Scott Morrison call to Police Chief another example of Peak Smuggery

November 28, 2019
Capture

Angus Taylor enjoys Question Time in Parliament

Scott Morrison never expected to become Prime Minister but he’s quickly settled into the role as if it’s his god-given right.

In the midst of an AFP investigation into one of his own ministers, someone with a bit of skin in the game would keep a safe distance from the controversy and offer some excuse along the lines of “allowing the law to take its course,” “inappropriate to make any comment while investigations are still underway.” That sort of thing.

Heck, back in the day, a minister facing such allegations would step aside while the investigations proceeded until a final conclusion, but not so in the Morrison government.

No, Scott Morrison simply picks up the phone for a neighbourly chat with the New South Wales Police Commissioner Mick Fuller ostensibly to uncover where there’s any truth to the allegations.

The fact that this didn’t even occur to Morrison as improper is just further evidence of his ineptitude in the top job.

Even his former mate (remember his loyalty: “I’m ambitious for him”) Malcom Turnbull took to the airwaves to state that “he wouldn’t have made that call.”

Morrison, by his sheer ignorance and stupidity has compromised the position of the NSW Police Commissioner and pinned himself to the mast of that other moron Angus Taylor.

I guess this is what happens when he’s clinging on to government with the slimmest of majorities but it’s the rest of us who suffer.

We deserve better than this shambolic shit pile of a so-called “government.”

Are we running a sweeps on who’s taking the fall?

That’s assuming the pigs find anything, which seems unlikely

Commissioner Fuller said he hoped to have the investigation wrapped up next week.

“To be honest with you, I actually don’t feel as though the allegations themselves are serious, in terms of the things that I would normally stand up and talk about the types of crimes,” he said.

[David] Ipp, who served on the NSW court of appeal and as an Independent Commission Against Corruption commissioner, said the call was clearly not appropriate.

He said it appears to have been made to aid Morrison’s party-political decision-making, rather than the interest of the state.

“An ordinary citizen would not be able to get that information from the police … so what is it about the prime minister that entitles him to that information?” Ipp told Guardian Australia.

“You can’t see that it’s information that relates to matters of state interest. It can only relate to matters of party interest. If it relates to matters of party interest then he’s using his influence as prime minister to try to obtain the information so that he can make the politically correct decision – that is, whether to keep Taylor or to fire him.

    “I don’t think that’s appropriate. It’s not appropriate.”

“How do you know that,” interjects Tim Wilson from the government backbench.

Oh I don’t know? Perhaps because it is in the public domain?

    😆 😆 😆

  18. November 28, 2019 3:14 pm

This is getting more interestinger by the minute….

Taylor’s reliance on the altered document, made by an unknown person, raises possible offences under section 253 and section 254 of the NSW Crimes Act.

These make it an offence for a person to make a false document with the intention of using it to inducing a person ( in this case the journalist from the Daily Telegraph) to influence a person in public office in the exercise of their duties.

Inducing a person to accept the document as genuine is also an offence.

Labor has also suggested there may be an offence under section 316 if Taylor or his office covered up the use of a false document.

David Shoebridge refers NSW police commissioner to integrity commission
Our colleague Naaman Zhou has just spoken to David Shoebridge, who says he has referred Mick Fuller to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission over the phone call with Scott Morrison regarding the Angus Taylor investigation.

Shoeman is referring Fuller under s10 of the LECC act for serious misconduct

    From Tom R’s link…

“Commissioner Fuller either knew, or reasonably ought to have known, that Prime Minister Morrison and Minister Taylor were close political colleagues. Given this, it was highly inappropriate for Commissioner Fuller to be disclosing any details of the police investigation into Mr Taylor to Prime Minister Morrison.”

Shoebridge also claimed there was a conflict of interest between Fuller and Morrison because of the “personal relationship” the pair have previously spoken of, and being neighbours (or bin-gate) which they now claim was a joke.

    “It’s not appropriate.”

I wish lawyer-types would use Plain English; it probably alludes to an improper purpose underlying a decision-maker’s exercise (and/or decision-makers’ exercises) of (otherwise) lawful powers, or abuse(s) of (position)al) power(s), or something(s) else best known to the arcana of administrative(-cum-criminal) law; or, more fundamentally, simply the administration of justice (sans political(ly-motivated) interference); but how’s the average Jo(e) Q. Citizen to know, and why should s/he even care, if a lawyer-type is going to mystify plain meaning and an Everyperson’s understanding with a convoluted, “it’s not appropriate”?

