Australians ‘totally smashed’ at home during COVID-19

COVID-19 is driving us to drink. Literally.

Isolation, boredom and anxiety have affected people’s drinking habits and some may struggle to return to pre-coronavirus levels of alcohol consumption, health experts warn.

“Drinking more is a bit like a ratchet, it can go up quite easily but can very hard to get it back down” says Richard Piper, the chief executive of Alcohol Change UK.

“And if home is a place you now associate with drinking, and you’re in it all day everyday, that has a risk.”

The clinical director of Sydney’s drug and alcohol centre Turning Point, Dr Matthew Frei, says getting used to drinking alone at home can become the “wedge of problem drinking”.

“It’s easy to drink at home, you don’t have to worry about driving, it’s a place of safety and comfort,” he says.

“There’s no one monitoring you, and, especially if you’re not working, there’s less barriers to start drinking earlier in the day.”

Frei says it’s not just the increased amount of alcohol being consumed that’s an issue.

“People are saying they are drinking out of boredom or anxiety,” he says.

“But when the social restrictions from the pandemic are lifted, the feelings of hopelessness or sadness, especially in people who might have lost their jobs, won’t just disappear.

“So there’s a possibility we may have a significant public health issue on our hands, with more people using alcohol to self-medicate.”

National polling by YouGov Galaxy, commissioned by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) found that since the pandemic hit, 20 per cent of Australians say they are purchasing more alcohol.

Within this group, 70 per cent said they were consuming more alcohol than they used to, with one third drinking on a daily basis.

FARE CEO Caterina Giorgi said that 32 per cent of those who reported buying more alcohol admitted they were concerned about either their own increased level of drinking or someone else’s in the household.

Almost the same number of people said they were drinking more to cope with anxiety and stress.

“Alcohol sales are up over the past month and while the alcohol industry wants you to believe that people aren’t actually drinking that alcohol, this research reveals the truth,” she said.

    I recall someone during the last economic downturn putting forward the wonderful idea that we could get local handymen to do peoples gutters. Now, this, from people who want to privatise everything ROFL

    I also recall that the Federal Government back then got the blame for everything, even though, as now, it was up to the states and contractors to administer appropriately

    Seems the buck always stops at … one particular party

    So, was it the feds fault back then, and, why is not now?

    If you google “Ruby Princess” I think you’ll find there’s plenty of political fallout from that.

    But… that was a single, outrageous, public health endangering failure.

    This one is systemic.

    For months, the Victorian government-
    * Decided to use poorly trained contractors
    * Declined the offer of using the army
    * Didn’t assign police
    * Didn’t have systems and oversight
    * Allowed guards and those in isolation to f***
    * Didn’t ensure protective equipment (eg condoms) was used
    * Take any opportunity to conduct auditing and review over several months

    All this is systemic failure

    The Ruby Princess was an outrageous failure but a single one.

    This government has demonstrated continuous incompetence and negligence over several months!

    Luckily we didn’t use the army, because that would have been a bad look ! And with our government, appearances matter above all else!

    So the poorly trained security guards-
    * Drove ubers if the security work wasn’t available
    * Shared lifts with those likely to be infected
    * Didn’t use PPE (including condoms!)
    * Had 5 minutes of training

    So, Andrews has decided that we need a 2 month enquiry to find out what went wrong!!

    Does anyone else have an opinion on the likely findings of the judicial review! Here’s my tip!

    * The Premier was unduly influenced by Mr S Newman seeking to play golf
    * The Government should have ensured security guards were provided with at least 8 minutes of training
    * Sexual contact between security guards and those in isolation should not have occurred during ordinary working hours, such activities should only take place during overtime
    * Peter Dutton didn’t receive enough political opprobrium for the Ruby Princess
    * The Victorian Government is trying very hard!

    Yes, one comment was about penalty rate changes in hospitality not being the thin end of the wedge for nurses penalty rates.

    The other was about the trend in the mining industry to rely on technology rather than labour.

    I’m happy to discuss both issues but they aren’t related to the state ALP government engaging poorly trained contractors to guard people in isolation.

