the pretentious and unlistenable Metal Machine Music but feeble attempts at “pop” with forgettable albums like New Sensations (1984).

He created some great music with the Velvet Underground and a couple of solo albums in Transformer and Berlin, but apart from that, his solo work is pretty much forgettable.

  35. October 29, 2013 6:36 pm

Yeah he has all your albums that influenced two generations too. Never ceases to amaze me the vitriol aimed at Jobbs, anyone here use a touch screen? watch a CGI movie?

He’d just be another strung out poverty stricken junkie if it wasn’t for Warhol’s purse strings…

Yeah, like the aforementioned recent raping of metallica. They were actually doing a pretty decent job of shitting in their own nest, for the last decade & a half, without him further soiling the brand.

… the vitriol aimed at Jobbs,(sic) anyone here use a touch screen? watch a CGI movie?

Its not vitriol its fact … over myth … “he’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy …” Job’s was a great marketer … period … and I admire that in him …

egg, made the “generation point” … some of us grew up with the progress and demise of many digital products – my first PC cost me $10, 000 with 100Mb of RAM! (my first computer was an Amiga with 512Kb and a 1Mb “brick” of additional memory …

My first video capture card cost me $1000 I was earning around $24,000 (gross) as a manager … the image was 240×180 max … I could capture “coloured” images using an RGB wheel capturing the same image three times … at the 1992 Brisbane Computer Show only the guys from Commodore new what a bloody video capture card was … 1992!

… the “ownership” of video editing for bigscreen went to Apple it was a superior graphics product no doubt … but in fact “bread and butter” videos in small studios were edited on “professional” Commodore consoles the Amiga was the consumer product but Commodores graphics, speed and especially cost usually won the day over Apple with the small business professionals…

Everyone who played with graphics wanted an Apple – until Microsoft caught up and it has … its not vitriol its fact … Apple “own” something like 8% of the computer market and a whopping 16/17% for iphones … tablets is 50% I believe … over priced and non expandable products … and as I understand it Apple is slowly losing market share on all fronts* … and wasn’t it Jobs who said that small tablets would never make it?

… until I retired I was always an early adopter ,,, operating my own business it was worthwhile to be able to say to client IT Managers (especially the Empire Builders) … “aren’t you using that yet?”

Who do you think paid for all that R&D (that Jobs ripped off purchased for Apple) 😉

Conveniently forgetting the National Socialist (ie political right) pogroms across Europe and a particularly nasty “holocaust” in the 1940’s … by the dog-fearin’ Nazis …

Not sure the Jews were popular with too many left, right, up, down, in, out, republic or democracy, black, white, or brindle political wings over the centuries … much like the travellers … the Jews were/are simply tolerated by many people of many political persuasions across the world …

I daresay that anti Semitism was rife with many Christians throughout the ages too. In fact, I know it was.

All on account of divergences within the book of fables…& related coveting of Teh holy land.

I prefer genuine, non-fantastical reasons to base my ‘lack of support’ upon.

Criticism of Israel per se is not anti-Semitic. Selectively targeting the one Jewish state in the world raises questions. Selectively boycotting Israeli Universities, while not even attempting similar sanctions against the universities of other states with much worse human rights records than Israel stinks to high heaven.

By the way this court case deserves to fail, not because the proponents are wrong in what they say but because, but because most anti-discrimination law is BS:

THE emotive controversy over whether the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel is racist and discriminatory will be tested in the Federal Court after an Israeli organisation launched a landmark legal suit.

Shurat HaDin, an Israeli law centre, has filed papers with the court against Jake Lynch, the director of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at Sydney University, over his support for BDS.

The move follows the failure of the Australian Human Rights Commission, where Shurat HaDin initially filed a complaint against Professor Lynch, to conciliate on the matter.

Shurat HaDin alleges Professor Lynch’s support for the international BDS movement, which promotes the rights of Palestinians and claims Israel is engaged in illegal and immoral actions against them, violates the Racial Discrimination Act.

The court action will focus in part on his controversial refusal to sponsor an Israeli academic from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Dan Avnon, who developed a curriculum for Arab and Jewish students.

Professor Avnon was seeking Professor Lynch’s nomination for a Sir Zelman Cowan fellowship to study curriculums in Australia.

Professor Lynch turned him down, citing his centre’s pro-BDS policy and claims the Hebrew University had links to the Israeli military and the ongoing occupation of the West Bank.

If Sydney Uni wants to behave like a racist institution so be it. The better remedy is for the government to withdraw funding until it gets its house in order.
