Why was Michelle Guthrie Sacked from the ABC?

September 24, 2018

Michelle Guthrie.png

Controversial Managing Director Michelle Guthrie has been sacked from the ABC effective immediately.

According to a statement released by the ABC, the decision was made when the directors resolved that it was “not in the best interests of the ABC” for Ms Guthrie to continue to lead the organisation.

Guthrie has been widely criticised as an LNP lackey who has orchestrated a “dumbing down” of the national broadcaster steering its focus away from political analysis and current affairs and more towards “lifestyle” programming.

No explanation has been offered for Guthrie’s sacking but given the broadcaster has kicked around as a political football for the last ten years or so it begs the question as to whether there has been political intervention in this latest turn of events.

Are they paving the way for a potential Labor Federal Government, or has there been some divine intervention in the interim?

The Australian recently published a “rift” between Guthrie and the Chairman of the Board.

    Hi Reb

What is interesting is that the board has been stacked with IPA stooges, so was Michelle not disruptive enough for them to destroy the ABC from within. Or are the board worried about the fist full of dollars they are rewarded each fortnight for the disgraceful job they are doing and will probably lose if the ALP win the next election.

I have heard that there are a number of big businesses that have are no longer donating to the LNP coffers for the next election and are secretly meeting with the ALP due to them believing that an ALP win is inevitable.

Previously they’d interrupt to argue the point after about 3 words.

The @same applies to; sewer, drainage, gas, and freshWater pipes, telecom wires, electric wires, sealed roads and railway lines. (and probably more stuff)

The inHouse dumbfcuk regularly quotes; “ 15,800 .. 12,800 per premises ” and ignores ALL OTHER info, implying it is a ‘paid to dribble’ troll run out of an ipa/teabag ‘sabotage the fiber’ unit.

    ____

You would have to be a ‘wilfull’ troll to swallow the numbers and continually regurgitate them. Why? Because they are an ‘average’ or ‘median’ number; which includes running fiber thousands of KMs across the nullabor, and hundreds of KMs between populated areas. All without a single user connected.

All the inHouse dumbfcuk proves is its own stupidity. lt is clearly satisfied with the sheer waste its team has created by sabotaging the fiber and; entrenching the failure of wireCo to its competitors.

When “ asked about The Forgotten Children, the heartbreaking program about the children stranded on Nauru as a result of Australia`s refugee policies, Guthrie qualified her praise of the program by saying they should have sought out some happy children to interview as well. There weren`t any, said one staffer. Underwhelmed and gobsmacked were just some of the reactions to Guthrie’s contribution, sources told Guardian Australia.

An indication of “ how controversial her leadership has become emerged on Friday when her Wikipedia page was defaced. She was described as a “corporate_stooge” for News International and as “director of corporate greed” for Foxtel.

In December 2015, “it was announced that Guthrie would become damaging director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), replacing Mark Scott who retired in April 2016,” her Wiki page has been edited to say.

The ABC is able to investigate the private sector without the threat of advertising revenue being removed. What TV station would investigate Aged Care, Greyhound Racing, Franchises, Banks, Insurance Companies etc etc. They can do so because they are not reliant on advertising revenue. The rest of the channels are gutless and use smoke and mirrors to cloud any reporting because they would lose the revenue from that organisation.

The other stations only report the after facts once the ABC has done the investigation, prepared a programme and reported on the theft and utter disgraceful actions of CEOs in so many companies.

The ABC is now needed more than ever when a media mogul is happy to lose hundreds of millions of dollars to maintain a media presence for the sole objective of influencing political outcome for his advantage.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/oct/01/how-a-disastrous-change-in-perspective-disempowered-the-left-and-let-the-right-rise

Considerable evidence could thus be adduced for the Bush-was-a-moron theory.

But what followed politically? If Bush was the stupidest of the stupid white men, how had he come to power? Who had voted for him? Most of all, why weren’t ordinary people rising up against the dangerous buffoon who ruled them?

Moore’s book drew a simple conclusion. “[I]f you live in a country,” he wrote, “where 44 million can’t read – and perhaps close to another 200 million can read but usually don’t – well, friends, you and I are living in one very scary place.” The moron president remained in power because the American people were themselves moronic. Stupid White Men described Bush as the “idiot leader of an idiot nation”, and explained that “it comes as no surprise to foreigners that Americans, who love to revel in their stupidity, would ‘elect’ a president who rarely reads anything – including his own briefing papers”.

