Hotel Hell: Quarantined Aussies say they’re being “treated like asylum seekers!”

April 1, 2020

“A complete and utter dump”

DESPERATE AUSTRALIANS fleeing the peril of those floating petri dishes of hell like the Ruby Princess are now finding themselves thrust face-first into 14 days of mandatory quarantine at some of Australia’s finest 5 star hotels.

However, the picture is far from rosy, with many of these new-found “guests” reporting prison-like conditions, disgusting food, and staff who treat them “like criminals.”

“It’s a living hellhole,” said Felicity Purdue-Smythe, 62 of Mosman, NSW.

“We had just arrived back from our annual skiing trip in Aspen to suffer the indignity of being transported in ‘a bus’ to the Intercontinental Hotel at Circular Quay, only to find that our regular suite had been allocated to other travellers.”

“It’s a disgrace. I’ve never felt so humiliated in all my life, said Felicity”

breakfast

“The food is fucking awful” is a regular complaint

Her husband, retired General Sir Neville Codswallop, 86, agreed. “We had to wait an entire three minutes at check-in, and then a further 3 minutes and 37 seconds for the bellhop to deliver our luggage to the President’s Suite.”

“I had a bad feeling from the moment we arrived – and everything’s just gone from bad to worse. It’s been a fucking nightmare,” added Sir Neville.

“What’s more, the food is fucking awful!”

“For dinner, we were offered a choice of grain fed filet mignon with a blackberry and black truffle jus or wild alaskan salmon with beluga caviar and pomme frite. I only eat grass-fed Ayrshire beef from the Scottish Highlands so to be dished up this muck is a fucking insult..!”

“I’m not even going to discuss the Bordeaux!” spat Sir Neville.

bedroom

Guests complain the rooms are filthy and dishevelled

Self-funded retirees Joan and Lindsay Filthwhite of Condescension Manor, Toorak, agreed.

“From the moment we arrived it’s been an absolute nightmare. We’ve been stuck in this so-called five star Hilton hotel for two and half hours with limited access to the executive lounge, relaxation centre or rainforest spa. Room service is only available 24 hours and I’ve had to cancel my daily pedicure, manicure, chemical peel and colonic irrigation treatment.”

“We don’t have high expectations, but no one should have to endure this living hell.”

“We’re being treated like we’re asylum seekers but we haven’t done anything wrong. It’s just a horrible, horrible situation and I don’t know when it’s going to end,” sobbed Mrs Filthwhite.

If only they’d been au pairs things might’ve worked out differently.

People in the private sector have to stay home. My dentists office rang me and told me my appointment is cancelled. And she told me she had just lost her job until who knows?

Just ALP bribery giving govt workers more money by a political party who knows how to bribe people and to win votes from greedy people like no other political party in human history.

I really can’t see these severe restrictions remaining in place for much more than another month.
There will be more deaths from domestic violence and suicide than the coronavirus.

Victorian students will return to school on April 15th.

    Start of Term 2

School staff will return on Tuesday 14 April. This will be a pupil free day.

Students will return on Wednesday 15 April.

The Victorian Chief Health Officer will advise on whether the transition to flexible and remote learning and support should commence on the first student day of Term 2 closer to the time.

You should work with your staff to establish on-site staffing arrangements for the first few weeks of Term 2, in the event that we proceed with the transition to flexible and remote learning and support.

You should also make sure that you have student health and wellbeing support in place for this term. For example, a phone number that students can call if they are feeling anxious or want to talk to a staff member.

I’m not sure what the Queensland version of Moe is, but the entire country will look like Moe following the reform of the power industry if these restrictions continue for more than a month.

But Prof Ricciardi added that Italy’s death rate may also appear high because of how doctors record fatalities.

“The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus.

“On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 per cent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 per cent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity – many had two or three,” he says.

