Flying while also sending a bus, what a wonderful example of austerity from the party that demands less for the poor and more for the rich. Blood sucking leeches and thieves. The hypocrisy is astounding.

The LNP had better be paying for this propaganda election campaign and not the tax payer under the guise of policy information.

Utterly hilarious, the party and the energy minister, that demands privatisation of everything to their mates, so they can buy shares and staunchly claim that the market forces drive competition, have asked the energy retailers to reduce their charges, out of cycle and before an election.

Honestly the corruption is disgusting. No doubt they would have said to them, you can fuck the customers again after we are re elected.

Once again the privatisation ideology and fanaticism of selling off everything we own, turns around and screws the citizens within an inch of their pay packet while the arsehole CEOs get richer and richer with more and more dividends.

Amazingly the daily availability charge on electricity bills is becoming more and more of the total cost as the retailers massage the bill by increasing the availability while not increasing the KW charge. Thereby claiming that the price of electricity has stagnated. They are doing a bank smoke and mirrors where a fee is introduced while the rate stays the same.

    All blood sucking leeches.

Honestly the most dictatorial, partisan and hate filled POTUS ever who has derided the democrats and anyone else he chooses, is now calling on the two parties to come together in bipartisanship.

The Republicans were so hate filled against Obama for 8 years that I hope the Democrats give him the middle finger salute and put the boot in as far as they can.

What amazes me is that the LNP claim the 2 best PMs that have kept out of politics has been John Howard and Julia Gillard. For fucks sake John Howard has been just as active on the political since he was booted, giving lectures about politics, supporting candidates, giving opinions and out campaigning. Julia Gillard has kept quiet. There is absolutely no comparison.

Funny how Abbott has shut his flapping arsehole since the shock of Wentworth and the instillation of a religious nutter to the MP. Maybe he is shitting himself for his own seat as well. Wentworth shows that most voters support action on climate change, action on private schools being able to discriminate, action on renewables, action on the murray darling, action on aged care, action on refugees. All things that Abbott hates.

I have told you a million times privatisation has nothing to do with rising electricity prices. It is the push for renewables causing the problem. SA got rid of coal generated electricity and then found the govt had to spend $100M on diesel generators as a backup then build a new gas fired power station costing who knows what.

Also I read on another blog the so called gold plating of the network which has been blamed on the rising costs was done because renewable energy needs more maintenance and more substations etc

So another Labor pollie is booted from Parliament from a leaked accusation that is contested by the participants.

And who ultimately gains from this grubby tactic?

Also, quite sickening watching the entire media and twitter armies taking one side, when there are two alternate versions, from which a multitude of scenarios could be the actual truth

One thing is clear. Two lives are ruined because of the leaking by one man/party

I agree politics is filthy but I would state that an MP should resign form any party if allegations are made. They can then be investigated and can sue for defamation. Having said that, these allegations made under parliamentary privilege without the consent of the victim is disgraceful and the MP should be sacked immediately.

    https://www.abc.net.au/7.30/power-bills-up-appliances-burning-out-you-may-have/10481024

” LIZ HOBDAY: Pensioner Paul Ryan installed solar panels more than a year ago but for much of the time the voltage on the grid near Paul Ryan’s house runs too high, and that forces his solar system to shut down to protect itself. That’s a common problem with home solar. ”

@this is a little bit fakenewsy or timid reporting, probably to not draw fire from corporate teabags. As you know l will be going offgrid, along with others, once price is right. Corporate suppliers will be intentionally running the grid at highest possible, to prevent as much private feed-in as possible, as my sparkie mate told me ages ago. This is why we want the double/multi battery system. (along with the obvious avoiding having to deal with continual goal-post moving by corporate suppliers)

Where yo see a conspiracy, I just see incompetence, there is probably a low level clerk in charge of filling out forms and ticking boxes on right of entry.

Clerk – “and what is the permit number for Ms McManus?”
Union – “I don’t think she has one”
Clerk – “I don’t think we will be able to grant her entry”
    Union – ***expletive***
Clerk – “I’ll have to check and get back to you”

I dunno about the rest of you, but I don’t think YomM is rightwing at all. Read his long historical record of not siding with incompetent arsehats like Trump etc.

He sure has an axe to grind against specific branches/elements of the Union movement; a bit like a disgruntled former Union Official, if I had to guess. But, if you give specific examples, you will receive mostly specific answers.

