Honey, we stuffed the Economy.

May 17, 2017

site_197_Polish_660987

There’s an almost endless list of examples you can point to as evidence of the Coalition’s abject incompetence since claiming the adults were in back in charge, however none will come close to slapping the banks with a debt levy.

While on the surface, it may seem like a “good thing” given that so many of us have a “hate-hate” relationship with the Big Four and their cartel-like behaviour in shifting interest rates to whatever flight or fancy takes their whim, however the stark reality is that, as past behaviour attests, they’ll simply shift the costs of the bank levy onto the consumer – you and I.

So expect interest rates to rise in direct correlation to the financial impost they will incur as the bank levy invariably passes through the Senate.

And this will simply send the economy into a downward spiral. Households will be forced to cut back on retail spending, which will see the economy contract. This will spur business owners into further pleas for more wage cuts sorry, I mean “workplace flexibility” (in addition to the recent penalty rates cuts), which will curtail retail spending further when those employees can no longer afford life’s basic necessities.

Recent stats show that 1 in 5 households are already in mortgage stress. So there’s going to be carnage when interest rates inevitably head northwards.

The Coalition squibbed the opportunity to do anything about housing affordability in the recent budget. Now they’ve gone and done the unthinkable – they’ve actually pulled the trigger on the very thing that’s going to propel interest rates higher.

But of course, if you own your own harbourside mansion at Point Piper debt-free, then you’ll be completely unaffected, while the banks continue to reap billion dollar profits and are set to receive a multi-billion dollar handout for their trouble.

Perhaps that was the idea all along.

    Insightful take, sreb …

But the ephelant* in the kitchen is that 96% of pollies own negatively geared property! (Not including their wives, partners and concubines) …

The Bank Levy was just another cynical political cheat! To avoid a Royal Commission!

You can’t have it both ways … either they are the better economic managers than anybody and KNEW the consequences of their decision …

… OR they’re just a bunch of INCOMPETENT Dickwits©! Who need to find a real job – preferably in the Cayman Islands!

And to flog the uni students again is just plain stupid – do the LNP want uni students to vote ALP for the rest of their lives? Dumb!

Do the LNP want the country to deteriorate even further economically? Morons

Do the LNP expect BIG Business and Banks to prop up society? Ignoramous

Do the LNP expect that Revenue will just appear by employing 457 Visas? Stupid is …

This bank levy sound like something the ALP would do. Seems like socialists have won. Sucking money from people through taxation means people have less money to spend and a person spending money will create more jobs than a govt spending the same amount of money

Except of course, that’s patently wrong, because, they didn’t.

They taxed where the ones paying it would pay it, not the worker.

I did hear they will pass it through, just so it will be clear that the libs are doing what they always do, loading the public up with Government debt

    Uni students pay
    mortgage holders pay
Internet connections pay (for malwares bastardy)
And every worker pays for an NDIS that was already paid for.

It isLabor that loads up govt debt. By the way we are doomed. We need spending cuts not tax increases. It looks like the Coalition has given up and proposed a budget the Senate may pass. The current forecast is for a surplus in several years time. I will believe it when i see it.

But it shows how great Howard/Costello were. They were handed a totally trashed budget from Keating and produced a surplus budget within 12 months with unemployment at 7-8% and economic conditions similar to when Labor were running deficit budgets

Between January 2011 and February 2013 there were 4,313 incidents of actual, threatened and attempted serious self-harm recorded in immigration detention facilities in Australia.[73] In the 2012–2013 financial year there were 846 incidents of self-harm across the immigration detention network.[74]

Bernie Sanders supporters are suing on behalf of a potentially immense class of donors and party members, and claim that the DNC charter requires the chairman to “exercise impartiality and evenhandedness as between the presidential candidates and campaigns.”

But which is the real position of the Democratic Party? Should we buy their public rhetoric that they are establishing a fair process to include everyone and prevent abuses? Or should we believe what they say under penalty of perjury, that their rules are non-binding and party officials are always free to go back to business as usual?

Democrats use them to wriggle out of paying staff the way the party insists other employers should pay theirs. From one side of its mouth the party talks like a predatory, pin-striped employer, and from the other, it denounces businesses and Republicans if they object to their hypocritical version of “economic justice.”