The controls put in place by the nine governments seem to be working but confusing people … ie states, territories, Federal all playing instruments but often out of tune for the punters … Tas, Vic, NSW seem to be tougher (for good reason) but people here think it also applies to Qld …

No worries TB. It’s good you are interested in statistics because you will understand what I’m about to stay.

You are correct that the dark blue trend line for cumulative cases is still going up. It won’t go down, either, because it only registers the running total of all confirmed cases. It makes no attempt to remove cases which have since recovered and are no longer classed as active.

The light blue bars, on the other hand, are new cases as they were reported daily and, as you can see, there is no trend line indicated for that. If there were it would rise, flatten out, then dip down towards (today’s date on) the right.

That’s quite stupid then, isn’t it.

Yes. Victoria, however, includes ‘recovered’ in its figures.

As of 2 April 2020, Victoria has 1,036 total confirmed cases, 30 people are in hospitals including six people in intensive care. five people have died. 60% of cases are directly linked to overseas travel, and 57 were locally acquired (in Victoria) with no know link to overseas travel or another confirmed case. In total, 422 people have recovered.

    https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19-daily-update

So Victoria has had 1,036 total confirmed cases. Of those five have died and 422 have recovered. Therefore the number of ‘active’ cases is 609 – as distinct from the 1036 shown in the national 5224 total.

    https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/coronavirus-covid-19-current-situation-and-case-numbers

The same could be done for all states, and that 5224 would be broken down into active, died, and recovered.

Using the Victorian percentage as an example, where around 41% have recovered, the national figures would be these:

    Total 5224, died 23, recovered 2142, active 3058.

The curve flattens as we get fewer new cases, but obviously it won’t go down.

To control the spread of a dangerous virus that as yet has taken 24 lives in this country, 25 million Australians have been placed under indefinite house arrest, children’s playgrounds are locked and patrolled by security guards, and the police fly drones over beaches and parks.

To control a virus that as yet has infected 5000 Australians, the response of doctors and politicians to this serious health crisis was to create also a humanitarian and an economic crisis. In the years to come Australians will quite rightly question whether there could have been a better way.

Future generations will ask why the public was so quick to accept the opinions of those experts who presented the worst-case scenarios rather than listen to other experts, no less qualified to offer a judgment, but who suggested less draconian solutions than those that came to be implemented.

ToSY, the other subject I found interesting was proxemics – very useful right now … four square metres …

We sometimes arrive early at the cinema and sit in the middle on the back row – its very intersting watching where people sit as they arrive – and guessing where the the next one’s in will sit … got to be a bout 99% right …

The ones that baffled us was the couple who sat right alongside us the whole movie … not another person in the place!

Or a colleague, who rode an almost full lift, face to face with a woman, as people got off neither moved (as people do in lifts) … until there was just the two of them … she suddenly started to giggle and said “You wouldn’t be studying proxemics would you” … as it was they both were … fun and laughter …

In the scheme of things Australians have an advantage in physical distancing compared to most countries who are used to less body space … seems to be working in our favour too …

That’s like writing: “Innocent residents from seaside resort where no one has drowned for over a decade are frogmarched to internment camps!” when there is a tidal wave fast approaching. It may be true that no one has drowned for over a decade but that is not the point. It is not a static situation. There are another 4 dead since you posted.

In the US the number of deaths just doubled in the last three days. According to their obviously scaremongering president and his team the US will lose at least 100,000 people and quite possibly many more. In fact if hard measures are not taken they may lose up to 2 million people. Now maybe that is a price you are prepared to pay.

Now maybe that is a price you are prepared to pay.

My case is we shouldn’t be basing our response on what is happening in countries just coming out of winter. The virus does not thrive well in warm, humid conditions. I say that’s why we have been spared the worst of it, not because of any draconian government policies. America and all those other countries are doing social distancing just as stringently as we are.

Of course I may be wrong. Absolutely. But so might the ‘national cabinet’. We might be wrecking the joint for a virus that – and we won’t know for sure till later – might be incapable in our case of doing anything like the damage some are predicting.