Frightening stuff when you consider Trump, Duterte, Putin, Kim, Ji Jingping, May and our “lovable all round Aussie Bogan” Morrison …

One classic example, Kochi always claimed we did not need a RC into Banks, why ?. Probably because the CBA and Commsec are a big part of their revenue.

Also Murdoch is subsidised by us as well, what about the $30,000,000, what did we get for that, where is it, where is the cost benefit analysis, why is Murdoch not open to scrutiny and fairness for that $30,000,000 of taxpayers money he received?

Look at the links I provided TB – that’s just in the past 6 months – they’ve had to apologies for the behaviour of Faine.

Faine behaves in the same argumentative and provocative manner with anyone he feels like. If he can’t badger people he disagrees with – he becomes snide and tried to irritate them.

Taxpayers should not fund broadcasters like that.

And I’m not sure what point TB & Shane are trying to make about my comments – I’ve already said I appreciate people like Raphael Epstein on the ABC – he is an inquisitive journalist who doesn’t try to impose his opinions or personality. If all ABC broadcasters and TV hosts followed his approach – there would be no political criticism.

And they would be providing an outstanding public service.

3CR is a totally different entity than the ABC. It is not funded by the taxpayer and it is supported by mostly volunteers. It relies on community donations, so there must be someone listening who is prepared to donate, Its audience is limited while the ABC audience is the whole country.

The point i am trying to make is that we need a strong ABC not one that is being accused of being left wing bias every week while all investigations have virtually found nothing. A mistake here or there is hardly a left wing conspiracy of epic proportions.

As for paying for it, my taxes pay for schools and I have never had children. There are cross subsidisations everywhere, that is what a community is.

As for no political criticism, I am not adverse to criticism of the ABC, as both sides do it. I am utterly appalled at the political interference over the last 5 years from one side of politics in electing board members, slashing funding, bowing to demands from Pauline Hanson. Demanding that the ABC provide equal time for things such as immunisation by the proven scientists and some nut jobs who claim immunisation is bad. It is utterly ridiculous to expect the ABC to give equal time to both sides of an argument if one side is not proven.

The board has been stacked and for that this government should be sacked itself. It has politicised the ABC by stealth.

There are far more people who love the ABC than hate it and it will be a real election issue come next year. It already has the strictest charter of any media organisation in the country where the others can actually tell lies, bullshit and total utter crap and not have to worry about being brought to task. The US Supreme Court ruled that Murdoch tabloid can tell lies, that it was ok to tell lies to the public, that lies were ok. Thats enough for me to want to keep a public broadcaster paid for by taxation and not donations, advertising or any other means of manipulation.

Well TB, Hadley & Jones aren’t broadcast here, but you use them as examples of broadcasting to be avoided. They don’t rate here because Melbourne doesn’t have the mass bogan demographic of Brisbane and Sydney.

But Faine’s huge salary is entirely paid by taxpayers- taxpayers deserve impartiality and inquiry, not loudmouths that insult the disabled, and use needling tactics and racism when the interview/opinion piece isn’t going their way.

Shane, 3CR gets plenty of public funding, and donations. The point is that the station is a vehicle for broadcasting left views, it’s just that no one is interested in listening to lefty whingers

The ABC needs more dedicated journalists – like Epstein and fewer celebrities that use taxpayer funding for (self) promotion of their personal opinions

…and by the way – I think Waleed Aly is another broadcaster who does his best to be reasonably balanced.

Those types exist in the ABC, but opinionated self promoters are more common, and if they want to behave like that – go and do it without putting your hand out for taxpayer money.

There are laws in relation to heritage buildings and how you can put those laws in the same basket as Negative Gearing amazes me. “The ABC is able to investigate the private sector without the threat of advertising revenue being removed. What TV station would investigate Aged Care, Greyhound Racing, Franchises, Banks, Insurance Companies etc etc. They can do so because they are not reliant on advertising revenue. The rest of the channels are gutless and use smoke and mirrors to cloud any reporting because they would lose the revenue from that organisation.”

I always kinda got this, in the background, but Shane’s comment gave me an epiphany.

The ABC, which I grew up on (only ABC & a local tripe station, for viewing pleasure…most often ABC on my childhood TV), must be protected from inaccurately aggrieved interference by ‘conservatives’. Shane is correct about investigating without being Privately beholden.