For instance, I know his axe isn’t ground against my particular division of the CFMMEU. Recent replies to my comments, in fact, suggest that he thinks we should be ‘less benign’ with our P.I.A.
I trust his judgement, because, over the last decade+ he’s demonstrated insight; not just ideological repulsion (for the most part).

I would characterise YomM as economically conservative/libertarian (maybe), but generally socially progressive.

Same as I always thought that ToSY was much more Libertarian (almost classically) than RightWing.

I don’t think either of these blokes would fistpumpingly endorse Trumpism (in its purest, obnoxious, ignorant forms) because they are both smart enough to recognise dangerous, vulgar populism.

Shane, I still struggle to understand the point you are making.

A week ago you posted a link to a group of cafe workers that wanted stronger legislation about payment of wages and entitlements

And you might recall that is exactly what I was suggesting – whereas you and TB were saying unions are required

The other article was by Josh Borenstein – the well known labor lawyer – he made a series of assertions that I’m not going to bother to deal with – unless you want to specifically argue points – this is a reason that I don’t go for the “debate it with the link” style of blogging

He laments the decline in union density, and the effect of this on collective bargaining, but neglects to acknowledge that this has been a steady trend for over 40 years, not simply due to regulation.

If there are any particular point you want to raise – fine, but I’m not debating with a link.

But, imo, that stems from his visceral HATRED of anything UNION (and, it appears, Public Servant also)

And that very hatred clouds much of what would otherwise be quite a keen insight.

Case in point, he fails/refuses to see Shanes point that THIS government is one of the main reasons wages are stagnating, and work sites are becoming more dangerous. He sees it all within the prism of Unions and public servants, and all locked within some historically distant point in time

My point is that you need unions to enforce strong legislation.

Unions are the police of the employment industry. Workers are mostly too frightened to complain due to losing their job if they do.

The 40 year trend of union membership has been at the same time individual payments and non standard wages, along with casualisation and extreme privacy of employees wages plus continual attack on unions power and ability. I have worked for 40 years ToM and been in unions and a union delegate and have seen the effects and the gradual destruction of the unions, while management pressured every one to resign, especially anyone other than the bottom rung of employees.

The start of the union run down was when many employers stopped deducting union membership fees from pay packets and banned union delegates from meeting workers on site. Then the blame unions for everything started and has increased to a crescendo of hysteria for management to achieve their aims. When there is no unions left and something happens just who will the right blame then? Strikes are almost unheard of yet there is still hysteria if any union calls for a strike as though the world will come to Armageddon.

An employer can pay its staff to break any union action, but a union is no longer permitted to gift its members any money while they are on strike to support family or bills. Howard made sure of that.

I witnessed the pressure from the top, the legislation against unions since Fraser, the intimidation, the insinuation that any action would result in you being managed out of your job as a result of other purposes. While it may be illegal to sack a worker because they are in a union, only an idiot would not realise that many members are massaged out of their employment under the guise of many other reasons.

Unions are political beasts just like all associations are like the NFF they all charge for membership and they all lobby government. The CBA, CEO while I was there actually tried to coerce staff into voting for the LNP on our internal TV Broadcast, it was a disgrace !!!

Is it against the law for a union to print a how to vote card?

    Shane,

    1. Unions just won’t have the resources to inspect the time and wages records of a retail store or a restaurant/cafe.

That simply isn’t realistic and I am at a loss why you consider unions with 10% of private sector membership a preferable option to properly resourced regulation.

If the ALP/Greens win the next election, do you really think they will leave this policing up to unions, or do you think they are likely to put more resources into workplace inspection?

    2. Unions can’t rely on employers to do their recruiting, even unions acknowledge that.

    3. Unions have a strike fund as I recall and ask members to kick in to support strikes. My recollection is that employers cannot make payment to employees during industrial action, but union members are entitled to kick into a fund.

    4. I don’t mind any organisation donating, supporting or advocating if they feel so inclined. So the point you seem to miss is that the unions form part of the ALP, and that is now a relationship that is past it’s use by date. Many people in unions and the ALP acknowledge this, but others support it – because they enjoy the political intrigue, poser and career opportunities.

I think the dual political/industrial objectives prevents unions from maintaining their undivided attention on membership interests.

‘Cause they aren’t resourced and they don’t have to worry about union oversight.