The biggest scare story has been that we might run out of intensive care unit (ICU) beds. If the only stats we are being given is total confirmed cases, people will fear the medical system won’t be able to treat them if they become infected. If the true statistics – how many people are infected at any one time – were given, much of the fear and anguish would be alleviated.

Donald Trump has fired the inspector general for the intelligence community who handled the whistleblower complaint that led to his impeachment, prompting fierce criticism from Democrats.

The US president chose a Friday night, with America consumed by the coronavirus pandemic, to tell the House of Representatives and Senate intelligence committees of his decision to dismiss Michael Atkinson.

In a letter, Trump claimed it was “vital” that he had confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general, and “that is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general”.

The president would nominate an individual who has his full confidence at a later date, he added.

The data on COVID-19 differs wildly from country to country. Look at the figures for Italy and Germany. At the time of writing, Italy has 69,176 recorded cases and 6,820 deaths, a rate of 9.9 percent. Germany has 32,986 cases and 157 deaths, a rate of 0.5 percent. Do we think that the strain of virus is so different in these nearby countries as to virtually represent different diseases? Or that the populations are so different in their susceptibility to the virus that the death rate can vary more than twentyfold? If not, we ought to suspect systematic error, that the COVID-19 data we are seeing from different countries is not directly comparable.

Look at other rates: Spain 7.1 percent, US 1.3 percent, Switzerland 1.3 percent, France 4.3 percent, South Korea 1.3 percent, Iran 7.8 percent. We may very well be comparing apples with oranges. Recording cases where there was a positive test for the virus is a very different thing to recording the virus as the main cause of death.

Jonathan Sumption, a former U.K. Supreme Court justice, has been among those to express concerns. He said the actions of Derbyshire police were “frankly disgraceful” and told the BBC that the U.K. was in danger of becoming like a “police state.” He said:

When human societies lose their freedom, it’s not usually because tyrants have taken it away. It’s usually because people willingly surrender their freedom in return for protection against some external threat. And the threat is usually a real threat but usually exaggerated. That’s what I fear we are seeing now. The pressure on politicians has come from the public. They want action. They don’t pause to ask whether the action will work. They don’t ask themselves whether the cost will be worth paying. . . The symptoms of coronavirus are clearly serious for those with other significant medical conditions, especially if they’re old. There are exceptional cases in which young people have been struck down, which have had a lot of publicity, but the numbers are pretty small. The Italian evidence, for instance, suggests that only in 12 per cent of deaths is it possible to say coronavirus was the main cause of death. So yes this is serious and yes it’s understandable that people cry out to the government. But the real question is: is this serious enough to warrant putting most of our population into house imprisonment, wrecking our economy for an indefinite period, destroying businesses that honest and hardworking people have taken years to build up, saddling future generations with debt, depression, stress, heart attacks, suicides and unbelievable distress inflicted on millions of people who are not especially vulnerable and will suffer only mild symptoms or none at all, like the Health Secretary and the Prime Minister.

Sadly, eight people have died. 73 cases in Victoria have been identified from an unknown source (an increase of 11 since yesterday). In total, 527 people have recovered.

That is 1,115 total cases minus eight dead and 527 recovered, so there are currently 580 people sick with the virus. On Friday that number was 609.

As for the more seasoned and cynical in the world, they might say wiping out the entire global economy – with all the future deaths and misery that will inevitably follow – is perhaps an overreaction to a virus that is bad and deadly but far from the worst or deadliest thing facing the world at the moment.

By way of example, the death rate of corona at the time of writing was over 50,000. By contrast, almost 10 million people die of cancer each year – 70 per cent in low- to middle-income countries – according to the World Health Organisation. Heart disease kills 18 million.

And the vast majority of coronavirus deaths are people already suffering from cancer or heart disease or some other medical condition. In many cases it is actually this condition that is the major contributing factor to their death, even though it is counted as a coronavirus fatality. And in Italy, the worst hit country, the average age of death is almost 80.

Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy says he is “increasingly confident” Australia will avoid the kind of devastation the coronavirus has caused in countries like Italy and the United States.

Declaring Australia was in a “good place”, Professor Murphy said the number of COVID-19 cases continued to rise but the rate of growth was slowing.

The death of a Ruby Princess passenger in Queensland, announced after Professor Murphy’s press conference, brought Australia’s death toll to 35. A total of 5,687 cases have been reported — an increase of 139 in 24 hours.

“That is probably the lowest rise we’ve had for a few days and it does tend to continue the trend we’ve seen of flattening of the curve,” Professor Murphy said

… Of the 5,687 people who have tested positive to the virus since January, more than 2,000 have already recovered …

Here ya go ToSY … Australian good “news” … with caveats of course …

The prevalence of Covid-19 in Australia could peak in mid-April and new cases reduce to almost zero by July, according to modelling by the University of Sydney.

But the story doesn’t end there: without widespread testing to detect asymptomatic cases of Covid-19, and a firm hold on social distancing measures that remain in place up to four weeks after the person with the last known infection has recovered, the curve will shoot back up.

“That’s pretty much the exit strategy,” said Professor Mikhail Prokopenko, a pandemic modelling expert and the director of the Centre for Complex Systems at Sydney University, who is leading the modelling team. “It must be based in testing.” ……

The outlook predicted by the Sydney University simulation is based on a 90% compliance with social distancing rules.

It assumes the incidence peak — the number of new cases reported daily — was hit in late March, and a prevalence peak — the number of cases active at once — in mid-April. Under this scenario the total number of cases in Australia will reach between 8,000 and 10,000. As of Monday, the actual numbers show 5,744 cases.

“The incidence peak is fairly clear,” he said. “It has fallen and if nothing outrageous happens again, like an outbreak or a new cruise ship disaster, it will continue going down.”

Sadly, once again we are reminded that Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe’s masterpiece, Gladiator, is the movie for this presidency and its tumultuous times. In one scene, a senator, Gracchus, attempts to confront Commodus, the emperor, about a plague spreading through Rome. The emperor declines, threatens the senator and muses about disbanding the Senate.

On Thursday, Trump forced the removal of Captain Brett Crozier from his command of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, for having the temerity to plead his sailors’ case as more than 100 of them tested positive for coronavirus.

If you can leave your soldiers to suffer then no American is truly safe, no matter what Jeanine Pirro may say. Crozier left the ship to the cheers of the crew – then reportedly tested positive himself.

Hours after dismissing Crozier, Trump sacked Michael Atkinson, the intelligence community’s inspector general, for simply doing his job. Trump’s Ukraine call was never perfect, however many times he says it was.

The High Court did itself and Australian justice a great service by finding for Pell. The legal point was simple enough – if the defence witnesses give unchallenged evidence which raises a reasonable doubt as to the defendant’s guilt then the jury must acquit. That is what ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ means.

Once a doubt is raised it is for the prosecution to prove that it is not a reasonable doubt. In this case multiple witnesses gave evidence that raised a reasonable doubt. The evidence was not challenged by the prosecution. Thus the prosecution did not come close to proving that there was no reasonable doubt.

If you care about the presumption of innocence there was no other decision than acquittal. This was clear enough to anyone who read Weinberg’s dissent in the Court of Appeal. This decision is a great victory for the presumption of innocence.

Of course anti-Catholic bigots everywhere will still believe Pell did it. I believe he didn’t but that is something reasonable people can disagree on. I am all for driving perverts out of the Church. I just don’t think Pell is one of them.

Also the two judges who upheld the conviction in the Court of Appeal were Catholics. Sadly there were also ignoramuses. A seven nil smackdown by the High Court is not a trivial thing.

