Can someone tell me why when a jockey was allowed by stewards to ride in a Melbourne cup last year whilst under a betting scandal cloud they were not represented at the sport corruption thingy yesterday .

And we also have is it jockey Danny Nickoviich or some name like that threatening violence upon a steward resulting in a suspension and the racing industry is not involved yesterday.

If this is about illegal betting why the fuck was it restricted to football and cricket. Racing is our biggest sport betting industry by far.

Oh hang on its footy season. Lets get thommo and Rudd off the front pages .

    Look over there

What’s with all this drugs-in-sport hysteria? Nobody charged, let alone convicted. Sounds like an election year beat up to me. Not to mention another group of public servants (ASADA) justifying their existence. It’s akin to the police command calling a press conference to announce the release of a study confirming that drug trafficking is rife in the community.

You may recall at the time l screeched long and loud about the `embedded-media-coverage` on the day, megaphoning the speech in the international-press, but Joolya and Mr-Rabbit `cut-womens-welfare` barely got mentioned. To add to the noise, the canberra press gallery hooted about slipper resigning and totally missed the welfare-cuts. No credit was given to Windsor and Oakeshott at the time, who actually GOT slipper to resign and barely acknowledged on LatelineLand as TJ tried to wallow in the `gotch` game with Oakeshott. l consider that days so-called news poorly covered, over-blown hype with no context by all media orgs.

I think a range of them will feel quite nervous about another independent inquiry.

The HSU probably paid their officials the equivalent of a CEO running a large public hospital.

I’d imagine the ANF probably pay their branch secretaries the equivalent of a Director of Nursing.

Public Servant Union officials will get SES level remuneration.

It’s all the stuff that the membership of unions should be specifically aware of.

I have no idea what union people get paid and no particular interest either. The HSU allegations are being dealt with and in the public arena [more than I can say for corporate malfeasance].

It’s all the stuff that the membership of unions should be specifically aware of.

Yes, and the sporting fans should be aware of doping and organised crime whenever there is professional sports, gambling and huge pay packets attached to sporting and players.

Oh really, I thought it was an integral part of our culture.

Sports yes, but doping, cheating? We pride ourselves on winning fair & square. Which is why this expose needs to be in the public domain. Surely this ‘scandal’ comes as no real surprise to people? There’s something wrong with you if you are so naive to think otherwise. People need to stop having the wool pulled over their eyes with jingoism and marketing.

Sports appears to have an elevated status in australian culture, I’d prefer if all great achievements [such as academic, scientific not ‘sports scientists’ who are unqualified people, volunteering, philanthropy] were equally regarded in high esteem. Our so-called cultural egalitarianism fails some.

What if Einstein had been born in Australia?

    http://www.convictcreations.com/culture/egalitarianism.html

…Overall, Einstein probably would have found himself in the same position that almost all of Australia’s great inventors and noble prize winning scientists have found themselves in. Specifically, he would have been publicly ignored…

The coffee-3 crack was at Barry Tuckers site which he has in his site title truth in media resource center, which l called bullshit on one of his posts. lt was clearly a lop-sided post, which didn`t prove his side of story, nor disprove the other side, which l pointed out. He was just blindly agitating for outrage to harass my ABC over the `r` typo in `Juliar`. He didn`t go for `balance` either by killing my comment which was critical.

l gotta give `turnleft2013` credit though, some time ago, when l pointed out how a post read, she added more info and updated her post. Much more ethical than what Tucker is doing in my book.

This proposed Amendment is beyond me … it will “give” something that working mothers already have “the right to ask for part-time work” … but if the business doesn’t have any part-time work to offer nothing will happen … duh!

Why do politicians and public service “dabble”in business … none of them could run a shoe shine stand … not one!

Under the proposed amendments to the Fair Work Act, to be put to Parliament before the September 14 election, new mothers will for the first time have an explicit right to ask bosses for part-time work after maternity leave.

