Whatever happened to Free Speech…!!

December 17, 2019

Robert Vigors and Karen Ridge neighborly visit

Free speech is under threat in this country and it’s an absolute disgrace!

For far too long, we have allowed mealy-mouthed lefties with their PC hearts on their tiny hessian sleeves to dictate what goes on in this country that we have spent decades trying to build and protect.

Hard fought rights that today shape our very existence are being ebbed away by those would profess to know better but in fact threaten the very freedoms we take for granted today.

Heck, it’s getting to the stage where you can’t even drop by to visit the neighbours to question the authenticity of their ethnicity and tear down their national flag without fear of vilification or worse; losing your livelihood.

Patriots and proud (but not-so-silent) Quiet Australians Robert Vigors and Karen Ridge are now financially worse off and have had their reputations tarnished simply for asserting their inalienable right to be bigots (hat tip to Tom R).

What is wrong with this country.

    From the Oz………………….

“Climate activist Tim Flannery is the force behind a band of former state fire and emergency chiefs accusing Scott Morrison of abandoning bushfires across the nation and demanding an immediate end to the burning of fossil fuels.

The Australian has confirmed Emergency Leaders for Climate Action — 29 ex-fire chiefs led by former NSW Fire and Rescue commissioner Greg Mullins — is funded by Professor Flannery’s crowd-funded Climate Council as an official “project”.

Let’s see whether a future Royal Commission will make an adverse finding against Morrison for taking a vacation when no one has died in a bushfire for a month.

It’s slightly different when you’re supposed to be in the integrated emergency control centre on a day when 180 people are burnt to death.

    Compare the pair

Federal parliament was suspended due to the emergency.[1] The Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, accepted an offer from the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, to dispatch members of the Australian Defence Force to provide assistance in that state. Rudd described the bushfires as an “appalling tragedy for Victoria,” saying “Hell and all its fury has visited the good people of Victoria in the last 24 hours.”[2]

    ■ high-level commitment from senior police
    ■ a research program aimed at refining arson prevention and detection strategies

The Simpson’s predictions are more accurate than Tim Flannery’s

Yet, he was still correct, and I recall there was much OUTRAGE from some contributors over his ‘alarmism’ (And yes, the Simpsons are true Soothsayers)

It’s interesting that the Royal Commission made 67 recommendations, and none were about our emissions.

That would reflect the terms of reference, which asked for a response to the fire, and a preparation for prevention of loss of life. It did ask for causes and circumstances of hte fires. This was provided

With populations at the rural–urban interface growing and the impact of climate change, the risks associated
with bushfire are likely to increase.
    ……..
The risks associated with bushfires are also potentially increasing as a result of population growth in the rural–urban
interface and the probable effects of climate change

The internal revolt from Labor’s industrial heartland threatens not just the reform but the Government’s survival.
Mr Hanson yesterday stepped up his union’s opposition to the tax, claiming the future of both cities would be in serious doubt because both had economies based on the high-emission production of steel, iron ore and zinc.

“Frankly, I’m not anxious to have the trial. If she thinks her case is so weak she doesn’t want to send it over, throw me into that briar patch,” McConnell added.

McConnell panned the House Democratic investigation of President Trump as “by far the thinnest basis for any House-passed presidential impeachment in American history.”

He also mocked House Democrats as being afraid to submit their two articles of impeachment to the Senate.

“The prosecutors are getting cold feet in front of the entire country and second-guessing whether they even want to go to trial,” he said. “They said impeachment was so urgent that it could not even wait for due process but now they’re content to sit on their hands. It is comical.”

No you don’t … it reminds me of senior British Army officers sitting in Paris during WWI … not having a clue about what’s really happening at the front … or a ship’s captain going on leave during operations … ’cause he/she’s tired …

And military personnel stationed overseas right now – away from family – for months at a time – in one instance for 10 months with two days leave – not with his family.

