Autopsy Shows Michael Brown Was Struck at Least Six Times
Right now, a State of Emergency has been declared in the town of Ferguson, where black American teenager Michael Brown was shot dead by police.
The autopsy report has just been released, that shows that the unnamed teenager was struck at least six times by bullets fired by the officers.
One of the bullets entered the top of Mr. Brown’s skull, suggesting his head was bent forward when it struck him and caused a fatal injury, according to Dr. Michael M. Baden, the former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, who flew to Missouri on Sunday at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. It was likely the last of bullets to hit him, he said.
Mr. Brown, 18, was also shot four times in the right arm, he said, adding that all the bullets were fired into his front.
The bullets did not appear to have been shot from very close range because no gunpowder was present on his body. However, that determination could change if it turns out that there is gunshot residue on Mr. Brown’s clothing, to which Dr. Baden did not have access.

Police threaten to shoot reporters covering Ferguson riots…

USA is strife torn, racially divided, full of resentful get square attitudes based on race, overlaid with plenty of redneck police.
It is a slippery slope, there’s no return once the mutual retribution starts.
Has any police member ever been charged with death by cop?
Here in australia there have been plenty of deaths in custody and no cop is charged. I remember being angry about the palm island death of cameron doomagee and the killer cop still remains in the force. The police investigate themselves – something that really needs to stop, there should be independent investigations.
How Congress Helped Create Ferguson’s Militarized Police:
“Since 2006, the Pentagon has distributed 432 mine-resistant armored vehicles to local police departments. It has also doled out more than 400 other armored vehicles, 500 aircraft, and 93,000 assault rifles.

…This afternoon, the chief gave a second press conference. Why would he do that? Well, he’d somehow managed to create the impression in his first press conference that the officer who killed Mr Brown was responding to the robbery. In fact, that was not the case. The Ferguson policeman was unaware that Brown was a robbery suspect at the time he encountered him and shot him dead. Which is presumably why Chief Jackson was leaned on to give his second press conference and tidy up the mess from the first. So we have an officer who sees two young men, unwanted for any crime, walking down the middle of the street and stops his cruiser. Three minutes later one of them is dead…