The High Court justices didn’t say Pell is innocent (they don’t need to do that), but they did say there is a significant possibility he is. From the full judgement:

    119. Upon the assumption that the jury assessed A’s evidence as thoroughly credible and reliable, the issue for the Court of Appeal was whether the compounding improbabilities caused by the unchallenged evidence summarised in (i), (ii) and (iii) above nonetheless required the jury, acting rationally, to have entertained a doubt as to the applicant’s guilt. Plainly they did. Making full allowance for the advantages enjoyed by the jury, there is a significant possibility in relation to charges one to four that an innocent person has been convicted.

    127. The unchallenged evidence of the applicant’s invariable practice of greeting congregants after Sunday solemn Mass, and the unchallenged evidence of the requirement under Catholic church practice that the applicant always be accompanied when in the Cathedral, were inconsistent with acceptance of A’s evidence of the second incident. It was evidence which ought to have caused the jury, acting rationally, to entertain a doubt as to the applicant’s guilt of the offence charged in the second incident. In relation to charge five, again making full allowance for the jury’s advantage, there is a significant possibility that an innocent person has been convicted.

How a selection of elite judges can find the decision of a jury of a persons peers as being wrong simply amazes me. Why have juries at all then? Why not just a bunch of judges sit on every trial in the land. If the high court can overrule a jury then the jury system is totally obsolete. Our legal system is broken. A jury is selected from a random panel of citizens, with the defence able to scruitinise those selected for the jury, with a number of rejections given to both the defence and the prosecution until the actual jury is selected. To then have either side appeal to a court full of judges to then override the whole process is an abomination. The jury did NOT entertain a doubt as a jury must be unanimous in its decision. To have a few judges throw out a jury unanimous decision is simply wrong.

The decision of the High Court was a victory for justice. Those who would like to see Pell convicted so as to not discourage victims from coming forward are disgustingly vile pieces of shit. He should be convicted if the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that he committed the crime.

In this case the prosecution abjectly failed to do so. It was always impossible that they would be able to do so based on uncorroborated statements of the victim. And it would be disgraceful if our legal system permitted such convictions to stand.

The High Court has not made new law here. It has applied existing law. The relevant cases are cited in the judgment.

Finally, the High Court should be composed of the intellectual elite. The idea is that it should be populated by the best and the brightest members of the legal profession. This is usually the case. The rare exceptions are the relatively few examples of ALP cronyism such as the appointment of the execrable Lionel Murphy.

Splatter. A jury accepted unanimously that that the prosecution proved Beyond Reasonable Doubt. A jury. A selection of individual peers. That is Beyond Reasonable Doubt. Nothing Less. To then have a number of judges decide a full unanimous Jury was wrong, flies in the face of our judicial system as far as I am concerned. If he was found not guilty and then the judges found the jury were wrong I would have the same opinion. Overriding a unanimous jury by a group of elites places all of us at the whim of judges and not our peers. I have no objection to the selection of high court judges with the best skills. I have the massive objection of their ability to override a unanimous jury. Can you not see the difference or do you want to play political point scoring adding the ALP. I want Pell convicted because a JURY Unanimously found him guilty or does that fail to be comprehended.

You’re not the first to ask that. The Victorian Government is considering that very question.

The Andrews Government will consider introducing judge-only trials in Victoria in a move that some lawyers believe could enhance the right to a fairer court hearing.

New state Attorney-General Jill Hennessy has asked her department to examine the matter, which would bring Victoria into line with other Australian states.

My point is the appeals process provides checks and balances against convicting the innocent and if you were falsely convicted you’d be happy it was there.

Shane: “To then have a number of judges decide a full unanimous Jury was wrong, flies in the face of our judicial system as far as I am concerned. “

No! Supervision of juries is part of our judicial system. Appellate courts are reluctant to overturn jury decisions but will do so where the decision of the jury is unsafe because no rational jury could make that decision. This is all explained in the judgment.

If jury decisions were not subject to appellate review then there would be no avenue for a wrongly convicted defendant to have his conviction reviewed. This would be seriously unjust. In almost every successful appeal against a conviction for serious crimes a jury verdict is overturned. Apparently you want to terminate the right of a convicted person to appeal.