    Can you explain how those comments are related to the current issue?

    And by the way, it would also be hilarious to see the OHS risk assessment for the security guards.

    Those responsible would have asked – “what are the most significant risks? ” No doubt they would have identified-
    * Getting stuck in a lift
    * Eating hotel food
    * Ill fitting uniforms

    They obviously didn’t think there was a risk of contracting covid 19, otherwise they would have addressed the risk.

    But clearly the government didn’t bother to check and audit their risk assessment either!

    That’s negligence!

    And people here blame, Dan Andrews, (for everything under sun oops clouds oops rain oops wind oops sun … fkn Melbourne weather!).

    That’s as dumb as saying he forced these people to “escape” Victoria’s lockdown

    Authorities intercepted the man, aged in his late 50s, at Central on Friday after he arrived on an XPT from Melbourne.

    When health authorities on the ground asked the man to produce his driver’s licence, it revealed an address located within one of the 10 Victorian hotspot suburbs in lockdown after a spike in COVID-19 cases.

    The man now faces up to $11,000 in fines or six months behind bars.

    “Let this be a message for Victorians from a hot spot, do not come to NSW unless you have a very good reason or have an exemption to come here, particularly for a medical reason, or something else extraordinary,” Mr Hazzard told reporters on Friday.

    “Don’t come to NSW on a half-baked situation which shows you have a licence coming from a hot spot but then claim you don’t come from there. We’ll assume you did and that’s how you’ll be treated.”

    On Wednesday a woman was intercepted by health authorities, also at Sydney’s Central Station, after arriving from Melbourne. She had travelled to Sydney despite showing symptoms of the virus and had also failed to wait to receive her pending test results.

    Planning teams have been embedded in state coordination centres in Victoria, Queensland, the NT and Western Australia, with teams also on hand to assist the other states and territory.

    Defence has also set up contact-tracing teams to work with New South Wales and Queensland. “These ADF teams will provide logistics, transport, health and general planning assistance as the workload of civilian medical teams continues to increase as more Australians are diagnosed with, or affected by, Covid-19,” the defence minister, Linda Reynolds, said in a statement released this week.

    NSW learnt their lesson from the Ruby Princess, and didn’t just leave the quarantine security to guards with 3 minutes of training, who, according to The Age-
    * Had sex with those they were supposed to be guarding
    * Neglected to practice safe social distancing
    * Spread the virus to their families, and their communities

    And Victoria’s CMO warned the ALP government of his concerns over a month ago!

    Now we have 36 suburbs and over 300,000 people in lockdown with more to come.

    Do you think all this represents a failure, or are you willing to make excuses for all this?

    By the way TB, do you think a risk assessment, and auditing of it, might have been useful?

    Don’t you think this type of transmission might have been foreseen and therefore the safety systems more rigorously enforced?

    Not sure what “opening of everlasting” means but that’s beside the point. All decisions to ease restrictions were made by Daniel Andrews and the Victorian government.

    The states outsourced it to themselves. You cheered on Victoria and New South Wales when they closed schools – contrary to the advice of the federal health authorities and the urgings of Scott Morrison – under federalism principles they’ve recently embraced. Just explain why this is the fault of the federal government that the Victorian state government chose to engage poorly trained contractors for isolation supervision rather than the military. That is the primary cause of it getting out of control.

    *NSW accepted the federal government’s offer of the military
    * Victoria declined it.

    The left consider use of the military for such purposes a bad look, so “the optics” were given a higher priority than good health policy in the public interest

  97. Tom R permalink

    That is the primary cause of it getting out of control.

    The primary cause is because individuals didn’t adhere to regulations.

    Of course, in the free markets ‘individual responsibility’, that is now the governments fault

    “It is a stark reality check of how rapidly things can change. The disappointing reality is that the problems in Melbourne’s hot spots are directly linked to failures to follow established and successful public health guidelines,” he said.

    “Against the expert medical advice, we have seen a range of failures relating to family and social events not following physical distance requirements, numerous quarantine breaches, and the irresponsible actions from elite sportsmen.”

    Are you joking?