USA is strife torn …
Its a society that suffers permanent PTSD for many reasons … least of which is the subject we regularly discuss here … the widening gap between rich and poor …
Why on earth would anyone want to wander down the US life experience …?
The police investigate themselves – something that really needs to stop, there should be independent investigations.
Agree … its a bit like the HSU investigating itself … or the NSW Liberal Party investigating itself …
Its always fascinated me how organisations like ICAC actually get to do what they do … like Fitzgerald here in Qld … and the CMC before the LNP got their grubby hands on it … now dead in the water …
(I used to wonder why some of my online acquaintances half-jokingly said they lived in St Louis, Misery. Update: Missouri national guard to be deployed at Ferguson protests)
coming soon to a city near you,
welcome to the future
This just keeps getting worse…
Video shows Michael Brown paid for cigars. Store owner says he did NOT call police,
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/08/18/ferguson-pd-busted/
So the police use theft to characterise this youth (an outlaw) as part of their public relations response…but he’s not.
It’s typcial of the redneck, trigger happy culture.
“”It’s typcial of the redneck, trigger happy culture.””
And its the Price they will always pay for their Gun Culture.
We are a bit overdue for this month’s school massacre by the way
The most hideous culprits in this toxic situation are the cynical practitioners of identiity politics who, long before the evidence is in explode in race-baiting rage fomenting violence, looting and civil unrest. They are the real cancer in this society.
JASON RILEY, WALL STREET JOURNAL:
And its the Price they will always pay for their Gun Culture.
Guns don’t kill … people do!
If you believe otherwise get rid of cars and smart phones and knives in your kitchen … the USA population is paranoid … the national and international stress is literally making them paranoid …
Watch the LNP attempt the same nonsense here … create chaos and attempt to control it …
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
They are the real cancer in this society.
Your right … the haves and have nots … the Robber Barons and the villagers they raped, pillaged and sacked …
… as our tour guide in Egypt constantly repeated … “nothing is new” …
We do not want to end ups the same way … and the current government is fomenting a generation against generation divide (chaos and control) … the psychology is so simple and effective its worked for centuries … but eventually catches up … ask the Catholic Church!
I see the Pope has given himself three years before he pops* off … self fulfilling?
If he does, according to Nostradamus, he’s the last of the Popes … there will be “conflagration” in the middle east and finally the Bear will lie down with the Eagle and there will then be a Golden Age …
I do hope Nostradamus is right …
Because the “new world order” does nothing for you and yours …
“create chaos and
attemptpretend to control it …”Exactly.
I wonder if people will ever wisen up to that?
‘I do hope Nostradamus is right …’
Not happy, where’s the dragon in Nostra’s yarn.
Not happy, where’s the dragon in Nostra’s yarn.
Good question, egg … I’ll see if I can check … but maybe the sleeping dragon will do just that … as the oldest, modern civilisation on the planet, I suspect it too is sick of war …
They put little value on war.
””””’nothing is new””””#agree
(Highly Likely; Ferguson will be a re-run of the LA riots and fires and looting, set-off after Rodney King.)
””””death by cop?”””’
sorry armchair, your context is wrong,
`death by cop` is basically a `suicide`, (or voluntary euthanasia) people that want to `end-it` do
””””’nothing is new””””#agree
Many do. Jason Riley truly appears to be in the minority with his “opinion”
So who is creating the chaos here? That would be the usual hucksters like Al Sharpton and Spike Lee, the New Black Panthers and the usual bunch of fools who bring their idiot ideology of identity politics to the party.
As soon as anything like this happens, truth goes out the window because dumb leftists and political chancers pre-judge the matter based on thier prejudices. They fire up the lynch mob and, chaos ensues.
Or is it “baddies and baddies” ❓
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-08-20/ferguson-cop-points-gun-protesters-and-press-screams-i-will-fing-kill-you-has-been-r
As soon as anything like this happens
You mean, it’s not like this is the first time 😯
So who is creating the chaos here?
Abbott’s mentor taught him <badly) to divide and conquer …