However, the government stressed it would still apply a commonsense approach and not compel employers to offer part-time work. Bosses could continue to reject requests on reasonable business grounds.

And then this is pure speculation on the part of the reporter/editor/news.com …

In a clear attempt to draw Tony Abbott into a political fight over the rights of working women, the Gillard government will this week announce the second tranche response to the Fair Work laws review.

Why is it “clear”? To “whom”?

If Tony Abbott & The Acolytes are smart … clever mmm … can figure it out are advised properly, they’ll just leave it alone … anyone with any sense (and there is a few out there) will see the Amendment for what it is pure, unadulterated BS … and probably giggle themselves silly … and the ALP will have a duty of care issue if people fall over themselves laughing …

Whose the Minister reponsible for this load of bollocks?

The Cafe needs to maintain standards if it is to remain the home of rational and civilised polticial discourse. Obviously those with form need to be banned or at least moderated. Those preferring a degenerate cacophony can always come here where a few sane voices are drowned out by immature ranters.

Minimal or no/self regulation will always allow it to happen. Especially in combination with industry lobbying govt re labelling requirements. I’m a big believer in knowing exactly what is in the food we eat all the way down the food chain. The excuse from industry [which govt allows against the public interest & good] is the cost of complying. They do not want us to know what rubbish they stick in the food we eat, what they don’t stick in [the ingredient we think we are purchasing] and where it comes from.

TB, I can’t understand how they can pay compensation to the family members, presumably because of the affect of his illness upon them [caring for him etc] and their finances, but then not acknowledge their actual employee – what weird logic is that? I would have thought that they couldn’t compensate others for something before the primary applicant’s case and outcome is determined.

I think defence gets away with far too much secrecy and non disclosure re ‘internal’ investigations etc. the results of which are never made public. The ADF is another “too big to fail” organisation which gets huge protection by governments and bailed out by the taxpayer.

    *********************************************************************************************
    AAP 11/02/2013 17:05PM AEST

“French retailers Auchan, Casino, Carrefour, Cora, Monoprix and Picard announced on Sunday they were withdrawing products provided by Findus and French producer Comigel over the horsemeat concerns.

The Findus meals were assembled by Comigel using meat that was provided by Spanghero, a meat-processing company also based in France. Comigel supplies products to companies in 16 European countries.

Spanghero in turn is said to have obtained the meat from Romania via a Cypriot dealer who had subcontracted the deal to a trader in The Netherlands.

A Romanian food industry official also pointed the finger of blame at the French importer, saying it was up to that company to verify the quality of the meat.”

    TB,

I agreed with Tom that I’d like to see AIMN succeed.

That was the reason why i made contact with Migs when it was in its early stages. I was keen to be involved to help make it a reality.

But since then, along with a few others, I became concerned that it was just turning into yet another Abbott bitch fest, and a Gillard love-in.

Subsequently I asked Migs to remove me as an author as I no longer felt that the prevailing mindset was one that I wanted to be aligned with.

Since then I’ve faced accusations from Miglo himself, without any foundation I might add, that my only intention was to “destabilise” the site from the outset, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

It seems that the more some claim to be “independent/objective” the more they just confirm their partisan allegiance.

Pity really. It could’ve been so much more…

Indeed, Ser Tee, I’m quickly reaching the conclusion that we plebs are becoming harbingers of the people we most despise on either side of politics … football barrackers for our “team” rather than messengers of reason for the millions in the stand … we need to be able to say … I like that policy and not that one … you did that well … that was a balls up … without having to defend the bleedin’ obvious to the 80% all the time …

  144. February 11, 2013 7:38 pm

    Strongly agree with that, TB.

The bipolar cultism displayed on aligned political blogs (& in the wider media) makes my skin crawl.

The whole notion of ‘My Party, right or wrong’…makes me gag.

I don’t really get why seemingly intelligent people so easily make subjugants of themselves.

I really hope AIMN succeeds, genuinely. It has some quality people writing there, and could fill a gap, and I think Miglo has put in a lot of effort.