    Even Andrews admits that it was the poor practice of isolation guards that started this.

    That was the specific decision of the government, they didn’t want the look of having the military keeping civilians locked up.

    This is the outcome of having a government that puts “the optics” above good policy.

    This government was so red hot in policing people having a picnic, or driving, or fishing (three times the fines) but they couldn’t find police resources to guard the most likely source of an outbreak.

    I’m sorry for your brain defect. But Ida Bae Wells appears not to have a brain at all.

    First, when you have utter cunts like Keisha Lance Bottoms tolerating mob rule in police free zones it comes as no surprise that violence and murder rule. Keisha already has the blood of a murdered eight year old girl on her hands. She could have got the police to do their job, put down the mob and restore order. Instead she chose to have the police stand down. Its not the failure of the police to do their job it is the failure of mongrel leftist politicians and administrators to support the police and permit them to do their job.

    Instead Ida Bae and their ilk are into defunding the police. Hence the murder rate in Democrat-run cities is through the roof. Anyone actually cares about black lives she would want to enable the police to do their job properly. They would want to take measures to strengthen the black family, encourage black fathers to be involved with their children, reduce black unemployment and support charter schools to allow school choice for poor black families instead of forcing them into local school hell-holes controlled by and run for the benefit of teacher unions.

    Black lives matter is essentially a revolutionary Marxist organisation. Dead blacks only matter in that they are a recruiting tool for them. They are continuation of Occupy and other revolutionary attempts to subvert civilisation. In the end they are just another Year Zero cult.

    Interesting questions Tom R. (I didn’t get the screenshot reference but I can be a bit obtuse sometimes).

    At the moment we have a slightly lower death rate than NZ. And I think we kinda morphed into the NZ elimination thing anyway.

    What to do now? (Apart from quarantining the filthy Victorians)

    We could continue to slowly re-open. We are about to see how effective tracing can be (or not). If that can be managed well we might have more options.

    We could wait until the rest of the world eliminates the virus before opening our borders but that sounds a little harsh.

    We could go for herd immunity in the under 50s and lock the rest of us down.

    I don’t know. I’m just grateful to be swimming again. And I’m actually DJing tonight though I don’t expect the bar to be crowded.

    China is renowned for its long term planning … and obtuse “diplomacy”

    This morning, on page 380, I came across this little gem of information. Do the math!

    China’s senior Deputy Prime Minister, Deng Xiaoping, visited the USA in 1979 and said:

    “Mr. President, (Jimmy Carter), you asked for a sketch of our strategy.

    To realize our Four Modernizations**, we need a prolonged period of a peaceful environment. But even now we believe the Soviet Union will launch a war. But if we act well and properly, it is possible to postpone it. China hopes to postpone a war for twenty-two years.36

    Under such a premise, we are not recommending the establishment of a formal alliance, but each should act on the basis of our standpoint and coordinate our activities and adopt necessary measures. This aim could be attained. If our efforts are to no avail, then the situation will become more and more empty.”

    ** Goals first set forth by Deng Xiaoping to strengthen the fields of agriculture, industry, defense, science, and technology in China

    Top bureaucrats warned senior health officials at the beginning of the Andrews government’s botched hotel quarantine scheme that security guards were ill-equipped for the work and demanded police be called in to take control.

    The first email raising concerns was sent by a senior bureaucrat at the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions within 24 hours of the March 28 launch of the program.

    It was addressed to several senior officials at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), which was the leading agency for the day-to-day management of hotel quarantine,

    The state’s Chief Health Officer said on Monday it was “conceivable” that all the active COVID-19 cases in Victoria stemmed from Melbourne’s problem quarantine hotel program.

    He is the Head of State………………………..and an Australian one to boot.

    And even if you disagree with that he didn’t mislead her at all by not telling her of his decision. He simply gathered information on what his powers were from the Queen’s private secretary, Anthony Mason and he asked Whitlam himself for government advice in relation to Bob Ellicot’s views. That alone took 16 days to get. He also requested permission to speak to Sir Garfield Barwick which was refused.

