TB (and some others) might enjoy the story of this son of Cornwall.
Badass of the Week: Rick Rescorla.
Curious piece of historical pseudo-propaganda.
* I mean ImbalancedScales’ link, not your post, reb. 😉
I thought it a funny yarn.
It was…
Wierd story … ToSY … but “interesting” …
I wonder if Morriscum’s album is cellophane wrapped … HEY! SREB! We could have competition for a copy!
“I wonder if Morriscum”
Morrisscum hey??
Under Scott Morrison refugees from UNHCR camps now have some hope of getting here.
Under your lot (Rudd/Gillard) $$$$$$10,000 would get you in. Rorted like hell it was.
They only scum are the people who voted Labor in 2007.
I see IPA and raise him.
http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2013/04/professor-dawkins-and-aliens.html
“Under your lot” I don’t have a “lot” ..
Your ignorance is astounding!
Your screaming and confusion about immigrants and asylum seekers is really pathetic … you are obviously on some sort of personal crusade or treadmill … its pointless discussing the subject with you …
Finally, did you know that the Liberal Party now runs the country? Guess who is responsible NOW?
I see IPA and raise him.
Duh! The age old question … if there is a Dog where did it come from?
My question is if there is a Dawg … why is it such an arshole to let so many innocents suffer in the world … at the hand of other arseholes … who pretend to believe in the teachings of one Jesus Christ … astoundingly stupid hypocrisy …
Dawkins is accurate.
#Morrison, A hillsong church production 🙂
.
#Badass
l tend to agree with Dunny, scales`osy,
a fine example of flagstabation from teh-usa,
(if ya`can`t beat Vietnam in reality, beat`em in Hollywood)
“My question is if there is a Dawg … why is it such an arshole to let so many innocents suffer in the world”
Then your question actually is: if there is a god, (why) is(n’t) it an interventionist god?
Dog is clearly a teabag invention.
Let`s examine hypocrisy, a teabag staple.
1-Don`t go taking `dogs` name in vain. (blasphemy)
2-Murder, Loot, and take unfair advantage of others in dogs name, hey, no problem.
Then your question actually is: if there is a god, (why) is(n’t) it an interventionist god?
No ToSY …
“My question is … if there is a Dawg … why is it such an arshole to let so many innocents suffer in the world”
Make your own questions up don’t fiddle with mine …
dog has its own ethics problem
We are an experiment and the deities are unconcerned about a little collateral damage.
Dumpty, lets hope the deities provide relief for all those that suffered `frost-bite` in the South-East this week.
One in five stars within the habitable zones has a planet the size of earth, which is neither here nor there. Its the colour of their sol which they find important.
By the way a woman was raped whilst walking across Sydney’s Anzac Bridge a couple of nights ago.
Inner city can be a worry but that bridge is lit up like a Star Chamber.
The cops caught the guy. He’s an Iranian asylum seeker. Anyway he’s another one that is added to the Sydney list of dissatisfaction at open borders (after a number of sex crimes by asylum seekers)
That’s why the polls will swing back to the LNP eventually.
Once the policy is successful it will be all over for the ALP next election.
Abbott is simply prepared to take the bad press to get results that he can later point to.
That’s what governments are supposed to do but many don’t.
Look at Barry OFarrell ( the BOF)
He’s looking gonski at the moment. He looks wimpish.
Abbott ? You might not like him but he’s no idiot.
Anyways
I’m out of here from tomorrow night for 8 days or so.
So don’t fret……. LOL
By the way where are the Monkeys these days?
Phil if you are reading this it means that you are still alive and therefore still a C@@T
But I get the feeling that someone you love has already told you that today .
😉
I also agree that Abbott is doing the hard rounds early on and will still have the stamina to see it through.
There is nothing to stop the LNP staying in power for a decade, with Shorten at the helm of the Opposition.
Who needs facts? We appear to be in the Post-Information Age now…
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/03/post-information-age-benghazi-gop
Interesting article. Trouble is, the writer is attacking a giant straw man.
Criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi debacle did not centre on whether al-Qaida operatives were involved. The major, and since proven, criticism was that the Benghazi attack on the US embassy was not a spontaneous demonstration about some clumsy internet video that insulted Mohammad, as Hillary’s State Department claimed, but was a carefully planned terrorist attack, about which there had been warnings, and which could have been defended against had those warnings been heeded.

How true! People bleat about Sharia Law but say nothing about Christian lobbying/beliefs influencing our own governments …
Hypocrisy writ large …
And yes, I know Christians don’t have public executions anymore … do they?
“but say nothing about Christian lobbying/beliefs influencing our own governments”
It’s hidden in plain sight.
Religious influence on government/culture isn’t necessarily a point of principle, it’s a practical one.
Personally, I’m not so keen on laws that suppress women’s rights and remove appendages as corrective action. But that’s just my opinion.
Is this a new religion?

Religious influence on government/culture isn’t necessarily a point of principle, it’s a practical one.
Religious myth often negates the practical … gay marriage is one glaring example …
Sure TB, and I clearly don’t support the current politically driven outrageous discrimination, but I don’t think the situation would be improved by the imposition of more extreme religious/legal discrimination, such as that promoted by Sharia law.
….and it’s great to see some of the CW participants focus on an area of their personal expertise.
Yes, Catching Up and Phil are having a lively debate about who is the greater expert on welfare!
I liked this from your link above reb. I don’t follow US politics, so not aware of the incident, but, reading our current “debates”, this is sadly true
it undermines serious journalism – and science and history and all other rational disciplines – by rendering their output mere arguments, no more or less credible than someone’s dogma, superstition or gut hunch.
We have that often here, most prevalently in AGW debates, where columnists debate scientific facts from no grounding whatsover BUT faith, against scientists who have spent years of hard toil sorting fact from fiction, only to have to argue publicly against scientifically disproved fiction in the public realm.
No wonder there is so much confusion.
And it is happening all over again in the education realm, where years of study and research has gone into a national curriculum, which is now being challenged all on the basis of a “gut feel” that it is too “lefty”
It hasn’t even been rolled out nationwide yet. How can you determine the effectiveness or not from something that hasn’t even been implemented. Unless you already know your “outcome”
Hmm, so much for Morrisum blaming the Navy
Navy has no command and control role with the vessels.

Finally the Opposition awakes!
“against scientists who have spent years of hard toil sorting fact from fiction”
A science degree renders one immune from the normal human frailties experienced by mere mortals. There are no lazy scientists, apparently.
Phil is from ‘there’?
Why am I not surprised…
I’m sitting on my hill on the coast, drilling scotch, neat, and watching UFC…
Life is good…(apart from all of the heinous mistakes made by the EVIL Obama, whose attackers & detractors are altruistic, not partisan)…
Correct.
Anyone else seen Lone Survivor?
I’d read a bit about Marcus, and wasn’t aware of the movie until recently. A true story of adversity, turned into pro-US war porn by Hollywood.
Still worth watching. A true tale from the failed invasion & occupation of Afghanistan.
Also reading a book at the moment called The Return of a King, about the First Afghan War, in which presumptuous colonialists (the British) get their arses decimated. Interesting insight with some modern world parallels. Noting that, back then, there was no mass media to spin an abject failure & retreat into a ‘strategic withdrawal’…& no drones.

Our teabags are immune to the lessons of history, and still believe Rumsfeld`s estimate that `doubts` it will take longer than six-months to defeat the nation.
Maybe Morrison should do the ad campaigns for sovereign borders, he’s so good at em, just ask the board at tourism Australia 🙄

“A true tale from the failed invasion & occupation of Afghanistan.”
This is very true…It was a mistake to think people living in the 7th century will ever evolve on their own…Better to let them go the way of the dinosaurs…Clearly, not all cultures are created equal, right multicultural Australia?…They are not Germans after all or Japanese or Italians etc…Let them have their AK’s and Poppies….If we are going to invade another country let’s at least pick one that has people who know how to operate a remote control when we hand it over to them.
Or we can just let them keep invading Australia by boat or America by a UN airlift so they can come to the West to squat, piss and moan…At least then we don’t have to worry about them taking a 9 year old wife, beheading her for getting raped or shooting her in the head for wanting to read…Oh wait, they do that here too, genius to import such people instead…
Defeat? I am sorry, is victory declared in such a conflict when the populous finally has running water or when some moron doesn’t pick a weapon up and call themselves Taliban…You can lead a horse to water, can’t make them drink…Water here was the 21st century….
The logic of, we go there bad but bring them here in huge numbers good, its for the children etc.. simply escapes me…Culture is what is “wrong” there, not the “geography”…duh….Africa anybody?
All around MORONIC post dude…
G’day Sparta.
Anyone else seen Lone Survivor?
Yes, a couple of weeks ago … excellent film up there with Saving Private Ryan and Blackhawk Down and The Dambusters (when will Jackson get off his arse and remake it!)
Nice to see Eric Bana back in the acting saddle too …
Isn’t UFC that awful no holds barred street fighting in a cage? I thought you were a “pacifist” … 😯

No-one is “brought” here but the phenomena of refugees coming to Australia after we “help” our misguided big brother – the US of A, has not escaped me beginning with Vietnam boat people and their escape from the fall of Saigon … to the present Afghani escapees … having said that I’ll reiterate … I do not condone acceptance of young men as refugees from any country we are fighting in while our young men and women are risking their lives!

I’m pretty sure he didn’t like that one either, or perhaps is chuffed at being a living embodiment of this “Post-Information Age”
Is it irony that, after making “illigal boats” an accepted terminology for refugees, this Government has also made our own Navy “illigal boats” in actuality?

Well, it is only fair that the countries they plan to outsource us to has good infrastructure. It’s not like we could compete anyway, so best to just throw that old towel in before giving it a red hot go.
After all, isn’t that what we all voted for? A Spineless Government?
I was more impressed by a photo in the Mail of a woman being struct by lightning, it was clearly an act of dog.

Judging by the number of “I want to help you” calls I get from India … they must already have a better system than we do! One told me the other day he was from “Telecom” … coldn’t help myself and asked, “which one?” … silence …. and then …. beeeeeeeeeeeep
Last week I simply kept saying “hello?” … “hello?” … female the Indian … kept saying “can you hear me?” “hello?” then she said, “वह सिर्फ एक arsehole किया जा रहा है” … and hung up.
Much amusement …

Struck a nerve of Sparta’s I see.
He even capslocked ‘moronic’.
Obviously paid no attention to the second part of my comment.
Go read the book, Sparta. You’re way off the mark. And where did I mention anything about Afghan asylum seekers. You simply scanned my words, didn’t like some of the (perfectly legitimate) connotations which reflect poorly on the self elected ‘ greatest nation on earth’ and used it to beat your anti-immigrant drum.
You may enjoy the book yourself, TB.
Return of a King, by Dalrymple. Concerns the British empire, east India trading company, Tsarist Russia, various volatile factions within Afghanistan & surrounds & (another arrogant, naive) failed attempt at militarily imposing colonial will upon people who are never easily subjugated.