In this case no rational jury could come to the decision that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. This will inevitably be the case were there is no evidence whatsoever to corroborate the victims narrative and there is unchallenged evidence that the defendant was not able to have committed the offence as charged. It is right and proper that the HIgh Court exercised its power to overturn the conviction.

In our system it is likely that some guilty people will escape conviction. Blackstone, one of the most influential jurists in the Anglo legal tradition, famously said: “It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer.”

…. but “beyond reasonable doubt” is a bit stronger than “on the balance of probabilities” …

It’s possibly the difference between an HD and a C; bearing in mind that G-O-D only rates 90%, while YOUR law professor rates 100%; and The Great Dissenter, who once rubbed wigs’n’gowns with those a present court likes to cite as compelling precedent for their ultra-reasonable ratiocinations, probably only would award their Unanimouses a D for their sophisticated group effort: see mention of ‘each party’, then observe the (in)opportunities – any and all (im(possibly) (re(cast)(in)nominate ‘rhetorical flourishes’ aside – for applied pres(s)tidigitations to the scales and/or the (w)hole(s) of (the) evidence(s).)

(Or, to put it another way, Splatter, the HCA, as a party in its own right, may have rejected the defence’s persistent attempts to prove Pell ‘innocent’ by reason of ‘impossibility(ies)’, which infected initial trial and first appeal considerations, even as it was re-re-presented to the HCA, in favour of the accepted standard of (not) guilt(y) beyond reasonable doubt, and the HCA may have used the vehicle of effluxion of time and statutory caveats as applied to opportunity witnesses, and the ‘impossibility’ of their providing any further definitiving probative evidences, either way, other than their (un)prompted) equivocations at initial trial, to reinforce that accepted standard; in some ways, then, the defence strategy was a masterstroke in attempting to corrupt an initial trial, possibly for purpose of appeal, possibly because/in cause of client zealotry, although it did fail, repeatedly, and yet the prosecution had no clear answer to a more accepted/acceptable form of defence and/or standard; nevertheless, all Pell’s defence team was left with, in crushing victory, was acknowledgement of the ‘significant risk of an innocent person (be(ing) found guilty’, and (un)reasonable doubt about an (in)ability to crystallize that risk(-of-risk) at (re)trial; or something(s) like that.)

Retardland, if the prosecution presents only the uncorroborated (vague) word of the (alleged) victim it is difficult to see how it could ever succeed in proving something beyond reasonable doubt.

It is no surprise that the High Court found as it did. This is a particularly strong bench. My favourites are Gageler and Gordon but the rest are very capable as well.

The surprise was that two judges of the VCA prostituted themselves by trying to reverse the onus of proof in relation to alibi evidence. The 7-0 shellacking they received should at least be instructional to them. Weinberg’s dissent was compelling. After reading it there could be no doubt that Pell’s appeal would succeed, absent political factors

Hope you are really curious … not joshin’ .. but here goes.

I still do the odd gig … I still use midi files and I down load karaoke from Youtube and convert to mp4.

I won Queensland’s New Faces in 1969 and the Encouragement Award on Australia’s New Faces (Tom Jones was performing opposite the hotel I stayed in in Sydney) … I worked a nice RSL group every Friday night $70 for two 20 minute spots, promoted to Service Advisor at work – $70 a week, all really traveling well, Bernard King, asked me to his Workshop … by that time we had a little girl …

All came crashing down in 1970, I was called up – two years repairing armoured vehicles and playing soldier … $80 a fortnight – from $140 a week to $40 … both careers suffered pretty badly – couldn’t sing during NS against the rules – and I had to return to overalls …

    That’s life … and I’m having a good one … certainly not boring …

(I sent reb a track many years ago … )

Not joshin’ TB. Not about music anyways. Maybe reb can give us review of TB’s song?

    Doesn’t everyone?

I don’t attempt it. I like to go to pub Karaoke nights and just watch the proceedings – from those who rehearse and sing there hearts out to tuneless drunks.

