Kevin Andrews determined to attend “Conference of Hate”

August 26, 2014

87bc8_494497

A stridently anti-gay, anti-abortion network is struggling to find a place to meet in Melbourne this weekend, since its conference venues keep cancelling.

The World Congress of Families conference is organised by a far-right group of speakers who sympathise with Russia’s recent laws against ‘gay propaganda’, and believe all forms of non-heterosexual sex are sinful and gay people should be converted to heterosexuality via Christian therapy.

The sole purpose of sex is for procreation and an expression of love between husband and wife in the covenant of marriage,” the World Congress of Families believes. “All other sexual activity cannot satisfy the human spirit and leads to remorse, alienation and disease.”

Since it was announced a few weeks ago, the conference has been besieged by drama caused by concerned members of the community who don’t want it to go ahead.

Minister for Employment Eric Abetz was originally on the speakers’ line-up but has pulled out, though the Federal Minister for Social Services Kevin Andrews is still scheduled to give the opening address, and also involved is virulently anti-gay and anti-abortion parliamentary crusaders Bernie Finn, Fred Nile and Cory Bernardi. Victoria’s right wing Attorney-General Robert Clark is also on board.

After two venue changes so far, the Conference is now scheduled to happen at Brunswick’s Aurora Receptions on Saturday 30 August, though The Gutter Trash understands that the management of the venue is now considering cancelling the booking.

Kevin Andrews has refused to cancel his planned attendance at the conference which has been linked to harassment, prosecution and murder of gay people worldwide.

Sydney MP Alex Greenwich has today sent a letter to Mr Andrews, asking him to cancel his appearance.

“Your attendance and endorsement of the WCF conference risks embarrassing Australia’s human rights record and is in direct contradiction of the work done by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in counties such as Uganda, Nigeria, and Russia to support their LGBTI citizens and advocate for fairer laws”, MR Greenwich wrote to Mr Andrews.

“The World Congress of Families supports a narrow and discriminatory definition of families, your attendance and support of them risks condoning their exportation of anti-LGBTI bigotry, ideology and legislation abroad”

A spokesman for Mr Andrews today told The Gutter Trash that the Minister will still attend the conference because it is about families, which relates to his portfolio, and that Mr Andrews’ attendance at the conference does not necessarily mean he supports the views of all its speakers.

The so-called World Congress of Families today named Mr Andrews, as its 2014 “Natural Family Man of the Year”.

The conservative christian group gave the equivalent award for women to the Nigerian activist Theresa Okafor, a vocal supporter of that country’s tough anti-gay laws, which make same-sex relationships punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

As opposed to his own anti-Religious bigotry of course.

The Left just hate opposing views to them.

Let these people have their Conference or is the Left just dead against Free Speech ?

If we are going to allow Islamic Clerics to teach “Death to Infidel” stuff in their Friday preachings than why get so upset about these WCF people ?

The average Lakemba bookstore is far more vicious in its teachings than anything found at a WCF meet.

Besides I don’t think followers of ISIS et al exactly have a warm spot for gays, abortion or just women in general

The likes of Andrews, Bernardi et al nailing their flags to this mast so publically is great because it exposes their religious conservative nutjob underbelly for all to see.

    ISIS are religious conservatives too.

    Let the games begin…

For any WCF-related people reading this : You have nothing to fear : We oppose violence in all of its forms. We are, in fact, against your organisation precisely because your policies and actions in the USA, Russia and many other countries result in violence against LGBTI people and women. As you may be gathering, your words and actions of hatred are not welcome in this country, and you do not have the right to speak unopposed. You will, in fact, not speak unopposed.

  23. August 27, 2014 1:33 am

    Resistance is futile…

This is a serious hate group. The great problem I see here is sanctioned Radicalisation. Just as radical Muslim fundamentalists are dangerous, so to are christian fundamentalist radicals.
Members of this government empowering this group with sanctioned association is not only offensive its dangerous and socially divisive.

I have no problem with religious freedom and free speech. I have a huge problem with hate speech, misinformation and radicalism sanctioned by this government and endorsed by a federal minister who it would seem is crowned their poster boy.Free speech and exchange of ideas is healthy in a progressive society, however when a group with such regressive and erroneous principals is given tacit approval and access to ministerial association its is highly improper and must not go unchallenged.

There were only 6 boat people in detention in 2007. The detention center network only cost $140M/year in 2007 and that includes everyone (visa overstayers, illegal immigrants whatever)

This is what the ALP built from 2007-2013

Curtin (near Derby, WA, reopened in 2010)
Scherger (near Weipa, Queensland, established in 2010)

As we are only a year down the track he has little to show, but in a couple of years the infrastructure PM should be doing well in the polls.

‘What are his enduring intellectual and affable attributes?’

A majority of Australians think Abbott is visionary, which doesn’t necessarily place him amongst the intelligentsia.

    ‘Is he a good PM?’

There have been mistakes made, its a novice government doing the hard yards early. Still has to prove himself.

See as a Centrist I am magnanimously offended by that statement which just goes to prove he does not get that it is highly inappropriate for a minister to address that group, which is just as radical as the most extreme muslum, neonazi or other hate group…Just branded differently. I am an advocate of free speech (something libertarians have hijacked for hate) but when you assume high office you have an obligation to the wider community, including those who did not vote for you. That statement goes as evidentiary proof that the core of this ministry in this dysfunctional government are incapable of governing for the majority without the imposition of their undisclosed extremist, neocon religious zealot moralist ideology, rebranded as moderate before the election… The sooner the Liberal party has an internal revolt and reclaims liberalism from the teabaggers, who have hijacked the party the better Australia will be… No Surprises aye? ‘You keep bringing up things i have almost never heard about.’

Then take the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about.

‘Christian Snippets Australia warned NSW lawmakers that the fires had been ‘a final attempt to avoid the foreboding disasters that God will bring down upon your own head, and upon the heads of many others, should this Bill be passed.’

‘The new funding arrangement is not just for Christian chaplains – other faiths are also included.

er … why should ANY faiths be included? State schools are non secular … if parents want a religious education for their children there are religious schools and/or Sunday schools …

The “chaplains” are there for one reason and one reason only!

And I have seen them in action … last Christmas (there’s two of ’em at my grandchildren’s primary school) … preaching and sermonising … back to the 1950’s …

… were it not for the kids they would have got an earful from me … as it was my daughter advised the Principal of what some of the parents/g/parents had said …

I agree, but high school chaplains might be worthwhile, a chance to debate theology and fairy tales.

Better to have the ‘good’ kind of sex education
in schools, the one the priests like to give!

I’m becoming quite depressed … and then I think of the Abbott government the government that keeps on giving laughs …

“Let me repeat” … LOL! Ignoramus plus … sensitivity nil … empathy blackout … gaffe knockout!

Launching an exhibition at the National Museum on Friday, Abbott’s comments weren’t going to go unnoticed when he repeated the line that has earned swift condemnation.

“The First Fleet was the defining moment in the history of this continent,” he said.

“Let me repeat that, it was the defining moment in the history of this continent. It was the moment this continent became part of the modern world.”
