Tony Abbott’s Worst Nightmare becomes a Reality

February 25, 2014

Gay people are fleeing Uganda because they fear for their lives after the introduction of a law that stiffens penalties for homosexuals.

“I am really scared. Right now, I am getting threats left, right and centre from unknown people through telephone calls, text messages and Facebook,” gay activist Dennis Wamala said.

According to Julian Pepe Onziema, a member of the human rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda, about a dozen gays have already moved to neighbouring Kenya since the bill was approved by parliament in late December.

“People are coming to us saying they want to leave,” Onziema said on Monday, the day the bill was signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni.

The law, which has been strongly criticised by Western governments and human rights groups, punishes first-time offenders with up to 14 years in jail.

People convicted of having had same-sex intercourse with a disabled person or a minor, as well as HIV-positive people caught engaging in homosexual acts, face the risk of life imprisonment.

With over 80 per cent of the population of nearly 35 million describing themselves as Christian, Ugandan society is widely supportive of the new law.

In defending it, Museveni has said that he wants to protect Ugandan children after being persuaded by scientists that homosexuality is a learnt behaviour, rather than hereditary.

“Their [scientists] unanimous conclusion was that homosexuality, contrary to my earlier thinking, was behavioural and not genetic. It was learnt and could be unlearnt,” Museveni said.

Activists, however, say the bill has only ended up stoking homophobia.

“Police keep harassing me. They are turning the public against me. I get threatening phone calls. I fear for my life,” Sam Ganafa, who is already facing charges related to homosexual offences, said.

The 42-year old said he had already heard of “arrests and attempted mob justice” against homosexuals.

He cites the recent case of a woman who was allegedly gang-raped by people wanting to “cure her of lesbianism”.

With major donors such as the United States, Denmark and Sweden having already threatened retaliatory measures against Uganda, local gay activists say they will not give up without a fight.

“We are going to stay around and fight on. We are going to challenge [the law] in court,” says Wamala.

It will be extremely difficult for Uganda’s gay community to overturn the law.

With homosexuality traditionally frowned upon in large parts of Africa, even Uganda’s opposition politicians have not openly condemned the law out of concern that it will cost them votes.

Yet the “left” tells me all cultures are created equal, to be treated as such…PLEASE….if ever there was a blinding example of why multiculturalism is complete rubbish it’s such examples as this!

I disagree with multiculturalism too … but what does that have to do with anti-gay laws in Uganda?

Multicultralism is a divisive descent into tribalism. What we should be aiming at is a society which promotes diversity within a single culture, a culture which guarantees the protection and liberty of its citizens and in which people from diverse backgrounds can learn from each other.

The problems are plain to see when a 55 year old man gets a one month sentence for the anal rape of a 14 year old girl because in his wonderful culture she was his promised bride. In fact crimes based on disgusting cultural norms should be treated as aggravated offences and the perp should be subjected to a greater sentence.

What the? Where does the “diversity” come from. Should those from other cultures abandon their “diversity” for the chosen cultures created “diversity”

EXACTLY!! Do people like Scott Morrison decide what Australia’s “diversity” should be like….???

I agree with that. Perhaps you need to chase up on the meaning of “multiculturalism” also?

My suggestion is that we have liberty to live by whatever cultural beliefs we choose within a wider culture which guarantees individual liberty and equal opportunity. Equality before the law trumps multiculturalism every time.

If, in the name of multiculturalism, we fail to teach English as a first language to particular cultural groups how on earth will those children have a chance of making their way in the wider community and profiting from the benefits it offers?

When diversity means calling for legalisation of cliterectomies or calls for separate groups to be subject to their own laws or when we change our laws to limit free speech because some morons are hypersensitive about criticism of their pedophile prophet or when judges reduce sentences because of someone’s depraved cultural beliefs then we have a problem. Why should children be put at risk because new class wackos deem it more important that they be placed with families of the same cultural background? How many children have to be molested in the name of multiculturalism before even the most cretinous multicultralist has had enough?

At first instance the rapist got a month. On appeal he got 18 months.

When a judge gives a drastically reduced sentence such as in that case he is showing contempt for the rights of a child. And he is doing it the name of multiculturalism. What the judge did was apply the law of the land as he saw it. Even on a appeal the sentence was an inadequate 18 months:

Justice Mildren said the law had stopped short of making promised marriages illegal.

