Fear of Terrorism Doubles in Ten Years

June 17, 2015

200774-e3476622-baf1-11e4-a901-79cc3d20af7b

The number of Australians fearful of a terrorist threat on Australian soil has increased by 100% in the past ten years.

According to the Lowy Institute, a new survey released this week shows that the number of Australians feeling afraid of a terrorist attack has jumped from 8 per cent in 2005 to 19 per cent in 2015.

The Institute speculated that three top reasons for anxiety among those polled were the Islamic State jihadist group (ISIL) in Iraq and Syria, terrorist attacks on Australian citizens overseas and local terrorism.

However the language used by the Prime Minister and other government ministers has come in for criticism particularly with PM Tony Abbott aiming to resurrect his declining popularity by harnessing the fear of a terrorist threat and spruiking the government’s hard line on issues of national security and border protection.

Tony Abbott has deliberately and systematically fostered community fears linking asylum seekers with terrorists, and employing ramped up terminology to create an elevated sense of fear, foreboding and hysteria.

For example, according to figures released by Fairfax, Tony Abbott has used the term “Death Cult”  346 times since September in Federal Parliament, press releases, interviews, transcripts and videos.

Hass Dellal, Executive Director of the Australian Multicultural Foundation said certain language used to describe terrorism can be counter-productive and cause anxiety and division.

Nick O’Brien, the former head of International Counter Terrorism in Special Branch at New Scotland Yard and an academic at Charles Sturt University, said it was important to examine the terms being used for Islamic State because the messaging needed to be consistent.

He said Mr Abbott’s repetitive use of “death cult” added to the confusing labels that muddle the message about Islamic State.

“He seems to be the only world leader that uses this phrase. The Brits certainly don’t use it, the Americans adopted a policy of using ISIL,” he said.

“A lot of people don’t know exactly what he’s referring to.”

With many Australian unsure who or what the so-called “Death Cult” actually is, the Prime Minister is pinning his hopes on resuscitating his fledgling popularity on the back of fear an scaremongering in the hope that voters will buy into his pledge to do “whatever it takes to keep you safe.”

However it appears that many Australians have simply tuned out or turned off.

Yes Muslim extremism has nothing to do with Islam which is a peaceful religion provided you submit to it or you will die.

Yep………….pretty much same as Islam teaches……………but you have died by natural or accidental causes. Not by being murdered.

    Subtle difference dont you think?

Well I suppose you could say that Iran treats its Gays pretty well in that case…….It’s a faster ending than being bashed to death I s’pose

TONY Abbott has momentarily put aside political slogans about boats and trousering for something more reverent.

THE prime minister was preaching to the converted at the inaugural interfaith parliamentary prayer breakfast in Canberra on Wednesday, telling a room of religious leaders and other politicians that believing in something greater than ourselves made us better people.

    FUCKING HYPOCRITE!

Yep i agree you are dishonest TB. How many lives do you think you have destroyed by your vote in 2007??

    5,000, 10,000 who knows.

Lots of people stuck in UNHCR camps because you voted for Rudd in 2007, replaced by economic refugees with $10,000.

Politicians extolling their ‘faith’ make me fucking sick.

And, once again, pretending that Islam, in its entirety, is nothing but ‘extremist’ is patent bullshit.

    Hilarious……………..absolutely fucking hilarious !

It is, isn’t it. A story with absolutely no substance being transposed throughout all the media players.

    Hilarious……………..absolutely fucking hilarious !

Meanwhile, these same muppets, who yesterday were crying that Labor didn’t pursue the payments for people smuggling, are crying because today they are.

    Hilarious……………..absolutely fucking hilarious !

    “reb did !”

I kinda saw reb’s comment as providing sarcastic contrast to your initial generalist demonization of Islam, personally.

ie. …”Yes Muslim extremism has nothing to do with Islam which is a peaceful religion provided you submit to it or you will die.”…which can’t be really read any way other than ‘All Islam Is Extremist’ (which is false).

  18. June 17, 2015 4:05 pm

I accept that you were probably just being sarcastic too.

During Abbott Govt “stop the boats” policy, more than 1050 refugees have died at sea in 2015

And how many drowned trying to get to Australia since Abbott was elected?

And how many people drowned trying to get to Australia when ALP/Greens were encouraging people to make the trip to Australia from 2007-2013?

We have absolutely no idea. We know that at least 3 have been killed by our hand though.

We also know that deaths at sea have increased since yabot started paying people to smuggle them back to who knows where.

The last lot were lucky to survive. Their boat broke up, and most swam to shore. others had to be rescued from the wreck. And that was directly from our hand.

I notice Kneel’s use of adjectival phrases hasn’t improved much – too ,much repetition – … and exams are on right now … I can see an F coming up for English and Political Science …

wow, yabots just jumped the shark I think.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has accused Labor of “rolling out the red carpet for terrorists” for voicing concerns about the constitutionality of the government’s controversial plan to strip suspected terrorists of their citizenship.

    http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/tony-abbott-says-labor-concerns-about-citizenship-stripping-rolling-out-the-red-carpet-for-terrorists-20150618-ghqyf2.html

So even having a debate is out of the question now?

So how many people do ya’ll know who express fear of terrorists in Australia?

Does anyone really believe that all the silly new LIBERAL/LABOR COALITION “anti terror” laws will stop another Monis (would they have stopped him?) or will they do more damage to our personal freedoms … ?

  29. June 18, 2015 5:29 pm

I think the answer to that is painfully obvious, TB.

  30. June 18, 2015 5:32 pm

And Abbott’s ‘rolling out the red carpet’ is just rank hyperbole, trying to wedge the ALP & rush through his belligerent, ill conceived violation of the separation of powers with impunity. FFS, it seems even some of his own cabinet are appalled by giving a Minister such power with no genuine oversight or accountability.

And while Dutton isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer … who to say that down the track … the next one (they seem to change ministries more than their socks) is just as sharp as a marble …

I only know one minister I’d trust to make decisions that were intelligent, fair, logical, reasonable, caring and understanding, based upon an abundance of life and work experience … and luckily I married, The Minister for War, Water, Finance & Fun, quite a few years ago … 🙂
