THE MORRISON GOVERNMENT is heading for a devastating election defeat with a new Morgan poll showing Labor has a ten point lead over the Government on the election-deciding two-party preferred basis.
The news comes on the heels of a cavalcade of corruption allegations plaguing senior members of the LNP and a mounting reputation as a compulsive liar Morrison can’t seem to shirk.
This is the largest two-party preferred lead held by the ALP since the 2019 Federal Election and exceeds the the ALP’s lead during the height of the ‘2020 Bushfires Crisis’ (ALP 55%, LNP 45%).
Voting analysis by State shows the ALP leading on a two party preferred basis in all six States – even Queensland.
In a concerning sign for the Government the ALP’s biggest leads are in Victoria and NSW.
The ALP’s improvement in Victoria comes after large protests against the Andrews Government on a range of issues including new legislation on ‘extraordinary’ powers for the Premier to declare a pandemic, the Andrews’ Government enforcement of vaccine mandates and tough restrictions on Victorians who are choosing to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19.

While it’s a claim often made, fact is it’s the government that’s spending government money. Yes the dollars allocated once belonged to taxpayers (including big taxpayers such as BHP, big 4 Banks and other non-voting entities – as well as some citizens) but that ‘belonging’ was in the past.

Personally, we don’t get an age/disability etc pension BUT we do benefit significantly from what economists sometimes call tax expenditures. We get benefits via dividend imputations (via super AND other investments), we don’t pay tax on super income etc etc.
Again, we are ‘leaners’ and proud of that. After all it’s Citizens who own this Nation and not corporations whether they be local or foreign. Don’t like it? Then go elsewhere.
Thus we are an effective drain on the public purse and not effective (net) taxpayers. (Hockey was right in that sense.). As Citizens we rely on big taxpayers like BHP, Banks, Miners etc (all non-citizens and therefore non-voters) to be net, effective taxpayers to pay, and meet their legal obligations – as imposed by Citizens via their government.

It should be mentioned that the Commonwealth was debt free twice in the lifetimes of most Australians. In 1972 and in 2007 thanks to the Coalition we were debt free.
Both times Labor was then elected and trashed the budget. Whitlam/ALP was handed zero govt debt in 1972. Whitlam then trashed the budget and govt debt kept increasing until 1996. Howard/Costello in an amazing achievement not only reduced govt debt, they took it to zero by 2007.
Then Rudd/ALP was elected, trashed the budget and who knows how long govt debt will keep increasing. When Whitlam trashed the budget debt increased for 25 years.

If you judge governments by what they do, Australian governments for the last decade gave preferred to have more debt. Despite what they say, the act like proponents of Modern Monetary Theory

Re school achievement standards here in Australia and elsewhere, across time. As always, some are in decline while some are on the rise.
Of course it depends on what standards one is talking about.
At least three categories are possible. First we have needs based standards. Once, students and adults needed to do arithmetic calculations in their head. Employees (some) needed to write in ‘copper plate’. Many needed to shoe horses and pick up their shit on a shovel. The standard (relatively speaking) was quite high. Now it’s in decline. The need has changed.
Way back in the 1820s, Charles Babbage conceptualized the computer. But the vast majority had no idea what he was even talking about and the standard of student achievement was therefore very low. But no-one cared because there was no need .
While one could go on and refer to norm referenced standards and criterion referenced standards, perhaps it might be better to return to Oregon and look a little deeper there.
Firstly, the (bisexual) Mayor is a Democrat and one might note that Democrats (generally) have deep political roots in most (but not all) minority communities. So that might explain why such groups received a mention in the ‘presser’. Good politicians never forget their base.

As for ‘Liberals’ and a philosophy behind them. Yes there is a set of philosophical principles behind liberalism but to suggest that those who currently travel under that banner have any appreciation or adherences to those liberal attitudes, values and the like is more than a stretch. To some extent, all elections should be about trust and not only in government but other societal institutions as well including the media. Sadly that’s evaporated.

I think there remains plenty of efficiency to be extracted from government services. There are entire departments that only exist to cover the backside of politicians, this occurs at each tier of government.

Oppositions (regardless of where they sit on the ideological divide) recognised that making FOI requests was a worthwhile ‘fishing expedition’. And at a number of levels.
First, they cast their application as broad as possible. In so doing, they received a predictable response along the lines – Could you narrow the focus?
You see every Department, Agency, etc (government and non-government), as well as all individuals mentioned in the documents has to be consulted to see if they have any objections to their release. Many do, arguing that their view(s) were given in confidence and not for public consumption. And so on.
The FOI Officer has to make a decision which then can be appealed to an FOI Commissioner. And so it goes. On and on. Back and forth. (Only in government never in the private sector.)
These ‘delays’ then become grist for the mill in terms of media releases. Indeed the ‘delay’ often becomes the story. What is the government hiding? etc (A media headline that’s simply ‘Too easy’.)
As I recall, every State in Australia as well as the Commonwealth modified its FOI legislation. Even then, many Ministers, both State and Federal, refused to authorise releases.
Today FOI is still problematic in Australia. Are Cabinet Documents confidential? What about National Cabinet submissions and decisions? Morrisson argues that they should be off limits.

Obviously you followed the link in my original comment on this topic. I was well aware that the Board backtracked after the decision became public. The backdown does nothing to rehabilitate the Board’s reputation. Rather, it shows the Board is embarrassed at becoming an object of international scorn.
In fact, the Board’s administrator, Helen Fisher (Superintendent of Education), told the organiser of the event that the Board’s equity department had decided not to support Nadia Murad’s talk. When shown material regarding the nature if ISIS the hideous Fisher doubled down and sent the organiser a copy of the board’s policy on selecting equitable, culturally relevant, and responsive reading materials.
Mongrel Fisher also told the book club organiser that the Board would not be supporting a talk by Marie Henein, the daughter of Egyptian immigrants and one of Canada’s most prominent lawyers. This on the basis that Henein had, five years ago, defended an innocent man.
The Board’s spokesperson did not explain how it is that its Superintendent of Education and equity department felt empowered to act as they did. Nor did he explain what disciplinary action would be be taken against them for the breach of procedure which resulted in the destruction of the credibility of the Board.
So yes, the Board did back down. Marie Henein had them dead to rights when she said: “There are words for this. Misunderstanding is not one of them,”