Seriously Kneel get a fucking life idiot preferably in 2016 not 1955 FFS. Lone survivor is a great film and I agree good to see Bana back in the big league again. Bloody shocking and a fantastic story, just a tad Hollywood…nobody passes out from lack of blood 🙄 I think jackson has another film before he looks at dambusters (he has built 10 lancasters and is acquiring actual German anti aircraft guns). Word is they are shooting in 2015 for a 2016 release. I can’t see Morrison lasting , he’s just so embarrassingly incompetent.
Spartan is caught up in all that Hollywood good old US of A saving the world shit. You know the kind? wher Haliburton, GE, Phiser and the rest of those immoral bastards send eons and daughter to war do die for greed, in the name of freedom..Yeah fine, if the US are so hell bent on freedom, why the fuck didn’t they bomb the 50 tons of smack sitting on pallets in southern Afghanistan?, the carpet bombs seemed to have missed the CIA currency pile. Fuck America is full of shit, they are so fucking ignorant that the world knows exactly what they are up too… Yeah built a few hospitals and saved them all from the bad guys….Septic freedom, 3 feet thick and full of shit 🙄
Prediction Invasion of Japan by a coalition of international forces under the UN led by the US is imminent. This is potentially one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of mankind.Whats Asbestos Julie doing? signing a trade agreement, fucking clinically insane this lot are.
“ (perfectly legitimate) connotations”
It was simply a dumb post, neither quantified nor qualified… You rambled off a bunch of bumper sticker nonsense. I suppose when you have served something greater than “your keyboard” you will understand why guys like me get a little annoyed about insulated blather mouths spouting off ignorant crap…
“beat your anti-immigrant drum”
Listen “small brain”; the concept of “national sovereignty” is clearly lost on you. Unlike Australia, illegal immigration is bleeding my country, killing our citizens and undermining the very fabric of what has bound our people historically. To point this out is to be called “anti-immigrant or racist” by those lacking foresight or a historical context. Citizenship is more than simply “showing up”. Promoting more, more, more is to fill the coffers of a dying religion, provide modern slave labor for big biz and a solid, welfare dependent voting base to the left…Political elites play football with this topic and you’re their “tight end”. Like some lemming to the slaughter miming one side of the isle with no “long term” vision, wrapped in nonsensical, feel good rhetoric…Take your ball and go home little man…
“Spartan is caught up in all that Hollywood good old US of A”
Another “lost boy” riding in Cinderella’s carriage; don’t get your feet wet. Shut up and do something! I am sorry but if you feel the US of A is the problem in the world you are seriously delusional. What then is your solution? I have debated countless buffoons such as you and none seem to be able to form a coherent argument for anything? They just bitch and complain about how the world is falling apart.
It is very simply “boy who didn’t want to grow up” there are those who sit on their ass and whine, like you and feel they are making a difference. Then there are those who put it all on the line to go and try to make it happen…The world would be nowhere without such people who take on the real risks, your type could disappear from the planet and nobody would notice. You sit and wait for the world to change on hope and feel good back slapping.
“why the fuck didn’t they bomb the 50 tons of smack sitting on pallets in southern Afghanistan”
That proves what in your universe? I fail to see how you have done anything with your post but highlight your gross imbecility…I tend to ignore such a blatherskite but your profound doltishness was just too much to resist…We can throw more insults at each other or you can try to make a rational case for your discombobulated position? Any moron can bash the US, whole websites are devoted to it (Bush lied, people died blah, blah, blah).
How careless SoP. ‘People died blah, blah, blah’ .
And so they did and do.
But that is for The Other.
We treat ourselves with care. Off to the dentist regularly. Health checks. Nutrition awareness. Guilt over eating too much sugar.
And yet ….
We rally behind those beating wardrums whenever they sound.
And
People die.
Blah blah, blah.
‘About 100,000 overseas immigrants move to Queensland each year and the state’s population is predicted to rise from 4.5 million to eight million in 30 years.
‘Under the Queensland Plan, the Government wants 50 per cent of the population to live outside the southeast corner by 2034, meaning the regions would have to cater for another 2.3 million people.
‘Mr Newman said the Government would “positively discriminate” its infrastructure priorities in regional Queensland to compliment this growth which could prove cheaper in the long-term.
“If we have got to retrofit (southeast Queensland) it is really expensive,” he said.

‘The Australian Industry Group wants the Government to increase the immigration intake from 190,000 this financial year to 220,000 in 2014-15, with a particular focus on skilled migrants.’

… failed attempt at militarily imposing colonial will upon people who are never easily subjugated.
Yeas, Toillette, I’ve read a bit of history and Afghanistan … it reminds me of the long “invasion” history of Vietnam …
Oh Sparta, that bitter truth pill is a bitch to hoke on mate. Believe it or not there are some of us who don’t believe the US dream, we prefer to be profoundly awake. The republicans and the wall street mafia are possibly the most evil immoral hypocrites on the planet. Trading in Smack for arms with Arabs and Communists with money from the Poppy fields of Afghanistan, whilst claiming to fight a moral war on drugs and the red peril… But then again you tend to ignore such truths because in my universe I love the US but I don’t believe anything that comes from cocacolinisation masquerading as democracy, only a moron would “mission accomplished ” was it? Lost ?
TB, Toilet.. its just like Vietnam, unwinable and a case of who’s up who? They did bomb lots of caves though, spent a big chunk of that GE, Haliburton, McDonald Douglas deference budget handout. The Ruskies just cut and run with their tales between their legs. Thank our stars that the US saved us from communism by winning Vietnam 🙄
RP, its way past time someone decided to make a film about, The Battle of Long Tan, too! We certainly have the talent … ie Bana and that Kiwi bloke that wants to an Aussie … if we have to have a female lead avoid Nicole like the plague!
(BTW, Peter Frampton was a client of mine -thinking of blood and gore – I wrote his Diploma of Cinemagraphic Make-up and and policies and procedures to set his academy up)
Is this a record?
The Age has this statement – ”Bill Shorten brands Abbott a ‘oncer’ Prime Minister” 3 times on its web page, including as its top story. Shorten is probably correct, but is the comment so very momentous that it deserves repeating (and repeating)?
Perhaps it’s just that Shorten has so little to say, that it’s worth reporting when he happens to open his mouth.
“bitter truth pill”
LMAO….Which is what? Like I said bumper sticker ideology….Vietnam? I love left-wingers, “same nut, same crack”…Many are borderline schizophrenic; “loose associations” and “flight of ideas”…With my brief experience on the psyche ward many patients expressed themselves in a similar fashion but were at least interesting…Your much more boring…I thought for sure you would go a few more rounds before bringing up Wall Street and the “corporations”…Brother…Go protest something or give a few bucks to some group already, closest you’ll ever get to doing something for another in any real fashion…
Shorten is probably correct, but is the comment so very momentous that it deserves repeating (and repeating)?
Are you serious? Playing the Libs at their own repititious game … liar, liar comes to mind … short memory ToM …
Throw stones – expect some back … 🙄
The new Labor spin doctors thought a bit of repetition wouldn’t do any harm, with the intention of sowing seeds in people’s minds. Make it part of the news cycle, but opinion without substance has little value and the electorate is not stupid.
They would like to portray him as a visionary.
Yeah Yeah Sparta..I’m Mad Vietnam, Iraq, Grenada, Afghanistan, Korea were so successful. 🙄 Haliburton and GE are the saviors of the US and Wall street are all martyrs for their country, true national hero’s looking out for the little guy who can be the next tycoon from their garage. Its the old uncle sam predictable unicycle, have a war, spend obscene amounts of money with entrenched companies from the defence budget that saves the world from the free market.. defending..cough splutter “freedom” sucking other countries into their vortex of greed. This TPP that they want Australia to sign has US corporations all over it, fuck off like your corrupt political process, we don’t want it. Sparta believe what you like, your a zombified patriotic patriotic parrot paralyzed from object thought by propaganda.
Bill Shortman is a seat warmer
TB, Kriv Stenders (Red Dog) has a film called “Danger Close” in the can about the battle of Long Tan set for release in 2015.
TB: Here is the film to make. This would be a cracker, But you know Sparta would just denounce it as just fairytale leftist plot.

Ain’t that the truth … we already have a TA but try buying anything tech from Amazon (and other US companies) …
“Danger Close”? I hope that’s a working title? It’s a battle … call it a fkn battle … or just Long Tan …
… I like two word titles I must admit … finally finished a short vid for my son and mates on a 2009, Fraser Is trip … I don’t fish so he asked me to bring my cameras along … so I wouldn’t sit and drink all the supplies 😉 … called it “The Amazing Place” … two guesses what I used for the opening titles theme … tight edit on the beat of photos and names of the players … 🙂
RP, The Dismissal … deserves a mini series … Kerr was too weak (kneed and minded) – and being on the piss most of the time didn’t help! – to do what he did without serious backing from both the Whitehouse and Whitehall … or The Firm, a far more manipulative and insidious bunch than people realise.
I remember coming home from work (I was discharged from the Army late in 1971) and just standing in front of the TV with my mouth open in disbelief! (A similar feeling to watching 9/11 unfold …
Yeah I suspect that the Title was taken, it does suck actually. Kriv will do a great Job i’m sure.
How about we get Amazon, google and those American freeloading cartel fuckers to actually pay Tax for a start..fucking pricks instead of going through Ireland and the Cook islands. How about this proviso that American corporations can sue the government for changes in decisions that will affect their business?

Love Fraser island, nice part of the world. What Camera’s are you using? Wou;d be and awesome place to shoot actually.
Nothing special just a Sony full HD – got nicked when we burgled … replaced with another simple but effective Sony CX700VE … I’ve still got 2011 to do and they’re planning another trip this June …
I just bought a new still camera and an acquaintance bought the same model – “’cause TB’s photos look better than mine” – didn’t have the heart to tell her its not really the camera …
I must say Amazing Place (I used the theme to Amazing Race BTW – nice solid beat and cuts well) was very well received by the
cynicscritics … all ex diggers bar one …Good evening.

I’m also planning to record it on my iPhone but I’m not sure what the sound quality will be like.

In Breaking News – The Jewellery Debacle has become even more humourous … APIA has paid up and the money is in our bank account …
… however …
… this morning just after 9:00 “Funny Time” (8:00 Real Time) we were informed via the FOS, via Suncorp, that the APIA Claims folk in Brissy would be in touch with us “shortly”, to arrange how we deliver the jewellery, not to the city, but to a local Suncorp branch … a good idea but … we are still waiting …
… now we have the dough maybe they can just come and pick it up from here … 🙂
‘Speaking of which, Fairfax last week uncovered an authentic child-overboard case while interviewing “would-be refugees” from Pakistan and Bangladesh. According to Pakistani Fazal Qadir, a 20-month-old toddler was among passengers on a boat deliberately sunk in order to provoke an Australian navy rescue. “We were happy because we thought when the boat went into the water, then they must receive us,” Qadir told Fairfax.
‘This amounts to blackmail. Fairfax’s report continued: “All of the people on board knew of other vessels which had been returned to Indonesia, so were determined to be rescued rather than escorted back.
‘One passenger took a piece of wood and prised open the hole already in the hull. Others rocked the boat. When it foundered, two Australian speedboats reached them and the 12 navy personnel on board told the asylum seekers to cling to the side. The toddler was provided with a life jacket.”