eg If we don't make the old, and sick, and young take less welfare* then the next generation will be paying for ever … rich and poor, sirs and fuckwits, asylum seekers and us, the muslims and us … the Russians are coming … Team Australia … you're either with us or against us … we have a budget crisis … we need stronger terror laws … blah blah blah … fear mongering only works short term … but its prime purpose is to create a doubt in people's minds that can be exploited – and controlled …
Or did your, "here", mean Ferguson?
Don't confuse people without power rioting because of frustration with those in power creating chaos (or even the concept of a crisis) …
As soon as anything like this happens, truth goes out the window because dumb leftists and political chancers pre-judge the matter based on their {sic} prejudices
I’m curious to know how you know all these protesters are “dumb leftists and political chancers” being apolitical as you are … ?
*as opposed to pollies and fat cats taking a paycut, removing negative gearing and eliminating family trusts … egalitarian society my arse … we have become an Elysium Experiment in the real world …
“Don’t confuse people without power rioting because of frustration with those in power creating chaos”
We agree then! Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Spike Lee are not “people without power”. They have an interest in ginning up the mob, as do the other radicals who have inserted themselves into this situation from around the country. So, in the absence of facts they inflame the situation by shoe-horning it into their stupid leftist narrative. They are indeed people in power creating chaos.
“I’m curious to know how you know all these protesters are “dumb leftists and political chancers” being apolitical as you are … ?” Are you illiterate or merely deceitful? I didn’t say anything about all the protesters, did I? I spoke about the powerful vested interests firing up a lynch mob to create chaos. That is precisely the issue you seem keen to avoid in this case.
(“Spike, how did you get so many people there?
Lee: We just put the word out: “Public Enemy video.” People showed up. The police were scared though.
Why?
Lee: That many people? They always get scared. But there was not one incident. It was great. And the police were not a problem. As long as you’re done by 6, we’re all right.”)
That is precisely the issue you seem keen to avoid in this case.
Why would I be “keen” to avoid an issue … Are you illiterate or merely deceitful?
(For Certain; teh-usa could benefit greatly if Ferguson receives guests from Topeka waving placards and screaming `Dog Hates Black Fags`. More than one problem could be solved.)
I don’t know *why* you chose to misrepresent what I said instead of addressing the point I actually made. Perhaps you can explain.
Here is what I said:
“As soon as anything like this happens, truth goes out the window because dumb leftists and political chancers pre-judge the matter based on their prejudices. They fire up the lynch mob and, chaos ensues.”
You then said “I’m curious to know how you know all these protesters are “dumb leftists and political chancers”.
Your comment was disingenuous since I didn’t refer to all protesters. Can you tell me why you chose to misrepresent what I said?
My interest here is in the political activists, celebrity twats and race hustlers. They chose to jump in with their preferred narrative long before they knew what actually happened. The effect of their malignant actions was violence, death, injury and destruction of property. Don’t you find that disgusting?
(But will Spike stick around when things go all `Columbine`?)
Political chancers are in bed with the race hustlers and dumb Leftists who`re trying desperately to make `walking-while-black` a lawful activity, even tho they`re not legally brown. You should not surrender your bed-sheets and continue to wear them proudly.
Your comment was disingenuous since I didn’t refer to all protesters. Can you tell me why you chose to misrepresent what I said?
Anyone can read what your comment said … you just seem to fire up about the left constantly … since I didn’t refer to all protesters
No you didn’t say “all” but I was referring to that comment above and all the others in the past … people other than the left protest and fire up the crowd as you well know … Ditch the Witch ring a ding ding … ?
Don’t you find that disgusting?
You have to ask? … how long have you commented here? And you call me disingenuous?
Closer to home … and creating more chaos … don’t you find the Prime Minister frightening ordinary Australians disgusting and insulting to law abiding Muslims?
http://www.news.com.au/national/tony-abbott-says-muslim-leaders-were-foolish-for-refusing-to-sit-down-with-him/story-fncynjr2-1227031842592
BTW … what’s with the asterisks … === I don’t know *why*

