New Zealand is a happier country than Australia
Australia has been ranked 9th place in the 2017 World Happiness Report, behind New Zealand (8th) and Canada (7th), but ahead of Sweden at number 10. It’s the same spot Australia occupied in last year’s report.
The ranking is based on answers to a simple life evaluation question developed decades ago by a social scientist and posed to people around the world between 2014 and 2016 by Gallup, the polling organisation:
“Please imagine a ladder, with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top. The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?”
Humanity is about halfway up the ladder, with an average global score of 5.3, based on hundreds of thousands of surveys conducted by Gallup over those years. The top five countries – Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and Finland – all have scores just above or below 7.5. The Central African Republic’s score is nearly 2.7.
The authors found that three-quarters of the variation among countries can be explained by six economic and social factors: gross domestic product per capita (a basic measure of national wealth); healthy years of life expectancy; social support (having someone to rely on during times of trouble); trust (a perceived absence of corruption in government and business); the perceived freedom to make life choices; and generosity (measured by donations).

Israel is happier than Austria and Germany. That’s interesting.
What’s Yemen got to be so unhappy about?

Why is Syria so unhappy ?

It seems that western societies with a higher per capita income are happier!!
How surprising
It seems that European countries with more social equity, along with more equal wealth distribution and social policies benefitting all citizens, rather than outright capitalism, are the most happiest, occupying the top 6.
Apparently the so called basket case of the EU is not as bad as we are led to believe.
How surprising !!
Maybe Shane. The difference is marginal but the clear difference is that developed western countries are much happier than those that aren’t
In a group of 155 coming 9th is a pretty good level of happiness.
I think this is the full list. It demonstrates that people are happier in societies that are tolerant, which is unsurprising.
Western values tend to be more inclusive and tolerant.

New Zealand is a happier country than Australia
Obviously because they have a Liberal government … shimples! 😉
It seems that western societies with a higher per capita income are happier!!
They are also quite often not being bombed the crap out of by drones.
Perhaps if you have a look at the full list of the 155 countries you’ll observe that there’s some relationship between wesrern values, affluence and happiness.
ToM
I agree with the western values, affluence and happiness I was simply pointing out that those who share those values with us, but also have social aspects to their communities are even happier, while we offload any social policies and public ownership as fast as a bullet, especially by the LNP, while we load up on USA style capitalism. So lets see how happy we all are in 10 more years time of privatisation, big business tax cuts and welfare and pensioner trashing.
but also have social aspects to their communities are even happier
I was simply having a childish dig at our own man of the world 😉
… wesrern …
Let me guess $200 bottle of Shiraz?
OK, the keys are next to each other …
I think you meant, Western.
Just what are Western “values” …
Perhaps if we stopped invading other people’s countries to spread our Western values we might be able to get on being “happy” with them … rifles eventually become very heavy!
Here’s a little education for you TB…

big business tax cuts and welfare and pensioner trashing.
I would be happier if you stopped telling lies Shane. The first tax cuts are to small business like pubs, clubs, takeaway stores to help them employ some of the people who lost their jobs under Rudd/Gillard.
Venezuela comes 82nd. If only we’d listened to the left and adopted their model for success.
Here’s a little education for you TB…
Here’s a little edification back … you talked about “values” … I’m pretty well educated in Western Culture … having lived in three countries … and visited quite a few …
Values?
Note: If you weren’t such a cocksure … you would fare much better in the real Western world … the stately homes in England just get by or are crumbling II get you fancy yourself as the 21st Century lord) … pity they were built on the deaths of nine year old children in fields and mines … a bit like those magnificent cathedrals – built over decades as the to the poor starved to death …
Now what is YOUR version of Western Values?
I’m more of a glass half full type TB.
I think most people are tolerant and have a sense of basic fairness and compassion. That’s why the people are happier in western societies.
And by the way TB, I’ve faired quite well
A friend of mine is from Venezuela.
I call her Miss Venezuela as she’s quite attractive and very funny.
When I asked her about whether she feels safe what with Melbourne’s increasing crime rate she simply said: “Honey, I’m from Venezuela”.
Miss Venezuela sounds nice… “Honey…” that sounds friendly!
She is friendly and hilarious, but she’s no Fifi or Lulu…
#justsayin’
Maybe not!!

“Fifi and Lulu the London Zoo’s three year old Chimpanzees are encouraged to blow”
No words.
Yes. It’s such a coincidence.
My Fifi and Lulu enjoy the same activites in the dance studio.
If you say so. 😯
How good is affogato. There is no better dessert.
I prefer it separated. The Frangelico hazelnut liquor, espresso and ice cream. It seems a waste to put it all together
You’re such a typical pretentious Melbourne inner city I don’t know what but I’ll settle for ‘mother fucker.’
Is that what were calling a ‘deconstructed’ affogato is it?
FFS. It’s all going to end up in the same place ain’t it?
Fkn tossers.

of course, that all started with a false assertion.
And by the way TB, I’ve faired quite well
More edification … I think you meant fared … and BTW I too have fared well … but I feel for people who get screwed trying!
How good is affogato. There is no better dessert.
LOL! WE agree .. The Minister asked today if we could make affogato for 40+ guests (family celebration coming up) …
I serve it “separated” … allows guests to experiment (as you obviously do) … in three types of glass … coffee in double walled of course … mmmm … always been a “killer” dessert in the TB home …
Restaurants rarely get it right tho’ … and so simple …
I am such a bogan, what the hell is affogato, Ok I looked it up. Really !!!!! a scoop of icecream, a shot of coffee and some liqueur ?. That is the best dessert ? and why on earth these days do we want to deconstruct something. If you deconstruct it are you then not simply eating the ingredients separately. Maybe we should deconstruct a cake. You know have a spoon of flour, then a spoon of sugar, have a teaspoon of butter, a raw egg, cream them all on your mouth and shove your head in the oven to bake. 🙂
Home made golden syrup pudding with home made custard from farm fresh eggs on a cold rainy winters day ( the weather Reb and ToM are now very used to). Nothing deconstructed. Comfort food not anxiety inducing food.
“”I am such a bogan””
Well you are from QLD. It’s kind of a given.
I serve it “separated”
And I here I was thinking you’d be more of a blancmange kind of person.
