The president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has defended unions employing staff on 457 visas, despite a union-driven campaign to clamp down on their use.
It has been revealed the Transport Workers Union (TWU) employs three officials, including a media officer, on 457 visas.
TWU secretary Tony Sheldon has previously been a strident critic of the practice, saying employers should “train Australians first and give jobs to Australians first”.
But yesterday Mr Sheldon defended the Union’s decision to employ workers on 457 visas saying that the union was “unable to find local staff for the positions.”
ACTU president Ged Kearney says there is no hypocrisy in the TWU case.
“We have never as a movement opposed 457 visas,” she told AM.
No Hypocrisy!
“I think we need to make that very clear. So there is no hypocrisy here.”
She says the union movement’s main concern with 457 visas has been “the welfare of the workers.”
“Clearly the workers being employed by these unions for whatever reason – and yes, they need to show as well, like any other employer, that they need these workers because there is a shortage – but they are not being exploited, clearly,” she said.
“These workers are being employed on Australian conditions; they’re being treated very well. I don’t see any evidence whatsoever that the rules are not being followed.”
“We are concerned however about those – and there are many, we know – who are being exploited, who are being paid less than the wages they should be being paid, who are not being treated properly in this country.
“That is what we are worried about this system and that is what I think we need to focus on when we are talking about these issues in the media.”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard launched a campaign against the use of 457 visas last month, during a week-long visit to the politically crucial region of western Sydney.
She said the visa program was “out of control” and she has repeatedly stated that jobs should be given to Australians first.

If this is the calibre of union leaders you just have to hope that Labor comes to its senses and reorganises itself to ensure that such mediocrity doesn’t end up as a parliamentarian because they’ve ‘done their time’ in the unions!

In Unionland it is the right of hard-working union hacks to reap the rewards of their corrupt politicking with a lap of honour in the Senate and an outrageous parliamentary pension. Someone earning $40,000 pa pays $5,147 pa in tax. If they are a couple each earning same its around $10,300 pa in tax.
If they work from 20 until 67 they as a couple have paid $484,100 in tax .
If they both retire at 67 in both live until 85 whereupon they kill each other they would have received 20 x $32,000 pa ($640,000)(quoting pension figure based on article in AFR)
So therefore not only has their income tax not provided for any other arms of government but it does not even cover the pension they’ll get.
So who is subsidising who ?
Who gets the bigger tax benefit from income (we obviously exclude other taxes in the example)

Living under this rotten government is like being force-fed dogshit. Rudd was useful to get the ALP into power, but he wasn’t a creature of the unions so he had to go. Thompson is your typical union boss turned pollie and has sickened the nation. Ditto former ALP president Williamson. Faction Boss Doogie Cameron and Sleazy Albanese were instrumental in keeping McDonald in office and dear old Doogie was shocked, shocked to learn that McDonald was a bad apple notwithstanding that his daughter worked for McDonald for 7 years. And union boss Maitland looks to have invested very wisely in his mining venture. And Eddie Obeid chose the NSW premiers for years and sadly NSW missed out on $100m that went his way. Oh and Gillard’s union boyfriend “Rooter” Wilson made off like a bandit as well, then the ALP closed ranks and the one decent bloke who campaigned to get the money back was beaten up by Unionland thugs.
But some people don’t get it. They have so little capacity for independent thought that they prefer to run interference for this rotten clique, and mock those people rightly outraged by blatant corruption. It is people like this who make the corruption possible in the first place. Better to stay schtum than be a rat in the ranks in Unionland. In many ways these scum are the lowest of them all. They are the ones that make it possible for Labor to victimise and vilify decent people like Gillian Sneddon who had the guts to blow the whistle on one of the many ALP pedophiles, Milton Orkopolous. It is a shame that their loyalty is not to their country but to the corrupt cabal currently in power.

If their after tax income is roughly $35K how can they possibly spend $40K plus according to you another $4K in GST and fuel tax.

There are currently 900 jobs being advertised for “Media Officer” on Seek. The TWU couldn’t find anyone qualified here. Probably all these other companies won’t find any either.