could happen here in Australia.
WTF!!
Mind you, Essendon supporters are sore losers….
Meanwhile in other Crime News Opposition Leader Bill Shorten calls a press conference to confirm he was not a rapist during the 1980s presumably when he was young and naive
“…..don’t you find the Prime Minister frightening ordinary Australians disgusting and insulting to law abiding Muslims?”
Why ?…………………..Ivan Milat decapitated at least one of his victims.
Why does the Left insist we just ignore the trail of death that ISIL leave behind ?
“”Can you tell me why you chose to misrepresent what I said?””
Don’t worry Splat…………………TB and TomR verbal and attribute third party statements as primary quotes all the time. Look at my discussion with TomR just this morning
2 peas in a pod.
Then they both go completely unhinged when you pick them up on it plus throw in stacks of “look over theres” hoping you’ll lose track of what you caught them out on in the first place.
It’s typical of their bullshit
(I don’t ignore it; I wouldn’t mind reading a copy of ‘the letter’ component of ‘the message’ from the murderous, barbarous, evil ISIL propagandists to gauge just how depraved quasi-bargaining with innocent lives and with misplaced/ing and dehumanised/ing lex…talionis(?) might be; but, that text seems to have been largely omitted, redacted, or forgotten from image-inative official and media accounts to-date.
Or, I’m with you, Splatter, and the WSJ: due diligence, first.)
The original post on Kevin Rudd’s Facebook page last September was this …………..
“Dearest Mr Rudd, I have known Bill Shorten since 1985. In 1986, after I had been elected onto the Rural Policy Committee and delegate to State and national Youth Conference and State Conference at 16yo, I went to a AYL camp, near Geelong, and Bill pushed me into a bathroom and did things to me without my permission. I have spoken to the head of sex crimes in Qld but I’m scared. I don’t expect you to read this and you probably get crazy messages all the time but, I need help. Thankyou again for everything and I sorry that ALP did this to you too.”
TR is good at splitting hairs and never tires.
“2 peas in a pod.”
That is a bit harsh. TomR is the master troll. TB doesn’t come close. TB frequently has moments of clarity and candour whereas TomR never goes off message no matter how stupid it makes him look.
“beheadings ….. could happen here in Asutralia”
Like in England?
No, it would be completely irresponsible for a PM to even think about the possibility much less waste resources taking precautions against it. Even to mention that there may be a problem is clearly a a calculated insult.
We don’t need a more vigilant government. That only inspires fear and loathing. Wisely, the ABC tells us that “our best defence is of course our cultured reason. Our tolerance. Our audacious confidence in the fundamental goodness of others. Maybe even our sense of humour.”
So just forget about all that nasty stuff Australians are doing overseas, and don’t worry about what they might do when they come back, and don’t worry about the ones who are desperate to go over for an Iraqi hack-a-thon but have to stay here for a while. Our cultured reason will save the day! Not to mention our tolerance and our sense of humour. Did you see that picture of the Aussie kid? Oh how we laughed and laughed.
We really need to reinforce the tolerance message. The worst possible thing would be to actually believe these naughty boys when they say they are acting in accordance with the Koran. Everyone knows that Islam is a religion of peace and that is all we need to know about it.
“I wouldn’t mind reading a copy of ‘the letter’ component of ‘the message’ from the murderous, barbarous, evil ISIL propagandists”
I too would like to read more from IS. Emir Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, their leader, is an interesting chap and a learned Islamic scholar. People like Obama are saying nasty things about him and his Caliphate not representing true Islam. I’d certainly be interested in hearing his point of view on this.
Likewise, to understand Hamas you should start with their Charter which sets out the Islamic basis of their murderous anti-Semitic agenda.
Oh noes!
Now the Malaysians have got on the Abbott bandwagon. Instead of arresting people they should have more audacious confidence in the fundamental goodness of others.
Splat……………..
All that lovely goodness you speak of……………….Seems you are a bit of a fan of Jonathon Green on the ABC”?
I prefer the goodness that comes from the detonation coil of a smart bomb aimed at the head of an ISIL leader myself……………………but that’s just murderous old moi
‘…but that’s just murderous old moi’
Me too, the UN should put an international bounty on his head, dead or alive.
(lgnore it. You won`t be reading letter components created by Terror-Fear-ist[?]s as Govt/s already have corporations omitting, redacting and misplacing images from youimage and tubeimage accounts already. lt is also futile turning to teabag-media for the image/text you seek, due diligence is the first casualty of reporting.)
… but that’s just murderous old moi …
Yeah, as long as someone else does it … you’d shit yourself in the dark at night …

