The law is clear: Guide Dogs Australia must lose its charitable status.

April 20, 2022

GUIDE DOGS VICTORIA IS IN FULL DAMAGE CONTROL MODE after its CEO Karen Hayes appeared in flyers emblazoned with Liberal Party colours backing Josh Frydenberg in his push to be re-elected as the Member for Kooyong.

Under the heading “Why I’m supporting Josh Frydenberg,” Hayes, pictured clutching a puppy is quoted as saying “Time and time again, Josh has shown his genuine care for Guide Dogs Victoria and the people with low vision and blindness we serve.”

However, the move appears to directly contravene Federal Government guidelines that stipulate that a charity must not “promote (or oppose) a political party or candidate for political office.”

The law is clear. Such conduct would effectively disqualify the organisation from being a registered charity.

Guide Dogs Victoria’s social media accounts have been inundated with complaints, with many saying they will no longer donate to the charity.

In response to the backlash, Guide Dogs Victoria’s Chairman Iain Edwards has said the Board had “no prior knowledge of the distribution of this material and does not endorse it.”

“The board has … requested that this material be immediately removed from circulation. We will make no further comment during this process.”

It’s time to go Karen.

It truly is hard to know why the Solomons would want to deal with China, when they have ‘friends’ like us

Scott Morrison has been accused of causing an extraordinary rift between Australia and Pacific countries by the prime minister of Fiji, who said the Australian prime minister’s insulting behaviour while at the Pacific Islands Forum in Tuvalu would push nations closer to China.

China’s “Belt and Road” initiative is now in the Pacific. Perhaps they might sell us some submarines? Only while we wait for …

    But maybe not.

  15. April 20, 2022 8:03 pm

    A few facts:

Australia spends just 0.23% of our gross national income, or 23 cents in every $100, on Australian aid. This is the lowest level ever in our nation’s 60-plus years of using aid to tackle poverty.

Australia’s aid budget ranks a low 19th out of the 29 wealthy OECD member nations, despite the fact that we have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.

Perhaps we should acknowledge that we will never match China when it comes to military power but we at least might be competitive when it comes to “soft power”.

If we adopted a different “ideological” bent we might have a sovereign wealth fund (like Sweden) which would allow us to provide free university education to Pacific Islanders (up to and including Masters level) as well as all Australians.

    Missed opportunities!

How many transgender females actually compete in elite sport?

Perhaps an easy way would be to develop a sports body for transgender competition … as we have for those with disability … simply bagging transgender people is not the answer.

Has transgender become the latest in the religious, FAR right agenda against LGBTQIA+ people … FFS! their god made ’em in his image …

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them

So many arguments in that one statement … by a man writing scripture …

The attorney general, Michaelia Cash, rejected a push for changes to the Sex Discrimination Act aimed at excluding transgender people from single-sex sport late last year, despite Scott Morrison embracing the issue throughout the election campaign.

In February, the Tasmanian senator Claire Chandler introduced into the Senate the Save Women’s Sport bill, which the controversial Liberal candidate Katherine Deves has claimed she helped develop.

Morrison has praised Chandler’s bill as “terrific”, and revealed he had encouraged the conservative senator to pursue the legislation, saying he believed she was “outspoken and brave” and “a champion for women’s sport”. He has also said that he shares “their views” on the issue.

I think society is generally moving to be more tolerant and inclusive. That’s great
Trans women will be given even opportunity to compete on their merits. Hopefully this will provide even more support for those that feel isolated
However as numbers increase, in sport the competition isn’t “on their merits”
Trans women maintain a significant advantage in strength and speed years after their transition.
That’s why it is better to address the issue before their are even larger numbers and higher expectations of competing in women’s sport.
You’ll have to excuse me if I don’t regard this as “shallow thinking”

Take for example the Olympic distance triathlon.
    It’s a 1500m swim, 40km on the bike, and then a 10km run.
A study in the US found that in running, trans women retained a 12% advantage in middle distance running for years after the transition.
    On a 10km.rum, that’s about 4 minutes.
If the same advantage applied to swimming and cycling, they would be perhaps 20 minute in front.
    THATS HUGE!
It’s the difference between being in the pack and being on the podium.
Address it before it becomes a running sore in women’s sport

The idea of someone beating her for a place because they had a male puberty doesn’t sit well with me.
And there may be few in numbers now, but it is entirely reasonable to expect that this won’t remain the case – as acceptance in society increases, and access to treatment improves.