You socialists just look at private companies as cash cows to fund your socialist lifestyle and policies. Most private companies are doing it tough having to make their money to pay their staff from hard work and effort. In contrast govt workers do not face the same pressure. If they do not like something they just increase taxes on private companies to please themselves

Socialism: One of the big critiques of capitalism is the fact that one of the forms of capital that is privately owned is the means of production (factories, farms, etc.). Socialists contend that private ownership of the means of production allows a disproportionate amount of wealth to accumulate in the hands of a small class of people, the capitalists, or the Bourgeoisie. This concentration of wealth then warps the supposed efficiency of the market, as the bourgeois class controls a share of it to make it meet their needs above the needs of the poor. The socialists therefore advocate some form of socializing the means of production, or giving control of them to a broader portion of society. Different means of doing this include worker-ownership and workplace democracy (each company becomes a small democracy), democratic state ownership (the people elect the government, so they indirectly control the means of production), and various nuanced arrangements for giving people power over production.

    Yep, I’m a social democrat … and a capitalist … just not you’re type of capitalist …

You do know that socialism, communism and democracy are political concepts … and market demand and command demand are economic systems …

I suspect that you don’t realise that the capitalism that we now experience – privatisation of essential services is destroying your family (you do have a family don’t you?) and mine with profiteering … you see, socialism embraces capitalism but recognises societies essential needs (water, power, health, education, care for the weak and support for the poor) not profit for a few ROBBER BARONS!

You are wee bit wrong here. When talking about `devotionals` they are not limited to spiritual, ethical or skyfairy. Previous working examples would include the fascists and commies of the early 1900s. Now l refer to all them simply as teabags; even if they or others subdivide them as boltists, reaganists, repugs, tories, corporatists, etc But they are devotionals. Often so devotional it is against their own kids interest. (how many parents handed over their kids to pedo priests) Take a good hard look at the teabags everywhere. lts a cult, and it mirrors the established cults/religions. Globally teabags drown the public square with scarcity and econoBabble. (previously the public square was drowned with evil and angry skyfairy) The teabags have their ipa wishlist. (bible, torah, quaran) The teabags have their talking heads and commenters and promoters. … have you noticed how nice children are – until they grow up … the son of my neighbour was in his mid 20’s and he had attended a NYE party at our home … I walked him to the gate between our properties and he suddenly turned around, “Do you believe in God, TB?” … I don’t know if god exists or not … but I know right from wrong … that’s enough for me … his mother was a “devout” catholic – I mean devout – and she had destroyed this bloke – sent him to cat ed schools and college (where he discovered drugs) and she lied about his addiction …

Remember the time in state school when all the religions could turn up and spread their viruses?

My kids asked which one they should go to … we told them … try all of them … the only class they were ejected from —– Catholic – because they weren’t Catholics???

I would welcome a subject on Global Religion in state schools … conducted by professional educators with … no I wouldn’t I agree with, reb, utter skyfairy BS ..

My daughter told me only a couple of days ago that she “experimented” with religion when she was younger late 20’s early 30’s … and she discovered “there was something that was not right” … my son the soldier … he has some great mates! That’s what its about for them!

And there’s Scientology set up by a sci fi writer (I was a fan) and controlled by a bunch of multi millionaire “artists” … tax break anyone?

And WTF do religions get a tax break at all! Because they should be “respected”

BTW ToM … you resent paying for the ABC’s contribution to society … I resent paying for religions not paying tax … to foster a fairytale …

That is easy. The mentally ill were evicted and had their institution sold from underneath them by teabags, resulting in many becoming homeless or part of the prison system. Those that believe in skyfairy still have their taxbreaks and club house. It’s true religion may have helped them do this, but it is just as likely that they would have performed these acts without religion

I’m surprised you both aren’t a little more familiar with history.
Prior to the early 90s there was no right to strike. All strikes were illegal and unprotected, but they were tolerated by employers because the process involved in obtaining and enforcing orders of the Commission was particularly onerous.

If orders were issued the employer was required to enforce them – this required seeking penalties for the breach. Employers were loath to seek specific penalties against union officials (Clarrie O’Shea is the case study)

Orders were very rarely sought, and no one really enforced them.

In the early 90s the right to strike was legislated as part of enterprise bargaining – so unions obtained a right they’d never had before, but with the right came some responsibilities – such as observing process and pursuing claims only about the employment relationship.

You would do better learn some of the history around hoffa, and who the public/ consumer/ worker end up supporting when they don`t get treated fairly. Nonetheless, lots of union types suggest that unions have lost rights – but they don’t seem to understand that there was never a right to strike until enterprise bargaining. And the protected industrial action has to be about employment matters between the employer and the employees.

When it comes to; carbon-not-a tax-price, repugSwooning, the too-late paris weather club; change the anthum; change the tablecloth; these are Luxury or irrelevant topics to voters struggling along on junkjobs or pensions, being wrecked by general living costs. These topics also have questionable merit, which makes both teams spend huge amounts of time trying to defend and explain them to voters tired of listening to bullshit. He was a very successful Australian Rugby Union coach. WOW! What can say!