‘CHURCH leaders have called on Australians to stop turning a blind eye to the butchery of Christians, as well as Muslims and other groups, by radicals from Islamic State. The Catholic Bishop of Parramatta, Anthony Fisher, said church leaders had been reluctant to speak out for fear of adding fuel to fire. “But, as fellow Christians and fellow human beings, we cannot turn a blind eye to this persecution and religious cleansing,’’ Bishop Fisher said. “The situation has deteriorated extraordinarily quickly. This is almost a classic case where intervention of some kind, such as the American strikes on extremists is warranted to defend innocent lives.’’

ROFL
Something an “average” person might mull over
When pictures circulated on social media of journalist James Foley being executed by the Islamic State, journalists came over all sniffy about how vulgar social media is.
Once those pictures were published in the Murdoch press – first The New York Post, later in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, the snobbery about social media seemed to have gone into abeyance. In its place is some sort of general malaise about the world that we live in, rather than experienced people identifying the problem and calling it out.

I agree.
I know 60 Minutes is chasing the woman in which case I’m sure Seven’s Sunday Night would be doing the same.
I remember a little tête-à-tête between ToM and TomR over name “poaching”
Ah, memories. I can’t recall who the original Tom of Melbourne was though, but I do recall quite few posters querying the “Tom of Melbourne” avatar about his statements until the second yomm fessed up. It was quite out of character for the original.
The original, after much argy bargy by yomm, just said it aint worth it, and became someone else. I just cannot remember who it was 😦
But, that was back in the days when yomm was very vociferous in his support of a particular legislation 🙂
Now, back to “Trolling” 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
I don’t know much about the history but I enjoy the company here. Especially our tolerant and talented host. And the trolls are among the best in the business.
Two questions – how come the letter T is alphabetically over-represented (TB, ToSy, ToM, Toilet Boss, TomR)? And if el gordo was one of the originals, was he always criticised this much or did the attacks start only after his recent involuntary gender re-assignment?
(Placing all like-noms into the same natural-arbitrary class, naturally-arbitrarily-sampling or purpose-selecting from among nom-aliked varied-samed expressions, and treating any and all nom-alikes accordingly would be unusual, and could prove interesting; even better would be naturally-arbitrarily naming nom-(un)alikes, for innomgroup-outnomgroup effect. I guess.

Police arrest five Ugandans,
accuse them of trying to turn kids gay
Round-up appears to endorse government’s bid to win back aid from the west
09 July 2014 | By Tris Reid-Smith
Pader, northern Uganda: Police have arrested five people on suspicion of ‘promoting’ homosexuality.
Five people have been arrested for ‘promoting’ homosexuality in northern Uganda.
The senior officer Pader Central Police Station, Romeo Ojara Onek, confirmed the arrest to the Monitor, and said they are investigating.
He said the among the suspects are two businessmen, one teacher, and two students.
Locals apparently accused the group of ‘promoting’ homosexuality in primary and secondary schools Pader district and ‘recruiting’ pupils and students to be homosexual.
But Ugandan LGBTI campaigner Edwin Sesange dismissed that claim. He said nobody was ‘promoting’ homosexuality or ‘recruiting’ people into being LGBTI and that to do so was impossible.
The new arrests coincide with a statement by the Ugandan Government claiming their Anti-Homosexuality Act has been misinterpreted and is not really anti-gay.
They claim it only aims to ‘stop promotion and exhibition of homosexual practices’.
The new statement was widely seen as a desperate bid by the government to win back aid from the west, cut because of their homophobia.
Sesange, director of the Africa LGBTI Out and Proud Diamond Group, said: ‘The government is trying to invent plots to back up their statement.
‘The government now is trying to play on the minds of Ugandans that homosexuals are trying to promote homosexuality. But nobody is promoting homosexuality.
‘We urge people in Uganda to be vigilant.’
Gay Star News sources in Uganda are trying to uncover more information about the arrests.

What`s the bet that uganda is deeply dog-bothered, my bet christian.
l notice that when these type of dumb-fcuks are reported about, they always omit the failed `turn-them-straight` practices and programs of the past, which were often run by christian dog-clubs. (Perhaps, if their teabag-media actually pointed out these failures of misery to the uganda-govt, they might just spare themselves a whole lot of stupid hurt in uganda.)

Ah yes, Deltoid. It was there that TomR invited all of us over to Trash, nobody else came but me and it was luv at first sight.
Derailing is not all that unusual around here, but don’t worry I have found gigs elsewhere to satisfy my obsession.

”The original, after much argy bargy by yomm, just said it aint worth it, and became someone else. I just cannot remember who it was”
He said he would start posting as Tom of Melbourne the First, I suggested that he should use Prince Tom of Melbourne the First. I think he simply posted as Thomas (or something) after that.
The background it – he did get all bothered and the spat only lasted one evening, when I first started commenting at Blogocracy. I posted a couple of comments, went out for dinner and came back to observe a few people all bothered about me misappropriating a blog name. It all seemed a little precious to me then, and it still does now.