As he continues to lift in the polls, Bill Shorten’s going to start promising us he won’t restart the boats, but being soft on immigration is in Labor’s DNA. ………Kevin from Queensland got in and thought he could get away with dismantling the Coalition’s tough border protection policies to win friends in inner-city latte land but the people-smugglers had other ideas. Almost immediately their trade started up again and as I watched them from opposition, Labor was utterly powerless to stop it. The Rudd-Gillard-Rudd record of chaos must not be forgotten: 800 boats, 50,000 illegal arrivals, 17 new detention centres, 8000 children in detention and 1200 deaths at sea (that we know about).

“That was then, this is now,” Bill Shorten will say.

    Don’t be fooled.

Some of you might look at Chris Bowen and see a man trying hard to be a credible shadow treasurer but I see the man whose record as immigration minister should disqualify him from any future office. Under Julia Gillard, 398 boats and 24,447 people arrived on Mr Bowen’s watch; the worst record of any immigration minister in Australian history. Hapless, reckless and completely inept; is it any wonder people are worried what he would do to the economy if this was his previous ministerial effort?

A new analysis of the combined impact of the Turnbull government’s budget measures suggests women earning below-average wages could be hit with effective marginal tax rates of 100%.

A study of budget initiatives by the National Foundation for Australian Women, to be released on Monday, says a combination of an increase in the Medicare levy, the freezing of family tax benefit rates and earlier repayment requirements for student loans “are particularly harsh for women”.

The study notes the proposed increase in the Medicare levy will affect women on incomes greater than $21,644 and, for women who are eligible to receive family tax benefit part A, the rates are frozen for two years.

“Those who pay childcare fees will continue to face high effective marginal tax rates,” the report says. “University graduates will start repaying loans when they reach income levels of $42,000 per year.

“These changes hit those on earning well below the average wage and are particularly harsh for women.

The pass on the levy to consumers (taxpayers). So it costs them nothing.

Yet they claim that as a tax deduction. Which means, they make that money, paid for, AGAIN, by the taxpayer

So, the taxpayer is basically paying this levy twice, for no change to the budget bottom line, and a feathering of the banks nest?

Just caught the arse-end of qandaland, this Ruski dude has the best explainer of the-ronald and so-called democracy`s l`ve seen/heard for quite a while.

Qandaland/MIKHAIL ZYGAR,,,,,You know, I can say that people… all the people are afraid of having no alternative, that they have no… They cannot participate and they cannot affect… influence their future. I think that’s the problem, not only for Russia. That’s the problem for a lot of countries in the world. And… When I was speaking about Russian propaganda, I can tell that it has changed a lot during the last few years.

And the current main message of Russian propaganda is not that we are the best and that… let’s say, America, is our enemy. No! The new message is that we’re all the same. We’re… They are the same dirty bastards as we are. They are as corrupted, all the elections in the world are fraud. All the policemen are brutally killing innocent people.

All the politicians are corrupted; look at the Panama Papers. Democracy does not exist. All the liberal values, that’s all bullshit. That does not exist. And I think a lot of people in Russia really believe that that’s true. There is no point in looking for any alternative. No other… There is no alternative. No other future. And I’m afraid not only Russians believe in that. When we see… Trump triumph in America that’s probably… probably that means that a lot of people in the United States do not believe in that democracy, in that liberal values.

When a lot of people in Europe are voting for extremists, they are not… They’re doing that not because of Putin has brainwashed them. No! Because they do not believe in progress. There is no progress in which we used to believe in for decades. Nothing is… If nothing is better in the way it should be, it means the model is wrong.

We have political leaders around the world condemning the attack, yet complete and utter silence from the Muslim world.

Where are all the Muslim countries leaders condemning the attack, where are all the Mufti’s condemning the attack. Where is the call to attack this extremism at the source, the extreme leaders preaching division and hatred.

I also agree that we now have to have an honest conversation about this.

The entire muslim community will suffer more for the actions of a few, for simply not speaking out themselves and that is their choice not the terrorists choice. If they choose to remain silent then they deserve the ramifications of their own inaction and condemnation.

    Disgusting!!!!

The online editor of conservative publication Quadrant has said it would have been preferable for the Manchester bomb to be exploded in the ABC’s Q&A studios on Monday night, blowing up host Tony Jones and the panellists.

“This morning, mere hours after Jones’ guests pocketed their ABC taxi vouchers and repaired to hotel rooms paid for with taxpayer dollars processed through the Sydney writers’ festival, mere children were torn to pieces on the other side of the world,” Roger Franklin wrote in a piece published online on Monday.

