Fine Young Cannibals were a massive band in the 80’s but vanished after just a couple of albums. Lead singer Roland Gift went on to pursue a solo career but never rekindled the international fame of FYC.
One of their lesser known tracks was “I’n not the Man I used to Be.” From a band that once played stadiums, here’s a very amateur audience recording of Roland Gift performing it live at a very small jazz club in London in 2015.
It’s a fantastic version, not just because the very nature of a single hand held camera is raw in its unfinished authenticity, but also because he could well be reflecting upon his own past, which in turn causes us to reflect upon our own, just as we have changed through the years.

Roxy Music were massive in the 80s and the lead singer Bryan went on to pursue his own career with a couple of successful solo albums.
He’s still touring, but one song I really enjoy is his melancholic version of “More than this” which is quite a change from the 80s pop hit it once was…

Mental As Anything are an Australian new wave/pop rock band that formed in Sydney in 1976. Its most popular line-up (which lasted from 1977 to 1999) was Martin Plaza (birth name Martin Murphy) on vocals and guitar; Reg Mombassa (birth name Christopher O’Doherty) on lead guitar and vocals; his brother Peter “Yoga Dog” O’Doherty on bass guitar and vocals; Wayne de Lisle (birth name David Twohill) on drums; and Andrew “Greedy” Smith on vocals, keyboards and harmonica

Loved the Roland Gift. Frankie certainly grabbed me. I’ll start with Leon Ware’s Why I Came To California. I love this song for its rhythmic touches and its smooth jazzy style. It is cool, upbeat and just makes me happy every time I hear it:

As a little HeadBanger back in the 80’s, many of my mates were a little confused over some of my musical choices. But they were great live. And they did a have a big hit back then. This wasn’t it.
This band were also looking like going on to bigger things, but then … they just disappeared? Used to go and watch them regularly at the Bridgeway. Good old Gawler Blues 🙂