I pointed out that specific comment on the site (at the time) as I think it was indicative of some of the exchanges. I doubt whether that’s the tone anticipated by the various authors who go to the trouble of writing some very thought provoking articles.

I might post my thoughts over there later.

Pity really. It could’ve been so much more…

    sreb,

no need to explain to me – I suspected – predicted the outcome – and watched it unfold – my first comment was “what’s new” (read between the lines) … and my scepticism was proven … and I don’t blame, Migs, for that at all … I just knew that the “followers” would be essentially the same … I was just over there, reading the last of the posts on Victoria’s thread (very well written BTW) … what it needed was someone to write a similar “open letter” to the PM, Julia Gillard … both all leaders in OUR Parliament need to be scrutinised the way Victoria ripped into the Leader of the Opposition … independent should mean – no bias – all points of view … pity

  148. February 11, 2013 7:40 pm

    Neither quote was mine, btw.

I just read them in comments somewhere & thought them relevant.

  149. February 11, 2013 7:44 pm

True Tom and TB, I’m particularly fond of John Lord’s writing, but when Victoria suggested that Tony Abbott deliberately planned his National Press Club address to coincide with the arrest of Craig Thomson, well, let’s just say, that that confirmed in my mind that she is a nutter.

But imagine the outrage from rent-a-crowd when I pointed that out… 🙄

If you can that’s great … no-one knows more than our own Blogmeaster how much effort must have gone into AIMN … the concept is great … just that instead of evolving as intended, it devolved into CW II …

I’ve only ever written a couple of thread headers …

I did notice that you two are not the only dissenters …

I always think I had an advantage growing up, my family always argued politics at the dinner table … my Dad was Labour later Labor and a union rep my Mum a stanch Liberal (“because my dad” (my grandad) “foeced me to vote Labour”) … my sister is a Catlick Liberal and I’m a Labor socialist (true sense of the word, Wally) … but I believe in the capitalist system just not the corrupt version that my sister and her (my ex) friends wallow in …

However, when I studied contract law I had a great lecturer who taught me to argue the OTHER person’s point of view FIRST and then develop my own … not much more complicated than debating … guess why I post her … 🙂

So after the now confirmed failure of their much redesigned Mining Tax how many Lefties will

    1) defend commitments of expenditure when the revenue is not guaranteed

    2) continue to support Swan when he is actually the weakest link in the government and we should thank the rest of the economy for having the strength to carry on despite his best efforts to fuck it.

The rusted ons will have to take it on the chin, joolya won’t be going into battle with the miners before the election. They will spin it gently.

‘Ultimately the super profits from mining companies will be subjected to tax, but for the first couple of years at least these will be shielded by inserting an ability to include deductions on the revalued assets in their iron ore and coal portfolios.’

… the latest learning monstrosity is called a, “noun group” … check out why each generation has more trouble than the last in simple communication …

(secondary nouns behave exactly like adjectives, apparently … so call it an adjective!!)

ie the beer glass … glass is the noun and beer is the secondary noun !!!!

Confused? It seems the teachers are, the kids are … and so are we …

    beer-glass
it`s one item, it`s a noun, and the system is idiotic

  182. February 13, 2013 6:04 pm

    Would it be unfulfilled…?

Another term I really fkn hate is the term used by market research people to describe parents who no longer have children at home – “empty nesters.”

    How fkn patronising is that…??!!

It’s like your sole purpose in life is to have offspring, and once they’ve upped and left, your purpose is fulfilled and now you’re “empty” or “lacking.”

    It shits me no end.

Me too, egg, but the fledglings, fledglings keep flying back! Luv it …

BTW, an ex (lo-o-o-o-ng story) old friend’s daughter and her lesbian partner have just had a liitle boy …

… the irony of that is that our “friends” now have three grandsons … she was the mother of two daughters and went to a great trouble to lecture The Minister and I that boys were such a problem to bring up … we had a pigeon pair … she now thinks boys are “wonderful” … shallow is, as shallow does …
