Turnbull’s Legacy will be sweet FA.

August 21, 2018

Jewellery Bishop arrives at Canberra disguised as Catwoman

It’s business as usual over at the LNP government and any talk of a leadership coup is pure speculation and practically non-existent.

That’s the message senior pollies at the Liberal Party would like us to believe if Scott Morrison’s performance on ABC’s 7:30 show is anything to go by who rejected claims of an all-out assault on Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership saying that “no one has called me about it.”

Josh Frydenberg has also thrown his support behind the PM as has Peter Dutton insisting that he won’t [personally] challenge Turnbull for the top job.

All three are considered leadership aspirants who would relish the opportunity to occupy the highest office in the land.

The not-so-silent assassin in all of this, former PM Tony “there will be no wrecking, back-grounding or sniping” Abbott is on a personal vendetta to destroy Malcolm Turnbull and backed with his conservative cronies – the likes of Kevin Andrews and Eric Abetz – they’re hell-bent on his success.

Whether or not Abbott is reinstated as leader of the Liberal Party is a moot point. The cabal will be happy if Peter Dutton is installed as he’ll basically do whatever they tell him anyway, and if recent history is anything to go by, Dutton isn’t afraid to take things even further to the far right; particularly in terms of national security and immigration, of which he has pretty much unfettered control and has already demonstrated his rabid right-wing credentials.

He’s pretty much the poster-boy for the right-wing nutter brigade.

Having abandoned every principle he once held, incumbent Prime Minister Turnbull’s leadership is in its final death throes and when the assassination is unleashed, as it most undoubtedly will, he’ll go down in history as one of Australia’s most ineffectual Prime Ministers.

A PM who dumped his passion for action on climate change, slapped the LGBT community in the face with his divisive plebiscite, and left us all with a less than third world internet service as his lasting legacy.

Thanks for nothing Talcum.

It could be worst, we could have the onion muncher back again 😦

If it is the potatoe, how do you force the pm to the High Court to evaluate his S44(?) issues lol

I agree they will roll on to electoral oblivion. They have lurched so far to the right and if they think installing Dutton would save them, then sadly they will be even worse. If I was a moderate I would be in panic with Turnbull but in absolute desperation with Dutton. The swinging voters are hating the lurch to the right, the inequality, the wage rises for the bosses and nothing for the worker, the tax cuts for comapnies of which 80% will go to overseas investors and do nothing regarding job creation. While people are worried about their electricity bills, they also now that it is a result of privatisation of our electricity assets which has resulted in this greed and profit. How about they actually ask the voters why they are voting a particular way and not rely on business telling them and assuming why a person is voting a particular way.

“hey also now that it is a result of privatisation of our electricity assets which has resulted in this greed and profit. ”

Garbage. But it is most probably what people believe. In SA Labor blew up Playford costing hundreds of jobs at Playford and the Leigh Creek coal mine supplying the coal. Then they had to lease diesel generators for $100M as a backup. And then had to build a new gas fired power station. Costs which increase electricity prices

In Victoria labor tripled the royalties on brown coal and then Hazlewood closed. labor hates coal and it is the cheapest form of electricity generation

Privatisation has nothing to do with rising electricity costs. It is ALL due to renewables

FFS Neil you are so blind . The retailers have increased the prices with AGL even stating it will take 20% proift minimum and put prices up to achieve this. WE have a daily availability charge that never existed before privatisation. It allows your bill to increase while the electricity price goes down. My kw price went down by 0.6c per kw while my daily availability charge increased by 1.815c which is more than 300% increase over the kw decrease. If it is not privatisation why is your mob getting ready to stare down and demand the private companies reduce prices or they will be broken up. By the way I will never respond to your comments on Guardian as you know and this is my final response to you here. You cannot comprehend anything other than what you want to absorb with you blind hatred and ideology. I have no doubt you must be related to Tony Abbott.

Dutton has always had Abbotts back not Turnbulls. Duttons appointment and growing power was a peace offering to the extreme right. Turnbull is damaged and walking dead. He should have had the balls to stand up for his convictions but somehow he gave away his integrity to the right simply to remain a lame duck PM.

