Voters Turn on Incompetent Abbott Government

November 25, 2013

  • Dramatic Surge in Support for Labor
  • Coalition looking like a one term government
  • Abbott’s personal approval rating collapses to 1%

Voters have turned against the Abbott government in droves with a new Nielsen poll out today showing that Labor has surged to an election winning position of 52 per cent against 48 per cent for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis.

Labor’s primary support has also surged four percentage points to 37 per cent, while the Coalition’s support before preferences has fallen five points to 41 per cent.

It is the fastest recovery by any federal opposition after losing an election.

Capture

The catastrophic collapse in support for the Coalition comes in the wake of a sudden deterioration in Australia’s relationship with Indonesia.

The Abbott government has so far failed to achieve any of its key election commitments. Joe Hockey promised to end what he called “Labor’s reckless spending” but now wants to increase Australia’s debt by a staggering $200 billion.

According to the Nielsen poll, 50 per cent of respondents disapprove of the Coalition’s handling of asylum seekers, compared to 42 per cent who approve.

Minister for Stopping Immigration Scott Morrison’s “Operation Sovereign Borders” master plan is in tatters with Indonesia withdrawing its support.

On Climate Change, the poll found that Australians overwhelmingly wanted to see Australia meet the nation’s commitment to cut emissions by 5 per cent by 2020 based on year 2000 levels.

No one believes that Tony Abbott’s so-called “direct action plan” will actually achieve anything.  Just 12 per cent of voters believe Mr Abbott’s policy of using taxpayer funds to purchase emissions reductions from polluters, and planting trees, is the answer.

That amounts to a virtual vote of no-confidence in direct action, which has support 4 percentage points lower than the 16 per cent in favour of keeping a fixed carbon price.

    OK TB
I agree its “only the polls” but anyone would think that those polls were the definitive judgement on the Abbott Government They are clearly a rogue poll because the Polls published in the Oz show government support being maintained .

i was not the only one to predict and even better result for the LNP than the very strong position that they currently hold.
That said you surely over egg the pudding to suggest that the Abbott government is in any sort of trouble. It certainly is annoying that Rudd has bequeathed yet another mess to his successor but i have no doubt that Tony Abbott will systematically work through the issues and find a solution.

I have as it happens been writing about the performance of the government, amongst other topics that are rather more interesting to me,

You on the overhand have nothing but dreams of the failure of the government that ore bound to be disappointed by the reality that they grown ups are in charge and they will solve the problems (even the issues from Rudd) in good time.

There is very little need to buy any boats when the government have already reduced the numbers getting on boats by 90%. Thanks largely to the reintroduction of TPVs and a strict adherence to the offshore processing regime. getting Sri Lanka onside has helped too.

This is actually a correct statement Mr Reb.

Under Rudd/Gillard we only took boat people with $10,000. And they most probably were not refugees but economic immigrants like the Mexicans who cross the border seeking a better life in the US.

Under John Howard we took our refugees from UNHCR camps. Morrison is trying to get that system up and working again.

Morrison has given a small amount of hope to people in UNHCR camps which was taken away by Rudd/Gillard and the people who voted for them.

  48. Neil of Sydney permalink

I think you got that wrong (maybe).

I think under Howard we flew in 14000 people from UNHCR camps. The TPV’s were used to stop boat people coming and jumping the queue.

Under Howard most of our refugees came from UNHCR camps. I am not sure how it worked but i guess there was some sort of selection process and if you were lucky you got one of the 14,000 places and were flown in. I don’t know what happened after that. Perhaps someone who works in this area can tell us how refugees were dispersed in Australia under Amanda Vanstone.

In 2007 our detention centers were empty because Howard stopped the boats and we took most of our refugees from UNHCR camps.

Let us hope Morrison can get this much fairer system back up and running.

Iain, in just a few weeks Abbott has managed to almost totally put Indonesia offside. Admittedly they don’t need much of an excuse to behave like prats (look at that idiot President abusing the Austn PM on Twitter – that’s juvenile)

but the fact is we need to keep our ‘friends’ close, lest they become our enemies. As for Indonesia needing us, they only need us as a customer and can easily import or acquire all the other industrial and technological help they need to enter the 21st Century and modernise. So it’s in our interest for Abbott to smooth this over. Somehow I don’t think he’s capable.

The Pacific Solution has never been tested in court.

Not everything needs to be “tested” in court … breaches of state, national and international legislation does not necessarily have to be “tested” to be illegal …

    Conclusion

The legality of Australia’s various amendments to its migration laws will be tested in Australian courts under existing domestic law. Regardless of the outcome of these
challenges, however, these amendments contravene Australia’s duties under international law.

International bodies such as the UN Human Rights Committee, as well as numerous governments and nongovernmental organizations, have criticized Australia for both its
    detention facilities and detention policy.

Inane, there is a long tradition here of challenging BS (on both sides of politics) … over the years we’ve seen a steady trickle of extreme tories and lefties and their BS come and go … the core of TGT actually leans left, right and crosses over quite a lot … we are seekers of knowledge not BS … we are also sarcastic, ironic, have a sense of humour even – where is – Wally? We don’t tolerate fools or extremists (from either left, right or centre) …

Those of us who originally came together to get rid of Howard, will bag the shite out of any pollie who fucks up, whatever their politics … all you have to do is live with it … the Blogmeister is a very tolerant, Jummy! A very rare breed indeed …

    Paul

I doesn’t matter what Inane say’s, the Abbott said he would stop the boats
from the first day of Govt, he hasn’t, so he lied.

He has never said he would stop the boats instantly as you are trying to claim here, frankly cutting them by nearly eighty percent since coming to office sounds damn good to me.