Oh! This is interesting … bit more significant than a fkn Union coach …

    Personal life

Jones has never been married and has no children.[4] He resides in Sydney.[12]

    Political aspirations

In 1974, a parent at The King’s School, Parramatta, Doug Anthony, leader of the Country Party (now the National Party of Australia) in the Australian Parliament, offered Jones a position with the party in Canberra.[9] In 1975, Jones sought party preselection as the candidate for the Federal parliamentary seat of Eden-Monaro, but lost the bid.[8]

In 1978, he was the candidate for the July 1978 by-election for the NSW state seat of Earlwood for the Liberal Party of Australia, formerly held by deposed Liberal leader Sir Eric Willis. He lost what had been considered a “safe seat”.[13] Jones again contested the seat for the Liberal Party at the 1978 New South Wales state election held in October. The ALP candidate was returned with a greater majority.[14]

In September 1979, Jones stood for Liberal preselection for the Federal Division of North Sydney, placing third in the ballot. The winning candidate, Peter Solomon was later disendorsed, but Jones did not re-contest the ballot in March 1980, with John Spender taking preselection and winning the seat.[4][10]

In 1986, Jones nominated for the Liberal preselection for the Federal Division of Wentworth in Sydney, but was a late withdrawal from the ballot; the preselection and seat was won by future Liberal leader Dr John Hewson.[4][10]

    Health issues

In July 2008 Jones underwent surgery for prostate cancer.[15] In December 2008, he had surgery to remove a benign brain tumour.[16]

Jones is a fkn arrogant, self-centred, mealy mouthed, small minded cockroach! Wherever he was born.

” the whole system has been manipulated in favour of employers … eg striking is virtually illegal but lock outs aren’t … bargaining is usually stalled by employers … conditions are still being eroded … and casual and part time jobs are rife …”

I have been living this for the last half decade+…right up until this very day, and going forwards, still unresolved.

A cynical person may come to the conclusion that the Company, by such stalling, imposition & suffocating legislation hobbling meaningful PIA, has just secured a 5year+ pay freeze (ongoing)?

Striking has been made almost toothless and the burden of responsibility from the Company side is laughable. I wonder why?

I wish I wasn’t bound by a confidentiality agreement…the things I could add to this discussion.

  287. October 6, 2018 7:29 pm

“Strikes occur regularly – there is a process to follow that’s all.

Which part of the process do you (TB & Tom R) object to?”

Once again, if I could actually comment upon Company actions & strategies, with regard to this, without fear of cessation of employment (all laid out very clearly in their Americanised Code Of Conduct…applied cynically, when fortuitous, and not at all, when expedient) …most of your dismissal of the current bargaining process could be easily rebutted, YomM.

The match, won 6-4 by Australia, was one of the most violent in rugby league history, with one player needing 33 stitches after being kicked in the head, another knocked senseless by a punch in the opening minutes and a spectator running on to the field to take a swing at British fullback Arthur Keegan. ”

All strikes were illegal and unprotected

Up until employers began using the law to prosecute people. The it was required

Now employers complain about the law ROFL

Striking has been made almost toothless

And as that link from yomm showed, it wasn’t the FWA itself, but the myriad ‘minor’ ‘tweaks’ that have made it unworkable from a Union stand point.

The pendulum swung far to the side of the employers, and continues.

The FWA act brought it back towards the center, but quite obviously (expecially in retrospect) should have gone further

We are still feeling the effects of work choices.

Secret ballot, claims about employment and observing agreed schedule of meetings are the main requirements. It’s not that onerous.

well, add them to others like these
The FWC can make an order to suspend or terminate protected industrial action on its own initiative, or on application by:

    ……..
    the Minister for Employment

    or

the action is protracted and is causing, or is going to cause, significant economic harm to the employer or employees who will be covered by the agreement.

    and the bigger list here

    https://www.fairwork.gov.au/how-we-will-help/templates-and-guides/fact-sheets/rights-and-obligations/industrial-action#initiateprotection

Yea, it gets ‘onerous’ pretty quick

    Yea, it’s from the lolstrayan

Tom R, many employers only need a skeleton crew to run for a day, so participation in protests is available.

In Victoria there are programmed RDOs, one a fortnight , but the unions often choose a working day for their protests. Why is that?

I think it is mainly to inconvenience employers. If the protests were held on the programmed RDOs there would be no question about the rights of people to attend.