Also Queensland still has coal fired power stations but Labor wants to get rid of our cheapest from of electricity generation.

If QLD got rid of their coal fired power stations they would have much higher electricity prices as well. Privatisation has NOTHING to do with our increasing electricity prices. It is all due to labors war on coal

One of the major costs in our electrcicity bills is the daily supply charge. It never existed before privatisation. So if you look at the areas with expensive kwh prices their supply charge is cheaper whereas where the kwh cost is lower their supply charges are more expensive.

Most probably never existed before State govts started pushing renewables down our throat. It was the solar energy rebates in NSW which caused a spike in electricity bills

Privatisation? South Australia no longer has ANY coal fired power stations to privatise. After getting rid of them SA had to lease diesel generators for $100M. Costs just added to the bill. Hundreds of people lost their jobs, govt lost revenue from coal mine royalties and tax from coal station workers

  19. Neil of Sydney permalink

Then why does SA have the highest electricity prices in the country? They have no coal fired generated electricity to gold plate.

Give it a miss. You should be like Churchill. Just say CO2 will destroy the planet so we have to pay higher prices for renewables.no matter the hardship

WE never had such price rises until govts started pushing renewables down our throats

Our job is to deliver for 25 million Australians.

That means doing everything we can to ensure their taxes are lower, their energy bills are lower, that the economy is growing and they have a better chance of getting a job.

It means ensuring we can invest more resources to spend on essential services like health and education and infrastructure.

Unity is critical. We cannot allow the risk that Bill Shorten would come in with higher taxes on everyone.

We’ve had record jobs growth and strong economic growth. We’ve reduced business taxes and personal taxes and spending on essential services is higher than ever.

That’s what we must deliver, united.

I totally agree if Peter Dutton is elected PM then they will lose even more seats at the next election. Peter Dutton is one of the Right Wing Extremists and as such he may get back the One Nation voters, but he will lose all the true swinging voters. So they will gain all the red necks that Abbott and Abetz and Joyce claim they talk to, but lose those who are middle of the road conservatives. I for one will be happy if he is elected PM because their demise will be almost certain. The moderates in the party must be shitting their pants.

    Completely agree Shane (and hello).

Also, regaining votes in QLD, from ON enthusiasts, is hardly a winning strategy nationally.

I actually don’t relish a landslide for the ALP, because that forebodes them implementing their agenda, unfettered, pising off the middle & re-opening the door for nutcase Trumpism.

I could give a fuck about ‘boat people’. They’re not the push button issue you imagine them to be in my life.

It’s just a sop to the (your) base, like abortion/ermergrants/muslims/socialists/fake news/witch hunt in the US.
My understanding of the world and my reactions to it are a bit broader than having my buttons pushed.
    Congratulations on being easily manipulated.

I’m more concerned about how the Business Lobby & its cohorts are going to try & fuck me hard where I work. The genuine threat to my livelihood.

I sort of understand. But ALP supporters look for charisma and sex appeal in a leader. Conservatives tend to look for a guy who can get the job done. But Labor has an appeal for some reason the Coalition does not have and can do things the Coalition would never get away with.

From 2008-2013 ALP/Greens locked up 8,469 children. There were 2,000 in detention when the Coalition won govt in 2013. Morrison found that Labor had not even arranged for the kids to have proper schooling and were bored out of their brains with nothing to do. One of the first things Morrisson did was to arrange for the kids to have proper schooling. You find out what people believe by what they do not by what they say

No can you imagine what Labor would say if Howard had done something like that?

Dutton did not lock up 8,000 children the ALP did. After locking them up the ALP did not provide schooling. It was Morrison who arranged for the bored children to go to school

Labor even sent young children to manus as a deterrent to show what Australia does to kids if people smugglers want to send them to Australia

But lefties like to say Herr Dutton. It was the left/ALP who did the locking up like the natural totalitarians they are

I’ve never had a particular problem with Turnbull, moderate, reasonably progressive on social issues, reasonable in advocating economic policy.

