I actually don’t think I have a blind spot regarding unions.

I’ve been a full time official and have dealt with the unions in about 6 – 8 diverse public and private industries. Without boasting, I diubt whether there are many with the diversity of experience. So I think I’m entirely qualified to make the observations.

But I’m not posting my resume.

In the past I’ve specifically said unions in health and education should receive more support.

But… the good work of some is polluted by the grubbiness of other prominent unions, particularly in the construction sector.

My point is that you need unions to enforce strong legislation.

Unions are the police of the employment industry. Workers are mostly too frightened to complain due to losing their job if they do.

The 40 year trend of union membership has been at the same time individual payments and non standard wages, along with casualisation and extreme privacy of employees wages plus continual attack on unions power and ability. I have worked for 40 years ToM and been in unions and a union delegate and have seen the effects and the gradual destruction of the unions, while management pressured every one to resign, especially anyone other than the bottom rung of employees.

The start of the union run down was when many employers stopped deducting union membership fees from pay packets and banned union delegates from meeting workers on site. Then the blame unions for everything started and has increased to a crescendo of hysteria for management to achieve their aims. When there is no unions left and something happens just who will the right blame then? Strikes are almost unheard of yet there is still hysteria if any union calls for a strike as though the world will come to Armageddon.

An employer can pay its staff to break any union action, but a union is no longer permitted to gift its members any money while they are on strike to support family or bills. Howard made sure of that.

I witnessed the pressure from the top, the legislation against unions since Fraser, the intimidation, the insinuation that any action would result in you being managed out of your job as a result of other purposes. While it may be illegal to sack a worker because they are in a union, only an idiot would not realise that many members are massaged out of their employment under the guise of many other reasons.

Unions are political beasts just like all associations are like the NFF they all charge for membership and they all lobby government. The CBA, CEO while I was there actually tried to coerce staff into voting for the LNP on our internal TV Broadcast, it was a disgrace !!!

Whereas in most other countries, there is far less politicization of disputes, and industrial relations.

Industrial relations is highly politicised in Australia.

There is no reason that the media is more partisan than in the US, or workers more militant, or businesses more aggressive.

I put it down to unions forming half of a political party essentially a controlling interest. That provides a clear political focus on IR.