Even worse, though, I suppose, would be that lawyer-type’s bizarrely spotlighting substantively a (deliberate) blindspot in the formal extant (and/or proposed) body of the law, such that Jo(e) Q. Citizen is impelled to (merely (not)) look at (and not (expect) act(ion) on) the ‘inappropriate’ behaviour(s) anywhere but ‘over there’,)

    GOOD

The Morrison government’s “robo-debt” bill could run to hundreds of millions of dollars, as it faces calls to provide welfare recipients with more information about how it will review old debt recovery decisions which relied on invalid methods.

On Wednesday, in a landmark court case, the federal government admitted a key element of the beleaguered robo-debt system is unlawful. The admission follows last week’s news that the Morrison government would no longer rely solely on averaged income data from the tax office to raise debts, and would review hundreds of thousands of robo-debt cases.

World’s second largest economy and largest emitter of carbon dioxide takes moral high ground wags finger and demands money from other developed countries.

CHINA on Wednesday accused developed countries, including the US, of doing too little to curb global warming, ahead of a UN summit discussing controversial issues including climate compensation.

China is the world’s second-largest economy and the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, but has repeatedly argued that developed nations should lead on tackling international climate obligations.

Mr Zhao called for developed countries to honour financial commitments including providing US$100 billion to poorer states harmed by climate change.

The US$100 billion – which China has said it is entitled to part of – was a non-binding accompaniment to the Paris Agreement, and was the annual amount that rich countries pledged to muster by 2020.

Beijing said on Wednesday it had reduced carbon emissions intensity by 45 per cent between 2005 and 2018. But China’s absolute carbon emissions have continued to rise, according to Tuesday’s UN report.

A separate study earlier this month warned that Beijing’s planned coal powerplants were equivalent to all of the EU’s current generating capacity.

    House prices surge (apparently)

I’m comfortable to have steady prices, even though that’s often regarded as an indicator of a slow economy.

But I’m also fine with an economy that is only growing slowly. That’s a sign of changing community sentiments about consumption.

It is reasonable to suggest that concern about emissions and climate will have an effect on consumption. There seems to be a more frugal mindset these days, and that’s a good thing.

Yes, it’s difficult to think of consumer products that don’t contribute to emissions, and most people give (at least) some consideration to the environment in their spending behaviour

So low growth is likely to be a permanent feature of the economy.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Sunday that the world’s efforts to stop climate change have been “utterly inadequate” so far and there is a danger global warming could pass the “point of no return.” … He noted that the world has the scientific knowledge and the technical means to limit global warming, but “what is lacking is political will.”

“The point of no return is no longer over the horizon,” Guterres told reporters in the Spanish capital. “It is in sight and hurtling toward us.”

Fine. Let’s plan for that then. I’m pretty sure with our proven levels of ingenuity we humans can adapt to a few degrees of warming. (Who knows, it might even be beneficial in some regions.) Then we can stop scaring children and start planning for the new normal.

If we do something … it might get better …

It’s like any human serious disease … leave it alone and it will spread … take steps to manage it and it might improve …

Saint Greta blesses us with the truth about ‘climate crisis’.

On the next two Fridays, we will again take to the streets … That action must be powerful and wide-ranging. After all, the climate crisis is not just about the environment. It is a crisis of human rights, of justice, and of political will. Colonial, racist, and patriarchal systems of oppression have created and fueled it. We need to dismantle them all. Our political leaders can no longer shirk their responsibilities … Collective action works; we have proved that. But to change everything, we need everyone.

According to Tudge it was Labor who introduced data matching between Centrelink and the ATO. And it looks like Robodebt started in 2011 when Labor replaced humans with computers to do the data matching to save money

    https://www.openaustralia.org.au/debates/?id=2017-02-08.82.2

This data-matching between Centrelink information and Australian Taxation Office information actually originated back in 1990, when Graham Richardson introduced what is called the Data-matching Program (Assistance and Tax) Act. That is when the process started. Since that time, essentially the same methodology has been used, where that information is compared and, where there is a discrepancy, a request is made of the recipient to explain that discrepancy. If they can, that is the end of the story. If they cannot, a debt may be raised against that person.
In 2011 it was actually the Labor Party, again, who introduced some sort of automation into the system. Indeed, the now Leader of the Opposition and the Deputy Leader of the Opposition were the two people in charge of introducing some form of automation into the system. Then in the 2015-16 budget we decided that we would expand the system to cover more people, and consequently my department has been implementing that system since. But I stress that the methodology which is being used to compare the Centrelink information with the Australian Taxation Office information is essentially the same that has always been the case.