But he’s been swamped by bigots and luddites – Dutton reflects the narrow minded bigotry of the deep north, and is unacceptable in the civilised parts of the country. For example I live in the Kooyong electorate, I think it is entirely possible that the Greens will win the seat at the next election.

The place is full of doctors and their tennis playing wives partners, a bigoted fascist like Dutton is absolutely unacceptable for this demographic.

So… I know people say we should focus on policy not the personality – my reply is that the political complexion/orientation of the leader is the reflection of the majority of the party- so if the Liberals choose a bigoted fascist, that represents the majority view.

Now excuse me, I’m just going to throw up.

Alan Jones was the instigator of the Cronulla riots, he broke the broadcasting code of conduct for this. Then cash for comments. How is the prick ever trusted?
The riot was still three days away and Sydney’s highest-rating breakfast radio host had a heap of anonymous emails to whip his 2GB listeners along. “Alan, it’s not just a few Middle Eastern bastards at the weekend, it’s thousands. Cronulla is a very long beach and it’s been taken over by this scum. It’s not a few causing trouble. It’s all of them.”
He assured his huge audience he “understood” why that famous text message went out and he read it right through again on air. “Come to Cronulla this weekend to take revenge. This Sunday every Aussie in the Shire get down to North Cronulla to support the Leb and wog bashing day …”
Daily he cautioned his listeners not to take the law into their own hands, but he warmed to listeners who had exactly that on their minds.
Last Thursday Charlie rang to suggest all junior footballers in the Shire gather on the beach to support the lifesavers. “Good stuff, good stuff,” said Jones.
“I tell you who we want to encourage, Charlie, all the Pacific Island people because, you want to know something, they don’t take any nonsense. They are proud to be here — all those Samoans and Fijians. They love being here. And they say, ‘Uh huh, uh huh. You step out of line, look out.’ And, of course, cowards always run, don’t they?”
When John called on Tuesday to bluntly recommend vigilante action — “If the police can’t do the job, the next tier is us” — Jones did not dissent. “Yeh. Good on you, John.” And when he then offered a maxim his father had picked up during the war — “Shoot one, the rest will run” — the broadcaster roared with laughter. “No, you don’t play Queensberry’s rules. Good on you, John.”

“The people that came in in 2013 and 2016, you know, inside my party but also across the chamber, inside our party at the moment you’ve got this great chasm of the left and the right, and historically those that are the senior leaders of both sides have been at each other’s throats for 20 to 30 years, but the hope of the [party] is the next generation.

“The guys on the right of our party right now, the next generation – Michael Sukkar, Zed Seselja, Tony Pasin, these sorts of guys – are good mates of mine and the people on the left of the party that came in more recently.

“We didn’t experience those first lot of horrible years. We’ve sort of inherited and watched on and now, I think hopefully with Scott [Morrison] and Josh [Frydenberg], is a generational change which I think’s needed.

But… my issue with unions… started after a few deliberately screwed up Keatings reform agenda, they wilfully derailed the focus of an effective government.

Since then I’ve observed behaviour in several industries that have undermined plant maintenance and overhaul. In the linger term this has reduced willingness to invest and maintain power generation, manufacturing etc

The behaviour isn’t usually reflected in the ongoing production unions, it’s those that disrupt overhaul and maintenance work to push an agenda.

Shutdowns are shortened, the bare minimum of work is done to avoid exposure to industrial action. This leads to plant degradation and unreliability.

It is part of the reason for underinvestment in Australian industry.

Fine, and if management here gets complicated and “unlean” the investment goes somewhere else.

People looking for a place to invest go wherever they get the best return, and as we don’t offer low priced labour, real estate or energy, we have to find something else that is attractive.

Interestingly, the ‘Run To Fail’ mentality began here, where I am, around the same as our 4+ year wage freeze (still going) began.
The only time we rate a mention in the media is when we undertake Protected Action; and trust me, we have been polite about what we can do if we actually decide to ‘regulate’ our ‘labour’ (in my industry, it’s much more like technical expertise than ‘labour’, but the company likes preparing a high speed technological Paper Mill to local Saw Mills [incomparable- have been in both] an easily rebutted red herring).
It’s almost a national strategy of Big(ger) Business to stall, disrupt or avoid EA negotiations which may rsult in wage rises, contemporarily. I wonder if they could possibly all be pursuing the same strategies which the Business Party enables for them? 🙄

“Split union coverage limits flexibility and requires more management.”

