R.I.P. David Bowie

January 11, 2016

David Bowie has died, following an 18 month battle with cancer.

His death comes just two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his 25th and final studio album Blackstar.

Ominously, the latest single from his latest album is titled Lazarus.

Needless to say, I’m devastated.

I thought it must have been some kind of sick joke when I heard this on the radio just now. I knew reb would be upset. I am as well. My sister had Bowie on high rotation when we were in our early teens. I absorbed him by osmosis.

Sad news indeed reb, one of the all time greats. I wasn’t even aware he was sick.

A lot of old timers seem to passing away lately. Lemmy of Motörhead fame passed away just recently too. Not up there with the caliber of Ziggy, but he had his moments (imo)

That song/video is so damn poignant today. Obviously meant to be… Had no idea he was so ill. The man melted my brain with Space Oddity. What a loss, what a force in music and the arts. RIP…

    Now that’s a loss

    He’s a class act.

They said he fought cancer for 18 mths, I didn’t even know he had cancer.

I genuinely felt a little shocked when I read the headline, looked for it to be a fake, Bowie figured large in my adolescent years, lots of my memories rushing back, forever joined with his music.

    My favourite Bowie quote:

For you’re dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy …
…… but I love you in your fuck-me pumps
And your nimble dress that trails
Oh, dress yourself, my urchin one, for I hear them on the rails
Because of all we’ve seen, because of all we’ve said
    We are the dead

    Particularly “defecating ecstasy”.

I only just listened to that Lazarus song

“Look up here, I’m in heaven.”

That is so haunting, and so Bowie.

Oh my god, what is this song
    ………..
    right, I have no idea

David Bowie shares his birthday with Elvis Presley. Coincidentally (or not) Elvis also performed a song called Black Star….

Every man has a black star
A black star over his shoulder
And when a man sees his black star
He knows his time, his time has come

Black star don’t shine on me, black star
Black star keep behind me, black star

There’s a lot of livin’ I gotta do
Give me time to make a few dreams come true, black star
When I ride I feel that black star
That black star over my shoulder
So I ride in front of that black star
Never lookin’ around, never lookin’ around

Black star don’t shine on me, black star
Black star keep behind me, black star

There’s a lot of livin’ I gotta do
Give me time to make a few dreams come true, black star

One fine day I’ll see that black star
That black star over my shoulder
And when I see that old black star
I’ll know my time, my time has come

Black star don’t shine on me, black star
Black star keep behind me, black star

There’s a lot of livin’ I gotta do

Youngest daughter and I were in the garage performing some de-cluttering. There were about three boxes of old cassette tapes there that I’ve kept for the memories and the great music. I had said that we must be merciless in the clean-up, so we debated. Shall I keep them for the memories even though the old cassette player is in the garage and neither have seen the light of day for about 15yrs, or stick them on eBay or gumtree and see if a collector wants them or just throw them in the bin.

It was hard to part with them, but in the end, I said “oh, what’s the point in keeping them, david bowie’s dead”

She looked at me as only this particular feisty girl can!

    The day the music died.

David Bowie- Space Oddity Original Video (1969)

Posted by You Tube user ‘WHiRLED PEACE’:

“Behold… the Originale music video for the David Bowie song Space Oddity from Bowie’s promotional film, ‘Love You Till Tuesday’, originally released in 1969 and re-released on dvd. I’m very happy to share this rare, unique and odd version of the video and song. EnJoy this piece of space film gold and vintage anti-special effects.

“I should say, I found this video on the interwebs in 2006. By accident, i meant to download the album Space Oddity. Instead I found this, didn’t find any info about it anywhere, and posted it on the New video sharing website Youtube. I’m just so happy I found it because if not, who knows when this would have been uploaded. And it’s such a wierd, special and super rare video and recording. So glad I can share it with people! Super cool gang!”

I went to the funeral of a friend this morning … 66 … brain tumour … cool dude right to the end … but it took some 24 months of ops and medical care and when I did see him before he died he was as normal as you or me … great sense of humour … began life as a linitype operator and ended up as a graphics designer …

He also had time to plane his funeral!

As the curtains on his coffin (with laminated scenes of NZ … nicely done too) closed.

This song began to play … typical Ian …

    THE DAILY BLIB

    NOT A BEATLE EDITION

They were first unsettled when Bowie came out of retirement three years ago and released ‘The New Day’, which prompted McCartney to record his album ‘Yes’, as well as collaborating with Rihanna and Kanye West, which seemed a fittingly hip end for a rock icon.

”I thought that would be enough to make me stand out if I died tomorrow. Not even close.”

Similarly, Sir Elton John believed that his body of work to date plus the endless replays of ‘Candle in the Wind’ would be a suitable testament when he finally kicks the bucket.

While Bowie has out-done Paul and Elton on the `style` front, Elton and Paul are now concerned they will be out-done in the `Spectacular-Demise` category too. Rumours from Moonee Ponds were circulating that back-up singer `blib-stooten`, of a canberra based choir group known as `the-team`, is Suffering from terminal unpopularity, blib has planned for one of the most spectacular public demise`s the world has ever seen, sometime in mid to late 2016.

Thanks for that link Tom, I found the following quote from another link on that page..

“”Music has given me over 40 years of extraordinary experiences. I can’t say that life’s pains or more tragic episodes have been diminished because of it. But it’s allowed me so many moments of companionship when I’ve been lonely and a sublime means of communication when I wanted to touch people. It’s been both my doorway of perception and the house that I live in.””

It was good though, I’m probably just too pessimistic 😦

Go on say something, you'll feel better...
