Govt of “No Excuses” Blames Indonesia for Surge in Asylum Seekers
Prime Minister Tony Abbott says that Indonesia’s suspension of co-operation is to blame for an increase in asylum-seeker boat arrivals in recent weeks.
Relations between Canberra and Jakarta cooled after allegations Australia’s spy agency tapped the phones of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife and inner circle.
President Yudhoyono has expressed a desire to get the relationship back on track before he leaves office in July 2014.
Mr Abbott is especially keen to see the resumption of co-operation on combatting people smuggling.
“I think one of the reasons why there has been an uptick in boats over the last couple of weeks has been because of this suspension,” he told The Gutter Trash earlier today.
The prime minister said Australia was ensuring protest boats did not leave here for West Papua.
“Well similarly there’s more that Indonesia can do to help us there,” he said.

What does it take for this nematode to realize that while his government didn’t create the problem ( and please, right whingers don’t claim that it was the fault of Gillard/Rudd, this sort of thing has been going on for a very long time and increased in its intensity since 9/11.), all that was required was an admission of embarrassment and an assurance that it wouldn’t happen again – both sides know of course that it will more than likely happen again, because that’s what intelligence gathering is about – but it’s a face saving exercise for the Indonesians and to some extent, Australia.