There is one very large Union (CFMMEU) and a couple of maintenance Unions with almost negligible membership, on my site. The change in the Company’s stance with regard to IR over the last half a decade is the genuinely notable antagonism (after veritable decades of NO Industrial Action, acrimony or lack of cooperation). the ‘Run To Fail’ mentality

The most public example of this is our power networks. Having been subjected to having a transformer blow up down the street, which actually started a fire in our house, and blew/destroyed everything currently plugged in, I’m no fan. The stinger was the hoops we had to jump through to get our equipment ‘fixed’ No replacements, they had an electrician on contract who dodged appliances back up, but shortened their lives considerably. Our nice new fridge struggled on for a few more years before finally succumbing, and our printer blew up a few weeks after everything else was settled, just after we’d signed off 😦

The other consequence of privatisation has been a decline in service reliability, with the regular failure of fuses and transformers across South Australia. Before privatisation ETSA had maintenance teams which monitored transformers and replaced them before they failed, thus ensuring minimal interruption to the electrical supply.

Their lust for money, their gifts to the rich while taking from the poor, their treatment of those less fortunate than themselves, the total indifference to those fleeing persecution, their insistence on borders against people while creating a world economy to reduce wages for the citizens, is completely at odds with the teachings of Christ. We had no leg to stand on. We could either accept the appliances being soldered back to working condition, or get nothing. That was all that was required.

All to save a few dollars on maintenance, and we, the consumer, pay for it.

Yet the price of line rental went up, whilst their ‘investment’ in it’s maintenance went down.

    “The Farmer’s get Climate Change!”

From my personal observances, over 40+yrs (and, more importantly, those of my father, who has farmed the same patch of land since before I was born)…

You can’t make this shit up…and I’m more than aware that weather doesn’t equal climate & trends are trends and nobody was here to countenance geological time scales…BUT

The paddock at the bottom of the hill our Soldier Settler’s farm house was built upon was inundated for the midwinter months of the year at the vestiges of my living memory; swamplike. The flats were inaccessible at the same time…under water.
Ours is some of the agricultural land in the country not currently in drought; ie. not marginal.
It has not been under water/swamplike/inundated since the mid 80’s. Take what you will from that, but it’s mine own fucking eyeballs filing the report & I wouldn’t bother ‘deliberately misleading’ about it.
And if you don’t believe me, ask someone who’s been there since he was 3 (now 65ish); my Dad.

AGW or not. Farmers observe things which metro-dwellers are utterly oblivious to.

Personally, I trust mine own eyes, and I certainly trust my Dad (he’s one of the rare people in this world who doesn’t pick sides and is a critical thinker) .

Influential ‘farmers’ corroborating his/my personal observations doesn’t surprise me at all…and about fucking time; the penchant for social conservatism in such rural areas certainly hasn’t helped the ‘message’ getting out.

The party currently in government that coerced, threatened and downright bullied states into selling off their energy assets to private companies, because that would reduce prices, is now advertising using taxpayers hard earned money in telling us that they are threatening the retailers and it also looks like we will receive a government subsidy (taxpayers money) to lower prices. Once again a massively failed disposal of previously publicly owned assets which could be price controlled if need be, to price gouging of a massive king. Who would have thought that private companies driven solely for profit, greed and bonuses would rip off a captive market.

The Labor govt in SA forced out coal generated electricity. If fact they blew them up costing the jobs of hundreds at Playford and the Leigh Creek coal mine supplying the coal. The town is now dead. SA now does not generate any electricity using coal and have the nations highest prices.

In Victoria Labor tripled the royalties on brown coal.

Labor does everything it can to drive out the cheapest method of generating electricity- coal. Privatisation has nothing to do with increasing electricity prices

While the Morrison government has identified lowering power prices as a key early priority, a new analysis says wholesale prices will almost halve over the next four years because of the technology many Coalition conservatives oppose – renewables.