Hahahahah! Little boy playing “cyber warrior” in sandbox picks a fight, then runs away…No problem “Ricky persnickety”, you have clearly exhausted your foreign policy repertoire. All teeth, no brains…Drive by commentary, repeated over and over a worldview does not make… “Ricky waits for applause; seeks validation”…LOL
Wonder why I have tremendous respect for the common soldier, Digger or US Marine and what they have tried to do? Least most know what they are for and why; put it all on the line for strangers but then there is “Ricky”. Any idiot can pay lip service to whatever cause as exemplified by this “keyboard hero”… “Ricky the Gnat” like many in the “West” have not really been taught how to “think” for themselves, so outside of what you can get on any MSNBC or FOX News program there is simply not much else there….What’s a matter Ricky, they don’t teach you “how to finish what you start”?
“F-off”? LOL….Your wisdom has been astounding…Bed-d-bye…Story-time…Hahahaha
‘THE nation’s welfare system is “unsustainable” and large, urgent changes must be made to the disability pension and the general unemployment benefit, Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews has warned. A 10-year report by the Department of Human Services shows that more than five million Australians received an income support payment in June 2012 – more than one in five Australians – with Disability Support Pension recipients hitting 827,000, while 550,000 people were on Newstart Allowance.’

Hey Sparta you fucking intellectual pygmy, Firstly I don’t pick fights with idiots and girls with their panties in a twist. Where did I say I have no respect for people in the military, soldiers or anything like that? You’re the one throwing all the aspersions and assumptions around you septic dipstick. Finish what I start? You haven’t said anything, its all piss and wind like Kneel. You been drinking that Fukushima rain falling on the US? “Where did I say I have no respect for people in the military, soldiers or anything like that?”
Hey genius, when you make suggestions that “the war” was all about oil, corporations blah, blah, blah or whatever bumper sticker you want to profess premised by a “fuck”, a testament of your intellect, you’re saying that soldiers died for such…You cannot be “for the soldier” while shitting on what their fighting and dying for; this is clearly lost in the “large space between ears”. If you have an honest critique of policy, try articulating it for a change (preferably without a “fuck”).
“You haven’t said anything”
In some ways your right, I simply baited another whack-job, frothing lefty into spitting nonsensical rubbish for the sake of his ego; qualified indeed…LOL
A Magic Martian Rock? (it just appeared … doo do doo do doo do do ….)
Hey genius, when you make suggestions that “the war” was all about oil, corporations blah, blah, blah or whatever bumper sticker you want to profess premised by a “fuck”, a testament of your intellect, you’re saying that soldiers died for such…
That’s an intersting statement from an ex soldier?
Just what DO soldiers fight for? In your opinion …
Just what DO soldiers fight for? In your opinion …
Soldiers are a mixed bag for sure; there is no simple answer to your question TB…However, in a voluntary force, most understand that part of the job is to go where ordered despite any personal objections; a sacrifice in itself. Soldiers usually fight first for the guy next to them, their families and country. If the mission is complete folly, you won’t have the morale to sustain the fight…A soldier puts it all on the line for others, directly or indirectly. Something sorely missing in the average citizen…Less than 1% of the American people have served for example.
Ultimately, you have no country if you no longer have people willing to fight and die for it or its principles…Afghans and Iraqis will fail for example if they are not willing to do the same. Unfortunately, this is a real possibility…They all seem more interested in catching a plane to the US or a boat to Australia and many all seem to be more than happy to facilitate this.
Unfortunately as is the case in the states where the military has become an instrument of corporate greed… Nothing TB. Keep diggin Sparta, you should hit the truth somewhere north of Beijing. Capitalism enables the machination of war, Nationalism lures the gullible without question to the fold and Patriotism is the last line of defence that holds the dogs of war to account. Weapons of mass deception. A soldier’s job is to serve and fight, a patriots job is to ask why.
David Sedaris was hilarious, and even poignant sometimes and offensive otherwise. Just my kind of person.
Well answered, Sparta …
… soldiers, sailors and air personnel all fight for their mates, to stay alive to return to their family and then and only then for their country … in that order … and most have no time for politicians … pollies cheer them off and ignore their return (or non return) … and always have … they ignore poor treatment and injured personnel like the plague … you may have read about the way my son was treated after his accident …
However, RickyP’s, comments were not aimed at the military but the stupidity of the politicians and their supporters who put both US, Oz and any other coalition troops in harm’s way, just to make a buck … and there is plenty of evidence that that was the case in Iraq …
… US foreign diplomacy (to which we seem to be attached umbilically by a rubber band!) since before WWI to the present has been nothing but a naïve global disaster for which many innocent lives both military and civilian have been lost …
…. one thing rules US global diplomacy (what a quaintly misused word) ….
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
American greed and paranoia has cost this world dearly …
That’s good ToM, did he have a weather joke?
Well I am sorry you feel that way TB…I simply think you are misguided and do a disservice to yourself when you make this discussion as simplistic as you have. Here is an excerpt from an opposing book review; two authors who share your view.
“One possibility is ideology or mental “frames.” A particular frame or belief may lead people to dismiss America’s benevolent actions, exaggerate her bad ones while minimizing the sins of others, interpret benevolent U.S. actions as sins, or even view U.S. inaction as a crime. But it’s crucial to realize that if it’s ideology that is mediating people’s perceptions of American behavior, then changing U.S. behavior may have little or no effect on the world supply of anti-Americanism.
* * *
There’s one final point to be considered. The two books under review take anti-American rhetoric at face value and treat it as sincere, while ignoring the fact that many of the people who decry America in speech don’t do so in deed. In short, a lot of anti-Americanism may be just cheap talk. The authors provide an example. They report that “three in five Europeans surveyed in 2004 agreed that ‘Europe must acquire more military power to be able to protect its interests separately from the United States.'” But then: “Even though most Europeans balked at increasing defense spending to become more powerful militarily.” This is the very definition of cheap talk.”
“In the same way, many Europeans regularly tell pollsters that they perceive the United States as a major threat to world peace—fully comparable to Iran, say. But in their defense planning, Europeans worry infinitely less about America’s sizable, existing nuclear arsenal than they do about Iran’s gathering one or al-Qaeda’s hypothetical one. It’s almost as if they know that, despite their hyperbole, Washington has no aggressive designs on them. Or consider that the residents of Belgrade in 1999, and those of Baghdad in 2003, walked the streets during NATO and Coalition bombing campaigns. It’s almost as if, despite heated rhetoric about indiscriminate violence and genocide, they knew full well that Western governments go to extraordinary lengths to protect civilians. Sunni Arabs who decry U.S. perfidy and abusiveness simultaneously fear that American troops will leave Iraq precipitously, exposing them to the tender mercies of their Shia and Kurdish countrymen. It’s almost as if they detect in American troops a civilized restraint. The U.S. now hosts well over 34 million foreign-born residents and the waiting-lists for entry are long. It’s almost as if, despite all the complaints of discrimination, people around the world detect opportunity and hospitality here.”
“Sometimes actions speak louder than words—or at least they should. Anti-Americanism is one such instance. If we observe how the world actually behaves toward the United States, rather than what they say about us, it would appear that people see America for what it really is—not a perfect society, to be sure, but most certainly a humane and decent one. Americans continue to have the sense that their country is unusual among the nations of the world. There is extensive evidence that others, too, perceive it as exceptional and act accordingly.”
So in terms of this post, were wrong to go into Afghanistan/Iraq but we should allow more Afghani refugees/economic migrants in as a result. Hmm…How does that logic work exactly? You’re ultimately saying both Afghanistan/Iraq were better places to live before we went in no? Life under the Taliban and Saddam was better or just tolerable? Ok, if you’re not saying that than what are you saying? Is your worldview that we should allow people to languish and suffer as long as there is not an American involved but once there is we have an obligation to relieve that suffering till the end of time? I don’t understand your thinking here?
What I have observed is that many on the “left” are great at providing lip service and “cheap talk” but as the author suggests, do very little in terms of action. Such people had nothing to say about Iraq or Afghanistan prior to the US being involved yet thousands upon thousands suffered and died under both; hardly a news story then, hardly a concern about the “children” then? Thousands suffered in silence but now that the “cat is out of the bag”, US is there, this suffering is worth “doing something for” aka bring as many to our shores as possible? That very noble; sounds like a great long term strategy for changing the world. About as effective is “talking about” it at the UN has been.
I don’t understand, if you were ok with people dying under Islamic radicals prior to the West’s involvement, the same people doing most of the killing now, it’s a problem now? I get the impression many like yourself are pissed that we simply made it everybody’s problem to “do something” versus just paying lip service.
I understand that it is a grandiose idea to try and “change” culture as we have but the reality is it is a process that has gone on for thousands of years. Did the Roman’s not advance British Culture from one of warring Celtic Tribes to a nation that gave birth to both of our great nations for example? Are we not dealing with Islamic Radicals throughout the world because some lunatic swept over the region with sword in hand beheading those who didn’t get in line?
What I get from your post and the likes of “the boy who didn’t want to grow up” is a profound misunderstanding of history and what it is to be human. If you’re only looking at the last 120 years minus any other context you a) will never understand the US and b) never understand mankind. Just my two cents….
Has Indonesia now become the Goodies, and we the Baddies?
As the Indonesian Military (TNI) begins to perceive the growing threat from other nations, it is accelerating efforts to strengthen deterrence by overhauling its structure to allow for faster troop deployment, expanding the Marine Corps and procuring long-range offensive weaponry.
…………
“The greatest threat will obviously be from Australia,” she said.

A Defense Ministry official has warned that Australia’s “tow-back” policy may soon ignite conflict.
……..
“Now that we have three frigates on the border, a clash could be imminent as our Navy will prevent the towing back,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.
If only we could have foreseen this kind of outcome………………………….