That’s why Melbournians are so fkn negative!
“Yes, it’s very ordinary here. Just like Queensland.”
You wouldn’t fkn know! Its eight times bigger’n your little hovel … I hope you have fkn visa … all Mexicans need a visa …
not to mention living in the shadow of sydney
the gold-coast doesn`t really represent brisbane or the rest of qld as far as l`m concerned, the coastal area between brisbane and nsw border is pretty much an extension of the central-coast, filled with bogans and assorted arse-hats that originated in fortitude-valley, mount-druitt, holden-hill and frankston
“I’m currently on the Gold Coast”
Commiserations.
Talking of Mexico
‘Just last week, Mexico cleared its final legislative hurdle ending 76 years of state monopoly and approved rules outlining the framework under which foreign companies will invest and drill for oil and natural gas in Mexico.
‘The recent expansion of oil and gas production in Northern Mexico is expected to top $1 trillion in investment over 10 years and create over 2.5 million new jobs by 2025 creating a new energy paradigm for North America. By combining the United States, Canada, and Mexico, oil and gas production in North America will be bigger than OPEC.’
Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, Bakken News
‘Commiserations.’
I’ll second that.
“I’m currently on the Gold Coast”
Commiserations.
I wholeheartedly agree, ToSY (or whatever name your using this week) … its full of fkn tourists from colder climes … no Queenslanders go to the GC … you’ve been told that before … it’s full of crims, conmen and bikies (most from other states) … we try to keep ’em in one place rather than spread it out like Mexico does …
Yeah! The Gold Coast is hardly Queensland. Because it has land developers and other shady types…just like the rest of the state.
I suppose Brisbane is ‘the real Queensland’ with its intolerable humidity combined with being a 2 hour drive to the nearest beach.
Unfortunately the Gold Coast hosts conferences. I’ll rebook from an afternoon flight to a morning one.
I suppose Brisbane is ‘the real Queensland’ with its intolerable humidity combined with being a 2 hour drive to the nearest beach.
● It’s 100% humidity at the moment ’cause its fkn RAININ’! You should be used to that cause’ its fkn COLD too!
● I can drive to the GC (not that I do) in less than an hour … the Sunshine Coast in an hour … and the local seafront in ten minutes … nearest beach is 20 mins away …
You do waffle … starting to sound like Wally! Very disappointed in you, ToM … 🙂

“Aleppo, one of the last strongholds of the Syrian opposition, is on the verge of falling into the hands of ISIS. The loss of Aleppo would essentially end any hope of the Free Syrian Army operating as a viable fighting force going forward, as its members would disappear into the fray or if any dare fight on be mopped up by either the regime forces or ISIS. Moreover, if Aleppo falls into the grasp of the tyrant Al-Baghdadi and his many slaves, ISIS will attain a sense of security and confidence not previously enjoyed by the group. They will possess territory in two distinct sovereign entities (Iraq and Syria) and have absolute control over three major cities (Raqqa, Mosul and Aleppo).”)

Actually, the argument itself might have been short in the big picture but since from memory it started early in the day, one “evening” seems a stretch. It is also true that the brevity of the argument had everything to do with the original Tom of Melbourne and nothing at all to do with yourself yomm. But, I do recall the original Tom of Melbourne disappearing for a while and then reappearing as Thomas de loc(?) something or other, and stating with wtte that he couldn’t believe someone could be so childish and petulant. Ah, but we were only getting a prelude then 😉
Basically, you stamped your little foot and said “I’m Tom, and so’s my wife”!
It was a pretty un-impressive introduction, to say the least.
After which, you began defending workchoices at every opportunity. Some saw this as a ‘vociferous’ support of said legislation, which, when confronted with the allegation at the time, you were also unable to refute, although the denials didn’t start until years later.

After his suggestion I did, he hadn’t commented for over a week, I looked through 1000s of comments, didn’t find his. Tim Dunlop didn’t care, I don’t think he objected to having a few rational, informed, contrary comments (at that point). He even observed that many people seemed to enjoy the exchanges.