The latest renewable energy index compiled by Green Energy Markets confirms analysis by the Energy Security Board that wholesale electricity prices are on the way down because of an addition of 7,200 megawatts of extra large-scale supply from renewable energy.

Exactly, now the proof is starting to emerge and renewables are forming part of the mix DESPITE this despicable government and Tony Abbotts actions as PM, because the profit gouging from private ownership has forced those with the ability to build their own renewable energy.Even the partisan LNP supporters the NFF actually are starting to mention the words climate change again after being scared off by Tony Abbott into mentioning it.

If all the solar panels in NSW stopped working tomorrow they would need to build 2 new generation plants to meet the demand during the SUNNY and HOT DAYS alone. The panels have saved the NSW Government BILLIONS in construction costs. While it may have cost when they were first heavily subsidised, they are now performing the desired result. ONce again a VISION for the future, a PLAN for the future and ACTION for the future from the ALP not the LNP.

Even if true so what? My point still stands. Most govt money comes from taxing the private sector. TomR was trying to say that govt had money to give private companies. Govt gets most of its money from taxing private business.

And I read somewhere the govt is getting more money from the Commonwealth Bank after privatisation because the bank is making bigger profits and so is contributing more in income tax than when govt owned.

But you changed the topic. Most money govts gets come from taxing private enterprise. It is a joke to try and make out that govt has money to give it generated itself

  331. shaneinqld permalink
    August 31, 2018 12:38 pm

You blatantly stated that Govt Does Not Generate Revenue and I pointed out to you it does, how is that changing the topic. While this government generates no revenue it still does have money to gift to private companies all the time. There are literally thousands of private companies now being paid billions of dollars to perform functions that were once performed by public servants while also making a profit on those services, thereby actually costing us taxpayers more in the long run. Govt gets most of its money from taxing individuals by way of GST and Income Tax, not from business.

If the government owned the CBA if would be getting 100% of the dividend like it used to, not simply the tax on the profit after all deductions. So unless the government is getting $20,000,000,000 that’s Twenty Billion from the CBA then it has lost on the deal of privatisation. Can you not comprehend that. If we still owned it we would get ALL of the dividend !!!!. The comment regarding tax is simply privatisation cheer squad trying to justify the sale of government assets.

Shane, i think most that has been sold should have been sold.

Australian Airlines would never have survived competition from Virgin if it had remained in government ownership. Qantas faces even more competition and government ownership would have resulted in protection via international rights, and higher prices

I don’t think Telstra would provide a better service if it was government owned. I think government ownership would have promoted protection from competition rather than better service

With regarding to power generation and distribution, I’m not sure the government runs the industry any better than the private sector. I think regulation is needed – and the proposal for a benchmark price is a good one.

You know a lot about banking, and so my only observation is that most of the state government owned banks didn’t turn out so well under government ownership. Again – banks are guaranteed and protected, and the trade off for this should he strongly enforced regulation.

I disagree completely, we had 100% land mobile coverage under Telecom, there were technicians in all areas in case of breakdowns, you were guaranteed a time for service connection and a guaranteed time of arrival, maintenance was performed correctly and not with sticky tape and glue. Communications is an essential service and should be in public ownership.

Ownership of energy ensures that we are not beholden to any company for power generation and we can regulate the price as we own the operation. I have no doubt that the government runs the industry better, we have only had massive power bills and increases since privatisation of the industry.

Medibank Private was a classic example, as soon as privatised the CEO salary increased by 400%, they started plotting to remove certain benefits from policies and seeking even higher premium increases for less benefits and less service. This industry makes $1,000,000,000 profit with most of that going back to the UK, yet policies and benefits and being reduced year in year out.

Service by any publicly owned enterprise is open to far more scrutiny than any privately owned company, the long long list of private companies ripping off staff, hiring illegal workers, not paying super levy, going bankrupt and then starting again under another name is things that never happen under public ownership.