“Meanwhile in Nauru”
It is amazing now that Abbott is in power all the lefties now come out. Most Greens/ALP supporters were very quite while Labor was locking up record numbers of people in detention.
Now after handing an enormous problem to Abbott, Greens/Labor people want the problem solved immediately.
I have always suspected that Greens supporters use refugees for political purposes.
Your amoeba-like reactions leave no room for discussion Neil.
“What I get from your post and the likes of “the boy who didn’t want to grow up” is a profound misunderstanding of history and what it is to be human. If you’re only looking at the last 120 years minus any other context you a) will never understand the US and b) never understand mankind.”
You’ve nailed it, Sparta. Although, sadly, your words are probably wasted here. The defining characteristics of the leftist mind are resentment, utopian ignorance and arrogance.
The first is a deep-seated, churlish, resentful loathing for the culture that gives them greater freedom of thought and action and material well-being than has ever existed. They are permanently stuck in the developmental phase of a spoiled teenager who believes its parents know nothing about the world and are responsible for all of its ills.
The second characteristic, utopian ignorance, underlies their every utterance. A quick look at history discloses that societies only exist when they are capable of defending themselves. No Leviathan – no society. Barabrians are forever lurking in the shadows looking for any sign of weakness, any opportunity to impose their will on the rest of us. The genius of democracy is to make the Leviathan more accountable to the people. This is all fine and well for so long as the people understand the basics, the most important of which is that to exist, a society has to be able to defend itself.
Europe has out-sourced that role to the US and, at the same time, despised the US for making the world safer for them. In the meantime they have used the wealth which they would otherwise have spent defending themselves on all manner welfare programs and frivolous government expenditure, smugly believing that they are somehow morally superior for this.
Were it not for the US, Western Europe would now be what Eastern Europe became after WWII. And the leftist academics would have cheered them on from the relative comfort of their government sinecures and party dachas. These suppurating scum spent most of the cold war bashing the US and carrying water for the likes of Pol Pot – Noam Chomsky take a bow!
The third characteristic, the narcissistic arrogance of the overweening teen, is reflected in every spiteful comment that spews from the shit-eating mouths of modern leftists. When communism went down with the Berlin wall there was no admission that the hard left had got it wrong. They just re-branded themselves as Greens or “progressives”. They still somehow believe that the rules of history do not apply, that the US must be brought down and that the world will be a better place if it is. These people are living in some fantasy land where the normal rules of human nature do not apply. If the US becomes internationally irrelevant the next Leviathan will be no improvement. Apparently that thought has never entered their star-crossed minds.
A current example of this vacuous stupidity is the attitude of the left to asylum seekers. In 2007 there was no asylum-seeker problem. No one was drowning, no one was in detention and there was no need to change the system. But this did not satisfy the left. Instead, in an act of pure hubris, they changed the system, killed over a thousand people in the process and now claim the moral high-ground. How does that even work? The less boats that come, the more shrill the leftist response. They cry out for Indonesia to send more boats, presumably happy enough for the inevitable drownings that will follow. And that position is at the vain gutless heart of these child-activists – they are quite happy to see dead bodies floating in the ocean as the price of their political vindication.
None of this to say that the US is perfect, just that in terms of being a global hegemon the US is about as good a Leviathon as we could wish for, better than the alternatives and infinitely better than not having one at all.
Nicely strung together and correct.
Sometimes the policeman can make mistakes, like when they gave the Afghans sophisticated weapons to defend themselves against the Russian invasion. It could be argued that the War on Terror may never have come about if the yanks had kept out of Afghanistan in the first instance.
Back to the insults so that those of us with a skerrick of an idea, knowledge or experience will simply say why would I bother replying (to a mini-series)
… insinuate that anyone who disagree with you is a “spoiled teenager” and may harbour “resentment, utopian ignorance and arrogance.”
Makes you sound rather as you describe others … I suppose you both think that fighting in other people’s civil wars is acceptable too …
… on a persoanl scale if a neighbour has a brawl withing the family I don’t load up a weapon and go and sort it out so one side becomes my “friend” that I can take advantage of … nor do I get involved with neighbours fighting when no-one is right or wrong … I may call the cops if it impinges on me and mine …
… the Yanks tend to shoot first and ask later … even though they will send in the dogs first to check it out eg Oz SAS …
Like any other
LeviathanEmpire the US rules by absolute power and corruption … in fact it is anathema to true democracy … and certainly does not free the plebs it enslaves them … I have a service number that’s not choice, freedom nor being better off … that’s ancient Roman Empire 101 …“Back to the insults so that those of us with a skerrick of an idea, knowledge or experience will simply say why would I bother replying (to a mini-series)”
You are as big on insults as anyone else here, TB. I think “skerrick” is correct in your case. All we get is stream-of-consciousness flecks of spittle rather than a coherent argument. If you can’t manage a mini-series, a set of logical propositions would be nice. That is all I tried to present. Perhaps anything longer than a trite catch-phrase is a bit much for you to take in?
“insinuate that anyone who disagree with you is a “spoiled teenager” “
I was a bit more specific than that. I didn’t think the comment applied to you. I certainly didn’t have you pegged as having a “deep-seated, churlish, resentful loathing” for Western civilisation or of having a reflexive anti-Americanism. But on the evidence of your last comment, I should probably re-think that.
“I may call the cops if it impinges on me and mine”
Now here is where your argument (such as it is) unravels – you in fact acknowledge the need for a Leviathan.
Leviathans are not benevolent or altruistic. The reason the Lord of the Manor keeps the peace on his estate is so that his workers will be more productive and instead of killing each other he can send them off to kill his rivals or to fight for the king to meet his feudal obligations. The thing about Leviathans is that even the worst of them are preferable to anarchy.
Clearly the US acts out of self-interest but the fact remains that in terms of being a global hegemon the US is about as good a Leviathon as we could wish for, better than the alternatives and infinitely better than not having one at all.
The juvenile imbeciles spend all of their bile on attacking the US without recognising the benefits it provides and without offering an alternative. If they succeed in crippling the US the world will be a much worse place to live in.
If they succeed in crippling the US the world will be a much worse place to live in.
What have the Romans ever done for US!
Chinese Emigration the Third Way
‘Migration for investment in overseas real estate markets has become a top choice for Chinese applicants, according to a report on China’s migration status released on Wednesday.
‘The Annual Report on Chinese International Migration 2014 shows that a growing number of Chinese investors are rushing to go abroad in order to buy properties and establish permanent residence in places like Europe and North America.’
China Daily
Splatterbottom,
You have articulated what I could not…Well said…
I will be the first to say, the US is far from perfect, indeed profoundly flawed on some level but the resentment you have laid forth highlights a deep pathology…
Human beings will always do what is in their best interest regardless of nationality, religion or context. I do not blame the “asylum seeker/economic refugee” for their ploy…If I was in their position I would do the same…However, in Medicine you are trained to cure the disease if you can and attend to the symptoms as needed. In this case, the disease is the cultures/institutions these people flee. You will never cure what ails the “developing world” with talk or by importing it piecemeal out of guilt (symptoms)…Their disease lies in their archaic culture, not their people…You must “treat” the culture and hence cure the disease to have any lasting long term relief…
TB,
You are a conflicted man…I simply do not understand your “politics” nor will I attempt to but if there is an inkling of reasoning left in you I hope you might try to understand the world from a historical context…Doing so might give you peace instead of looking to failed theories/reasoning and parlor tricks. The “Left” offer nothing but more of the same; tried, tested and repeatedly failed…The right, well who cares, I surely don’t…They are marginalized and obvious…Critical thinking knows neither side of the isle.
I simply do not understand your “politics” nor will I attempt to
and then
…Critical thinking knows neither side of the isle.
Ignorance IS bliss
Leviathans are not benevolent or altruistic. The reason the Lord of the Manor keeps the peace on his estate is so that his workers will be more productive and instead of killing each other he can send them off to kill his rivals or to fight for the king to meet his feudal obligations. The thing about Leviathans is that even the worst of them are preferable to anarchy.
Or true democracy? In 2014 the Queen of Australia or her representative can depose an elected government … why? Because The Firm makes a shitload of maoney being in control …
If you believe that the USA is so clever and good to its people then why are veterans living on the street? Even the Roman Republic gave uts soldiers land when they retired …
If the USA is rich and so powerful then why is New Orleans still not rebuilt … and what really did happen Detroit …
… and why do the Wall St tycoons still make multi millions while hard working mums and dads lost millions of dollars in savings AROUND THE WORLD …
I suggest both you and your Yankee offsider ( I know a bit about the Civil Wat too, so he’ll like being called that, chuckle) … read ToM Holland’s, “The Forge of Christendom: The End of Days & the Epic Rise of the West” … the Lords (read Baron’s) have not changed in centuries – use the weak, poor and needy to become needlessly rich … the “feudal system” you refer to originated in France …
… I lso suggest his “Rubicon: The Triumph & Tragedy of the Roman Republic” …
… then move forward to The Great War and Gallipoli – Les Carlyon, First Victory – Mike Carlton … ;and then
Inferno and Winston’s War Churchill 1940 – 45, by Max Hastings …
Paul Ham will give you Kokoda and Vietnam:Australia’s War …
Iraq, Afghanistan I get either first hand from those who served there or the excellent TV series by Ross Kemp … the peace-keeping theatres of East Timaor and Bougainville I have first hand from a family member …
And East Timor had its gas reserves pirated by its “benefactor” … something that any Australian should be ashamed of.
I can assure you Sparta, I am not a “conflicted man” … from a working class family who worked in the woolen mills of Yorkshire to a proud Australian I can tell you I’ve seen the difference and had the shit thrown my way for much of my life time … it really is time for some fairness in the world – not give by the poor to feed the rich shit – I know what trickles down … as a small business operator my taxes were not only higher than other “eraners” but I had to predict and pay my taxes a year in advance … woe betide a bad year … my taxes on personal super were higher too … BUT I was my own boss … and Canberra doesn’t like us having freedom …
Anyone who believes that our troops are fighting to save democracy, the market economy, the American way or Christianity for all, has his/her head either in too many books or in a very dark, wet place …
We are NOT all born equal … another stupid myth …
(Something in aid of differential diagnostics, pathologising otherwise, and somewhat unapologetic in its prognostic utility for sundry matters on the interwebbies….
“[If] the same objects affect men differently owing to the differences in the men, then, on this ground also, we shall reasonably be led to suspension of judgment. For while we are, no doubt, able to state what each of the underlying objects appears to be, relatively to each difference, we are incapable of explaining what it is in reality. For we shall have to believe either all men or some. But if we believe all, we shall be attempting the impossible and accepting contradictories; and if some, let us be told whose opinions we are to endorse. For the Platonist will say “Plato’s”, the Epicurean, “Epicurus’s” — and so on with the rest; and thus by their unsettled disputations they will bring us round again to a state of suspense. Moreover, he who maintains that we ought to assent to the majority is making a childish proposal, since no one is able to visit the whole of mankind and determine what pleases the majority of them — for there may possibly be races of whom we know nothing amongst whom conditions rare with us are common, and conditions common with us rare, — possibly, for instance, most of them feel no pain from the bites of spiders, though a few on rare occasions feel such pain; and so likewise with the rest of the “idiosyncrasies” mentioned above. Necessarily, therefore, the differences in men afford a further reason for bringing in suspension of judgment.
When the Dogmatists — a self-loving class of men — assert that in judging things they ought to prefer themselves to other people, we know that their claim is absurd; for they themselves are a party to the controversy; and if, when judging appearances, they have already given the preference to themselves, then, by thus entrusting themselves with the judgment, they are begging the question before the judgment is begun.”
…perhaps.)
“Anyone who believes that our troops are fighting to save democracy, the market economy, the American way or Christianity for all, has his/her head either in too many books or in a very dark, wet place …”
Well as human beings we are all shaped by our experiences TB…I am a man from very humble beginnings where neither parent had any education outside of a high school degree, divorced when I was young, who then started working when he was 15, joined the military at 17, returned from abroad, put himself through college (only via help from my government) while working full time and then on to a graduate education; I have seen what hard work can do for any person with a plan. I am sorry, but most people who are rich, the “robber barons” were not born that way, most had to work for it as well…
The old saying “I never met a “poor” man who gave me a job” kind of goes to the heart of it…Many of our greatest minds in the “West” came from nothing and succeeded. The point is, the West is one of the few places you can do this and it has nothing to do with “location”…Are there obstacles; of course…Do you have to work your butt off? Of course….We as a society have an obligation to care for those who cannot do so for themselves but no man or woman, who is healthy and able is “OWED” anything just because they exist. There are countless studies that have looked at the phenomenon of “poverty” as we define it here in the West; most point to 3 simple rules…
1) Do not have children before you are married
2) Get an education
3) Work
It’s cause and effect TB, as you know.
Another contradiction in your “world view” and very glaring given this blog post…You advocate for “more, more, more” in terms of refugees, or seem too (Only because you seem to feel the US is what’s driving these people, not their violent cultures). Now that you’re on about “poverty”, difficulty getting out and staying out of it, does it make much sense to import people from war torn, often savage cultures that are missing 2 of the 3 above? These people are likely to stay impoverished and in need of long term government aka tax payer assistance… People like yourself seem to forget that Government doesn’t create anything, make anything. They generate “revenue” through taxation, taking from their citizens (some justified others not). Tell me, do you feel there is an endless pie? Who do you think pays for the economic migrant? Where does the money come from when you have not the budget for “illegal” arrivals? Can you say less for Veterans, our vulnerable citizens etc? Money has to come from somewhere…
In terms of the US Veteran, we all Volunteered for SERVICE, we all understand what that means, the risks (WE SIGN A DAMN CONTRACT). It is why I have so much respect for soldiers vs. your average citizen, especially “keyboard warriors”. The reality is, we do fight for freedom and democracy, sometimes inadvertently but you cannot deny, in fact I challenge you to point out where either Afghanistan or Iraq ever had “choice” before?
News flash TB, every war makes millionaires…Would you say the Revolutionary War was folly? How about the Civil War; perhaps both world wars? Shall I go on? Vietnam, well that gets a bit more complicated; major blunders in that conflict starting with no “end game” and the draft. Forcing “keyboard warriors” to fight should be the last resort of any nation; reserved for unavoidable conflicts.
Conflicted, well perhaps that was not the right word but CONSISTANT you are not…Your worldview seems to have holes and contradictions throughout (which is to say you don’t seem to have anything but grievances)…All I get is “too many rich people” and “the US is the cause of all the grief in the world”. Marxist ideology; which is time tested failure; some never learn from their mistakes, like the poor. Most human beings always need somebody to blame for their bad decisions as well…Human nature….
More logic and less emotion goes a long way….
Thanks TB obviously the truth is not lost on you as a person who prefers to think for themselves.
It is patently obvious that Sparta has his own version of how the world works according to Murdoch and anyone who reminds his type of the inconvenient reality of life outside navel gazing Americans narrow divisionalist vision is Pink,Left, un patriotic, hates America, Como,Conspiracist, hates the military or free speech. American politicians start war for money and I consider that immoral, as does many others that don’t trust the motivation.
This is the SOB of Neocons proliferating new world order free market pontification in their endless greed encrusted self serving propaganda spreading like Fukashima fallout polluting morality and diluting truth. Capitalism has failed humanity just as communism has; both subscribe to a core of totalitarian repression.
Americans seem to think that there is nothing but the US model of democracy and the rest of the world just gaze at America in disbelief at their ignorant arrogance. Wise up Sparta divide and conquer is as transparent as Scott Morrisons christianity.
“Keyboard Warrior”
Instead of throwing the usual mundane stuff out there why don’t you pick an example of your “profound” view of the world and how it plays in your “universe”…You know; stand for something instead of simply against? All you do is whine and complain, rail against everything you clearly benefit from (they call this hypocritical; yes, that is you). I realize doing so means you might have to “think” a bit, put yourself out there but give it a try (not like putting on a uniform)…You don’t want to come across as another loon trying to “draw fire” for the sake of, then post something other than a “rant”…Really man, your world view is what then? I doubt you are even remotely complex as you likely think you are…Try me, I will bite… Least TB has something coherent to say….
I think a critical, articulate statement to any of your grievances would be a good start and refreshing for a change, unless this is the limit of your abilities…How about the one concerning the Asylum Seeker ordeal, you know the original topic here? Either put up or shut up already…It’s a blog, if you want to “debate” then do so…Stop looking for applause. This back and forth is getting BORING…..
I will happily engage your best argument so put your ego aside and let’s go for a spin. You have addressed nothing I have posted other than discount it, very skillful…Hello, “little Ricky”?
‘THE ABC has defended its editorial processes against a rising tide of criticism of its reports that Australian navy personnel beat and burned asylum-seekers during a tow-back operation earlier this month. This is despite strong assertions from the government and the Australian Defence Force that the claims are unfounded and another television network, Seven, treating the asylum-seekers’ allegations with much greater scepticism a fortnight earlier.’
Oz
Aunty also makes shit up about the weather too, they really are a fkn disgrace.
No boats in five weeks.
“We have our foot on the neck of the smugglers and we are not going to give them any relief,” Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said. “We are going to keep applying the pressure.”
Spot on, egg. The ABC has been taken over by a political cabal who should be jailed for misappropriation of public assets. These stupid, stupid leftists are stealing a billion dollars a year from the government to forward their cretinous agenda. The ABC should be sold off.
By the way, I have it on good authority that the navy is making asylum seekers walk the plank after being bent over and fucked by police dogs who then chomp on their genitalia. Please, please ABC run with this highly credible story. Broadcast it into Indonesia. It will help stop the boats.
Politicisation of this issue by the ALP and Liberals has been offensive to reasonable people.
It’s no use continually slating Abbott, unless you’re also willing to slate Gillard and Rudd. ALP barrackers have shown great reluctance to do the latter. I recall someone who has self-selected out of this site, continually offer their vociferous support to every policy u-turn by the previous government, yet still claimed to be an “asylum seeker advocate”. Bizarre.
There are a range of measures that governments could have used in advance of the strongly punitive. It really does remain repulsive to punish innocent people.
A couple of examples of options that I have proposed in the past-
• Use of public information in Indonesia about the lengthy incarceration of the crews
• Different forms of TPVs
Personally, I’m not as concerned about turning boats around as I am about just locking people up for years and years, and both parties just want to lock people up.
“both parties just want to lock people up.”
Why do I get the feeling that if the asylum seekers were white people they wouldn’t be behind bars.
Imagine the outrage in the press!! The headline and coverage-
“Or true democracy? In 2014 the Queen of Australia or her representative can depose an elected government … why? Because The Firm makes a shitload of money being in control …”
Stupidity on a stick! “True Democracy” is just a vague catch-phrase. The fact is our constitutional monarchy works better than if we had an elected president or whatever scheme is flitting through your head at the moment.
And don’t tell me what to read. I read widely. The difference between us is that I sift what I read, and use the worthwhile stuff to put propositions. I don’t try to shut down arguments by prescribing reading lists to my interlocutors. That is just lazy and arrogant. As is this style of wankery: ….. robber barons … fkn robber barons … yet more fkn robber barons .. live in a society™ … Mike Carlton …
In case you missed it, my point isn’t that America is a wonderful place, a veritable nirvana. It is that America is as good as we can hope for in a superpower. I don’t know what alternative you are proposing, but a meaningless slogan like “true democracy” is not an answer. That is just a piece of slimy shit on the page reflecting a desire to take a position without the ability to make a coherent argument.