Agree … unions need to ramp up their PR – ’cause its been trampled by LNP governments and management supporters – with far mor resources …

    Unions have a strike fund

Laughable — unions have legislative difficulty calling a strike even after a secret ballot …

unions form part of the ALP

Check your history as to why … and who supports LNP? The original crowd land owners, property developers, big industry, resource giants … the ALP was formed to get a better deal originally for shearers and then for all workers … now those rights and conditions are being eroded by the LNP mob …

I think the dual political/industrial objectives prevents unions from maintaining their undivided attention on membership interests.

Looking at the current IR pendulum I think the unions need to ramp up their support for the ALP and influence change just like big business unions/associations/clubs do with LNP …

You seem to deliberately miss the point, Shane said unions can’t have strike pay, my point is that unions can and do raise money to support striking workers, but they can’t have their employer pay them.

Do you think this should or should not be the case?

Check your history as to why … and who supports LNP?

Again, you seem to deliberately miss the point – I don’t have a problem with any individual, business, or organisation participating in the political process. Unions in the USA generally provide strong support to the Democrats. That’s fine.

To restate my opinion – direct affiliation conflicts the unions, and specifically makes them even more a political target.

  112. November 15, 2018 8:36 pm

If you need further proof of why we need strong unions in this country, look no further than the recent debacle at the Royal Hobart Hospital site. More than 100 Chinese plasterers went nine weeks without pay and were collectively owed more $1 million. Worse still, the Muppets favourite apologists, the Master Builders Association, were paid to provide the workers with a safety induction. This was done in English despite most of the plasterers not being able to speak the language. Fortunately the CFMEU Vic-Tas intervened and the workers were eventually paid what they were owed. And despite the ABCC being on site most days, they took no action whatsoever to address the safety and underpayment issues. As I have said before, if someone is legally allowed to work in this country they should be afforded basic rights and protection from greedy bosses. Thank goodness the CFMEU Vic-Tas were there to protect these vulnerable workers.

Associate Professor Matthew Hole from the Australian National University told ABC News about the achievement and its significance.

“The benefit is simple in that it is a very large-scale base load continuous energy production, with zero greenhouse gas emissions and no long-life radioactive waste,” he explained.

The research team responsible for EAST say it achieved this milestone through the use of various new techniques in heating and controlling the plasma, but were only able to maintain the record temperature for about 10 seconds.

Typical lies and deceit from TB. There was a nasty worldwide recession when Howard was Treasurer. The economic numbers in the USA were identical. The USA also had double digit inflation, unemployment and interest rates

Fraser/Howard handed Hawke, govt debt at 7% of GDP. Hawke/keating increased that to 18% of GDP and we lost our AAA credit rating under Hawke.

Talking about unemployment there were only a few months of double digit unemployment when Howard was Treasurer. During Keatings recession we had to have we had more than 2 years of double digit unemployment. Nothing like it since the Great Depression

The carcass of the 9.5m (31ft) mammal was found in waters near Kapota Island in the Wakatobi National Park late on Monday.

The agency at the centre of a controversial decentralisation scheme spearheaded by former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce has convinced just eight of 170 staff to move from Canberra to Armidale.

(A staff survey in February found up to 80 staff are expected to leave the agency rather than move to Armidale)

Australia’s chemical regulator, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), said a further 14 staff are “considering” a move, two years after it was formally announced by the Coalition Government.

“The risk associated with loss of staff are patently obvious,” the agency’s chief executive officer Chris Parker told a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

“The relocation to Armidale has disrupted our operations and the departure of staff has impacted our productivity and brought many underlying historical faults to the surface.

“The relocation is a challenge and there are risks we continue to manage.”

Who were constantly trained BEFORE privatisation to put the interests of customers first. This then became put the interests of shareholders first. Bonuses based on profit and sales became the norm, for all segments of the bank, this created a greed and smoke and mirrors culture. Staff massaged out of the bank for not having the right culture in the newly privatised CBA.

It would be for me too, TomR.

I am only going because it’s on Dad’s bucket list & he married a woman who was a farmer’s wife, then Nurse, then (@40) got into & through Medicine & became a GP…and here’s the catch…she can’t go, so I got the request. Would be supremely stupid to turn it down methinks.

My daughter has an interview for Medicine at Adelaide Uni on Monday. If she gets in (if she doesn’t get into Medicine, she’ll be at Adelaide Uni doing similar she’s already accepted…so, GONE…I will miss her), I’ll be moving her, then a few days later, leaving the country to Antarctica. Spare a thought for her Mum; we’ve not had an empty nest since 2000ish & I’ll be absent too. I almost feel guilty for going!