Before the singing starts there are, among the more jovial drinkers, a few people sitting alone, looking a bit tense. They’ve obviously rehearsed and are a pretty good standard. They finish their chosen song, look relieved and usually get a pat on the back and a comment from their peers. I love listening to apparently shy people fully invested in their music getting up to sing their hearts out in public. I think it is a beautiful thing to watch. I love singers and songs. It is a rare night that I don’t hear some great singing, some emotional songs and some great songs that had fallen off my radar.

When I left my previous job I requested farewell drinks be a karaoke night. Luckily a few workmates had good voices.

I DJ reggae music on vinyl once a week at a small bar (when I’m not in corona virus lock down). I do it for beer and pizza. I’m not a great DJ but this is great recreation for me. If go to my turntables at home and try to play reggae for four hours straight – it ain’t going to happen.

sb, nice to hear someone appreciates the rehearsal time that goes into a performance …

I do cheat these days (I use karaoke – unless you stick to a few songs – I can’t remember all the words – still fascinates me that I can remember a melody though) I have 200+ songs in my kit allows me to “shape the show” I’m sure you know what I mean … but it also means planning and arranging and rehearsing … and I always try to a different show if I’m asked back … gets a bit hard after ten years with one client … 😀

The three best ingredients for fun … good food, good wine (or your pref) and good music – and of course good company …

I like the idea of you as a DJ I reckon reggae would be right up your alley too … you could always compere a Karaoke Show … ???

There are no retailers required to close, and people observe the government guidelines and legal restrictions. That’s why the graphs look good, not because bureaucrats find it easy to close public libraries and not bother to then figure out how to provide a service.

Ah, I see, so it’s only successful due to the things you like, not the entire range of actions taken. In fact, the graphs look good despite the retailers being open. Probably because no one is going. And many have closed, because it’s just not worth being open.

Sorry yomm, but it’s successful because …………….. of what has been done. You cannot pick and choose now. We can only try and gauge when to lift the measures. That’s the next test.

But that’s me… many elderly people read a lot. They don’t commonly have eReaders or even the internet.

*His father was co-founder of Toll with Paul Little and is a billionaire
*His brother has 10% of the company, worth hundreds of millions

and the one thing that concerns me is that, while kids may have a high tolerance to Covid-19 (apparently?) they can still carry the virus around neighborhoods … kids are not the most hygienic species on the planet – ask and parent … or teacher (who are also at risk) … kids will not “suffer” a few months off school … (something I experienced emigrating) …

One month! The cnut got off lightly. Australia as an island has a lot to lose from introduced diseases and has always had serious quarantine laws:

“The Quarantine Act 1908 (Cth) is administered jointly by the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture.

The federal government may declare by proclamation the existence of an epidemic or the danger of an epidemic caused by a quarantinable disease. During the period that the proclamation is in force the relevant Minister may “give such directions and take such action as he or she thinks necessary to control and eradicate the epidemic, or to remove the danger of the epidemic, by quarantine measures or measures incidental to quarantine.” Authorized persons may also exercise such powers in order to implement a coordinated response to a declared epidemic. Failure to comply with a direction given under these provisions is an offense punishable by up to ten years’ imprisonment.

I know right, people being jailed for repeatedly breaking the law

They’re orders, not laws. They’ve never been through Parliament. The mistake that guy made was pleading guilty.

Lawyers warn many of the fines issued on the basis of hastily written public health orders could fall over in court, saying they lacked clarity on key details and left police with too much discretion.

Barrister Stephen Lawrence … criticised the drafting of the offences created in the new public health orders, saying they differed from state to state and created significant loopholes.

“Things have been drafted in haste, it’s entirely understandable that there are errors,” he said. “But I think a lot of these fines, if people contest them, will ultimately be withdrawn or dismissed in court.”

Defence lawyer Paul McGirr agreed the laws were vague, inconsistent across state and territory jurisdictions, and left too much room for police discretion.