“When the Dogmatists — a self-loving class of men — assert that in judging things they ought to prefer themselves to other people, we know that their claim is absurd; for they themselves are a party to the controversy; and if, when judging appearances, they have already given the preference to themselves, then, by thus entrusting themselves with the judgment, they are begging the question before the judgment is begun.”
An interesting proposition, Meta. But why should I accept that dogmatic judgment?
“Why do I get the feeling that if the asylum seekers were white people they wouldn’t be behind bars.”
Oh come on Reb, you can do better than the “race card”…You do remember how the Irish were treated, do you not? Last time I checked they were quite pasty…
‘The ABC should be sold off.’
It won’t happen on Tony’s watch, but they’d be wise to purge the news department of leftists before its too late.

All I get is “too many rich people” and “the US is the cause of all the grief in the world”. Marxist ideology; which is time tested failure; some never learn from their mistakes, like the poor. Most human beings always need somebody to blame for their bad decisions as well…Human nature….
Sparta, there are too many selfish Uber rich people and too many Uber poor people … as I recently said to a grandchild … there are millions of children in the world who have never heard of ice cream let alone tasted it …
The USofA IS the cause of grief around much of the world … it invades countries based upon lies …
And for the last fkn time I am not a Marxist a communist nor a socialist I am an Australian who thrives in a capitalist/welfare society but abhors Uber Kapitalism and Uber welfare …
… the world is full of extremes … my argument is that it should be fairer … as for your “some never learn from their mistakes, like the poor” … that explains in a nutshell the difference in thought processes between you, sb and me … my career was spent helping people to improve their lot in life (I do it now) … I firmly believe there are many people who are worse off than me, smarter than me, lazier, more motivated, have better/worse luck than me … the list goes on … but many who are worse off have not had to intellectual capacity to improve themeselves … they need assistance … the secret to advancing a nation is not money … it is knowledge …
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Stupidity on a stick! “True Democracy” is just a vague catch-phrase. The fact is our constitutional monarchy works better than if we had an elected president or whatever scheme is flitting through your head at the moment.
What a clever argument … “the fact is” … what “fact”? … would the USofA work better with a monarchy?
Great tempter too … Stupidity on a stick” …very graphic use of what was it “wankery” …
The USA is the land of extreme debauchery being exported to every other Western country and some not in the west – similar to Sodom & Gomorrah perhaps? “And that’s the best we’ve got?” I hope not …
That is just a piece of slimy shit on the page reflecting a desire to take a position without the ability to make a coherent argument.
Love the use of adjectival phrasing … probably works on teenagers too … you don’t really think I believe in absolutes and anything like “true democracy” or “absolute communism” do you? … you could find examples of good democracy quite easily … try the Scandinavian countries for a start … and yes some do have a monarch … why?
And speaking of monarchs … I object to someone lording it over me and mine just because they were “born” to … “right of kings” my arse …
BTW … if you removed all the rhetorical, graphic insults it would make your comments much easier to read and definitely easier to figure if you’re actually saying anything … or just ranting at me …
Just sayin’ .. 🙂
“… as for your “some never learn from their mistakes, like the poor” … that explains in a nutshell the difference in thought processes between you, sb and me … “
I didn’t say that.
“… the world is full of extremes … my argument is that it should be fairer”
That statement has no meaning, other than that you think pious platitudes pass for logic. Everybody thinks the world should fairer. Commos think the world would be fairer under a communist dictatorship. Jihadists think the world would be fairer under a caliphate. Noddy Newman thinks the world is fairer when he is in control. Anarchists think the world would be fairer if there was no government at all.
To even get to a point where we can debate what is fair, to even have a country at all, we need to be able to defend ourselves. We can’t do that alone. We need a Leviathan to provide some protection.
“The USA is the land of extreme debauchery being exported to every other Western country and some not in the west – similar to Sodom & Gomorrah perhaps? “And that’s the best we’ve got?” I hope not …
That is completely irrelevant (and a little overwrought). The point is that in terms of being a global hegemon, the US is about as good as it gets. In particular the US is largely responsible for limiting the spread of communist tyranny and for the long peace since WWII. If you think things would be better if China or Russia or Iran was the global hegemon you should say so, or at least say what you think would be preferable. And don’t give me that “true democracy” BS that you don’t even believe in.
“BTW … if you removed all the rhetorical, graphic insults”
Maybe I should stick to stuff like:
“Your ignorance is astounding!”
“Your screaming and confusion”
“astoundingly stupid hypocrisy”
It’s nearly that time again!
Gonna incinerate that gaudy ocker tablecloth & piss on it to extinguish its smouldering remnants.
Fuck making excuses for leviathan…