He also said of the unity in gonski, seems like they are backing out of that as well.

Yes he did but when Rudd forgot to actually get agreements signed

Kevin Rudd never signed off on the $1.6 billion deal with the Catholic education sector, nor finalised bilateral funding agreements with the Victorian and Tasmanian state governments before the September election.

“Everything needs to be examined fresh, because the model that Labor came up with is a shambles and quite unimplementable,” Mr Pyne said.

The senior Liberal frontbencher criticised the former government’s overhaul of the school funding system, describing it as complicated, devoid of transparency and “much worse” than the Howard government’s socio-economic status-based funding model it replaced.

“We are going back to the drawing board because we don’t have any choice,” he said.

Mr Pyne’s remarks are set to escalate accusations from Labor that Tony Abbott is breaking the pre-election promise he made when he said there was “no difference” between he and Mr Rudd on school funding.

The Coalition committed during the election campaign to provide the same $2.8bn “funding envelope” to schools over the next four years, but rejected the “strings attached” to the Labor Better Schools model and promised it would reduce the amount of central control the commonwealth would have.

    TB
The problem for you Howard haters is that the replacement Labor government over the last six years have been utterly woeful, from their utter panic about the GFC to Rudd’s high handed and stupid dismantling of the Pacific solution which his apologists insisted would not lead to a flood of boats, To the Climate change panic, Rudd’s total lack of ticker to go to the DD for which he had the trigger. On top of that there has been the despicable plot and counter plot to hold the leadership of the ALP. Frankly I think that if the last six years of labor prove anything its that you should be careful just what you wish for because you Howard haters got the change of government you wanted an it was pretty bad by any measure.
That said I know that Tony Abbott is not perfect, and I know that he may make mistakes while he has the big chair but all he has to do is go slow and steady and he will easily out shine anything that Labor did in the last six years.
While you make some claims of a certain level of impartiality I see very little evidence of it in your commentary or your debating style.

Pau,l what you fail to appreciate is that the whole Gonski thing was a typical Labor creation hastily conceived , badly planned and not even properly executed after the agreements had been made between the feds and the states before the caretaker convention came into force when Rudd called the election.

The sad truth is that for all of the money that has been spent on education over the years we have not seen a commensurate increase in academic performance. This is not at all helped by the socialist belief that everyone could have a PHD if only there was enough education funding . Its utter bollocks there are many people for whom just reading and writing will always be a struggle let alone anything more difficult and no amount of teaching or buckets of money thrown at them will make a speck of difference. I’m not saying that we should just stop trying but the law of ever diminishing returns comes into play in education funding when you have a reasonably mature education system like ow own.

In any event you have no school aged children so what would you know or care about education?

But he said the model negotiated with the former government could not be delivered.

“The Shorten shambles is so incomprehensible, so over-regulated, so prescriptive, so much command and control from Canberra … that they have come up with a model that is essentially incapable of being implemented,” he said.

Mr Pyne said a needs-based funding model was a very good principle, but precious funds were going on regulation and prescription rather than at the schoolyard level.

He declined an offer from Gonski panel member Kathryn Greiner to meet to discuss the previously agreed system.

“No, I’ve studied the Gonski model closely and I have to get on with the job of being education minister,” Mr Pyne told ABC radio.

“It’s time for the government to be allowed to get on with the job, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.”

Government of ‘no surprises’ rewrites history…

Two months after being sworn in, the Abbott government is now at war with conservative states, the Senate and parents across the country.

Not only is the politics of education calamitous, the government risks a High Court challenge to any attempt to walk away from education funding agreements with the states, being blocked in the Senate, and has even raised questions of sovereign risk.

On the political level, Christopher Pyne’s announcement on Tuesday that the government would dump the Gonski education funding model after 2014 is likely to leave voters feeling even more badly done by than they ever did about Julia Gillard and the carbon tax.

    That’s a ridiculous comparison.

Very few people even knew what Gonski was

I’ve got two kids, I hate fkn latte, interact both with my grandchildren’s (I have five two now in their 20s) primary and secondary school and a local school principal is a friend of mine – lives a 60 second walk across the road … do I qualify? 😛

“Other than spending more borrowed money”

If children aren’t learning properly then the answer is obvious to anyone sucking on the taxpayer teat: there’s not enough money sloshing through the education system. State governments love receiving federal money for something that is essentially a state responsibilty, and the federal government loves expanding its power area of influence. Tens of thousands of bureaucrats’ jobs depend on it.

In any event you have no school aged children so what would you know or care about education?

So Inane, what you are saying then, that childless educators should not be teaching because they have no children.

Inane, just because you have children does not make you a good parent. For all we know you could be a child molester, or worse.

I see inane is still quoting from the LNP bible, news LTD.

This mainly has to do with `environment` and `culture` which are the driving force of `moral`, you may recall, l have said before education can`t solve everything/not the total answer.

The amazing thing about those numbers is that the worst government in Australian history, now in Opposition, still gets 47% of the vote.

You bring up a most important point about education in your comment and that is the importance of both social and parental expectations upon educational results. Our own education culture is all about whishy washy personal development hogwash but many Asian cultures are all about hard work and focus on results, its no surprise taht the latter gets more success than the former.

The `culture` aspect l was talking about is that education has merely become another `corporate-culture`/industry demanding to make profit by charging `as-much-as-the-market-will-bear`, this is why l have said education too has become a bit of a ponzi scheme. When there is no jobs to `have` after said `tertiary` qualification, but students/parents have been fee-gouged, it is demoralizing. We now have family`s, both parents working low-paid shit jobs on struggle-street, even tho they both have tertiary education, having the financial stress of sending kids down the same path. There is a lot of bullshit around the `public-education-reporting`.