“I think if society got back to normal, a great deal of these would be dealt with either very leniently or dismissed because there are a number of technicalities,” he said.

Mr McGirr added: “These laws are thought of on the run, and specifics aren’t looked into, and once you leave discretion in the hands of police or others, it becomes very murky. Certainly cases could be defended if they chose to do that.”

I’m glad we have federalism. And local governments. The best way an individual can have some influence over decisions that affect their lives is to have them made as near to them as possible.

Most should be made by the individual without government interference. Then local government. Then state. Then as few as possible by the federal government – over which the average individual has virtually no influence.

These new arrangements will remain in place for the duration of Term 2 and will then be reviewed.

The treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, and MP Tim Wilson have rejected calls for social restrictions to be lifted for younger Australians. Frydenberg said that “we need to value every Australian life equally”. “We need to move away from this mindset of thinking that the coronavirus is an older person’s virus,” he said. “It’s a virus that affects all of us.” Wilson said he did not want to see lockdowns eased. “I think it’s easy to make comment from the sidelines … We also have to consider the full scale of what happens if we repeal them, if we get a second wave, then we’re forced back into the same situation again.”

As of 15 April 2020, Victoria has 1299 total confirmed cases, an increase of 8 since yesterday. 39 people are in hospital, including 18 people in intensive care. 14 people have died. 132 cases have an unknown source of infection, an increase of 10 since yesterday. 1137 people have recovered.

Personally, I’m glad that our governments are not jumping on the latest untested theory and are taking a conservative approach.

Sometimes you remind me of the crazies who thought that individuals should have the right to not wear seat belts or crash helmets. (I assume there are not many around now due to natural selection.)

Gavin Newsome has been a good administrator in this crisis and achieved a reasonably good outcome for California as compared with, say, New York.

He has published a fairly sensible guide to re-opening his state’s economy. Seems sensible to me. I would also look at what is happening in other places to see if we can improve our response including knowing the best time to relax some of the measures.

We are in the very envious position of being able to watch other countries, and how their timing and reactions pan out. That is who we should be taking note of, not economists who are lamenting the drop in their portfolio.

I heard that Singapore, the one we based our schools policy on for remaining open, even though their schools are prepared far more effectively than ours, has now closed theirs for a month, as a second wave of the virus has swept the country.

    https://www.sbs.com.au/news/singapore-moves-to-close-schools-workplaces-in-response-to-coronavirus-pandemic

It appears we are past the highest risk stage.

The current level of restrictions were due to the expert advice that-
    * the the public health system would be inundated with seriously ill people, and at risk of collapse,
    * we would run out of ventilators,
    * medical staff would have to pick and choose who was going to survive and who would not.

That’s why we moved to this very high level of restriction, or have you forgotten the rationale?

Now that we’re a long way from that point, it’s time to acknowledge that a different set of restrictions are appropriate. Restrictions that protect the welfare of those most vulnerable, but allow everyone else to start to rebuild their lives.

The sooner people can have a sense that they are over the worst (and we are) the better for everyone.

So let’s put all the effort into protecting those most vulnerable, and let others start to rebuild their lives.

    * or when a couple take a 3 hour walk along a coastal track?
    * or when 2 people ride their bikes 40 km?
    * or when someone has a takeaway coffee at a table near someone else eating their lunch in a park?

That didn’t stop media outlets from doing everything they could to destroy Brett Kavanaugh’s life and keep him from becoming a Supreme Court Justice. When Tara Reade accused her former employer Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her when he was a United States Senator, media outlets buried the news. The Washington Post and New York Times were forced to finally mention it on Easter Sunday, but CNN has enforced a strict block on even mentioning the allegation, much less giving it the kind of coverage Blasey Ford received for her claim.

Even for a generally corrupt media that is engaged in disinformation campaigns on a routine basis, the disparity in how CNN gave wall-to-wall coverage of Blasey Ford and has forbidden any coverage of Reade is shocking. …