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-01-24/tony-abbott-incorrect-on-asylum-seekers-breaking-australian-law/5214802
“Fuck making excuses for leviathan…”
I used to think Hobbes was wrong about this, but I have changed my mind.
Take Somalia – when the government could no longer guarantee public order there was chaos. Various groups (mostly unsavoury) have formed to contest the role as the new Leviathan. Hobbes would argue that any Leviathan is better than none – that even people in areas controlled by al Shabaab are better off than under anarchy.
The question from Australia’s point of view is whether having the US as a global hegemon since WWII was better (or not) than any realistic alternative. Until the end of the cold war the answer is clear – we were better off than if the US was out of the picture. After then I can’t see a better alternative. The fading of US international power will not help Australia.
This is a completely different question to asking whether or not the US could have done things better. Clearly it could, but the fact is that it didn’t. The question still remains as to whether there are better realistic options.
Oh yeah, criticising Leviathan, and pointing out the self interest underneath the veneer of altruism which it frequently uses to prosecute its agenda, isn’t the same as “trying to bring it down”.
Nor is it tacit approval of other potential ‘superpowers’ (Iran? gmafb!) being ‘better’ alternatives.
Generally, the silence from the right, with regard to Leviathan overreaching, is deafening. Somebody has to point out the ugly unmentionables about even the least worst Leviathan, lest it thinks it isn’t answerable.
Leviathan tends to have unrepresentative influence in corners of the globe far removed from its own territory…upon peoples whom get no say, democratically or otherwise, in whether they become subjugants or not.
I readily concede that there probably aren’t better realistic options.
But criticism & scrutiny of Leviathan is a public service. Long may it thrive.
🙂
‘Leviathan ranks as a classic western work on statecraft comparable to Machiavelli’s The Prince. Written during the English Civil War (1642–1651), Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Hobbes wrote that civil war and the brute situation of a state of nature (“the war of all against all”) could only be avoided by strong undivided government.’

“Sparta, there are too many selfish Uber rich people and too many Uber poor people”
I agree TB but since the dawn of man this has always been the case. Even in our most primitive hunter gather days, the better hunter and his family ate better; ate first….I really do not understand your grievance here other than you take issue with human nature and try to subscribe a cause, the USA. I don’t know how else to make you understand that human beings are individuals and make decisions for themselves. EVERYBODY knows smoking is bad for you, still millions smoke! You seem to believe there is a force that propagates this stupidity…MOST of the rich are rich because they work their asses off and know how to make money, know the system…Are you pissed off that some people can play football or tennis better than the next and as such make millions doing it? Many athletes are not smart, many are not from rich families; they just have a skill set we are willing to pay for….
“The USofA IS the cause of grief around much of the world … it invades countriesbased upon lies”
I think you are just wrong here; there is a tremendous amount of evidence to support just how wrong you are. I would assume your referring to Iraq? Where else have we invaded where you can even make such an argument? In terms of Iraq, we went in for the oil right?
http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=MTTIMIZ1&f=M
I am not sure how you can make the claim man (oil imports from Iraq were HIGHER before the war)…If you want to say we lied than so did your Sovereign dude and many other countries are complicit (I have never thought GW that smart)…Just doesn’t hold water…Do you know who has been the biggest benefactor in terms of Iraqi Oil, CHINA….We had multiple interest in going into Iraq as we did Afghanistan (we didn’t just stay for one man)
“And for the last fkn time I am not a Marxist a communist nor a socialist”
Fair enough TB but your rhetoric unfortunately has more in common with that of said ideologies then somebody who has thrived and benefited from that which you lambaste regularly…I sense an underlying guilt that can only be relieved by trying to point out perceived injustices (GUILT underlies most who lean left only to be remedied by pointing fingers and taking from others).
“that explains in a nutshell the difference in thought processes between you, sb and me”
Well I must say you are again wrong dude…My life for example has been all about helping those who “really” need it, to this day, my resume is evidence of that but I am not about to toot my own horn. The difference between you and I is you seem to think setting any type of “conditions” to this “charity” is tantamount to “cruel”? You seem to think that charity does not cost a thing? Would you hand over your debit card or open your fridge to the point where your family no longer had a roof over their head or something to eat? Seems your charity like many who share your worldview is for “somebody” else to pay for.
In terms of “everywhere” else, look at bad policy, lack of freedoms aka CULTURE….Where ever you have a bad situation I can promise you there is dysfunctional culture and the US has little to do with it (it was bad long before we got involved). Seems everybody needs somebody to blame for their own shortcomings.
“the secret to advancing a nation is not money … it is knowledge”
Again, I agree with you in one sense but in regards to this post, how does importing poor, uneducated peoples from around world a better long term policy vs. exporting knowledge, getting in there and trying to fix the source (Afganistan, Iraq, Nazi German, Imperial Japan, Fascist Italy, dysfunction Timor)? You call this “invasion” but then, the answer in your view is to just sit and wait for it to arrive on a boat while those BILLIONS still stuck in the morass languish? Such a policy does not make you more altruistic, a better human being. I find it amazing that Western nations are puzzled that poverty is still high at home when we import it in the numbers we do…Why are we not making gains here…Hmmmmm…..Why is there not enough resources to care for our own citizens who need it…Hmmmmm…..Again, the ship is sinking and we have only so much room on the lifeboat, you can keep pulling people out of the water and sink your lifeboat or “make the hard and difficult” decision to say, ENOUGH, I will save what I can…Until the source cultures get it together, nothing will ever change…The perfection you seek is an illusion and millions have died trying to create it…The “utopia” Splatter mentions…
Knowledge you say, well again are people still not smoking? Even knowledge has its limitations, left out of your assumption, the free will of human beings and their freedom to make BAD DECISIONS.
Sparta is perfectly rational.
I agree TB but since the dawn of man this has always been the case.
Then it needs to end …

This ones for Sparta
“You’re a glass half empty person …”
No, not at all….I simply see the world as it is; how it’s always been and doing so understand mankind for what he is and isn’t. The world makes a hell of a lot more sense from that perspective, trust me. We have hardly changed any in thousands of years, we have technologies that have made us more comfortable, discovered more about the world we live in but mankind has evolved very little. Remove Western Civilization from the globe (America, Australia, Canada, UK and Western Europe), what do you have left? Peace, love and happiness? Everything would be fine if not for us? Where is mankind then?
You dream and see the world the way you feel it should be; trying to understand it in the context of red wine, good food and friends; “functioning institutions”. That is not how most of the world lives, as you know. While there is something to be gained from both perspectives, I can honestly say mine has not left me chronically depressed or holding ill will towards anybody, especially a single nation. You need answers in trying to understand, to come to grips with mankind in my opinion; to accept mankind for what he is.
Leftwing dogma, a worldview you tend to parallel, does this by subscribing blame, they always have…It points fingers at a country, an economic system, people, groups, a unseen force or some event etc…Strangely, it always seems to blame successful anything? Envy, jealousy and of course GUILT are its mainstay…Paradoxically, it is the left who subscribe derisi0n for what they cannot understand, much like the “red neck”.
“Guilt is a cognitive or an emotional experience that occurs when a person realizes or believes—accurately or not—that he or she has compromised his or her own standards of conduct or has violated a moral standard, and bears significant responsibility for that violation.”
Guilt is how most on the left deal with the fact that they enjoy a quality of life unparalleled in human history, have absolutely no wants or real needs comparatively speaking. In order to alleviate said guilt they must have something they can point to and say “see, they are the problem” not me…But if they really believed that then why do most “sit on their ass” complaining but actually, physically doing nothing while the soldiers put it all on the line (most lean right and are conservative in this country)? How do you get instant gratification or relief from said guilt while really doing nothing? You shout “more refugees”, “feed the children”; of course it is somebody else who actually needs to take care of all that entails.
To be sure some Lefties get out there, but then they also tend to be the naïve who wonder how they got themselves captured and are now being held for ransom? You know, “I just came to feed the Somali children”; yes, but did you not hear, there is no law or order in Somalia, no functioning institutions and you were warned not to go by your government. It is only then do they “suddenly get” mankind…Sigh…
I have seriously digressed…My apologies. Trust me TB, I am a “half full” kind of guy and if I wasn’t I would not have thought the Iraqi and Afghan people were worth our blood and treasure, nor would our volunteer army… I understand, as do many others that parts of the world will never “EVOLVE” without a bit of help. “Treat the disease if you can; otherwise alleviate the symptoms”. You’re a treat the symptom type of guy that expects others to do the treating for you though. The disease is what kills; but you’re not even sure what the disease is though (America, right)! Perhaps our “surgical” intervention was a bit ambitious but the patient aka “CULTURE” is on life-support man….
Sparta is essentially correct in all he said
Here Ricky…You can have your adolescent rap…I give Mr. Ferguson….Try to watch and listen…You may learn something…
No Egg he is essentially Right, there is a difference. So anyone that questions the unbridled greed that proliferates war for profit, profit in the whole free market economy at any cost and the audacious audacity to wrap this up as freedom suffers from left wing dogma. Nice try but no Cuban Cigar. When people use the word evolve, I cant help but think of this cancer of inane sugar coated consumerism that perpetuates the American Dream sold by corporations as normal. In my travels and world experience I have been to many highly evolved cultures that don’t subscribe to the American view of democracy (quite frankly a farcical popularity contest of money over policy selling lies) This has crept into Australian politics, prevalent in his current bunch of lying incompetents. Everyone opposed to us and our lobbyists are socialists and that means communists and that is evil..FFS wake up.
Bill Oriel y defines his brand on this type of simplistic stupidity as does Andrew Bolt. Despite some complete sheep here agreeing with Sparta on some point (yes thats just general human nature). Unless you are Australian and live in Australia you will never understand the Australian perspective, which is a bit more world view due to the smaller population and concentration of multicultural ethnicity.
A Galah
I don’t have time to watch that but I will.. If America is such a great empire, Why do China own their ass..? If China called in the marker the American dollar would not be worth the paper its printed on.
‘The long-term jobless – those out of work longer than a year – will be paid up to $6000 to cover their relocation costs if they move to a regional area to take up a job.