”””””””””””’The Federal Aviation Administration today issued a new Notice To Airmen (NOTAM) restricting U.S. operators from flying in the Damascus Flight Information Region, which includes all of Syria. This replaces the current NOTAM in place that strongly advises U.S. operators against flying in that airspace and requires them to contact the FAA before they operate in that airspace. Based on an updated assessment of the risk associated with such operations and the lack of any requests from operators wishing to fly in this airspace, we believe it prudent to prohibit U.S. operators from flying into, out of, and over Syria.

Tehy made 2 aircraft crash. So don’t blame non teabagz that only shot some missiles at one of tehm.
Some other non teabagz airlines like Qantas, put safety in front of profit and took the long way around.
Teabagz (eg teh Malaysian government and employees) killed 600.
(Come to think of it, one might almost expect to see some rendering of at least cursory assessment and/or attempt at first-aid by first-responders on behalf of an apparent gunshot victim, unless and until formal pronouncement of (f)utility of that exercise; but, that’s probably just an instant demarcation issue handcuffed to specialized job-roles in an otherwise exemplary American emergency response system on display; and nothing at all about which police and/or community partners really need concern themselves, training- and/or performance-wise, either.)
”””blame non teabagz that only shot some missiles at one of tehm”””and tehy conspired with teh onions to do this, without onion collaboration tehy would never have achieved this,

Early Onset Verses When l Was a Boy

”””””””””according to investigative reporter Radley Balko, over the last several decades, America’s cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as an other—an enemy.
Today’s armored-up policemen are a far cry from the constables of early America. The unrest of the 1960s brought about the invention of the SWAT unit—which in turn led to the debut of military tactics in the ranks of police officers. Nixon’s War on Drugs, Reagan’s War on Poverty, Clinton’s COPS program, the post–9/11 security state under Bush and Obama: by degrees, each of these innovations expanded and empowered police forces, always at the expense of civil liberties. And these are just four among a slew of reckless programs.
In Rise of the Warrior Cop, Balko shows how politicians’ ill-considered policies and relentless declarations of war against vague enemies like crime, drugs, and terror have blurred the distinction between cop and soldier. His fascinating, frightening narrative shows how over a generation, a creeping battlefield mentality has isolated and alienated American police officers and put them on a collision course with the values of a free society.

3.2.1.5 Recruiting and Hiring the Veteran
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan swelled the ranks of the military.
Currently, returning veterans are entering the job market, and many will consider a
career in policing. Veterans typically possess many character traits and skills that
translate well to policing (e.g., a sense of service and commitment, an understanding
of the chain of command, good order and discipline, the ability to work in extremely
stressful situations). No doubt, many with military experience will make excellent
police officers, and agencies are already making special efforts to hire them.
However, veterans bring with them their own unique personnel challenges
that may affect agencies well into the future. Some who saw action will no doubt
suffer from PTSD, which could negatively affect their personal lives and job
performance for many years (see Section 3.4.3: Combat and Trauma-Related
Issues).
Additionally, many agencies are carving out special exceptions to their
hiring policies to accommodate veterans. Recently, the Philadelphia Police Department raised its educational standards to 60 college credits for new hires but
will waive that requirement for veterans. Some experts worry that this will create a
“dual culture” within agencies, with as yet unforeseen consequences (Joyce, 2012).
For example, will veterans with fewer educational credits be less competitive in the
promotional process? There are steps that police leaders can take to anticipate and
ameliorate these challenges; with regard to the previous example, management
could encourage officers to take full advantage of their GI Bill of Rights educational
benefits and provide a work environment that accommodates and promotes
scholastic achievement.

”””””””””Veterans are currently returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Many of them are reservists who previously served as public safety professionals;
additionally, many former military personnel will inevitably enter policing in the
next several years. While most service members readjust well once they have
returned home, a certain percentage do not. Some combat-related issues, such as
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), may not show themselves for years.