“Life isn’t fair and death less so. If there had been a shred of justice that blast would have detonated in an Ultimo TV studio. TR, I’m having trouble following your discussion could you clarify for me?

It has to do with a quote from the tweet thread above. It reads

“Whoever kills an innocent human being, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he saved the life of all mankind.”

    To which Shane replied with

“The recompense of those who fight Allah and His messenger, and seek to make corruption in the land, is that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from alternate sides or that they be banished from the land; that is their disgrace in this world and in the Hereafter they will have a great torment.” (Qur’an 5:33)

I simply pointed out that, I didn’t believe many of those young girls at the concert were engaged in a ‘fight’ with Allah.

Hell, the murderer would have no idea if any of the victims were even Muslim themselves.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending any religion, and, ALL religions have text that can be interpreted in many ways.

I’m pointing out that our media is shit, and have a chosen narrative they are pushing without getting both sides of the story

eg, they let jones crap on about “no Muslim leader condemning’ the attack”, when I showed several instances of that happening.

Did they correct the record? I don’t need to spend hours of my day watching vacuous ‘infotainment’ to know the answer to that.

Shane can confirm for me it seems. 😉

I also think the Muslim leaders need to do more than they do. Especially when you have powerful voices misinforming the public. I’d like to say from a position of ignorance, but I doubt that.

However, how many people have been killed in the name of radical Muslims over the last 15 years in comparison to radicals of any other religion or group around the world. We have a major problem. Just how many terrorist training camps around the world that are not Muslim do you know of?.

Powerful voices misinforming the public are from both sides including the Muslim leadership.

You seem to think the media would not broadcast Muslim Leaders standing up and condemning terrorist attacks. I think they would.

Muslim leaders need to take control and action on the radicals. They need to shun them and they need to stop pussyfooting around the edges simply because they are all Muslims.

In relation to ESSO and all the other arseholes isn’t it about time the ACTU did some advertising showing facts and figures and do it regularly. Out them on TV and Radio. The LNP might have trashed the unions and ripped out their teeth, but they cannot stop them from advertising. When the unions only put these things on their own website or publication they are preaching to the converted. They need to fight them at the media posts where most people watch and read and they need to do this to win over the retired as well who represent a major voting block.

Out them on TV and Radio.

You understand the media support the likes of ESSO. Thanks, TR … I tend to agree with BOTH points of view … but I have seen and heard some very strong action/words from the Islamic community in Manchester … last night’s 7:30 Report as an example …

I confess that I’ve fought the hypocrisy of christian religions since a little kid … and for good reason into my adulthood …

The West is now paying dearly for OIL … the current dramas were caused by the Gulf wars and of course a millennia of shoving the Middle East around …

And … as I have said in the past … we should never get involved in civil wars …

And the West have killed children … impossible to deny USA “collateral damage” … and “shock and awe” tactics …

What is disturbing is that the extremists seek asylum in the West and then attack the country that harboured them …

We cannot condemn all muslims, just as I cannot condemn all catholics … I don’t know them all … but the actions of so many make it difficult not to …

And finally … if our expert anti-terrorist organisations are doing so well … why do they “always” know about the terrorists “before” the event but can’t prevent the action?

The father of the Manchester bomber should have had red lights flashing all over him!

Labor IS the party of the Unions and they should be proud of that … people still have no idea of the effort that people took, for many years, to gain the benefits that workers now enjoy … but are slowly being whittled away …

Note: I was a metal trades union rep for a couple of years … and as a manager a member of the MTIA …

What utter garbage about the media with you stating they don’t want to help the Muslim cause. They are reporting violence and death and as such the cause of this violence and death is Islamic Extremists. Just as the media reported the IRA and their horrific actions.

Sunrise has no need to apologise or make a correction. They had two Muslim Leaders as guests who had radically differing opinions and amazingly the one who points out violence in the scriptures and advocates peace is spat on and abused when taken to western Sydney by channel 7 previously. Shows the peaceful nature of them doesn’t it.

Our polity is broken from our own personal actions.

No matter what your comments in relation to the unions and the media it does not stop the unions from advertising. Maybe they can ask members for a fighting fund like they have so many times before. I agree about TURC but unions need to either advertise and point out what is happening and what they are trying to defend or they will die. I am sure advertising on smaller radio stations and country areas are far cheaper than the cities and would be preaching to those who are not converted.