“(But) such marriages cannot be consummated until the promised wife has turned 16,” he said.”

In any sane world it would be much better if the judge, not the fourteen year old girl had been anally raped. Then he might not have been so cavalier about endorsing arranged marriages of children.

And he is doing it the name of multiculturalism.

That’s not the reason the article gave

A decision by NT Chief Justice Brian Martin to sentence the man to only one month’s jail after accepting he was unaware his actions were offences under NT law has created a furore.

    It also mentioned this

Senator Ellison said it needed to be spelt out clearly at the national level that there was only one law for Australians.

So remember, multiculturalism isn’t about allowing other cultures to break laws, it is about celebrating the diversity they offer. Trying to blame stupidity like the judges sentencing on multiculturalism is being completely disingenuous. I do understand that there is debate about laws for Aboriginals, but that isn’t about multiculturalism, that is targeting Aboriginals only, and is a different subject, as no other culture has the same latitude.

I like diversity. I think we can learn heaps from other cultures. But that doesn’t mean that we have to take the bad with the good. I like Hayek’s theory of social development – that social practices are adopted or not by learning from others who try different social arrangements, kind of a market theory of society.

My argument is that we have should one culture which allows diversity. I think “celebrates” is OTT, out there with “noble savage” style thinking. Within any culture there are odious beliefs which should not be encouraged or accepted. The point is to take what is good, reject what is offensive and accept, perhaps with a wry smile, the rest.

    I like Mencken’s comment:

“We must respect the other fellow’s religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.”

I wonder why the law has stopped short in making arranged marriages illegal??

Maybe what we need is law reform where parents cannot sell or promise their daughters off to any man.

I’m aware that there are promised marriages in traditional aboriginal society, but I have always been against that tradition which includes older men setting themselves up with young & innocent girls to own and control until they die. The girls have the best years of their lives wasted on the demands of old men.

Seems we still have a long way to go in allowing both men and women to have ownership and control over their own bodies, even in our own supposedly free society women are still having to defend their fertility rights and choices and homophobia remains.

What is the history and tradition of marriage anyway?

Wasn’t long ago in our western society that males took legal possession of his wife, her money & property as his own.

All we need to do is ensure access to education and protection of the legal and human rights of individuals to allow change to occur. And most importantly, insist upon a secular society!

Splatter take a Valium mate..Clitectomies, sodomy and English? WTF. What planet are you living on? This shit has nothing to do with multiculturalism, as is the licence to hate in repealing the racial vilification act. That has more to do with allowing Rupert and his cohorts the ability to vilify people based on ethnicity and not get sued, which has nothing whatsoever to do with free speech.

All cultures and cultural customs are tolerated in Australia only with the law. This whole sharia law bullshit is just a furfey used by racist to further fuel their hate. You may notice that this shit with the underage marriage was shut down and prosecuted swiftly to quell any community backlash,

One thing we all agree on is integration and assimilation, but tat is an education process. I personally think that if you wish to migrate here English MUST be mandatory as without it there is no hope.

Multiculturalism is working in Australia as long as secularism is strongly entrenched in our democracy.

I prefer Xanax to Valium but the doc won’t give me any. Reckons it is too addictive.

We probably both agree that cliterectomy is a bad cultural norm, that anal rape of a 14 year old is a bad thing and that English should be mastered as a primary language.

I don’t know what planet you are living on, but a judge in the country I’m living in thought it was OK to give a 55 year old man a one month sentence for the anal rape of his 14 year old promised bride. The court of appeal upped the sentence to a still inadequate 18 months but insisted that they were not making promised marriages illegal. That is pure multicultural bullshit. Judges regularly mitigate sentences because of disgusting cultural values of perps. That is pure bullshit.

We have the absurd case of a clergyman fleeing Pakistan because he was threatened with blasphemy charges then being convicted, in effect, of blasphemy in Victoria, where ‘serious ridicule’ of a religion is an offense. You can thank multiculturalism for that.

We have a stupid old Nazi crank locked up for 6 months for not taking down his website. That is outrageous. You can thank multiculturalism for that.

It won’t be long before the professional finger-waggers come for you.

The sooner we get back the right to free speech the better.

This repeal of Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act is all bout the licence to sell advertising based on vilifying people for their race. It has nothing whatever to do with free speech.

The idea of consummation is even more revolting, and that isn’t simply pandering to some hate campaign by News Ltd or anyone else.

    What an odd contrast-