Ironic that the Acting PM was whelped in Wagga Wagga … an ADF town …

Like I said – this country isn’t being led its being bled …

What’s left or right got to do with “tragedies”?

You really do need to think a lot more … your choice of “tragedy” and the “obvious – yes” answer to all questions is once again an arrogant assumption …

… the results of accidents and natural disasters (deaths, injuries, damage) may vary with the same set of circumstances … (although rare … most uncontrolled events have variable multiple causation) … one death in a bush-fire is one too many … the tragedy is multiplied if more deaths occur … it is still a tragedy …

… in the case of an accident where one person dies and another is injured you fail to recognise that the injured person and their family often suffer physical, emotional and psychological trauma for a lifetime … (ie survivor syndrome, PTSD) … quick death or a painful lifetime???

I think you should explain how this occurred TB. Because I think the Full Bench hearings are exactly the same as occurred under the ALP government.

Under the legislation the government is entitled to make submissions, as is the right of other parties.

I think you’ve confused an ALP policy ( to amend their legislation by including penalties in employment protection) at the election with action by the Turnbull government.

I’d only observe that the ALP government specifically gave the FWC the power to change penalty rates, but they’ve changed their mind when the FWC weren’t persuaded by uniom/ ALP submissions.

We both agree that’s a dumb statement from Neville … and present circumstances have proven that we need more than a rag-tag volunteer fire service across the country (not that they need to be disbanded but can serve just as they do today – much like the ADF Reserves do now – who train, operate and deploy with regular ADF units)

Here’s my suggestion … over 3000 (actual number unknown) ex ADF personnel live on the streets … thousands more are unemployed … most will have the skills knowledge and experience to join, develop and operate a standing Federal Fire and Rescue Brigade that can be deployed anywhere in the country … incorporate a Federal Indigenous Land Management Organisation … and …

You’re not going to Hawaii during a bush fire crisis!

To Answer your (?) seems SootyMo has finally given in and deployed Reserve Task Forces (up from a few hundred to a couple of thousand) Navy, RAAF and ever faithful grunts as always …)

blockquote>Morrison calls out the ADF reserve, and funds more water bombers

The prime minister says just around half an hour ago, the governor-general signed off on the call-out of the Australian Defence Force Reserve to “search and bring every possible capability to bear by deploying army brigades to fire affected communities across Australia”.

Morrison says a two-star emergency ADF national support co-ordinator will have national authority over the ADF joint task forces in each of the affected states working in co-operation to support state emergency authorities.

He says the HMAS Adelaide, the navy’s largest amphibious ship, has been readied to join the current ships in supporting the evacuation of citizens from fire affected areas along the coastline. The Adelaide has been loaded up with a bunch of kit.

Morrison says the NSC today committed up to $20m to lease four extra planes to meet any anticipated future requests from the premiers. That will include two long range fixed wings DC-10s with 30,000 litres capacity and two medium range large air tankers with an 11,000 litre capacity.

He says the Commonwealth will fully fund the leasing costs with operational costs to be shared with state and territories as usual as they seek to use those assets.

By how much would Labor’s Carbon Tax have reduced global CO2 emissions, or even Australia’s (1.3% of global) emissions? I’m just trying to work out how that reduction would have – as you say – lessened the impact of these fires. Thanks in advance.

I’ll take your evasion as you conceding that:

Your claim about Labor’s Carbon Tax being able to have any effect whatsoever on these fires is complete and utter bullshit.

(I do hope you can understand the above. It’s written in Plaun English.)

Well, it’s obvious the Carbon Tax reduced emissions, there is data for that.

Asking what would have happened had it not been repealed is an impossible ask, as we can’t foresee what other initiatives etc may have spun from it.

    For ToSY…

Data released by the Department of the Environment (pdf) showed that emissions in the June quarter rose 0.4%. However, annual emissions to June 2014 dropped 1.4%

I see. So a reduction by 1.4% of Australia’s 1.3% of global emissions means a global decrease of 0.0182%. Anyone who thinks this could have any effect at all on these fires is not thinking clearly.