Ownership is far more preferable than regulation, regulations are ignored, abused, campaigned against and bribed for change all the time.

State government banks were fine until they corporatised them and the top management went on a lending spree to the wrong people. Surely you remember that Westpac almost went to the wall with a loss of $750,000,000 in one year after the bond fiasco. Not a State bank but a private bank and one of the biggest in Australia.

What banks had to rely on a government guarantee during the GFC to obtain finance? All of them and all privately owned. May as well all be owned by the government if we have to guarantee them during the tough times yet let them screw the public during the good times.

Regulation is always an afterthought with private companies and lobbying behind the scenes ensures it is never ever the regulation that is required.

I much prefer ownership where we can determine strategy, outcomes, employment, service, return on investment and pricing, while having no need for regulation enforcement.

Really? There are thousands of private companies. And small business employs more people than big business. I doubt that CBA, Qantas, TAA etc were giving the govt more than the fraction of the revenue it got from private business.

And I saw somebody post that the govt is getting more money from CBA since privatisation because it is making bigger profits than when govt owned.

And I remember the monopoly Telcom. Ring them up for help and you might get it in several weeks time. Then Optus entered the market and they became more people friendly

I worked for Telecom for 3 years before starting wit the CBA. I can tell you the service was far, far better than we get now. The cost was more expensive but they were still building the network for the whole of Australia and covering every square inch with mobile coverage, unlike the private companies who only build in profit generating areas. WE now have tax payers money building towers in black spots that telecom would have built form its own funds generated from REVENUE rather than tax.

The old service adage was the usual suspects seeking to privatise a government asset for their own greed. When you want to own something that is publicly owned create scandal, doubt, inquiries ( but stack them with people who will achieve the outcome you desire), get the Management onboard with promises of massive rewards and share bonuses. Have management manipulate the staff and coerce the staff into believing they will have a far better career and job prospects while knowing full wellk that jobs will be slashed, benefits decimated, services outsourced to overseas, allowances scrapped, while at the same time the top gorge themselves on dividends and bonuses and rights issues. I know the strategy because I have been in the corporation that was privatised TWICE.

When a charter is changed form service to the people of Australia to profit for shareholders, how on earth you can claim that the service is better privatised for all citizens is beyond my comprehension.

FFS Neil all the private companies make their profit from a lot of government workers. Accountants, Solicitors, Doctors, Retail, Mechanics, Car Dealers, Construction Companies, Myself, Banks, Telecommunications.

Take away all government contracts, any workers who works for the government and gets a salary, any person who is employed by a company that gets its income from the government via a contract.

If i removed every single customer of mine that is in some way paid for by government money I would lose more than 70% of my clients.

It is not just public servants you know. If a person in any way paid for my the government buys something from you then your income comes from the government.

YOu need ot ask those private companies how much of their revenue is from the government in any way before you start spruking that private enterprise spends or contributes more.

Are you able to comprehend this ?

If an accountant has a client and that person receives their wages in any way from the government. Or their employer or contractor does, then that income comes from the government not from private enterprise. Ask a small business person you know ( if you know any) to do the calculation then get back to me with this utter crap of private enterprise do the hard yards.

Farmers would have no mobile or telephone service if it was left up to private enterprise to build the network in the first place.

If a business focuses on shareholder dividends and profit centres … then the customer/client will always be dudded … the focus is not on service …

I have a long held suspicion that politicians privatise sections of government so that they cannot be held accountable to any “failure” … and benefit monetarily …

When power was generated as an essential service by state governments, the pricing was structured around cost to generate, maintain and improve …

Add privatisation to the mix and you now have a profit oriented third party AND shareholders demanding a return on their investment. This leads to shortcutting, skimming, manipulating and downright law breaking … and a higher risk of buying political favours … all for profit …

And if you can’t see that, simply look at the current royal commission … the Murray/Darling debacle … all about profit any cost (except to the profiteers!)