A little bit of social media is not the same as calling a TV Station or a Radio Station or a Main Stream Newspaper to vent your disgust and total opposition to the terrorist attack. Especially after you are challenged to do so. If I was a leader I would have contacted them all. I would have done everything to vent my disgust. I would have done all in my power to get my message of total opposition and anger to the community that is seething with hatred of these extremists. These are your exact words at 11.00am yesterday.

“At a time like this, ramping up prejudice is a terrible thing to be doing.”

So please explain to me how I am putting words I your mouth. That sentence in the context your wrote it could mean nothing else. Just in case it does mean something else please enlighten me.

    Drain

I am not oblivious to history, that does not excuse what is happening by extremists from one specific religion. You still did not provide any evidence of any terrorist training camps that are not muslim.

You paint the west as a horror fest of killers and murderers. The west also saved the Yazidi from total genocide, (just one example) they have also protected many minorities from the atrocities around the world.

Mistakes have been made and I have readily acknowledged them. Bush should never have invaded Iraq for a start.

Your comments seem to be making excuses for the existence of the camps.

What I am sick to death of is the total attack on the west. If our society is so bad, so terrible, so murderous, so despicable and so mean why do people flee to the West and not to these other countries. How many flee to the countries you have mentioned.

If there were Christian groups doing all of this I would be demanding the Pope condemn it immediately and call a press conference. You don’t need to be of the particular sect to condemn actions.

I can see from peoples comments who can actually see reason and between stories rather there own one sided political ideology viewed through stained glasses.

Shane, its neither here nor there that they are mooosies, we `teh-west` have created the trainy camps, proped up all the tyrants in the area, dumped the jews there to ease our conscience for ignoring the 1930s-40s genocide of jews, murdered their chosen leaders to replace with puppets, trampled and killed them during two of largely our world wars, and cheated them out of promises/deals for fighting with/for us; which has been `near` continual for the last 100-years. WE have ripped the corks out of so many bottles and have no hope in hell of stuffing all the genies back in. Yes, yes moosie is the rally-cry to attract the loose nuts; but if they were all christian; we would still have screwed them all and they would still have a `rally-cry`; just like ireland did; just like teh-usa did after 911 or pearl harbor. Take a look at saudi, one of the most brutal and unjust places, but as long as our team can keep getting their oil; and they keep buying up big our weapon; WE don`t make a squeak about them; even tho its the particular `flavor` of islam the tewwa is based-on.

And it is about time you apologised for the damage your vote in 2007 caused.

In 2005 we were debt free. By 2007 we had $44B in the kitty earning $1B/year. WE are now up to $390B of net debt costing is billions of dollars in interest mainly to overseas investors.

What a traitor to Australia you are.

So please explain to me how I am putting words I your mouth.

    Gladly 🙂

    You said
Asking for leaders to condemn terrorist atrocities in the name of their religion by extremists is ramping up prejudice ?

    I replied
No, stating that those leaders aren’t condemning terrorist atrocities when they quite obviously were and then refusing to set the record straight is ramping up prejudice.

There is a big difference from asking for them to say something, and outright proclaiming that they are silent (when they are not)

that does not excuse what is happening by extremists from one specific religion.

    I AGREE!

And once we acknowledge that they are extremists (and that EVERY ideology has them), then we can perhaps target the real problem, instead of laying at the feet of the particular ideology.

I mean, when Right Wing Dingbats go off the deep end and open fire (which they do with disturbing frequency), do we attack Right Wing Dingbats as a whole, or the Dingbat who went off the reservation?

But I AGREE!, the Muslim leadership NEED to be more pro-active.

AND, they were. We were just oblivious to it.

I lay the blame for that at the feet of the media, not the Religious leaders.

Has jones apologised for his slur yet?

Has nil apologised for taking up precious internet capacity?

FFS! Leave it alone … we spent 15 fkn years in Afghanistan an its still a basket case!

If politicians want to fight there … give ’em all a rifle and some grenades … and send their kids with them … read some history …

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-south-asia-12024253

Keep fighting in the Middle East and suffer the consequences here … and the rest of the Western world … THIS IS A RELIGIOUS CIVIL WAR … and these days there are alternative OIL supplies … give it a break FFS!

The shadow defence minister, Richard Marles, has signalled Labor would be open to increasing defence force numbers in Afghanistan if needed, as conditions on the ground deteriorate.