Natasha Bita / The Daily Terror
“If China called in the marker the American dollar”
Very true Ricky…However, China is a nothing but a “paper dragon”…The minute the world gets tired of their toxic, cheap, low quality crap and stop buying it, they go bust (as is already starting to happen)…Most of their elite have longed known this hence why they invest in Western (Australia, US and Canadian) infrastructure…Honestly, to be enforced by whom or what?
Who ever said America is a “great” empire? We are a hybrid of sorts to be sure but hardly an empire in the classical sense…That is where many become confused…We take what from Iraq, Afghanistan? Germany, Japan, Italy etc…We have 2,500 Marines in Australia now, to what, take your Kola? Yes, we try to spread “western ways” but honestly, what is the alternative in those places we have gone? More of the same?
However, China is a nothing but a “paper dragon”…
Oh, dear … and where is your nearest China Town, I wonder … Tora! Tora! Tora! …
Paper ideas burn quickly …

egg,
Impressive, really impressive!
“to wrap this up as freedom suffers from left wing dogma.”
Not exactly what I was saying dude…However, to believe in your heart that there is a better way “if done your way” is very much “leftwing dogma”; to discount history for theory is very much a “leftwing” fallacy…What is this way, exactly?
“Everyone opposed to us and our lobbyists are socialists and that means communists and that is evil.”
No…But what you regularly espouse is very much of the “socialist” brand dude…It is typical of those who don’t want to understand man for what he is and think there is some winning recipe other than letting him thrive or fail through his own efforts. You seem to believe there is some “magical land” despite thousands of years to the contrary that exists; PERFECTION is the “false idol” you chase….
“Unless you are Australian and live in Australia you will never understand the Australian perspective, which is a bit more world view due to the smaller population and concentration of multicultural ethnicity.”
I see….Did you know that about 6.0% of our population is Asian descent for example, or over 19 million; almost your entire population? But you understand America chap? You know us, and who we are because of our TV, our news clips? Multicultural, sigh (there is no such thing as multicultural!!!!)…Ok, let’s be clear, Australia like Europe is just beginning to understand “multi-ethnic” on a scale we have known for some time, we have been doing it from our inception (no formal white policy here dude)…You will never find a more “multi-ethnic” culture than America, all 320 million of us and growing annually by a million (your entire population is less than California with much of it having been gained in the last 40 years)…We are much more than “New York or San Francisco”….. You claim this notion of “diverse” as your own as do many Europeans? Have you ever heard of E Pluribis Unum? Our coinage does not pay homage to a foreign sovereign… Europe like Australia emulates what we have been experimenting with since our inception and each is finding its own balance (you want to call it your “idea”, fine)…Your founding documents emulate our own Constitution so get your pomp in check. I have never claimed America is the “best” only not the “problem” in the world; far from it versus your “America is what is wrong” with the world; only for what you can’t understand. America is as flawed as the next, but far from some scourge.
Profit or whatever need you want to point to is “the human” condition dude; you seem to resent that America simply allows one to rise to their own incompetence…We all do what is in our best interest, to include you! Profit; socialist language anybody? Brother….Yes, profit is the problem with the world, not dysfunctional cultures…If only we were all happy with a bowel of rice, a thatch roof and cholera laden water we would “all get along”, oh yes and “a true god” to worship…Come on Ricky, it is a naïve way to view the world.
Yes TB, always a pleasure to see cheats punished.
Listen Sparta, write volumes..you’re a bloody septic and wouldn’t have a brass razoo about bein dink um and undercastumblin us bitza’s. obviously, we need a `mexican-proof` fence, 🙄
Ricky speaks noice strine, its a wonder Sparta can understand him.
Has anyone here tried using a smartphone without a SIM card? Or is willing to try it for me?
I want to buy a cheap Chinese one to use as a mini tablet controller connected to wifi (to operate my model railway – just hooked it up to computer software).
Any tech head info gratefully received …
So, in closing, USA is the undisputed top of the moral pile. Even when they’re wrong, they’re less wrong…even when they’re cynical, exploitative & opportunistic
in the name of ‘freedom’, whatever that is, they’ve bastardised the term to the point of coercive jargonthey’re less cynical, exploitative & opportunistic. So there…
You can’t argue against a people who are conditioned to see themselves as inherently ‘exceptional’.

The Japs were stretched out too far and to thin, with no reliable supply line, China-Reds had kicked the shit out of`em too. Japs couldn`t maintain their positions the full length of Asia and were doomed, attacking Pearl Harbor only hastened the Japs defeat.

Thanks for the “History Lesson” General RT.
Ever heard of the Battle of the Coral Sea……………………perhaps even Guadalcanal ?
We will never know if the Japanese intentions really were to invade the North but they certainly had their eyes fixed on PNG and the opportunity to completely interdict the Trans Pacific shipping lanes and greatly lengthen the conflict.
And that bit about the Red Chinese kicking Jap arse is also crap since they were not all Red since Chiang Kai Sheck’s army was also fighting the Japs. And they were hardly kincing any arse anyways.
The Japs were far more terified of the Soviet threat of invasions which occured when a certain couple of Bombs were dropped.
And I suppose it escapes you which Nation dropped them…………………..LOL
‘Prove it.’
The south east asian co-prosperity sphere was not a whim.
Also, Reb and TB would be speaking broken German in the old dart.
Communist China only evolved because of the Japanese invasion, while Chiang Kai Sheck was getting a hiding Mao got his chance.

Another Broken Abbott promise steeped in ideology. Coste efficiencies and specifically assets management of the ABC. This bunch of Right wing tea party ratbags are gonna have a punt at selling the ABC. Why would they do this? Is there a tide of public outrage over the ABC and SBS? Oh Look its in a Murdoch publication broadcast on a Murdoch station. Two words, “Predetermined Outcome” with a full Murdoch media assault hammering the subtext of the como biased ABC Lefties are wasting our public money and Rupert could do it better……
“biased ABC Lefties are
wastingstealing our public money”Interested to see what the Gruen team make of this ad. Its got everything – hot young bodies, soft porn – completely blown away:
This bunch of Right wing tea party ratbags are gonna have a punt at selling the ABC. Why would they do this?
So murdoch doesn’t have to compete, he can have it all.
If we don’t have ABC, what is left for some of us? I refuse to read the Murdoch papers, the outrage, misinformation and distortion is not good for my blood pressure. Opinion is not news.
I want a freely available, taxpayer funded news organisation, not just for myself but for those in australia [like poor pensioners] who don’t buy papers, and want news they can trust. Hearing about what is happening in the world and in Australia [news] should not be a commercial commodity, it should be a community service.
For those who want ‘marketed’ and biased ‘opinion’ pleasing to their ideology they can continue to pay for it [can’t be too many, as they run at a loss].
It’s bad enough that the ABC have been infected with the IPA shills/ideologues spruiking their free market non-values while trying to convince people that they’ve never had it so good even when their own lived experience is telling them the opposite. Then we have the murdoch journos demanding murdoch’s opinion be heard on the ABC, even though their owner has control of 80% of published media, it’s just not enough for them.
Some of us don’t want to hear from those people. We prefer to make up our own minds without getting the vested interests of the commercial media rammed down our throats. We know where they are and we know where to find them if interested.
No wonder the abbott won’t appear on the ABC for interviews, it’s too honest for the likes of him and he gets asked questions he doesn’t like, best to be on the safer ground of shock jock radio and the bolt report, no fear of scrutiny or being held to account there.
I’m quite sure that any [non rigged ToR] inquiry will show, as they always do, that the ABC is the most trusted source of news and current affairs to australians.
“If we don’t have ABC, what is left for some of us?”
Fairfax? Crikey? The Conversation? The Guardian? Arena? Green Left Weekly? Overland? New Matilda? You would be right at home at Socialist Alternative. You could even take the Communist Party’s advice, if you haven’t already done so, and donate to the Guardian’s press fund.
By the way I love that you acknowledge that the ABC is biased enough to satisfy the reading requirements of an ultra-leftist like yourself!
When exactly did the “Tea Party” which is devoid of any Australian history/context find its way into the Australian lexicon? I find it quit amusing….I am sure none here know, or have ever met the “scourge” they constantly site….Hilarious really…
Essential research: Trust in news sources
http://essentialvision.com.au/trust-in-news-sources
The most trusted news sources were ABC TV news (82%), ABC radio news (78%) and SBS TV news (78%).
The least trustworthy were internet blogs (57% seldom/no trust), newspapers (29%), commercial radio news (27%) and commercial TV news (26%).
“the ABC is the most trusted source of news and current affairs to australians.”
You mean trusted by leftists who want to bask in the in the eternal sunshine of their spotless minds and never have their ideological biases questioned.
Ignore the grammatical errors please…LOL; too much red wine!
Yes…I am amused that Leftist feel the taxpayer should subsidize their point of view? Very much the same her in the states with the PBS.
“When exactly did the “Tea Party” which is devoid of any Australian history/context find its way into the Australian lexicon?”
It is the calling card of dumb leftists who want a cheap insult but lack the wit to come up with something even vaguely original. 7.30 Retardland can’t get enough of it.
“It is the calling card of dumb leftists”
Rather amusing that a group that seems to detest anything “Americana” seems to lovingly embrace its unique “home grown” anti-Americanism…Small brains think alike; both sides of the “pond”…Pandemic indeed…

We see it every day in the liberal party political strategies – direct imports from the tea party. They used to be a party of ‘classical liberalism’ now they call themselves conservatives which shows how little support is in the party for classic liberals.
Cory is forced upon the voters, given the no.1 senate spot on the liberals voting ticket , guaranteeing his election [australia’s ‘democratic’ elections are actually people hand picked by the major parties and forced upon the electorate, we can’t vote for whomever we like unless we choose one of the few independents who can never win an election]
Cory Bernardi [liberal party] has front groups with direct ties and funding from the tea party.
http://www.theglobalmail.org/feature/if-you-like-sarah-palin-youll-absolutely-love-cory-bernardi/390/
Bernardi’s most important connections are with the Tea Party movement in the US.