People that follow their doctor’s advice regarding the best medical treatment for asthma, for example. Or certain treatments for high blood pressure and heart disease.
These people aren’t trying to cheat, but their medical treatment renders them ineligible.

The only credible study (it seems) on whether trans women have an advantage in sport, found that they were 12% faster over a middle distance run years after the transition.
That’s significant. If they had that margin in a 1500m swim, the would have almost a 2 lap advantage.
It’s equivalent to 3 miles head start in a marathon. It’s well over a kilometre in a 10,000m race.

Only because ‘motherhood and apple pie’ weren’t offered as options. Fact is, these so-called “highest concerns” are rarely ‘vote changers’. While there are any number of ‘feel good’ notions out and about, the reasons why citizens vote as they do are much closer to home.

Further, the polls proceed as though this was a popular election for a President. The polling that matters is that undertaken in ‘marginal seats’ and we rarely get access to that.

    Note well this example:

… our total revenue from the North Sea was just £0.2 billion – 300 miles to the north east, to Norway and Stavanger, the country’s oil twin with Aberdeen producing almost exactly the same amount of oil, total revenue was £9bn.

The difference? Norway’s oil and gas industry is state-owned. Ours is privatised.

    https://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/19716393.actually-happened-scotlands-trillions-north-sea-oil-boom/

And so are Australia’s natural resources – privatised – almost one and all.

Thus we have OUR wealth transferred to the likes of Clive and Gina who grow fat (both literally and figuratively) at our expense.

Although maybe not, because your argument recently was that (even though Australia’s and Russia’s economies are the same size), Russia has more credibility because they are a nuclear power.
So does a strong military provide international credibility or not?

  93. April 25, 2022 2:56 pm

Dear oh dear ToM. Perhaps we might aspire to some conceptual clarity which is essential when engaging in dialogue to avoid unnecessary disagreement and to promote mutual understanding.

You have a worrying habit of referring to size of economy when the possibility of nuclear conflict is on the table and I can’t understand why. It’s a little like saying: I have a drawer full of kitchen knives and I’m about to confront a ‘nutter’ who only has machine guns. . Comparing the metaphorical apples with oranges seems unproductive.

No doubt you are aware, Russia has/had something in the order of 6 000 nuclear war heads. The USA has/had 4 000. China has at least 350 at last count. Australia has ZERO! Not a one. And there’s nothing (even) on order.

When it comes to nuclear power, we have no credibility. Unlike Russia (regardless of GDP comparative size).

If it comes to a conflict/war between China and Australia, I suggest we buy any number of white flags. Or are we simply going to counter with Morrison’s red line threats?

There seems to be a belief in Australia that the USA will come to our defense and will fight to the death to protect us regardless of the consequences. Naive!

If (and it’s a big IF at this stage) Australia is to win heart and minds in the Pacific region, then it can only be done through soft power . My understanding is Australia offers about 30 scholarships a year to the region. Laughable.

And speaking of laughs , we (both major political groupings) plan to continue fossil fuel mining.

    Very sound

  96. April 25, 2022 3:58 pm

ToM – in the USA the problems of guns in schools (for example) is tackled by proposals to arm teachers. Fight fire with fire! A one-track mind.

Perhaps we might think outside the box, at least on the odd occasion? Or do we really want to be the proverbial meat in the China/USA sandwich.

It comes down to the fact that China and the USA will pursue what they perceive to be in their own interests. Perhaps Australia should do that as well? And in the short to medium term(s), that (our interest) might involve us keeping our heads below the parapet and staying well clear of an arms race we’re destined to lose.

What seems important to Australia’s interests, as a middle-sized country of the Asia-Pacific, is for both China and the USA to draw in their horns, curb their mutual paranoias, and seek some mutually tolerable accommodation.

