Abbott Vows “Shirtfront” Showdown with Vladimir Putin

October 14, 2014

BzzvnBVCEAAWDZ5

Australia’s tough-talking Prime Minister and self-declared Captain of “Team Australia” Tony Abbott, has vowed to “shirtfront” (whatever that is) Russian President Vladimir Putin at the next G2) Summit the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17.

Abbott issued the dire warning on national television, vowing that when Mr Putin visits Australia as a guest at the summit next he month, he can expect a diplomatic showdown that will be the Russian president’s “toughest conversation of all”.

“I am going to shirtfront Mr Putin – you bet we are – you bet I am – I am – I am – I am going to be saying to Mr Putin  – Australians were murdered,  – they were murdered by – murdered by – Russian backed – Russian backed rebels,” Mr Abbott said.

“SHIRTFRONT” – WHAT EVEN IS THAT?

A guide to the Shirtfront – what Tony Abbott has vowed to do to Vladimir Putin

The government has confirmed Putin will be attending the world summit in Brisbane after G20 countries agreed “by consensus” that Russia should not be sidelined.

It is alleged Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in July by Russian-backed rebels, killing all 298 passengers and crew, including 38 Australian citizens and residents.

Mr Abbott said while Australia was the temporary president of the G20, it could not make unilateral decisions on behalf of the body.

“It has to be by consensus and the G20 consensus is that Russia should come,” Abbott said. “I think there will be a lot of tough conversations with Russia and I suspect the conversation I have with Mr Putin will be the toughest conversation of all.

The opposition leader, Bill Shorten, acknowledged Australia had no control over the invitation list but took a swipe at the government for “laying out the red carpet”.

He also accused Mr Putin of knowing “more about what happened with MH17 than he’s let on”.

“It’s an international conference, not a conference run by Australia, so if Putin has the arrogance to turn up to visit a nation whose nationals died in this plane crash, he can,” Shorten said.

NO RED CARPET FOR BULLIES!

“But I am like most Australians, I wish that Putin would at least show enough conscience to be able to not come to Australia, because he’s rubbing our faces in it.”

“Also what I happen to think is that when you deal with international bullies, the way you do it isn’t by laying out the red carpet.”

Neither Bill Shorten or Tony Abbott would be drawn on the question of whether Mr Putin was “a baddie,” but a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s office told The Gutter Trash, that “Most bullies are baddies, so by inference yes he could be a baddie but you didn’t hear it from us.”

Abbott’s image is just as carefully cultivated, which is why the ‘shirtfront’ comment was even made. He also has a habit of saying completely different and opposing things to different audiences. He says what he thinks they want to hear and then moves on to the next thing, knowing he won’t be taken to account for his duplicity.

    Electricity Reforms

The Government has passed the Electricity Competition and Protection Legislation Amendment Act 2014. The Act opens up the market to more competition, removes retail price regulation in south east Queensland, improves consumer protections and will see the implementation of a more effective market monitoring regime for small business customers. The aim of this legislation is to put downward pressure on electricity prices for Queenslanders.

I also notice that Abbott’s online pom-pom girls are bluntly accusing Putin of responsibility for MH17. As far as I know, nothing is proven yet (no matter how likely it is); so reserving judgement would seem the more prudent way to run their mouth.

I’m mostly enjoying the MSM’s performance at that moment. Given robust, very robust, strong, very strong, general, very general allegations in public, very public, there’s no need to bet that any of the esteemed Fourth Estate have enquired more closely how Captain Cavalier’s Team Australia specifically intends to proceed via any of the robust formal fora and strong mechanisms at law available, and sufficiently available from the MSM’s recent institutional memory to sustain a smidgin of relevant enquiry, for securing actual justice on behalf of the many actual victims and their families. From a war crime to a crime, from vigorously prosecuting the matter at the highest level to shirtfronting on the sidelines of an economic soiree, might be construed less as a subtle shift in language and locale and more as characteristic cheaptalk; or might even be construed as a significant retreat on the substance of substantive action, and a failure to safeguard legitimate interests; hard to tell from latest reports and follow-up of account(abilitie)s. Perhaps.)

One effect of Abbott’s shirt-fronting comment is that Putin will be less likely to be co-operating with any international inquiry or paying any compensation. But given Russia’s blatant disregard of international law in its actions in Ukraine and Georgia, that was never going to happen any way.

Putin has built his power on populist nationalism and rightly calculated that the West has neither the will nor the ability to curtail his ambitions. Provided he is not too hamfisted about them and maintains some vestige of plausible deniability he will be able to ‘protect’ the interests of all Russians in the region.

I have about 70+ death metal shirts.

Needless to say, they are far , far , FAR worse than anything Woolworths ever dreamt of flogging.

I was diagnosed with – De Quervain’s Stenosing Tenosynovitis last week … driving me up the wall … have to wait till 30/10 to get a steroid injection …

    First “hint” – 30/06!

    You’d be horrified!

Ah, I’ve had carpal tunnel before. That really sucked. More of a ‘strange, unsettling discomfort’ than a pain.

    Is it similar?

I got it from a very repetitive task on a production line 15+ years ago. It abated. No longer doing the mind numbing job helped too.

LOL! Have to use one hand to do everything! LIke using my cameras … 😉

    Is it similar?

I’d say no …. Toillette, I described it to the docs as being whacked around my wrist with a really sharp rubber band … “yep, that’s it”, they said … the real problem is that I can pick something up and its OK … next tie I do it I get the rubber band … just no predicting when or where … and it can be the slightest movement!

Sleeping has been a bugger too … just rolling over can get me a whack!

Anyway … I see the editor in chief has found my photo …

Daily politics is often little more than theatre designed to distract us from the real issues of the day. Because parochial politicians have little power or willingness to challenge the fundamentals of our world – mass surveillance, vulture capitalism and endless war against ever-changing enemies – they prefer playing verbal games in futile attempts to protect us from the vagaries and unpredictability of the outside world. They fail because they benefit too much by maintaining the existing, unequal economic order.

So which is the reliable media outlet?

    News reports –

INDEPENDENT investigators could soon be at the scene of the MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine after foreign minister Julie Bishop had a “constructive” discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    While Fairfax reports –

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop appears to have missed an opportunity to “shirt-front” Vladimir Putin over Russia’s role in the MH17 tragedy.

    Fairfax publishes rags these days.