    So dont try and say he only took on a narrow number of views. It was Whitlam who stifled him in seking advice

    The majority of new cases here were caused by government incompetence, the same government who for months told us masks were not necessary. Now they are mandating masks under threat of punishment.

    The successful management of the pandemic by the Victorian ALP Government-
    * 2000 cases per week
    * Highest fines
    * Most fines
    * Toughest restrictions
    * Longest restrictions
    * Masks don’t help
    * Yes they do

    Yes, the Andrews government inspires such public confidence!

    How can we have almost 500 cases in a day??!!
    Our government has done everything possible to stop this virus!!
    * Stopped people from playing golf and fishing
    * Issued fines to people alone in their cars
    * Used world class isolation security practices, with expert guards/uber drivers who have serveral minutes of training

    This outbreak in Victoria is just bad luck!

    How can we have almost 500 cases in a day??!!

    Hard to tell. Hard to tell

    Worryingly, Mr Andrews said, data showed huge numbers of Victorians ignoring health orders – 90 per cent of people tested between July 7-21 did not self-isolate between the time they first felt sick and having the test.

    More than half did not self-isolate while waiting for their test results.

    But let’s blame the public! Because NSW, Qld, NT, WA, SA & Tas are all so much more careful in complying with the government restrictions

    In the place where most people assumed it would once winter hit.

    Because NSW, Qld, NT, WA, SA & Tas are all so much more careful in complying with the government restrictions

    NSW is a prime example of that we are NOT more careful. Their numbers are only now starting the climb. Time will tell if they do better than Victoria. But it’s becoming clearer, we were lucky it first hit in our summer (or end of), the cold truly seems to be a factor

    Andrews blames tthe public because they aren’t listening to him.

    Yes, blame those that are receiving the message, rather than those that are responsible for delivering it.

    People have stopped listening to him, because they don’t trust him.

    He f***ed up – public health, the economy, trust.

    He won’t last when he’s resorted to blaming people for not listening to him.

    I bet you blame the cop who caught you speeding … probably along the lines of “why aren’t you out catching criminals” …

    I have it on awful authority that you test too many Mexicans …

    BTW, have you had your test yet?

    BTW, ask for a Montreal Test while your waiting …

    Here’s some commonsense/common sense/common-sense

    If you’re one of those mask-hating patriots, I have some good news!

    There’s an alternative to affixing an affordable and effective piece of fabric to your face when you must leave the house.

    And best of all, it’s completely covered by Medicare.

    Introducing the mechanical ventilator, which can breathe on your behalf when COVID-19 has ravaged your respiratory system to the point where you can’t.

    If you absolutely refuse to wear a mask for yourself – and for the benefit of others – then you could soon be acquainted with this device.

    People have stopped listening to him, because … of a rancid, publicly funded campaign against the science and policies they are trying to implement. The media and libs need to accept their role in urging people to not only ‘get out from under the doona’ when Victoria clearly were not ready to, and to actually ignore public health warnings.

    But nah, blame it all on Dan instead.

    Are you seriously suggesting that a catastrophic government failure like the hotel quarantine fiasco can be blamed, even partly, on the opposition – because they didn’t agree with everything the government was doing, and said so?

    a catastrophic government failure l

    From all unsubstantiated reports to date, this is all because of ONE person who did not follow the rules. Not sure how you get plural, or catastrophic failure from that, but, making things up is the new news, so, keep at it 😉

    Meanwhile, we’re in for a wild ride. How good is Stimulus!

    Yes you’re right Tom R, there’s no amount of risk analysis and safety planning that could have foreseen that there might be transmission between security guards and the people in isolation.

    Safety risk analysis could (possibly) identify risks like-
    * hotel food
    * stress caused by a grumpy receptionist
    * getting stuck in a lift with an office supplies salesman

    But no one could have anticipated this! I mean, the Health Minister is a former commercial lawyer, who would have a lot of experience in risk management. Why would this occur to her?

    The minister responsible for engagement of the contractors is a former union official, how could the safety of employees be expected to be on his radar?

    Several minutes of training to people who otherwise deliver pizzas is more than enough!!

    As you have said in the past, this is just bad luck.