One thing is clear, that even reducing Australia’s emissions by 50% would not make any difference to the bushfires.

Does anyone seriously think that if global emissions were 99.3% of their current levels, the climate would be different?

Have you ever heard of a concept called synergy?

Exactly TB. It’s why the question is bullshit, because, as tosy showed, you select a small point, which is the only marker they have, showing the beginning of a decline in emissions, and use that in todays environment ignoring what most probably would have been a much larger reduction, not only here, but world wide.

Sliding Doors. And you cannot measure what you don’t know.

Of course, even by tosy’s calculations, and bullshit as they are, it’s still better. At this point in time, we should take anything. But we can’t, the libs put paid to that.

And no matter what people say now, we “used” to be a country others watched because we “were” a leader in moral issues.

We are now ignored by the world community at large, and seen more as a pariah than a leader.

And China would be looking and going … why should we, the two countries who made the most from destroying the planet, Australia and the US, are not for changing, so why should they miss out?

“Greed is Good” is still the motto. And look what it has brought us.

Australia is literally on fire, but ToSY and YoM’s position is that “there’s nothing to see here,” “it’s nothing to do with climate change” and it’s not really a disaster because “not enough people have died yet.”

Now that you’ve (incorrectly) stated what I think, allow me to tell you what I actually think. Then you can argue against that rather than your straw men:

There is no climate change policy that Australia could have put in place ever that would have made any difference to these fires. That’s it. Now you can explain the flaws in my argument.

And I don’t think I’ve used the term disaster, because I’ve said that the greater the number of fatalities, the greater the tragedy.

But for their own reasons some disagree.

I’m also of the view that there is no domestic carbon reduction policy that would have made any difference to these bushfires.

(And by the way, when was the last time China adopted a policy as a result of international sentiment, and the actions of other countries?)

Morrison disagrees … with fudge …

At a press conference, Morrison says he’s “always acknowledged the link … between the broader issues of global climate change and what that means for the world’s weather and the dryness of conditions in many places” but that “no response by any one government anywhere in the world can be linked to any one fire event”.

Yes, because even your worst case example showed an improvement, tiny, but an improvement.

The difference may have been imperceptible to casual measurement, but, a difference is a difference, and, if it’s in the correct direction, then it’s a good difference.

What we got instead was a much poorer difference, which has added to the intensity of these fires

    eg

For reference, yes, some Australian bush is good at regeneration. Others, not so much. The other issue is that these fires are more intense than have been seen before. “Normal” bush fires and back burning are quick flowing fires that move at speed burning the tops and leaving solid trees standing. These fires are not leaving anything behind.

If there are any viable seeds remaining, they also will not last long in the regions that are drought affected as rain is required to regenerate the forests afterwards.

We have no real idea how the bush will handle it. Some are saying that it may change the landscape forever and a Polish study suggests the same. They analysed regrowth based on burn severity and it suggested the most intense burns led to a change.

Really? It seems like a fairly accurate representation of your position.

“Now you can explain the flaws in my argument.”

Why would I bother, when the entire scientific community has already done so, for years.

  243. January 7, 2020 11:32 am

“I don’t think I’ve used the term disaster, because I’ve said that the greater the number of fatalities, the greater the tragedy.”

Oh ok, so we’re now talking about tragedy rather than disaster (or grief).

Do you mean tragedy as in Shakespearean terms, or Greek?

Because it seems to me that if one individual dies that’s the greatest possible tragedy that could befall that particular individual.

Or is there a certain number of deaths that constitutes a “greater tragedy” according to barometer of the YoM Scale of Tragedies™?

It would be helpful if you could clarify which YoM Scale carries the most gravity, as we’re clocking up a fair list:

    The YoM Scale of Disasters™

    The YoM Scale of Grief™

    and now…

    The YoM Scale of Tragedies™

    Is there a hierarcy?

    Please feel free to explain.