I’ve said it before … essential services should be owned and operated by the people ie government … eg water, power, medical/health, education, training …

… how long before security services are applying for tenders as police … how long before we call in mercenary soldiers and disband the ADF …

… why bother with a government at all … employ a Council of the People … and select them at random just like juries (that do seem to be effective BTW) …

Perhaps. But look at the service provided by privately run airlines compared to govt run Russian airline Aeroflot

Govt workers have problems as well. They do not care about providing a service if they know they have a permanent job. If they don’t like the colour of the new coffee machine they thrown it out and buy a new one and increase rates or taxes to pay for it. Govt workers do not care about waste because they have secure jobs with unlimited money from the taxpayer

Why bother with private industry at all then? Just have 100% govt

Years ago I worked for one of the privatised companies. Through privatisation I observed it’s culture move from being non responsive to customers and consumer expectations to one that is relatively successful and stable.
It provides far more jobs now than it did when it was owned by the government.
Government ownership politicises board appointments and management – ex politicians and hacks make it to boards or executive management and run their political agendas.
The government can regulate commercial enterprises . It does not have to tie up public funds in owning them.

Most new inventions have good and bad things. Govt running things and private enterprise both have good and bad things. In all things there needs to be a balance somewhere.

Lefties want more govt. Righties want less govt.

fact is when a human being gets a govt job they always justify themselves higher wages and working conditions. For example govt workers now get 15.4% Super whereas most people in private enterprise get only 9%

And when someone in local govt does not like the colour of their coffee machine they order a new one and increase rates to pay for it.

Nobody in govt should be paid more than the Prime Minister

Because I’m a capitalist … I ran my own business for 16 years … and serviced my clients pretty well … I believe … I have a simple motto “Provide the service and the dollars will follow” … not seek a profit at all costs and fuck the service …

Essential services are not the same … they are essential for life … no-one is suggesting that we become communists (don’t go there) … I am, if anything, a social democrat … I believe that services as mentioned above should be available to all … at a fair price – not a “market” price … people should not have to seek out a fair price (many don’t know how) … and capitalist competition is not the way to provide essential services …

There is a place for privately owned business’s to create a profit … and a place for government monopolies to simply provide services …

Problem is some people want to privatise everything … and in many cases that has been an abject failure …

What really annoys me about govt workers now is that they appear to be better paid than the private sector. They certainly have better Super. 15.4% compared to 9% for most people in private industry. University workers get 17%. Once people get on the govt teat they can always find ways to justify higher benefits

Neil: That almost all businesses get income from the government is not an opinion, it is fact, you obviously are unable to separate fact from opinion. Are you related to Donald Trump ?

ToM disagree, I have worked on both sides of the fence as well and went through one of the privatisations. When we were publicly owned the service to the public was the paramount thing bashed into us, 2 in a queue get up and serve, staffing numbers were based on customer service matrix, a customer must never be waiting. When we were sold off it all became profit, let the customer wait, unless the queue is out the door keep working and not serving, divert phone calls from branches to a call centre where the staff still have to call the branch to find out the answer, push customers to automated banking whether they wan ti or not. Manipulate interest rates based on so called risk matrix to make as much profit as you can. Bonuses on profit not on service. Of course we had lazy staff, so did all the other private banks, actually even worse who sent anyone who didn’t have a job down to the CBA to open an account. Have you never shopped in Woolies or Coles and seen how lazy so many of the staff are. How indifferent the staff are, how the “How was your day” is so scripted it is fake.

Public servants are no lazier than private staff. I suppose you think Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, ATO Tax Staff etc etc are all lazy. Actually I find them far more responsive and helpful than many private workers thats for sure.

TB I agree I am a social democrat as well. Essential services publicly owned. Other services that can be manipulated such as finance to have a government owned body running alongside the private companies just like the CBA did. A CDB for development. Anything that cannot fully manipulate the public can be completely privatised.

Regulation is a total failure I witnessed it from within.

Community Style Banks did not cop the flack because the RC had limited powers of investigation and focused on the major complaints and major lending is held by the big 4. I can tell you that the Community Style Banks are no different in their model they are just not an exciting target like the big 4. When it comes to business and rural lending the Community Banks do very little. When the big 4 command almost 90% share of the lending just who do you think will be the headline for the RC.