He says al-Qaida is increasing its presence in Afghanistan, Islamic State is playing a role, the country is experiencing an insurgency, and “we can’t afford to see Afghanistan lost”.

Marles said Labor had asked for a briefing from the government regarding last week’s request from US Pentagon officials for the Australian defence force to commit more troops to the troubled country.

The US request followed a recent Nato call for an increased contribution from Australia as part of a possible allied surge in Afghanistan, the Australian reported.

And finally … the way Trump has treated the PM and this country … fuck his “request”!

smh,,,,Game of Mates will convince you that seeking favours, be they planning approvals or the right to build casinos or toll roads, is what makes Australia go round. Certainly it makes Australia’s job market go round. Local council planners move into positions with developers, state and Commonwealth government ministers take up positions with companies they used to regulate and former Treasury officials sit on the boards of private banks. The book’s appendix on movements in and out of the offices of mining ministers is eye-popping,,,,

,,,,There are two implications. One is that Australia needn’t feel particularly worried about taxing billionaires. It doesn’t much stifle innovation. That’s not how Australian billionaires make their money,,,,

,,,,The other is that it that our high earners hurt us in ways that those in other better-run countries do not. They not only get ahead of others in the queue to build casinos and tunnels and the like; their lobbying can get casinos and tunnels and motorways built in the wrong place,,,,

At the time I said I had not heard any condemnation and that was true. I still completely disagree with your statement that this is the medias fault, I have no doubt whatsoever that if a Mufti rang channel 7 had said I have something to say, they would have flown there in their helicopter in 5 mins.

There are extremists in all religions, but at this moment in time the absolute majority of murderers, shooters, bombers, throat slashers and kidnappers are MUSLIM extremists. Therefore should we not attack the majority sources and be holding real discussions about why the majority are Muslims and this includes acknowledging when violence and discrimination is preached in this country by Muftis or Religious leaders.

    KL

Would expect nothing less than Sky News removing a poll which is not suitable to their ideological privatise and swallow up policy, despite it coming from their own audience. Shows that their audience prefer diversity and not manipulation.

Billionaires as a result of political connections just shows how corrupt and damaged our so called democracy has become as a result of the despicable duopoly we have.

#I do hope y’all copy Margaret Court and boycott Qantas due to its partnership with Emirates Airlines as well as Etihad Airlines since both are UAE Airlines ” # and according to Wiki

-Article 354 of the Federal Penal Code states, “Whoever commits rape on a female or sodomy with a male shall be punished by death.” While English translations of the Arabic text are in some dispute, it is generally felt that this is a prohibition against rape, and possibly consensual sodomy.

Mohammed bin Nukhaira Al Dhahiri, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Auqaf stated, “There will be no room for homosexual and queer acts in the UAE. Our society does not accept queer behaviour, either in word or in action”

In 2008, two lesbian tourists were given a one-month jail sentence and then deported for engaging in public displays of affection while visiting a beach.[9] The trial, reportedly the first of its kind, prompted the police to create a special task force to combat homosexuality and other “indecent acts” from taking place on the beaches.[10]

On 7 June 2012, a Belgian man admitted to police that he was in a homosexual relationship with a Filipino. He was arrested and jailed for a year to be followed by deportation.[16]

So if we change the name of Margaret Court Arena I guess y’all will support a name change for Etihad Stadium.

Anything other than that would make you a hypocrite wouldn’t it ?

So boycott Qantas just as Margaret is where possible

    # ,, there is NO brexit here; and our system doesn`t allow for `the-ronald` event; even when the voters select the team because they `really-like` the leader; the stupid grubs within the team will tear that leader down (kevin07) to then replace with somebody the voters really hate (jooLiar); the ONLY thing voters here can do is dump the duopoly on a seat-by seat basis and trying to label it as `populist` or other crap only shows how unhinged FakeNews really is.

teebz, seat-by seat basis is how our system works, and is meant to. The duopoly have (of-150-seats) 76(teabags) and 65?(blib) with the remaining handfull to indys and other teams. There is really no `populist-movement` in the popularity contest (which mostly is chosen by; who voters hate least) There really is bugger-all `likeness` between Aust and the-ronald, no matter how much fakenews squeals. Take a look at how teams and system work, braindead moonee fcuking ponds will vote for the alp `brand` no matter how much of a dud their-boy is nationwide (repeating the kim-beazley electorate); there will never be a `populist-movement` here.