Yes…I am amused that Leftist feel the taxpayer should subsidize their point of view? Very much the same her in the states with the PBS.
Probably because ‘leftists’ want their news delivery untainted by commercial vested interests and available freely to all. We want news not ‘infotainment’ and opinion disguised as news.
Fairfax? Crikey? The Conversation? The Guardian? Arena? New Matilda?
I read all of those and subscribe to some, that is my choice and I can afford it, some cannot. The guardian has only recently started up an australian edition and not all australians, especially the poor and the elderly are internet savvy or connected, country people don’t always have a reliable connection. The ABC serves all australians, city and remote country dwellers very well, it is freely available to all, as news content should be.
Essential: Support for privatisation
http://essentialvision.com.au/support-for-privatisation
There was majority opposition to privatising each of the Government-owned corporations listed.
Privatisation of Australia Post (69%) and ABC/SBS (64%) were most strongly opposed.
While support for privatisation of these corporations was higher among Liberal/National voter, they were still more likely to oppose than support. Apart from Medibank Private (40% support/46% oppose) and the NBN (42%/46%), a majority of Liberal/National voters opposed privatisation of each corporation.
Yes…I am amused that Leftist feel the taxpayer should subsidize their point of view? Very much the same her in the states with the PBS.
Oh, I need to point out your error of fact, the ABC is not a leftist organisation. I know that to ‘the right’ anything central or left of a fascist viewpoint might seem leftist or [BOO- shit pants] communist, that is your bias and prejudice talking, not fact or reality.
“Oh, I need to point out your error of fact, the ABC is not a leftist organisation.”
It is all relative. It is probably not left compared to the Communist Party of Australia. But compared to the majority of Australians who just voted the Coalition into office it is way, way left.
Tb there are people controlling trains and card via android apps with a Pic chip via control voltage.
Thanks, RP, I run DCC (digital command control via the track to decoders in the engines/locomotives and turnouts/points) …

Thanks for the interest …
“………..the ABC is not a leftist organisation.”
Then you wont mind if we just sell it then……………….. LOL
And didn’t someone survey its staff last year only to find that something like 60% were inclined to vote Green.
Obviously that’s not Left enough for you
TB Look at the KOGAN android tablets great value for money….
Fuck off Splatter bottom your fucktard analysis of the national broadcaster is blinkered by the walls of your anal cavity. Australians did not vote to touch the ABC, like you these pricks are dishonest ideologists trying to batter a turd and feed it to everyone as a mandate souffle.
They are ideological terrorists throwing socially divise bombs of bullshit…
“Fuck off Splatter bottom your fucktard analysis of the national broadcaster is blinkered by the walls of your anal cavity.”
Don’t be like that Bed Pann. Cute as you are when you get all shouty, you need to couple the abuse with logic. That last point is always a struggle for leftists.
You should at least try to be up-front like Kitty Litter – she wants the ABC to preserve its current biased reporting because she likes its leftist slant and she wants it for free because leftists are entitled to everything for free. Like the ABC, leftists hate Australia – it is a marriage made in heaven.
And didn’t someone survey its staff last year only to find that something like 60% were inclined to vote Green.
Obviously that’s not Left enough for you
Is that 60% of the journos who responded? IIRC, there was 42% who refused to respond to the survey. Would you show me the evidence to prove the journos personal political views are represented in their work? From what I’ve read the journos reported that their bosses views took precedence and wasn’t there an overwhelming bias to the liberals by the news editors? [those bosses who dictate the news agenda & direction]
You should at least try to be up-front like Kitty Litter – she wants the ABC to preserve its current biased reporting because she likes its leftist slant and she wants it for free because leftists are entitled to everything for free.
Not what I said at all sb, you’ve verballed me, I went to great pains to explain why the ABC should be available to all. So typical of the right to misinform and distort, it’s like you can’t understand plain english, it all gets reinterpreted to fit with preconceived prejudices and bigotry then spewed out with no resemblance of the original. You have just displayed the right brain at work, would have been interesting viewing under a real time MRI scan!
Like the ABC, leftists hate Australia…
spare us the jingoism, false patriotism etc 🙄 🙄
“Not what I said at all sb”
True in a literal sense, but what you say has to be interpreted in the context of your extreme leftist ideology to get at your real meaning.
And unlike the ABC, I don’t want to provoke a war with Indonesia. Sadly the left, including the ABC, is so outraged that the boats have stopped coming lately that they will do anything to promote bad relations with our neighbour in the hope of scoring a few cheap political points. The fact that that will mean more drownings doesn’t phase them one bit.
You only have to interpret what I say, no preconceived context, bias or prejudice necessary at all.
Yep, you have just further demonstrated the hatreds, bigotry, bias and racism of the right wing brain.
And unlike the ABC, I don’t want to provoke a war with Indonesia.
Is the ABC out on the high seas sabotaging boats and pushing them back? Is the ABC making incursions into the sovereign territory of another nation? Is the ABC tapping the phones of the Indonesian president & family? Did the ABC say that the navy burned the hands of AS or did they say that the AS claim that they have? Were the burns real or painted on?
In other words the ABC should not independently report any news.
They should just report to please the abbott and people like you, much like the the state owned media of the peoples republic of china.
‘Is there a tide of public outrage over the ABC and SBS?’
Yes, they are biased, particularly on climate change.
Speaking of hatreds, bigotry and bias, weren’t you the one who thought it was OK for lefty demonstrators to assault little old ladies?
Cute as you are when you get all shouty, you need to couple the abuse with logic.
I wish you could demonstrate that occasionally … 🙄 🙄 🙄
“Is the ABC tapping the phones of the Indonesian president & family?”
No that was the Green/Labor government.
The ABC is uncritically reporting allegations without even checking if they are true. And when they find out they are false, instead of acknowledging that, they make even more shit up. They are doing their level best to aggravate the Indonesians by making wild allegations into apparently credible stories. Granted this might not be because of malice. They are leftists, after all, and you can’t get more stupid than that.
“sabotaging boats”
Really ?
Like when ???????????????????????????????
Surely, TB, you are not suggesting that I am abusive and/or illogical?
I thought my response to Bed Pann was quite moderate given his very unfair commen, namelyt: “Fuck off Splatter bottom your fucktard analysis of the national broadcaster is blinkered by the walls of your anal cavity.”
I mean it is all very well for him to gloat just because he has a stinking puss-ridden anal fistula to squeeze his tiny pointy head out of! It is not that his eyes are blinkered so much as that they are smeared with his own slimy leftist shit. There. Do you think that response is better? Personally I am above that sort of abuse so instead I tried a more moderate tone. What would you have done?
“Really ?
Like when ???????????????????????????????”
Obviously you don’t spend enough time imbibing ABC Kool Aid, Walrus.
“The ABC is uncritically reporting allegations without even checking if they are true.”
Exactly
A real journalist, unlike the crap ones the ABC employs on over the market salaries, would actually invite a response from the ADF BEFORE yelling the “News” from the rooftops.
Not the ABC though. Oh no………… they’d rather have their Leftist Crap journos make a name for themselves BEFORE the Navy gets a chance to respond. Then they shoot off an email to the Navy revealing they actually doubted their own story in the first place.
Frankly I do hope the LNP totally gut the Metro ABC (Regional they should keep intact)so hard they’ll need to return to Black and White Test Patterns after 7:30pm.
I’ll be the first one lining the footpath at the Sydney Ultimo Headquaters clapping furiously as one after one they all trundle off to Centrelink.
Afterall the ABC is just another government department and a luxury that we can ill afford. They should not think they are immune to austerity
‘In other words the ABC should not independently report any news.’
They have developed a left wing news room, primarily because journalism schools have a left wing bias, so they naturally lean to the left in their search for the troof.
The Australian people are being brainwashed with aunty’s propaganda and its a disgrace.
‘Frankly I do hope the LNP totally gut the Metro ABC (Regional they should keep intact)’
I applaud your sentiment, a revolutionary idea.
“Fuck off Splatter bottom your fucktard analysis of the national broadcaster is blinkered by the walls of your anal cavity.”
Splatter
I thought PooPann was usually simply channeling his hero the ever diplomatic Mr Rudd.
Afterall I think that’s pretty much verbatim what he had to say to the Chinese delegation at the Nopenhagen in 2009.
All Lefties talk like PooPann
I mean it is all very well for him to gloat just because he has a stinking puss-ridden anal fistula to squeeze his tiny pointy head out of!

the Sydney and Melbourne news is junk on commercial networks, with a heap of `promotion` (that`s adverting dopey) inserted into it.
lt would be reasonable to assume the rest of the east-coast commercial-news is equally crap.
Pets of murdoch wrongly assume killing off my abc/sbs will make murdoch richer and more powerful. WRONG.
lf viewers `lost` my abc/sbs, the `windfall` teabags dream of, would be a windfall for others, e.g-Crikey Not Limited-news.
dumpty also repeats the teabag wetdream with,
””””””””’They have developed a left wing news room, primarily because journalism schools have a left wing bias”””””’
providing messages to those that don`t think deeply and are very easily swayed, certain themes are developed at Limited-News because they are very cheap to produce,
”””oh, oh the abc, shut it down, etc””’
is one of those cheap productions for dills, yes, they are dills,
the last thing Limited-News would really want, is my abc to actually be closed, because then, Limited-News megaphones would have to get off their arses and go and `get` their content, not merely copy/paste from my abc, and,
their easily swayed dills would no longer have a much beloved topic of enragement, which Limited-News would need to find a replacement for,
#Tinfoil.for.Teabags
‘providing messages to those that don`t think deeply and are very easily swayed’
Of course, I forgot, the right are fkn greedy capitalists and the masses ignorant, only the left have the answers.
‘providing messages to those that don`t think deeply and are very easily swayed’
because teabag-media know that dills will re-chant it without any thought what-so-ever, they are just feeding their dills,
just as nova and watts does
‘dills will re-chant it without any thought what-so-ever, they are just feeding their dills,’
The ABC and SBS have been remiss on climate change, yet because of their credibility in the eyes of the public the propaganda went unnoticed. It was highly effective in getting the message across and then the meme entered the education system like a free radical, a cancerous growth.
The cost to the taxpayer for this monstrous folly is beyond measure.
My gravatar is beautifully tight and pleasantly pink, just waiting to be kissed (unlike Bed Pann’s gaping, ragged prolapsed hole).

Clever some of those Kiwis – we have one in the clan …
…. our very own “flag” certainly doesn’t represent the diversity of our population and their origins … that fkn union jack needs to go – a more appropriate “flag” would be the one representing our aboriginal nation …
Change the blue to black background and the stars to yellow and an aboriginal flag in the corner – three colours (easy to reproduce) and a recognition of the original landowners … and a flag that represents our nation …
this nation is in an `economic`emergency`, therefore,
we shouldn`t be throwing taxpayer cash on the bonfire when the nation has way more pressing topics to use that cash on,
also, dunny would be devastated, as he has only just mastered incinerating the current flag