“Make sure you wear clean undies, toylet, in case you sink!”

My Sea-legs are pretty good TB.

I see it as a privileged opportunity to visit a part of the world, in rather intimate circumstances, that most of humanity will never see, let alone (little lone…I will never forget the rubbish of that self important flog) set foot upon. The Zodiacs go ashore two to three times a day; should be amazing.

The videos I’ve watched of B I G ships crossing that piece of water are illuminating. I could be riding every wave.

I probably shouldn’t say so, YomM, but we are in dispute (again).

I wish I could say more.

    Many threads converging.

Maybe, go and google the behaviour of certain global, US based paper companies since Trump’s tax largesse for Big Business. It’s been extortionate, similar & psychologically reticent across the globe since Jan 2018.

This; ” DUMP TRUMP NOW! ” ; is very echo chamber teebz, but you`re entitled to be warm and cozy inside your chamber enjoying the reverberations that please you. (even if theRonald has successfully rustled the various herds of imbecile that make up ‘da-base’ and successfully hijacked team repug with highly likely return as prez at next fedVote)

since Trump’s tax largesse for Big Business.

One of the points the union here is making is that the company got huge tax cuts and won’t share the benefit with their workers.

As I said it’s interesting to observe an orderly and articulate union

It’s a hard feeling to overcome, but I’m sure she’d be upset if your feelings of guilt put a damper on your enjoyment.

It’s therefore imperative that you enjoy yourself for her “Piece Of Mind”

And best of luck to your daughter. A big change for all. But, who knows, she may even return to the area a fully qualified nurse.

We understand this feeling only too well in this household … The Minister is feeling “lost” as our youngest g/son becomes a senior in high school … he the last of five … and of course two kids one married at 19 the other in the ADF at 17 … then the g/kids started popping out … very glad I retired in 2005 and could share in their upbringing … we rarely see them these days everyone is “busy” …

Industrial relations is highly politicised in Australia.

There is no reason that the media is more partisan than in the US, or workers more militant, or businesses more aggressive.

I put it down to unions forming half of a political party essentially a controlling interest. That provides a clear political focus on IR.

    I wonder why?

“Kelly O’Dwyer to run roughshod over the rights of working people”

There is no reason that the media is more partisan than in the US

We have one of the least diferse media landscapes in the world, dominated by murdoch

Channel 7 and 9 are now owned by liberal associated entities

I put it down to unions forming half of a political party

Whilst continuing to ignore the above

    Really?

The Liberals and ALP will always attack each other. That’s what political parties do, that means that the Lberals will attack the unions that make up the ALP, and the politicised unions will attack the Liberals.

That’s politics , but it need not be like that.

  229. Tom R permalink

that means that the Lberals will attack the unions

But she’s not “attacking” a union.

She is attacking a worker who is being supported by a Union.

    Or, is all fair………….

And I put it down to Australians being more pragmatic than the USofA Dream (actually a nightmare myth) that everyone can be a millionaire …

This obsession with splitting unions from the Labor Party is just LNP propaganda and nothing new its being going on for centuries … literally!

Who do you think formed the Liberal Party … nurses and motor mechanics? Or business owners and farmers? Private school graduates, or primary school drop outs? … officers and gentlemen, or Diggers and sergeants …?

Who do you think funds the LNP? Now that the multi-millionaire is counting his money in the Cayman’s … and even the business world is turning on the LNP … except Mining & Resources, I see …

    Naive?

I’d be happy if she never left TB, but that would be me being selfish.

She’ll make the world better with more experience. She is a good, intelligent person: I am proud. We need more of them out there.

She’s been reading some of the stuff here since she got old enough to have a social conscience. If you asked her, she’d be familiar with most regulars.
I told her, these are the sometimes divergent opinions of some clearly informed, balanced & articulate people…and to pay as much attention (maybe even more) to those you don’t agree with as to those whom you do.

    Free thinker.

l agree teebz. The jonestown greenz under rhiannon set themselves up as a crimson politburo; superior to other states greenz; and then went about shitting in their own latte belt. Then there has been the staying quiet on about half a dozen sex grubs in jonestown which is utterly stupid considering the greenz are chick heavy team. Unfortunately the greenz jonestown disease has spread to boltsville with a bunch of chicks outing more sex grubs there. l`m starting to think da greenz won`t be making any gains for a while. Hiding sex grubs while publicly pretending they`re a chick friendly team won`t play well across the latte belts.