Perhaps that might be a role we could play. But for that to happen Dutton et al need to be retired.

ToM – as for North Korea, it bet the rent years and years ago after what the USA did (with bombs) when the War (and resistance) was well and truly over.

In the early 1950s, during the Korean War, the US dropped more bombs on North Korea than it had dropped in the entire Pacific theater during World War II. This carpet bombing, which included 32,000 tons of napalm, often deliberately targeted civilian as well as military targets, devastating the country far beyond what was necessary to fight the war. Whole cities were destroyed, with many thousands of innocent civilians killed and many more left homeless and hungry.

Yep far beyond what was necessary ! Talk about war crimes!

  110. April 25, 2022 10:22 pm

    ToM re:

chemical or biological war is possible

Indeed they are! But the nuclear option is not on your radar? So why not? Suspect it’s very much on the minds of the USA and NATO (as it should be). Hence their rather ‘limited’ response as exemplified with regard to ‘no fly’ zones. But its aggression also appears to be ‘ratcheting’ up.

Seems to me that Putin can’t afford to be seen to lose this war. And for a whole variety of reason. This is an Empire on its last legs and while it’s not the first Empire to be historically interred, it’s the first time that an Empire has the ‘nuclear’ option.

Which raises the ‘tense’ implied in your comment above:

Ukraine has proved that invasion of a well equipped small nation is more trouble than it is worth.

Why assume that this war is somehow over and therefore concrete conclusions can therefore be drawn? Where is the evidence (that’s it’s all over)? The ‘proof’ and all that.

And what meaning do you give to “more trouble than it’s worth”? In whose opinion?

Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Putin seems to have ‘grand delusions’. Wants to be a successful ‘historical’ figure. Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, (who ‘acquired’ Ukraine) and Putin the Great (who … lost it)? Putin has a sense of history that should not be ignored. Possibly already designed his headstone to be installed in Novodevichy Cemetery.

He’s not going down without a fight. And as an ex KGB operative he’s probably on top of his own internal security so a coup seems an unlikely option.

Let’s not get too hairy chested. Australia is but a minnow.

I, for one, welcome our new autistic overlord. (I just wish he’d stop living in the past.)

This bloke seems to think Musk got a good deal:

Gareth Brown is the Co-Portfolio Manager for Forage Funds’ International Shares Fund, which has a stake in Twitter on behalf of Australian retail investors.

He describes Twitter as “the one that got away”, saying that despite the offer giving investors a “decent premium” Twitter never realised its true value as a public company.

“Musk has bought Twitter on a platform of delivering free speech to the world. With a bit of nous, he’s going to make immense amounts of profit too,” Mr Brown said.

“Likely hundred of billions of dollars. Unfortunately, our own investors will see almost none of it.”

gulf” between its current value and the value it could be under ideal management and execution.

“Executing Twitter’s difficult turnaround after years of falling short of potential while paying out immense, undeserved riches to staff via stock based compensation? That’s now somebody else’s problem,” Mr Brown said.

“But more strongly, I feel disappointment. I’m disappointed that, over the years, the Twitter board couldn’t do more to exploit that colossal gulf in value between what Twitter is and what Twitter could be.

“And now, opting to hand the baton to Musk, that same board has done little to extract blood from the new owner to pay the old owners for all that unrealised potential.”

The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all

    and

By “free speech”, I simply mean that which matches the law.

I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law.

If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect.

Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.

There is a graph in the link below which explains why our car industry died. People stopped buying aussie made cars. Commodores went from 80,000 sales/year to 30,000 by 2012. Holden needed to sell 40,000 to break even.

Same goes for the Ford sedan. Sales went from 70,000/year to 15,000.

Apparently people wanted SUVs and Holden was making sedans. While price and quality may have been an issue the main issue was the market did not want sedans. So blame management for making cars nobody wanted for the death of the auto industry.

Experts concur that Twitter being purchased by a private entity instead of publicly owned by shadowy corporate interests and foreign governments will help secure Twitter’s place as a free speech platform. Other changes, such as an open-source algorithm, clear and fairly enforced rules, and a commitment to the free exchange of ideas are expected to accomplish more for freedom and human advancement than anything Republican congressmen have ever done in their entire careers.

“Man, why didn’t I think of doing something like that?” said the Republican Senator. “If you vote for me, I’ll form a committee after the election season to explore the reasons we didn’t think of that!”
To save face, Republicans have promised to cook up something extra special for voters next year in the form of a strong resolution saying free speech is good.

I read your link at 3.15PM. It said this

The result reflects another torrid month for large car sales, with the Commodore falling 18 per cent compared to January 2011 and the Ford Falcon pared by a fifth to just 931 units
(click to read our separate story on Falcon’s January sales result).

Your link was published early 2012. For the rest of the year and into 2013 locally made car sales crashed. People stopped buying locally made and purchased imports.

We should blame management for the loss of our car industry because they made cars nobody wanted to drive.

It just shows that money does not solve problems. Holden/Ford were given mega bucks and they just used taxpayers money to pay themselves higher wages and make cars nobody wanted to drive

You still don’t understand (like many of your LNP supporters) that the LNP taxes POORER people not RICH people and the POORER people PAY for the RICH people who don’t pay taxes …

As a small business (partnership) we paid FIVE taxes … two personal taxes, business tax and provisional tax … and administered GST! And we had to calculate every one of them ourselves then we had to PAY (by law) to have an accountant to transfer OUR data from a CD to their accounts program … print it out and sign it, send it to the ATO and give it back to us …

I find the whole Hunter Biden fixation interesting.

When did (any) Trump ever admit a poor or wrong decision?…little lone embrace or publicly acknowledge a family member’s drug addiction and fallen status? Pretty sure the Biden family has not hidden that it’s real.

A bit of a contrast to Don Junior’s behaviour, and the various hypocrisies(sic) obviously clouding the entire fucking cabal.

If “corrupt, demented, kiddy-fiddling”, describes the current POTUS, it’s hard to ignore the very same appropriate tagging of the previous buffoon.

  235. April 28, 2022 6:48 pm

NoS – there’s a ‘paradigmatic’ shift in economic thinking underway. And it will continue.

New ‘theories’, generating new ‘methodologies’, giving rise to new ‘facts’, ‘meanings’ and ‘understandings’ are part of life. Read about it here (at a high level of generality).

    https://www.investopedia.com/terms/h/heterodox-economics.asp#:~:text=Heterodox%20economics%20is%20the%20analysis,orthodox%20schools%20of%20economic%20thought.

Once upon a time, many people thought the world had to be flat – otherwise people and things would fall over the edge. Advances in ‘theoretical’ understandings gave rise to new ‘facts’ etc. These days we don’t fear people ‘falling over the edge’.

Entertain the notion that ‘economics’ as a ‘discipline’ will also undergo ‘change’. (It’s how the academic world advances.) Read the link.

It shows a picture of Crackhead in bed with his 14 year old niece. And an email where Crackhead declares his love for her. Also Crackhead admitting he was putting her in moral danger in emails to his parents.

Under Delaware law any person who suspects that a minor is in danger of abuse is obliged to report it. Instead the family discussed how to cover up the matter. Dementia Joe should be in jail now. But ignore the laptop. Nothing to see here. No further investigation warranted.

Wholesale power prices in Australia’s main electricity market continued to rise in the first three months of 2022, more than doubling the cost a year earlier, with the increase blamed mostly on more costly fossil fuels and the falling reliability of coal-fired power plants.

Renewable energy, meanwhile, grew its share of the market to more than one-third, pushing carbon emissions from the largest polluting sector to new lows, according to the quarterly energy dynamics report from the Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo).

Where should the line be drawn?

“You just throw money at Wagga,” Mr Maguire says during the phone call on July 30, 2018.

“I’ll throw money at Wagga, don’t you worry about that,” Ms Berejiklian replied. The pair also discuss the “bureaucrats” opposition to a stadium in the regional town.

“I can overrule them,” Ms Berejiklian said

And she could legally overrule them. But as Barnaby argues:

We elect politicians, not bureaucrats He said.

    Now we have this:

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation has taken the credit for an $11 million federal grant to a Queensland drag racing venue in a key marginal seat
